ok had no dramas with my swingaxle at all, pulled up at shops and shut car down. I returned and started the car, when i went to pull away a loud bang came from the left rear and i lost drive. it sounds like the shaft has snaped and its spinnign freely . when a mate turned up i showed him and he says the left rear wheel is moving forward everytime it clanks. ideas? and if its the shaft snaped or broekn how ever can i replace just that one side? i am planign a irs conversion but not just yet and its my daily driver now as i sold my other car... any pointers would eb great as i need to get this sorted asap..
cheers

check your brake drums, are the splines still there? if not, there's your problem. it happens

ok started to pull it down and it appears to have broken the axle at the gearbox end. Now from memory on a swing axle they have a flat section at the end that slides inbetween two half cirlce rods and that where it does from a flat paddle section to the tube is the weakest point and is prone to breaking. so fingers crossed when pull the rest down this is the problem ...

wow thats pretty crazy to break an axle
yeah you have a spade end that sits in between two fulcrum plates in the side of the diff.
if it is the axle that is broken u can undo the circlip and take out the thrust washing and then the axle will slide out, there should be a colour painted on your axle, i beleive u need to get an axle with the same colour mark to match your fulcrum plates, then (being very careful with the fulcrum plates untill u have the circlip in as they tend to slide around to the back of the axle spade end) do the oppisite and re assemble.

but having said that, what makes u think its the axle, did you inspect the brake drum fully? as if they strip it will send all drive to that wheel and u will have no motion.

should be a number stamped on the axle. you need to match this number with its replacement. mine had a 12 on it (long axle post '68) mine had the threads stripped.
