DYNOMANIA dyno guessing comp - Congratulations to dangerous (20.1hp!!)

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/63786/dynomania-dyno-guessing-comp-congratulations-to-dangerous-201hp

Dasdubber ·

Well, with the upcoming dyno day at Custom Exhaust Specialists in brisbane (see 2007 events section) on next Saturday (28 July).....

Throw in your guess for how much power the stonking 54 oval will make? With an alleged 36hp from new, do you think it will make more than 20hp at the rear wheels?? I reckon it may very well be the lowest hp vehicle on their dyno ever (to be confirmed)....

My guess is 27.05hp.

Prize is the custom made clock pictured below - will post no cost to winner. Throw in your guess - good luck!
Alan

Dasdubber ·

kroozzn63's guess is 26.53hp (from the 2007 events section thread).

Hertz ·

31.5 hp

Dasdubber ·

PS oval runs on optimax with stock everything else - I did clean the carb out the other day which I feel has added another 0.02hp - so take that into consideration. 😂

helbus ·

Was at a dyno day once where a Model T ran 7.4KW.

jo_tas ·

How fresh is the motor?

Without knowing.. i'm gonna guess 30hp :P

We have a dyno dynamics dyno at TAFE.. but they won't let me put my car on it.. something about leaking oil into it! 😂

[ Edited on 17-7-2007 by jo_tas ]

koolkarmakombi ·

30 evens on optimax.

So much depends on traction and jetting🤪

So today the dyno,

Tomorrow willowbank?

Dasdubber ·

No idea how fresh the motor is - I dare say not very fresh but it runs like a champ - I've done bugger all to it since selling the ragotp and getting this as part trade. It runs so I leave it well alone!

PS - the engine and gearbox will be up for sale not long after dyno day so this could be a rare objective, unbiased insight into what you could potentially be purchasing 😉

Today the dyno..... tomorrow the for sale section 👍

Can the prize be the motor and box👍

5PL1TDCS10N ·

Howdy...my guess is 35.75214hp!

phatratpat ·

22.3......why not...😀

I think I'll need every cent I can get judging by all the bills that are adding up just to get the oval ready for warwick!

But I think a reasonable reward will be a custom made vw-inspired wall mounted clock.....I'll post pics when finished, but here are a couple I've done earlier (not vw inspired though)

Need to be a little more specific than that mate :P

As long as crack double figures I'll be happy!

rose ·

how about 28hp

vsleepy ·

12rwhp

Notch Nut ·

23.5 hp at rear wheels.
Boost set to room air pressure.😉

derraux ·

i guess about 18 at the wheels exactly half what it came out with considering i would emagine it never made 36 at the wheels either way will be very intersesting.
Derek

derraux ·

oops some one has 18 ill have to go for 17.9

What brand is the dyno ??

dangerous ·

Wow those numbers are getting pretty small Alan!!?
Double figure would be nice though!

To give some food for thought,
my 40 horse(34din) with mods to intake and exhaust ran a 20.95 et at the track(62mph),
and that formula that I use calculated that to be 33.5 hp at the flywheel.(1800lbs weight)
A standard 40horse VW would be lucky to crack 25 sec,(27 was road test figures published I think).

And on most dynodynamics dynos(which THAT one IS NOT I believe),
I have seen 13% off engine power at the wheels, or add 15% to the wheel figure.

So based on that...

30 hp DIn = 26hp at the wheels.

So factoring in age, and errors for dynos, and weather conditions...I will stick with my 20 hp guess.

My last dyno trip had 188hp so I would like to be between that, and 200.

ian.mezz ·

8.9 hp @ 2500rpm:P

555bug ·

16.9 @ 3k

Flintstones ·

21hp for the little block 👍👍

pod ·

18.7 hp just wild guessing like the rest of us😉

fullnoise ·

24.3 HP allowing for drive-train loss and engine age. I just plucked those figures out of the air.

C'mon Craig. It's not that hard to guess a figure. Maybe you'll be able to come up with something third time lucky. Or are you just stalling so you can dyno test your own 36hp engine to get a better guess. We all know how competitive you are.

Nice post Alan. Hopefully we'll see the beast at Warwick. We can time the 1/8th with a sun dial.

