Powdercoating over existing powdercoat finish

Hi All,

got my new rader wheels today with the standard silver powder coat finish. I'm looking to refinish them and was wondering if anyone has had any experience in powdercoating over and existing powdercoat finish.

The guys up here said it can be done but want to hear of any experiences if possible.

I understand, if in doubt, remove the original coating...which I understand can be quite hard, even via sand blasting....

You can powdercoat over powdercoating.
You can also remove powdercoating with chemicals.
There are companies that just do that.
I would not sand blast them.

Thanks....

Not sure that there are any chemical removal places up here to remove powdercoats...
I'd guess that the existing gloss finish would need to be removed though to re-powdercoat them though?

Who ever is going to powercoat your wheels will have the chemicals to remove the existing powdercoat 🙂

Cheers

Well....they powedercoated over the powdercoat and it stuffed up....having blistered like another finish was applied to them...
Will be picking them up in the morning and will post a pic on the weekend.

Ah well...back to square one and stripping them back.

The powdercoater suggested paint stripper is all they use to remove the powedercoat too...???

bummer... didn't see this before you got it done...
was told when i got my powdercoating done that once done it cant be powdercoated over again.... tho this may have been their preference.
they said it HAS to be a perfectly clean surface with all traces of paint etc removed preferably by sandblasting..
dont know what effect sandblasting would have on your wheels tho.. probably be too harsh.
good luck with it.

I would be removing the old stuff before you spend money better off having a good bond to the origional metal

I have had motorcycle stuff recoated over old. It was for the coating rather than cosmetic.

Try a different coater

otherwise 2pak paint will come up even better!

Strip the wheels first.. Nothing like advice after the event though.. If the process is electrostatic (which it probably will be) then absolutely vital to have a clean surface either stripped or media blasted..
