This car started life in the late 80's in Victoria.
Tony went from shop to shop trying to find someone to help him in his quest for speed. Back then none of the shops knew how to go fast in Victoria but what they did know was the value of the good engine parts they stole from him. He then went for a rotary 12a. Never really happy and after breaking numerous transmissions he gave up and the car sat for about ten years.
It now resides in a long time good friend of mine, Mark's garage. I first met Mark in 1990 when he was racing his Blue and pink 13 second 1835 bug. He has been rebuilding that same bug for the last 15 years and although it will be VERY tough, he wanted a little something to get back behind the wheel of a VW at the drag strip. But because I am involved temporary bug will turbo EFI. Fun!!!

I think I met Tony many years ago(before rotary...exit mould👍)
when he went to Sydney for a visit for the VW Nationals.
It was a damn shame that the VW businesses that he delt with back then STOLE his parts and that drove him away from the scene.
From memory one of the stories was when the next engine had even LESS performance was stripped down,
his good chromoly crank was not even there, (!)
and a non counterweighed holden journal crank was what was left.
At least now, things have changed with regards to finding a good performace shop, and perhaps he will come back.

Exit Mould ???
I haven't seen Tony in over ten years, but I still remember when he was first building this car and all the hassles he was having with different vw shops around Melb. He is a top bloke and didn't deserve that.
But he still persisted in trying to have fast vw powered bug, but eventually gave up and went for a rotary....If only he had known about Vollkommen Art back then, I'm sure things would have been much different.....
Anyway this car now belongs to me. It is just going to be something to play around with at the drags untill the huxtable is eventually finished. But with the help of Nick and one of his intercooled EFI turbo motors I'll probably never want to stop driving it :-)
Boostn ·
Yep that the one Dave.
I picked the car up off Tony and he told me all the stories so it's all true.......unfortunately.....
and many more....
Euro_67 ·
Disgusting what some worksops will do. I say shame them if they are still trading !
Boostn ·
Bad hey, and Tony is the nicest guy in the world that would never try to roll anyone.
He had the money and spent it.
one of these shops is still going but the others have closed.
it is not my place to shame but I do believe in karma, the other shops have closed.

Still not welded but taking shape

looks like the opening at the top will be able to take vast amounts of dry ice👍👍👍:bounce

Love it!! Very nice indeed.

I like the dry ice idea. Maybe cheaper than nitrogen.

Thanks for putting up the pics Nick.
It should be finished and mounted in the car by the end of this week end.
And yes, the dry ice will go through the opening at the top very easily! ( This is a fully sealed and vented tank by the way)

I bet he's more than happy with the service he's getting now.

I just got back from the dyno.
164 kw @ the wheels with a 1994cc
It is spot on what we wanted out of this package and I am very happy. Should be good to go 110 mph over the 1/4.
more later off to Portland now.
Dasdubber ·
Well done Nick - after Portland make sure you update some pics and some specs if you are able to share them. It's always nice to know what combos are producing what sort of numbers.
Just had news that the barometric compensation on the dyno is not working properly.
This would explain why the car was so fast over the 1/8th. We were out by about 60 kw.
This all ads up to about 220 kw at the wheels out of a 1994cc engine.
This little engine first surprised me when we ran out of injector ending our dyno session early and limiting the power output.
Then blew me away at Portland when it went 100 mph in the 1/8th.
We have a lot of work to do on the rear end still so there will be an improvement!
BUT I am very embarrassed seeing as the junka has only gone 104mph half track and is a 2233cc.
Wayne P has gone 106mph in his 2800cc.
Not bad for Mark just getting back into things, he drove exceptionally well and did me proud.
More drivers wanted!!
JVLRacing ·
I only can say this turned out to be a very good ending😎Some homework has deffently gone into this motor to produce those results.....topstuff.
mactaylor ·
very nice nick! but the last line should read more pilots needed!
A 1200 is slow ·
By the way it went it felt like it was making more than 164kw that's for sure!!
I can't wait to take down the 1/4 now.
type3vw ·
when will you guys be running it on the quarter?????
Boostn ·
Finally had some time to put a small video together of Mark driving well at Portland 2008.
Once again a big CONGRATULATIONS to Mark, not having driven the car before Saturday at Portland.
It was also his first time back into the seat at the drags for nearly 15 years!
Dasdubber ·
Cool, nice video Nick - can't wait to see what it will do over full distance!
I'm not sure if it is has been discussed before, but can you shed any light on trans ratios?
Also one other question - hoping not to side track....I am thinking of a 2332 turbo/efi engine as you know but to date only planned one throttle body with plenums design to be researched before committing....seeing this 1994 engine runs the duals, what are your thoughts re. pros/cons of single vs dual TBs?
Cheers
Al
Boostn ·
1st 3.40
2nd 2.20
3rd 1.56
4th 1.12
FD 4.12
The only reason we ran the 40 TB's is because I had them lying around with manifolds.
A single Tb will work just fine, remembering that's only a air control. The thing to remember is if the Tb gets too far away the throttle response will suffer.
When it's on boost it's all about injector position.
Also the thing with the VW is the limited space and sometimes there will have to be a compromise.
Dasdubber ·
Thanks for the info Nick. I'm sure I'll be asking a lot of questions to a lot of the guys around here before making any purchases! The knowledge and experience base is easy to take forgranted sometimes 🙂

Cool Vid! Thanks Nick!!

