vw54 ·

Gooday all i have nearly completed my induction manifold and throttle body set up

vw54 ·

more

vw54 ·

thanks to Brad at Westside for the welding

vw54 ·

thanks to Leigh for a few design discussions

vw54 ·

a bit of grinding involved

vw54 ·

The fuel should hit the back of the valve easy

vw54 ·

vw54 ·

Its a Nissian Pintara throttle body 50mm

vw54 ·

VL Commodore 3.3 liter injectors

vw54 ·

the intake manifold i purchased in the US in 1983 and was going to use a 42mm DCN Webber on the engine, times have changed

Top work!

Stanley ·

Very interesting and great work. I love modifications.
They seem like big injectors...what size engine will it be? and what ECU will you use?

Cheers

56astro ·

Nice work Dave.

Looks like it will be a very "stock-looking" set-up.

What size motor is it going onto?

vw54 ·

it will be 1916 69 x 94 counterweighted Demello crank

using Microtek MT8 putor

VWCOOL ·

Noice! That's how I wanna do my 'learner' camira EFI-based system

Craig Torrens ·

vw54 wrote:it will be 1916 69 x 94
Interesting combo....:kiss

vw54 ·

why is that Craigie

Takhoal ·

think Craig meant it is usually bore x stroke, gibbing u on having a 69mm bore pushing 94mm stroke.

Nice looking system there too!

[ Edited on 5-7-2007 by Takhoal ]

vw54 ·

well it could be 94 x 69 depends on how you want to say it

Craig have you got any Kadrons ??

pete wood ·

top work, whats the throttle body off?

vw54 ·

2 litre Nissian Pintara

Craig Torrens ·

vw54 wrote:well it could be 94 x 69 depends on how you want to say it

Craig have you got any Kadrons ??
Yes, are you after some?

pete wood ·

should go well. 👍

Craig Torrens ·

vw54 wrote:why is that Craigie
Just a joke really!........hadn't seen a 1916 combo before :P:P

vw54 ·

have u gota spare set of Kadrons ???

Boostn ·

nice work Dave

should drive very nicely !

I would run bigger injectors though.
you will max them easily.

type3lover ·

Love your idea!
I think VK was the first efi in a 3.3l (holden black motor) and then they used the nissan 3.0 motor in the VL.
Just wondering which injectors u used or were they the same? (bosch tan-tops?)
Cheers! Toby 👍

vw54 wrote:have u gota spare set of Kadrons ???
If you need to borrow a set just let me know :thumb

vw54 ·

I would run bigger injectors though.
Nick they work out at 550ccs per injector i thought it would be an over kill ??

Dasdubber ·

Looking good Dave - thanks for sharing the pics!

vw54 ·

I now have the fuel rails finished, thanks to Brad from Westside 9773-7244 for the welding, and thanks to Pirtek Mascot for the fittings

hopefully i will have the engine ready to fit in the next few weeks, then comes the fun part

vw54 ·

been doing a little each arvo

vw54 ·

low pressure fuel filter

vw54 ·

made up some nice fitting clamps and got some stud rubber mounts for the fuel pump

vw54 ·

fuel return into the filler neck of the tank

vw54 ·

the return line and flexiable line fit in neatly behind the spare wheel

Dasdubber ·

Hey Dave, that is a nice idea for the return line. What size (inside diameter) pipe and hose are you using for the fuel system?

Also sorry if you have covered it already but is there going to be a swirl pot/surge tank anywhere? Finally can you give some info re. what type of pump is that you are using (is it a low pressure pump for the return....or if it is a high pressure efi pump then why the low pressure filter?)

Sorry for all the questions!
Alan

vw54 ·

Alan

The feed line from tank to pump is 1/2 or 13mm the main feed and return lines to n from engine are rubber 5/16 or 8mm

No i am not using a surge tank a few people have done it this way and providing your not cornering at 100klms per hour or racing it should be good for street also must remember not to go below 1/4 tank

The pump is off a VL Commondore 3.0 Litre Fuel Injection so it will be able to feed a 2 Litre engine no probs its HP or the main or only fuel pump

The filter is there to remove any junk from the tank and is a heavy duty plastic type that will handle the suction from the pump

I have another HP filter on the feed line prior to the fuel rails, which will be located under the rear firewall and is of metal construction

no probs with the questions

vintage ·

Looking good

jenz58 ·

Dave howdo you find the time hehe...got a good job hey.....what ride is it in?:thumb

