Wiring in an ammeter

The SR is going to have the traditional six instruments, one of which will be an ammeter. The gauges are VDOs made by Siemens.

The terminals on the ammeter are quite large and the instructions are in very strange English with a difficult to understand wiring diagram.

Do I wire the whole battery charging current through the ammeter or do I shunt it so that it reads the current, but doesn't carry it all?

the ammeter needs to be wired in series, so the current travels through the guage. hence u can then see how many amps are travelling along that line.
