Charging problems

i posted a little while back on how my brand hew alternator conversion wasnt workign right, it was only trikle chargeing at around 12.30 volts. well turns out the problem was the exciter light wasnt working, right so we instaled a new one and wooohooooooo 14.4 at tick over but here lies my next problem, as soon as i give it any sort of revs it shots up to around 18volts!!! the alternator i got was one from classic in sydney and i was pretty sure he said it doesnt need an external regulator when i bought it.

any ideas? if i need a regulator where would i install it? i dont want to drive the car incase i set fire to the wires so any help or pointers would be a great help right now

Dont drive with 18v, it will fry the battery, and who knows how many bulbs etc..
If there are only two electrical terminals, one an m5 stud and one a male spade, it definately has an internal reg., if so it is not regulating!

If it has an m5 and 3 male spades grouped together, it has no internal reg., and you need one!

crap!!!! it has the m5 stud and one spade conection... grrr!!!!!! so send it back as its only 8 weeks old? or can i get a new reg instaled? as i got it from sydney and i am c-qld so returnign its a bloody pain..

Local repair could be more hassell, but a lot of places wont warranty electrical!!!! @#$!!!
