As most of you would know i own a Meyers Towdster which is quite a rare car in Oz and mine is believed to be the only one curently registered in Oz also.
As most of you would also know i was supposed to of started on it a lot sooner than now but due to work commitments this has added a 2 year delay to the project but it is now well and truely on the go with the first thing being a new full roll cage which also ties into the front and rear suspensions.
Any way heres a few shots of the latest progress and i will hope fully record more of the build as we go and keep you all posted.
Andrew

The rear horn stays to stop them bending down under power , as there,ll be plenty of that now with the big 2387 and they will also eliminate the need for the engine cage to go all the way foward to the torsion tube.

Another rear cage shot
Sorry about the bad light but if you look hard you can see the tubes over my head from the twin centre hoops to the front hoop bad to be bent so as to be the right distance from my head to meet cams specs
OZ Towdster ·
A front on shot and to the shock of some people yes i have cut out the towd towing bar / steering column as I never used it anyway and it interfers with the pedal cluster
OZ Towdster ·
You can see clearer in this shot how the cage now ties in to the front beam and this will reduce the car from twisting when traversing big holes when offroad
OZ Towdster ·
Now to some this doesn't look much but was quite a headache to get right , as we have had to cut out the old front body support tube and replace it in pieces that tie in to the front end supports but still replace the body support at the same time.
At this time my bank account is also looking a little smaller as iv've sent a couple of dollars to Rod Penrose for the engine parts while he's in the US , just a mear $3500 at this stage.

So is it gunna get more wheel travel and a better driver once it is done ??
hehehe

Nice puddle of oil you have left there for the animals to die in too!👎 Top Driving!!!
OZ Towdster ·
I WILL HAVE YOU KNOW MY VW'S DONT LEAK OIL unlike yours and Bobs rides
MISS VDUB ·
🤪😂🤪
OZ Towdster ·
oh so you think i'mm crazy ,well stick your head under my old manx next you see it and as said you will not find a leak as leaks are only due to poor workmanship and ARE NOT a vw fault as thought by many and as it seams yourself included.

SO HOW DID IT GET THERE ?
A GUST OF WIND ?😏

Just so no more wanna be greenies get the wrong idea there is a very good reason those rocks are called coffee rocks ...... the colouring in the water is from Andrew spinning his tyres on the said coffee rocks.
To further prove my point if you look at the picture closely you will see the colour is in the sand and not in the water, oil floats and this stuff is not floating.

Just about to do a list and design work this morning for it to go to Dave at Custom Offroad Components to fab and fit all the suspension steering and front and rear barwork and a pedal box , then it'll be off to the fibreglassers to relocate the rear guards and fab new and front and rear guards from usig the old reworked guards as plugs for a mould

I hear you better get that work booked in quick, last time I looked his 2011 wa getting pretty full 😂
So many buggies such little time.....
OZ Towdster ·
Woh , had to do a good search to find this old thread , but like the bus i'mm also back into the Tow'dster build as well as i have a deadline now and am keen to achieve as 2014 is the 50 th anniversary of Meyer's Buggies .
Well i must be feeling sick or something lately as i'mm making progress on both my rides .
Have been on the Tow'd for the day today and have got the new rear end all bolted in for the first time mainly due to the fact that i need to get it rolling again to get it over to Paul at Steel Art to make a few components up that i can't make easily at home plus pipe fabrication and bending etc .
Anyway here's a couple of pics ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and it has to be asked , will my bum look big in this .
Have also fitted up one of the rear calipers this afternoon to make sure it clears the rims and all was good , and know all genuine Tow'd parts used of coarse
And a few weeks back , i also fitted up the 74 beetle steering column which Paul will hook to my Saco centre steer rack
OZ Towdster ·
Finally got the tyres and wheels together and fitted up to the car and it measures up to a whopping 1870mm OA width at the rear and 1840mm at the front , which with out much else fitted to the car makes it look like a praying mantus .
But i fitted up the old engine cage for a look last night and even just with that fitted it soon looked quite normal .

Looks great Andrew - love the new 'stance'!

Wow, did you have a change of job or something Andrew? You are progressing well on two projects at the same time, so you must be spending all your spare time on these beasts. Awesome. I'm a wee bit jealous 😁

Whats the difference between a Tow'd and a Tow'dster? A couple of mates have a few Tow'ds... cool little things
Mr Muppet ·
Impressive !! Looks the goods, especially for those mud holes 😁

Fantastic pic. Looking awesome Andrew

Nicol engineering wheels?
OZ Towdster ·
thatshimofficer , a Tow'd only has a bonnet and main body tub , and a tow'dster has the bonnet , tub , front and rear guards and a deck lid
nils , No they are Bruce Meyers signature rims

