My 1962 Beetle Updated Pics

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/64996/my-1962-beetle-updated-pics

LukeV85 ·

Hey guys,

Just thought I would share some pics of my 1962 Beetle.

Shes my pride and joy. Totally original, immaculate and rust free. A rare car itself its classified as a 1962 and 1/2, the only fully Australian built Beetle aka the catch up beetle. Wolfsburg used to send knock down kits from Germany to Australia and put them together at Clayton.

There are some minor minor probs ie some dents tired front seats. So far ive completely cleaned up the engine (original) and had it fully serviced. It ran perfectly when I bought it, but im fussy with my cars. New fuel lines, new indicator switch and ivory steering wheel.

There is not much work needed, but im slowly getting her perfect. I drive it regularly and shes never let me down. As mentioned ill never sell her. She will be a member of my family for a long time to come

Ill post some more up to date pics over the weekend.

As im refering from a book "Volkswagen In Australia" The 1962 & 1/2 Beetle is refered to as "The Australianised Beetle" VWA even put a made in Australia sticker on it. (as mine beetle has this sticker though it is showing 45 yrs of age)

The book refered the CKD's were replaced in 1963 and continued till the 1974 Superbug model.

Im getting the info from there

Hi Luke,

Like your ride, but I am a bit bias. I am doing a ground up rebuild of a Turquoise 61 beetle (wont be stock). Also I am only in Casula, so not far away either.

Will try to post some pics of my rebuild over the week-end. Down to a bare floor pan and a completely striped shell awaitng sand blasting.

pod ·

turquoise is my favourite colour as well ,mines a 61🙂

thanks guys.

After some time being off the rd due to a fuel leak, the bug is back on the streets, running better then ever!

Since my last posts on the car, i have sourced a original 6 volt awa radio and had that installed plus some other bits and peices.

As of next month the car will be back to recieving monthly add ons and upgrades. Ideally im looking for a rat style roof rack plus thinking bout adjustable front beam plus some new axel boots.

Will keep updated on progress.

hewey ·

A neat looking car in the flesh too 😏 How about some pics with the new rack and some stuff on it? It looked really cool 😉

thugbug ·

Hey Camo. You and i must nearly be neighbours. I`m a hop, skip and bump at Lurnea. Near the shops. cheers

Camo ·

Hi thugbug. Yeah not far away at all. Is that your car in your avatar, looks neet.

Kevin

LukeV85 ·

Just an update and to the progress of my 62 bug.

Ive had the 6 volt radio installed and it works great. Also I picked up an awsome retro roof rack, thanks heaps hewy.

Also ive searched ebay and purchased some great 60's era accessories, 2 malleys eskies and a old skool suitcase.

Next on the list is the door window rubbers which need to be replaced as they are badly cracked.

In addition the axel boot have been replaced, they looked ancient
Anyways...enjoy

You realise I have an esky that would perfect for you beetle...even the right colour 😎

LukeV85 ·

been a while, but due to other commitments i havent had a chance to do anything to the bug.

Ive had the eyelids removed as i felt they looked a little comical, i reckon car looks better without them.

The front quater window seals have been replaced. The old ones had completely rotted due to 4 decades for heat. Replaced with West Coast Metric rubbers.

Minor paint touch ups, hans klacck was able to match to colour as close as he could.

My little addition is the "D" sign. They are usually displayed at the rear of the car, but due to the big rear bumper over rider, i have put it a the front of the car. I personally think it looks better there.

Ill Put some pics up tonight

greasykitchen ·

Sweet. I love it! probably my favourite style and era of Beetle 👍

Wannavee ·

Hey Luke.Nice car man.
Mines a recent purchase (and first vw) in same colour.
Check it out in General chit chat under 'good day' as i dunno how to post the pics
Cheers,Lee

Had those crappy brazillian headlight eyelids removed. I reckon car looks better without them

LukeV85 ·

"D" sign, usually they are placed on the rear of the car, but due to the big ass over riders had to move it to the front

LukeV85 ·

got this neat item from forum member bizarre, thanks again mate, was lookin for one of these for ages

LukeV85 ·

LukeV85 ·

Overall, coming along slowly but nicely

Rural Baja ·

All you need now mate is a set of period NSW plates to complete the package 👍

Man i love beetles 😊

Canni. ·

Nice job 🙂 I like the 'D' on the front too!

NullaDub ·

Hey looks real nice. I would love to see a couple of shots of the interior as I have a very very much beaten up and modified 62 beetle. Yours is a bit of a blueprint 😵‍💫

no worries ill post some up tonight, the interior is original, the back seat is in good condition , the front seats have wear and tear at the moment they are covered with oldie retro seat covers. Door cards along with the headlining are great for 46 years of age. Ive ripped up all the rubber from the floor and completely rust proofed it all. I have placed some cut to size carpets over the floor to keep it all neat. Sometime next year ill tackle the interior will new everything.

LukeV85 ·

Its been a long time, a very long time, and due to financial difficulties and a major car accident the Beetle project had taken a spot on the back burner.

But now after overcomming both this issues i have decided to continue the project.

Since my last update i have only done minor stuff, including new tyres and VW mudflaps.

LukeV85 ·

Most tyre retailers dont seem to stock this size of tyre anymore, prob due to the fact the they have been phased out

LukeV85 ·

Picked these up from Georges, a cool accessory, got my dad a white set for this superbug. They were crazy difficult to get the right had side flap put on as the bolts were sooo old and threaded. Ended up drilling through the holes and distorying the threads so I could get a long bolt and nut setup through.

LukeV85 ·

Hans was able to paint and detail the engine bay, small but made a big difference

New Fuel Pump Comming Up

That is beautiful!!!! You should be very proud. I would love to have that in my garage😁

Thanks mate, still wayyy more to go

LukeV85 ·

Took the car to Hans to have a new fuel pump put in. Unfortunatly from what hans tells me is thats its quite hard to find an early fuel pump.

When the pump was removed and inspected there was about 7 gaskets under the pump????

Anyway the pump was cleaned and put back on. Also hans removed the handbreak and gear stick gave it a clean and put on a fresh coat of white/ivory paint.

LukeV85 ·

handbreak

Joel ·

the extra gaskets are to control the fuel pump pressure
the more gaskets stacked under it the more the pressure drops

the fuel pumps are the same on all 40hp onwards motors its just a case of getting one to suit the long pushrod and not a short one
