BUGBOY ·

I'd be interested in a bash plate if you can get them.
I was hoping to reproduce them as I need two bash plates anyway and they look straight forward to make.:thumb

I have sent you a U2U

VWCOOL ·

I'd like one too...

Craig Torrens ·

any more progress?

Nathan,
We call these "skid plates" or "case guards" over here in the US.
I often see them listed inThe Samba Thing parts classifieds, http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/cat.php?id=41
I currently see three listed there.
Occasionlly you will also see the front guard and rear engine guards listed. There is a rear guard listed now
You can do a search and also get email noitifications when a part you are looking for is posted.

Pretty handy.
Saves minutes, if not hours of searching.

I got a bash plate the other day.
I might look into making a few as I need to make a half for the incomplete one I have.
Is anyone interested in one?
If I get a few interested I'll knock up a few.

There isn't much to it. Give me the drawing or a sample and I'll make a few sets..
Today I've made engilne lid for CB...a bit tricky, but came good.

Newly listed bash plate on eBay.

Bugboy kindly provided the sample of the bash plate, the first copy is already made, but it needs some refinements
to make enough room for rear mounting bolt.

cb john ·

This is a prototype of bash plate.

1303Steve ·

Hi

I bought a VW book at Valla few years ago called difficult journeys I think. It has accurate plans for these units. I will scan it and post it if anyone is interested.

Steve

cb john ·

The plans would be certainly helpful, but after experience with the prototype I can tell, that welding will pull grid out of alignment and it won't fit as it should. Construction of welding jig is necessity.

1303Steve ·

Hi

Here are the plans. The book also has them for Type 4 motors as well. Maybe if your careful you could use an old crankcase as a jig?

Steve

BUGBOY ·

Thanks for that input Steve.
I have put this image in the CB tech info section also.

Nathan

cb john ·

Even though the drawing looks really professional, there are some important dimensions missing and my measurements of the sample and the case are slightly different.

There's another bash plate for sale on eBay Australia,
Item number: 290170684754
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Vw-Volkswagen-crankcase-protective-grille-country-buggy_W0QQitemZ290170684754QQihZ019QQcategoryZ72456QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It's currently at $76.00 AUS, or about $69.02 US.
That seems pretty salty to me because they are often listed on Samba in the $40 US range.
2 days and 1 hour to go in the auction.

John......what do do figure you have to have for one of your bash plates to make it worth your time fabbing one?
Just curious.

Regards,
Steve
