Have just reinstalled my rebuilt 1600 twinport, ditched my twin carbs as they were more hassle than fun. I have put orig 34 pict carb back on which ran fine before installing twins a year or so back, but now I have 009 and just can't get it to idle, how much advance do i have to run? got it running good enough in the driveway, went for a drive up the street but it didn't like any load. Any tricks with the pict and 009 so i can get on with my life of owning a dub that goes?

I think it needs to be 30 degrees advance. Check out the vw-resource page, they got a guide for that combination of carb & dissy.

yeah about 30 deg max at 4000 rpm or something

the 34's and 009's dont like each other, but there is a trick with jetting and the riveting of a hole in the accelorator butterfly that can help, but ive lost the link.

I think you will find you have a carby problem...................probably due to sitting around for the last year or so.

Take a look here:

But firstly, nearly every time I've had a "no idle" sitn after a eng swap etc, it's been an induction leak.
Look carefully at manifold gaskets, rubber boots, make sure all the take-offs from the manifold are plugged etc.
I even had an old 36hp that wouldn't idle that had rusted in the intake manifold thru to the heat riser tube. That took some finding!!

Cheers guys, ya, I've checked everything, new gaskets everywhere, all tight and tidy, put orig vac dizzy back on with the new points, rotor, cap and condenser off the 009 in it and it fired up first start and ran! couldn't get a happy medium between an idle and driving good under load so its booked in for a tune in the morn, has taken me a month to rebuild the eng and get it looking purdy, don't mind paying someone for the tune at all, having it running smooth and reliable for daily driving will be my reward for all the hard work! it runs ok, but i dont want to run it too rich or bad timing while running it in as i want it to last this time! the workshops less than a km from my place so i'll just cruise it up and let them do their thing, can't wait, have missed driving the oval so bad!
