So I pulled the 36hp out of my beetle today as there is some oil leaking from somewhere. Whist degreasing I turned the motor over by hand and noticed that between the cylinder and head on one cylinder there was air escaping.
I have never opened one of these motors up before. But checked my book for dummies and noticed there is a sealing ring. I rang up to order some and was told that I don't need the,. Just remove the ring and bolt up the head and re torque it correctly and it will be fine. Does this sounds right that I can leave this copper(?) gasket out and just rebolt the head?
Also I took the cylinders off to check the bores and noticed that there is also no gasket between the cylinder and the block. But again in my book for dummies there is a gasket. Has this one just perished and should actually be replaced with something, or can this one also be bolted up with no gasket?
Also as I am taking the copper rings from one of the heads, should I be doing the other head also, even though it doesn't appear to be leaking. I don't want to rebuild the engine as I really don't have the money so for the time being this isn't going to be an option.
cheers
