i have a 61 bug that i have had a alternator conversion fitted my question is, how many wires should be coming from it? i seem to remember that when i had my 72 converted it just had three, this one has three on the main power out, a earth and a second earth to the body. its only putting out 12.30volts at tickover and only goes upto around 12.45 at higher revs. shouldnt it be around the 13.5 to 14 mark? I know the chances are that the wires colours have been changed but if anyone knows what colour wire should be where that would be a massive help to.

Please help as its taken me over 2 years to get this car finished and this is the only thing thats stoping me from driving it everyday, i want to play!!!!!!

Alternators can be internal or external regulated.

Internal has a single post on the top and external has a 3 wire plus + some other wires

What is it??... internal or external regulator

Whatever..... it should be putting out more volts than that.

An alternator should step up to 14V-ish at lower vevs than a genny

internal sorry forgot to mention that

Then there is a thich red/yellow wire and a thin black wire to the rear (back is back) post and a medium red wire to the spade connection in front

this one has three on the main power out
You have the earlier Alternator that requires a external regulator which has 3 pins marked the same as on the alternator you need to mount the reg on the firewall and make a short loom between the 2 units

You havea earth screw towards the back on the top and theres a 4 or 5 mm screw thats the main output to the side of the 3 terminal post outlet

ok all the wiring is as it should be but still low outputs and the feed to the red dash light has nothing. the wiring diagram i have says the dash light has to work or it will not charge. the wire to the dash light is fine i even ran a new one just to double check and the same but there is o.1 volts output from the alternator where it conects( behind the main d+ i think it was) anyone able to test theres and tell me what voltage it should put out as this is a brand new alternator and if its f**ked it can bloody go back!!... any help would be great...
