Have recently had fuel lines replaced any suggestions as to what could be causing it?

Mine had the same problem when I bought it. I replaced the fuel cap and changed the breather line to make sure it was going outside of the car and that solved it.

could be leaking hose under the tank. if you use fuel line which is a bit big in inner-diameter it doesn't seal very well

Nah not from under tank just replaced those ones.
Bizarre ·
But you 100% sure you did the hose clamps up tight.
Had times where the clamp on the big rubber connector hose wasnt doent up tight enough and would weep when full.
Would stink the cabin out from such a small weep.
One more turn did it. Just needed the "one more" though

Hiya kom,
A very likely source for strong gas fumes in the passenger cabin is the seal around the gas tank sending unit. These seals are often neglected and they do deteriorate from the inside out, so while they may look OK, that are actually bad. Check it out.
And one other question............. what year is your Bug?

Had the same problem was caused by fuel cap leaking fumes. Also as mentioned above if you have an earlier model beetle get a longer piece of hose and run the breather outside of the car. Makes a huge difference!

just to add my 20 cents worth we had a beetle with fumes turned out to be the fuel line running inside the handbreak channel was leaking remody run a fuel hose outside of tunnel sorry but it happens drove my friend crazy finding it

i have a 70 bug, had alot of problems with fumes, one time my over flow pipe came off and spilled fuel all down the side into my heater channel. also had a problem with spilling out the filler down the side of the car.. bought an older style tank with an internal filler now its sweet as. plus no more filler cover as i had it smoothed over, very sexy :P

my 54 had dreadful fumes when I got it, & no evidence of fuel anywhere, the breather is actualy in the cap, & that is where the smell seemed to be coming from, in desperation I made a nice new cap seal out of cork & the fumes instantly disappeared even though the tank breathes into the boot

Registered as a 66 but my mechanic has just told me it is more likely a 63 - not real sure but I'm told you find the defining numbers under the rear seat so I'm gonna have a look.

Hiya Kom,
Here in the States VW started installing the M-26 emissions system on all their vehicles in 1970. The reason I bring that up is that the M-26 system went about actively scavenging loose hydrocarbons (which give that raw gas smell). Almost all US cars I have seen with a "smell problem" have had that emissions system compromised in some way.
Not that this would even apply to you with a 66 (or 63) but it prompts me to ask..........did Australia ever get charcoal canister M-26 emissions system?
