exhaust, misfiring....something ! :(

just left my mates place after watching a bit of nascar, and all of a sudden my beetle has a different exhaust note :o

the exhaust being rather low, and me taking an awkward angle out of the driveway in order to clear the gate, i did bang the exhaust on the gutter.

once throaty and mean, it now pops and splutters 馃槧

driving along with the missus holding the steering wheel and my head out the window, it sounds like every couple of piston cycles (i.e every 3 or 4 explosions), its misfiring or something.

what could this possibly be ?

help 馃ゲ馃槉

your pipes or the connection has become holy...holey
oops, it sound drawing air in inreasing oxygen in the muffler causing gases to explose more readily try

let the car cool dwn and then idle engine closing bth COOL pipes to block in air...if it escapes at a crack or leak
repair it. If none escapes its somethin else

what exactly do you mean by the cool pipes ?

Bizarre 路

he means dont burn your hands when ypou block it off

My guess is you have cracked/broken the seal where the heater boxes join

You may be lucky and just have to unbolt the clamp, twist the seal and do back up again.

I find it best to take the gennerator belt off.
This allows when you put your hand on the joint you arent mistaking air flow from the fan with leaking exhaust.
Just run it for a minute - just long enough to check for leaks

i dont have heater boxes, its all been taken out and sealed off. and its not a stock exhaust. extractors, 4-into-1 that comes out the side near the right rear wheel

You wont have heater boxes but you will have a j pipe.

The joint where the J pipe joins the header is where i would be checking

ok thanks, if i do find a leak there. whats the best route of sealing it ?

i dont care if it looks bad or not, this is a really ugly exhaust ill be replacing in a few months, but i cannot stand the sound of my car atm 馃槧

I am guessing it is "just" a clamp kit

You may just need to re-seal it - as in unbolt it and push the gasket/seal back in and bolt it up again

Worst case is a new clamp kit
No big deal.

Getting it to seal properly, so as to run heater boxes can suck - but no drama getting it seal to stop backfiring

Stick your head under tomorrow and tell how it is joined

guessing it looks like this

Use woven metal seals - not fibre

I also replace the pathetic bolts with hi tensile ones