Euro_67 ·

Dave, top job and looks very factory. How do you think the accelerator pedal feel will be. Even with the factoy EFI plenumb setup I couldnt quite get the pedal feeling right, too much spring or not quite enough.

vw54 ·

Wayne

yeah dont know how it will feel the origional spring on the Throttle body looks pretty stiff so may have to cut it a bit

vw54 ·

Jen

yeah good job always allow a few hours in the day to do some small jobs for yourself LOL

I will be fitting to the Orange Smoothieeeee

http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=4762&page=1#pid248566

jenz58 ·

...had to do a double take there:P

Took 4 minutes lol

So is the Orange Smoothie off the road for a bit while tweak a few things?

vw54 ·

Yeah the smoothie is off the road i miss driving it got the other Orange car the 76

vw54 ·

Fitted the ECU up last night

[ Edited on 13-8-2007 by vw54 ]

vw54 ·

I have fitted it against the engine fire wall

vw54 ·

made some spacers to stand the unit of the wall to allow heat escape

vw54 ·

The nut inserts save heaps of time and allow easy instalation

vw54 ·

Finally got around to do some more work

vw54 ·

its cold in the garage

vw54 ·

made up the attach brackets

vw54 ·

should be installing the engine next week

vw54 ·

making sure the fuel hoses dont foul or get caught up

StenGuns ·

Looking forward to seeing this Dave

vw54 ·

Me too I will drop round n take u for a run

lulu94 ·

looks good, the 3 litre VL injectors should keep uip with a 1916 well enough, not turbo is it??
gives me ideas for Danielles beetle - only the inlet could have a bit of a plenum in the middle and four individual runners all the way, similar to the factory type.

hmmm I'm still logged on as Danielle.. oops.

vw54 ·

No its not Turbo although it might be one day

vw54 ·

Fitted the engine the other day and been doing all the other stuff

Have primed the oil system and have run the fuel pump is all looks good for a start next week

[ Edited on 11-9-2007 by vw54 ]

Bizarre ·

:bounce

vw54 ·

IT LIVES

56astro ·

Well done Dave.

Wish I was as quick as you getting it all together.

How does it run?

Is the tuning finished?

vw54 ·

its a tight fit with all the tubes n stuff

It fired up pretty easy

now the tuning process begins

vw54 ·

Wish I was as quick as you getting it all together.
I wouldnt say quick I started planning about 3 years ago and collecting all the bits n pieces making clamps and replacing the gearbox fitting the fuel lines etc etc

Ive had the car off the road for nearly 10 months Its the only way to do it

big thanks to Leigh sorting out the Microtech wiring and doing the initial start up and programing on the handset

vw54 ·

fuel flowing freely back to the tank

Bizarre ·

Can you get the plugs out past the rails??

vw54 ·

yeah i was surprised how easy it was

thought it may have been a pain in the bum but using a bit of rubber tube pushed on the end of the plug and screwed in by hand then tightened

StenGuns ·

Well done mate..

dangerous ·

Now all you need is some boost on that butterfly Dave.
How about a centrifugal blower?

vw54 ·

Well i wasnt going to but now that you mention it

yes i have set it so it woukld be an easy conversion to fit a small pair pump in behind the back seat and push through the firewall with a 2 inch tube

I have to re restore my 56 sunroof Oval next thats the next big project after this

opps forgot i have to fit the old school spped stuff to my 65 in between too many jobs

StenGuns ·

Dave.. Can you post a photo of the engine bay as it is now?.. Tks

vw54 ·

yeah no probs was going to do that a few weeks ago will do on Mundie when i have time at work LOL no time on the weekend at home

vw54 ·

Rob

heres some of the finished pics for you

vw54 ·

I am using a golf 1 Air filter

Westi made me a nice tube

vw54 ·

the throttle botle is from a 2 litre Nissan with and plenum adaptor made by Westi and myself

vw54 ·

the fuel rails sit well and its been running for about 6 weeks now had to check tighten a few bits

vw54 ·

the air filter / air box sits up against the firewall there about a 15 mm gap around to allow air to be sucked into the filter appears to work well

56astro ·

That looks like a sensational job Dave

👍

vw54 ·

yeah i am quite happy with it i will be upgrading to a new ECU in the new year

the engine is running quite good and happy wil no oil leaks, will be fitting an external cooler over xmas with a thermostat I already have the case drilled for full flow its currently running about 3 meters of hose under the pan of the car

Once again thanks to Boris, Leigh, Brad ( westie) Ian ( Pirtek ) and the many hours with the air grinder from Qantas

anyone interested in the components i used i have a spread sheet with cost and address etc etc

urban_myth ·

How quick is it and whats the economy like?

vw54 ·

Its a lot quicker than the origional 1500cc engine, and its getting around 26mpg around town

havent had time to run the 1/4 mile as yet but will be doing so in the new year

StenGuns ·

Interesting.. Thanks Dave

Craig Torrens ·

Dave, looks like you have the fuel rails set up in series.... is this better/worse/equal to having them in parallel ? I thought series would mean one side maybe running slightly lower pressure than the other ??

