36hp 12v conversion

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/64294/36hp-12v-conversion

lownslo ·

So is there any way to convert a 6v 36hp to 12v? Could a 6v generator be gutted and innards be replaced with that of a 12v.

cheers

Craig Torrens ·

you can buy a 12volt generator that is the same external size as a 6volt one............about $400.

matberry ·

Or get yours rewound by a local motor rewinder.
I believe either option is only just satisfactory due to the smaller diameter of the 6V.

I did see a early porsche generator on ebay recently which they said had the 6v diameter but was 12v and would fit the 36hp.
I have seen a 6v made to put out 12v, not sure if it was a modded 6v reg or a 12v reg. I don't have any details, it was quite a few years ago that I saw it. You could try machining the generator stand to suit the 12v diameter but I'm not sure if the is enough material to do it.

Alright cheers, I'll ring an auto elec joint come Monday.

I stumbled across this whilst surfing tonight. Its a 36hp motor but has a 12v generator. Anyone know what generator this is?

Hi

The silly people with the blue motor have fitted the generator 90 degrees out, the earth screw would be behind the carby.

Years ago I fitted a Holden alternator and bracket to the side of a gutted 6 volt generator, never got it running (saw the light and bought a super bug), but it can't see why it wouldn't have worked.

Steve its a Kombi Genny ( 38 amp fro memory )

Is there a better pic of that set up ???

So is the reason the 12v generator doesn't fit the 6v just due to a larger housing size? If so hugely different?

Joel ·

dave why cant u take the 4 fan bolts out and turn it 90 degrees clockwise like a 30amp jobbie?
apperntly the bearings can cook when there mounted like that one

theres a cooling duct on the back section of the tinware that allows cold air into the genny

BUGBOY ·

I have a one if your interested.

Have sent you a u2u

That 12v installation looks like the gen post may have been machined to suit the larger diameter of the 12v unit, or it is just sitting on top of the post and not located correctly, is the fan housing all the way home where it goes ino barrel cover tinware?

If you use any 12v gen, you definately will need to replace the regulator with a 12v.

thank you very much for your helpful input 🙅

Nevada51 ·

A Porsche 912 generator will fit the 36hp block

Ricks56 ·

I have a 36hp case that's had the generator stand machined for a 12v generator, if anyone's interested.
