To minimise weight, BMW has employed magnesium for the first time in large-scale series production, achieving a substantial 30 percent weight saving compared with an all aluminium alloy engine.

Magnesium is used for the crankcase, the crankshaft bearings, and on the cylinder head cover.

I think Australia is one of the largest -if not the largest- producers of magnesium so that's a good move for us.

unfortunately, it will be the multinational mining giants that will make the money out of it. Still I spose it means jobs...if you like mining.

Ford were going to finance the refinery and part of the mine. There is a worldwide shortage and it would have given a few more jobs to Aussies,as it was to be built in Australia.Do you have a problem with sustainable, environmentally aware mining practises Pete??? Just curious...I wouldn't consider Ford to be a multinational mining giant馃檯
