A number of our families vehicles have noisy fanbelts - not the kind of noise that is made when they are loose (ie: a squeal), but more of a squeek.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what causes the belts to squeek and/or the best way to stop them from squeeking? My wifes car (a '93 Pulsar) is quite annoying and the noise is getting so loud that people turn and look at you when you drive past! :duh All the parts (belts/pulleys) appear to be in good condition and are correctly adjusted.
...and just so you know that this question is VW related, my brothers Type IV EFI Baja also suffers from the same problem... my brother blames the alloy pulley that he has fitted... but surely there must be a way to quieten it down?
Any suggestions?

The belt may have small cracks in the faces or
it may be out of alignment slightly or
the pullys may not be tight or
the belts may be too tight
I see you have checked all of the above
you can purchase a belt lubrication stick at most auto shops this is applied to the belt while its running WATCH YOUR FINGERS
you can also get away with some WD spray or even a cake of soap will do a similar job

yeah thats normal for this time of year
the old school mechanic over the road from mum and dad just sprays petrol on them and it works beleive it or not
ive used wd40 or something similar and it works fine
might have to do it once a week or so tho

maybe tighen it as it maybe loose..
or to be really dodgy if ya need to sell as an old 2nd hand car yard bloke once told me
'dribble a wee bit of johnsons baby oil on the belt/pulley as the mtr is goin and the squeek magically dissappear for a few days.. '
now how dodgy is that.. lol

Rub on some "Sunlight Soap"
(if your careful, you can do this while the engine is running.....with the usual disclaimers!!!!)