Standed vw entrys are thin ! Would love to see a few more stock entrys and kombi's .
All in good fun ! Gas it up Allan ? 22hp on a cool , cold day

jo_tas ·

Ok i'll change my guess to 30.5 :P

And if i was there, i'd put my stock 1600 notch on there! :P:thumb

Thanks jo_tas - list is updated! I'll finish the clock this weekend and post pics 🙂

As Pete says, its all about having some fun and getting together and talking volkswagens......even if you don't own a high powered machine! You can't get much lower than my oval, so for anyone thinking the day is only for the "big boys" with hi-po volksies - think again!

Get your 1200, 1300, 1500, 1600 dubs on for some fun. It is kinda like drag racing, people can be worried about racing because they may be slow.....but its not all about the times (or in this case the hp), it is just getting out there and having some fun whilst having a good yarn to mates and new acquaintances in the vw scene! Eg. at warwick last year my best time was 10.5sec (in the 1/8th mile!) - one of the slowest cars there but I had an absolute ball and I am now hooked!

C'mon guys, lets support those willing to put on these events for us enthusiasts and enter your cars for DYNOMANIA! dak-a-tak or LIFE IN THE LOW LANE will be happy to help out.

Alan 😘

Alright - finished the "prize" tonight......if you win but think it is ugly, well I guess it could be a good garage clock - somewhere out of sight!

I reckon it's not too bad but I am a little biased - was going to paint the hands as the gold looks a bit iffy but I'll leave that up to the winner so they can do what they want! I'll post it at my cost (hopefully aus post won't think it is a bomb)

We'll use the old Price is Right rules - the person who comes the closest to the final dyno figure, but remains under the figure wins (eg. person A guesses 18.2, person B guesses 18.9........final dyno figure is 18.8 = person A wins).

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Well alan seeing as i have done a hell of a lot of runs on htis dyno and can vouch for it's accuracy when I back to back tested the ol' bosch dyno of CES' against a dyno dynamics and the difference was just under kw I say she is pretty damm on the money.

As for the lowest HP on this dyno I'm not 100% sure but thought i did get told somewhere around 16kw(21ish HP) so we'll have to see what happens.

my guess is 19.7hp(taking into account wear and tear, age and prolly the use of heavy oil to keep things quiet LOL)

pete wood ·

18hp flat. allowing for tranny, tyre and hair losses. 🙄

One week to go before the showing of some raw power - get your guesses in before its too late! :P

[ Edited on 27-7-2007 by Dasdubber ]

Last chance to guess today - no more guesses will be accepted after 7am tomorrow morning (Sat 28 July)....so if you keen to have a crack, get in before then.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

So who won Alan??? And what did you end up pushing cause I know I was very close but not as close as some......

11CAB ·

I was only 0.3Hp out......:P

Dasdubber ·

Congratulations to Dave "dangerous" Butler who guessed 20.0hp - the almighty oval made a whopping 20.1hp!!

I was worried it was going to jump off the rollers with all that power - it was all in good fun! Great day with great cars - more importantly just another excuse to talk vw's and catch up with mates. Next year it would be great to see some more stock cars and small capacity dubs - there were categories for all folks so make sure you come along next year!

Thanks all for participating in the guessing comp - I'll scan in the dyno printout to confirm the results tomorrow.
Alan

Congrats on the win mate.

Only .4hp out.....

I did hear Dangerous hard at it on the caculator working out his guess.....LOL

Dak-A-Tak ·

Thats a real cack !! Allan ,least post won't be to much ,just a drive away !
Your car's Hp figure should be alittle higher next year ,mate .
Thanks for coming up with this little comp ,we may have to do this agian next year after your car's up grade !

Dasdubber ·

That's right - I will be able to personally deliver Dave's prize!

I haven't had a chance to scan the dyno print out yet but will do so soon.
Alan

PS Hopefully next year I'll be able to make a few more hp if all goes to plan!

Dasdubber ·

Just to confirm the result. Scanner wasn't working so had to take a photo - Dave picked up his clock today.

Thanks everyone for having some fun with the guessing comp - will be interesting to see what the oval makes next year with the addition of an extra ~800cc plus a turbo, intercooler and EFI! Hopefully more than 20.1hp 😉

We need to get out more.... well done Al!!!...and Dave!

dangerous ·

Awesome and clean curve Alan.
Was that in third gear?
So around 60 to 80 km/h in third is max power.

Dasdubber ·

That's right Dave - in third gear. At least I know at what speed I should shift to 4th now! At least for the next few weeks before the engine comes out!
