So I am currently trying to remove all the tie rod ends from my beetle. they are being just a little more than stubborn to remove. Does anyone have any nifty tricks/tips hints?
Biggest problem is stopping the rod from spinning so I can get the ends off. I have it in the bench vice tightened up like you wouldn't believe yet cannot stop it from spinning.

Rost off, or WD40 etc to soak the threads will help

Are you trying to get the tie rod end out of the control arm the tapered pin section ??
you need to belt the control arm on the side so it shocks the tapper lock out of the socket

No trying to get the tie rod ends off the tie rod itself.

So you have them out of the car and on the bench
dont forget one is Left hand thread do tehy have the lock nut this has to be cracked before you can move the tie rod end its also on a taper

Yes,
make sure You have the clamps off...
spray with WD40 etc and let soak..
spray every few hours...
What you should have done is left the tie rod ends
on the car...
and unscrewed the centre tube section...
one end is RH thread and other end is LH thread...
yea left in the car and a pair of stilsons on the job makes easy work of it

If you find that WD40 etc. fails to loosen them, try eucalypt oil. It's the best penetrationg oil.

I have tried wd40, eucalyptus oil, oxy, and brute force with no luck. Being on the car would be harder than out of from what I can see.
I have the tie rods out of the longer tie rod that has the clamps to stop the tie rods loosening. I need to still get the tie rods out of the shorter tie rod that it does not appear to be adjustable. Have tie rod end is vice and vice grips on the tie rod itself. Nothing slips at all but sure as buggery isn't coming undone in a hurry.
Dunno what to do next really

my shorter tie rod looks like it was cast with the tie rods in it, so I know where you're coming from. I ended up buying a new tie rod and ends.......

Hmm well these don't look like there cast in there but the fact that they don't have locking clamps/nuts seems like they might be. Although the tie rod after cleaning it up abit has been crimped around where the tie rod end threaded section would be inside the tie rod.
Think i'll just get a new tie rod, can't cost too much surely?

Hi
Really early bugs had one fixed tierod, it looks like thats what you have. If the tierods are stuffed, buy a 2nd hand tierod and fit some new joints.

If its the original oval front end chances are your tie rods are the crimped type.
The short one will have a slight bend in it.
They don't come undone.
Get your self some 60's beetle ones to replace them.
The tie rod end will then have the kink and not the rod.

I replaced both outer tie rod ends on my '69 beetle. Bought them from repco $22 each and that was NZ$. I couldnt believe they had them on the shelf.
