this should probably be in tech i know, but...
i have just bought a new dizzy rotor and cap for my car, for a bosch 003 dizzy, fitted the rotor up at the shop but couldnt fget the cap on. got it home and found on the inside near the clips there was a bit of plastic that needed shaving to match the old cap and clear some of the obstacles in the dizzy. shaved the plastic, got it fittign pretty snug, fired up the car, 1 kick then nothing. chucked the old cap back on, still nothing,
At this point i figured the points had siezed, so popped the old cap, flicked the points then put the old one back on again and she fired up fine, so i thought bingo, put the new cap on, got one kick then nothign again, so took it off, flicked the points, put it back on and it fired and ran a little off for about 10sec then died again.
does this mean theres somethign wrong with the new cap? if so, what?
thanks
Ryan

flicked the points??
If the cap is the same dimensions, and locatesthe same, should not be a cap problem.
To run for 10 sec then switch off is odd for ignition, usually spark or no spark!
Are you fitting nw points also? Are they gapped? Also did you clean the contacts before fitting? They have a protective coating on the contacts to pretect them in the box....

have you fitted and adjusted the points on the number one cam in the dissy should be 0.016 " gap
also have you fitted a new condensor as this causes the pionts to glue together

nope, left the old points in for now (look fine) by flicked, i mean i reached down and got a nail under the bit that is in contact with the shaft and pulled it back to see if it was stuck (i am new to points, is that where they 'glue' together?) I wondered whether there was something to do with the new cap - wrong gap between rotor and contacts? i slightly overshaved the bits of the cap that i had to shave, so there is about 2deg rotation in the cap before i apply the clips (no movement in any other direction) coudl this somehow be the cause?

moving the timing by two degrees will not cause it not to run.
Take the rotor out, and turn the ignition on, and turn the engine over by hand while looking in the dizzy... if you see spark between the points, then you have another problem, if you dont, you have found it.
If you have spark there, but not at a plug, maybe the problem is between the cap and rotor.
If you post a pic of the rotor and cap you are using, and maybe your dizzy it will help.
There should be a cap for your dizzy available, you shouldnt need to modify anything...

the cap is the one that the bosch books recommended for my car, the dizzy is 003 bosch, the cap is a 1235 522 056, the part number had changed over the years so i figured that the cap may have become more generic, as the dimensions of the cap appear identical, only the clearances internally at the clips and externally for 1 bolt were not properly allowed for in the new cap.

if you have to modify the cap to fit, surely its the wrong cap.

Are you getting a lot of flux or oxidised metal on the rotor and cap contacts? If the spark firing arc is too long, it may be quickly burning the contacts.
Maybe you accidentally damaged the low-tension circuit connector wire to the points, or have a bad contact at that point.
Agreed that you should never have to modify the cap, it's gotta be the wrong one. Take the old cap to the spares supplier and get them to check, the dissy on my EA81 turned out to be from an EA82.

mmm. will have to drop into a volvo specialist this time (the first place i went swore that the caps arent made anymore, the second checked up my car in an old book, then rang bosch and got a new code for the cap then pulled this one off the shelf.

dude just because the book says this or that for that model does not mean the the dizzy was left as origional try taking the whole dizzy in sounds like the wrong cap if you had to alter any bit of it its wrong one one of my caps goes on 180 degres looking at the large cutout on cap
baybuscamperkid ·
dizzy is original type, have confirmed that much based on the numbers on it.

call a VW place that knows their parts!! Or send em your old one.
Regular parts stores love telling you stuff is not made anymore.
I had a dude here in the US a while ago telling me bosch no longer make w8ac plugs (std type 1 engine)!!