I see the signature now 😀

Well , i have been a bit slack lately on the posting of progress , but the good news is there has been plenty , although to some of you it may not look like much has been done at all .
To jump back a few weeks i have now moved the car over to Paul at Steelart Creations here in Brisbane and am very happy with the progress we have acheived in such a small time frame considering the steering column alone took a lot of head scratching for something that has ended up only 200mm long .
Ill let the pictures of the latest progress speak for it's self .
That oh so short steering column
The lower end of the steering shaft and pedal box
An overall side view of the steering , pedal box and front bar mounts
An overall top view of the steering shafts and pedal box etc
And the front bar
hellbugged ·
Awsome!
Luvin the new look
OZ Towdster ·
It's surprising how fast you can fabricate items when you have had nearly 10 years to think about the build and a good mate to push me a long , not to mention his input and great machining and fabrication skills
11CAB ·
Front bar looks good
bugboymatt ·
Excellent work guys.
josh702 ·
It's looking great Andrew can't wait to see this on the road, that's a great looking rack!
That's definitely on my shopping list
matberry ·
Great to see more progress guy's, nice work.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Who did the front beam? Or did you buy it?
OZ Towdster ·
Bought the beam in from the state's , which is a warrior beam
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
how much longer is the travel Andrew?
OZ Towdster ·
300mm travel at the wheel front and rear
OZ Towdster ·
MMMMMMMMMMMMMM Picked up some 45 DRLA Dellorto's for the 2387 , Thanks Dave
OZ Towdster ·
A bit more work of late with the rear engine cage starting to take shape , which is no mean feet when getting it around some big arse Dellorto's , keeping a decent departure angle , fllowing the lines and holding up a deck lid , and all looking good at the same time
LED tail light will be fitted in between the ends of the twin bars , and yes we have managed to fit a TRIMIL bobcat exhaust in there too
Have also ordered quite a bit of gear lately from the states which we will pick up while we're there in Oct , including a full set of Speedhut guages , a new deck lid , a jamar pro X shifter , a Berg GB454 carby linkage kit , a real bosch alternator , some nice german tinware plus plenty of other small goodies
baghall ·
Gonna be one a will need to follow. Looks good Andrew!

OZ Towdster ·
Well yesterday we all but finished up the front droop stops , and reduced the front top spring packs back to 3 full leafs only which at this stage feels like a nice spring combined with the 2 1/4 arms .
With that done and us needing to get the car rolling so we can move it around for an incomming container of gear from the USA we also refitted the left rear torsion bar and wheeled it outside for a look at the adjusted stance .
At ride height i should have around 430mm under the torsion housings with 100mm droop from there and 200mm up travel .
Yes the rear guards are going to need some work to centre them over the wheels but the arches also need to be moved out so no biggy to also move them back the required 40mm too
helbus ·
What a fantastic ride. You are doing great work.
OZ Towdster ·
Finally recieved our container from the states so Christmas has come early here
My HID headlight kit which will be fitted into a pair of genuine KC Stainless Steel Dayligters
Speed hut Gauges , including a combined Tacho / GPS Speedo , Oil pressure , Oil Temp , Cyl Head Temp , Volts , and Fuel , with all senders
A genuine Bosch Alternator and tig welded wide fan
A Jamar Pro X shifter with reverse lockout
Also unpictured at present is a set of Jamar hydralic fiddlers/ turning brakes , various size bump stops , some new cylinder tinware that i will insert the cylinder head vane out of a german set into , a 36 hp doghouse fan shroud and some LED tail lights
OZ Towdster ·
Bit more work , have set up the upper bump stops and limit straps in the rear
And cut out my centre consul to fit in the hydralic turning brakes , sorry forgot to take anyphoto's of the finished mounted item
h ·
great work Andrew!
the light at the end if the tunnel is getting brighter!
good stuff
OZ Towdster ·
Long time no posts , no excuses but i have been working on it !!!!!!!
Have cut and folded most of my new fuel tank out , which uses the triangular void that it fit's into better than the original round tank and the new tank should hold around 55 to 60 litres , sorry no photos' of this yet
Yesterday we also finally got stuck into the rear mudguards / fenders which we have moved out approx 50 mm and back 55 mm to cover my large rear stance .
The plan with the guards / fenders is to cut ,modify , and clean up the existing guards , use these as plugs for a mould ( the existing guards are in very poor shape have been modified a few times already and weigh way to much ) and produce a couple of sets , ie one set to go on the car and a spare set .
Any way here are a few pics of the progress so far
OZ Towdster ·
The front guards on my Towdster starting to take shape to cover the wider stance and longer up travel
roverv8bay ·
Good evening all. DAMN I'm jealous of this would love 1 but have to make do with the kombi. this will looks good with the guards finished what colour are you going to paint it. keep up the work. take care
ernie
OZ Towdster ·
Bit more done lately and some other stuff starting to get finished off .
The rear infill panel and modified Trimil Bobcat exhaust .
The front skid plate which will have a 250mm x 220mm hole cut into and ducted up to my engine oil cooler to give it good clean cool air
Not that you can see much of it but the alloy fuel tank in place
The modified Jamar brake and clutch pedals and Pauls custom made throttle pedal which will keep the floor clear
The centre consul with jamar X shifter
Andy ·
Nice read Andrew, great work.
Love the twin hand brake levers 🙂
OZ Towdster ·
Ok it's been a while again since the last post , but still moving forward , will let the pictures speak
Designed , cut , folded and fitted a dash panel
Mounted the oil cooler , it's a Towd , space is tight , and i didn't like the idea of the oil radiator drawing hot air off the top of the gearbox and or the hot from said radiator getting drawn into the cool air inlet on the fan shroud
Cut and folded up some headlight brackets
The alloy fuel tank in place , with the cut out area in the bottom to get around the hydralic lines of the fiddlers
MMMMMMMMMM Starting to get the final items welded out
OZ Towdster ·
Well have finally got the rear guards home and fitted to the car , i just have to make some tabs up today to hold the inside edges of the bottom of the arches to the chassis to stop them bouncing around
Now hopefully the front guards arent to far of being done also and i can finally break this baby down and send it out for paint and powdercoat etc