Al Troy's car should be on the dyno inside the next month so you are most welcome to have a good pep around the engine bay of it for some ideas being it something similiar to what you are going to build.
Dasdubber ·
Cheers Brenndan - I forgot about Troy's type III....will have a lot of similar parts I would imagine.
Boostn ·
Mark went racing a few weeks ago.
First pass was a warm up pass and Mark 60ft'd 1.6 / 98 mph to half track then got off it in 4th because it started moving in the top end and rolled through for an 11.8 @ 95 mph.
Second pass Mark did a good burnout and a wheelie out of the hole but when he pulled 3rd gear it cleaned all the teeth off it.
3rd is the only gear used from Mark's box from 15 years ago and we think is a Bugpack gear?
The car is now getting prepped for Portland.
dangerous ·
Bummer guys.
32/21 gear set?
I have seen a few of them broken...even on NA engines.
It is a good ratio, so I recently asked ERCO if anyone made THAT ratio still.
He said they had not been made for 15 years and were from Johnny's Speed and Chrome.
1.50 and 1.556 are available from most manufacturers with chunky teeth.(1.556 would be my choice with the 2.20 seond).
It seems common for blow through cars to break 2nd and 3rd gears.
Something to do with the blow-off valve not working fast enough I reckon.
Hope things have been well Nick.
Turbo54 ·
Nick, this seems like a really good combo.
Can you tell me what computer you are running and how much the car weight is?
It is a similar setup to what I am doing and a similar power figure that I am looking for.

popcorn was great eating😎nice m8

Thanks Nick.
Yeah I got that gear from BugPack in 1990...It served me well I think!
Hopefully next time out I will be able to make a full powered pass down the 1/4...I'm dieing to see how fast this car will go...It certainly has some potential!
The computer is a Microtech MT-4. I don't know what the car weighs but it is not light. I could probably take 60 to 80 kg out of it with not too much trouble.
Mark
Boostn ·
Finally Mark got a full pass over the quarter and it went 10.95 @ 127mph with a pedal or two in third gear.
Congrats Mark on the good driving first pass off the trailer, and being the third streeter into the 10's in Aus.
dangerous ·
That is awesome dude!
What were the increments?
What axles was Mark able to get?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Nice one boys great time indeed❗

Awesome work guys...congrats
Mark, what happened with your blue 63?

I see in the nice wheel stand pic you have a brace under the engine which looks just like 1 i have in a box i bought......heres the stupid question......where do you fit it to, im guessing bar brackets on the body but how does it mount to the engine?
A 1200 is slow ·
Thanks guys.
Dave, the axles are just another set of SAW's, the same type as I had before.
60ft- 1.58
660ft- 7.05 @97.66mph ( I have run 100mph)
1/4- 10.95 @ 127.05mph
Reub, The huxtable (blue 63) is still in the pipeline, I just havent done any work on it for a while because I have been a bit sidetracked with this green thing.
Rexy, If you are talking about that black bar thing going from one side to the other, I have it mounted to the case just below the oil pump and I made some brackets that bolt to the body, and use 10mm allthread as "hangers"

great times, congrats, digging the look and pace of this car !!!
.....soooo makes me want to go turbo

Congratulations! Must be very satisfying to run those numbers after persevering through the hiccups.
Well done
Al
A 1200 is slow ·
Yes, it is very satisfying running some decent numbers.
As for hiccups, they have been limited to gearbox and axle breakages, and have been very minimal considering the punishment I am giving them.
The most annoying thing about breaking things has been the long wait to get replacement parts from the U.S. suppliers who allways seem to be out of stock of the part that I need......

Great result Mark
good to see you back on the track, I'm spewing I couldn't make it yeasterday. What were you running against on that pass? I heard the commodores were back at Heathcote.

Unreal, exactly what i needed to know, there is nothing in the middle of mine either so i will do the same then, or maybe make bolt on brackets to an ex kombi mount oil pump cover, thanks for the info👍

how busy do the test and tunes get at heathcote im thinking about coming over some time soon- the car is sitting ready to run but we dont have a track
thanks adam deb

Adam, Heathcote has be packed for the last couple of months. Now that Calder has stopped holding their street meetings everyone is going to Heathcote. There was probably about 200 cars there last week.....Very crowded in the pits.
It would be good to see your car there!