1303Steve ·

Hi

The pressure will be equal, it will attract some heat to the fuel once it gets to the other side, but for the cars intended use they work fine, EFI bays, Type 3s and T3s and even Subaru's use the same set-up.

Steve

vw54 ·

Craig

no problems with any sort of fuel starvation at all

i did make the rail 19mm ID so theres a bit of fuel reserve there i used the stainless flex tubing on the cross over line so theres some heat protection there and with the raiis and injectors up n away from the mainifolds theres no direct heat only the radiated heat from the engine

Ideally i suspose you should split the line to both sides of the engine and then return to the center and tank so as to make the fuel path all equal distances from the pump etc etc but the regulator maintains the system at approx 45lb and equals all that out it would be diferent in a bigger horse powered engine i would imigine

just did a fuel MPG the other week

its running on Unleaded no pinging and getting 25.7 Mpg or 9.1 liter / 100 not bad i think no surge tanks or other complicated multipal throttle bodies and the like

use the KISS method keep it simple stupid

Craig Torrens ·

Cheers..................I love simple, less to go wrong.

ElusiveStranger ·

A nice bit of work there Dave 👍

Keep it up 🙂

marty_08 ·

Looks great great Dave, the KISS method is usually the best mate!!!

Was wondering were you tapped ur head for the head temp sensor for the microtech ECU. I notice u've got the MT8.

I have a 10 - the one with the ignition control, and need to mount my bosch head temp sensor into a set of CB performance 044 heads. Just curious as to how you did it so i don't need to re-invent things!!! 🤓

Marty

vw54 ·

Marty

I tried taking a pic the other day of my sensor location but couldnt get it

its drill n tapped into the exhaust port area so it get hot pretty quick

Its a single wire type from VW from memory

hers a pic of the left hand side wiring it goes through the tin ware to the sensor

will try n get a pic tomorrow

marty_08 ·

Thanks Dave,

Is that on the drivers side of the engine?? Looks to be near cylinder #2???

Would love to see the other pic. 😵

vw54 ·

Yes on drivers side easier to get to the other side has air cleaner n junk

Bug_racer ·

Based on my experience with EFI this is what Id recommend

Injectors are way too big . I was running 580s in the S3 when it made 330whp and they were about 90% duty cylce . Your better off getting 280s off a golf gti if you plane on going turbo or even 200cc off a VR6 if your keeping it N/A . Also the newer injectors have a better spray pattern than the earlier ones .

I would also run heatshielding on the fuel rails . if your going turbo the rails will prob need to be replaced as will fuel pump .

What fuel pressure are you running ?
Is it wideband or narrowband ?
Is it running a MAP sensor or TPS only ?
Where abouts is the temperature sender ?

vw54 ·

the injectors are 260cc i had them flowed

fuel pressure is 45lbs

it runs TPS then flicks over to MAP

the temp sensor is in the head

riggsbie ·

Hi

I am new to this forum and searched and found your EFI project, fascinating !!

I want to do something similar but am struggling to find much information on it... Any tips ?

I was thinking along the lines of a Ford EDIS ignition system hooked upto a Megasquirt, not even thought about fuel rails and injectors.....

Any advice would be appreciate.

Thanks

Riggsy

REVBOB ·

Hi,
I just found this forum today and it sounds great. I have a '71 Ghia with my home built FI on a 2276cc NA engine. I used a 52mm TB from a '87 Dodge van 3L v6, CB FI end manifolds with my center section. CB fuel rails with 3/8" steel hard lines to the 20lb injectors. I run 40psi at the injectors. I installed two new 3/8" steel fuel lines through the tunnel with a pre pump filter up front and the HP filter up by the starter. I have EDIS ignition with Megasquirt MS2. I only have about 100 miles on the car so far but performance is unbelievable!! Now if I can figure out how to send some photos I will and also happy tp answer any questions. I know I had a lot of them.
Good to find you guys from down under 🙂
Bob

vw54 ·

REv Bob

yes please send us some pics its good to other ideas

I tried to make mine look like a stock system
