headlight glass interchangebility

kombikim ·

there are of course a number of different Bosch & hella headlight designs pre 1968 but is the glass interchangable between all of them ? it looks the same size but.........
specifically I am looking at putting oval glass in mid sixties lights

thanks

yeah all good, easy to play swapsies but there are some differences that you may need to consider, such as some internal 'buckets' are plastic rather than steel; some adjusting screws have (+) heads rather than (-) etc

kombikim ·

that should be OK, I just want to swap the actual glass

thanks

yeah there all the same

Fit a new rubber seal to the glass to stop them rattleing around and use some safety glasses when removing and replacing the spring clips that hold the glass into the rim

The clips are prone to flying and going through someones eye

kombikim ·

yeah, the clips are fun, luckily I have a few spares, after a nasty coupla hours the first time searching for them in grass with a magnet I ended up tieing a length of cotton to them

Yeah good info about the rubber seal; people usually donlt know they even exist! I've used electric tape around the edge of the glass (three or four laps of the glass) which although not as good as the proper rubber seal is better than nothing

the Main difference between the lenses is the flutes
in the glass...

Beetle lenses throw the light to the left on Low beam

Kombi lenses do the same...
but naturally differently...

tape around the lenses is a good idea...

so long as the headlamp lenses are the same....

nothing worse than using old & late model lenses
or a Kombi and beetle lense on the one vehicle...
Yikes

cheers

no, glass in oval beetles does not throw beam to left, the asymmetrical lenses did not come out until about 1960 or so (I havent got time to search exact date) all I am doing is putting my symmetrical lenses in a pair of mid sixties lights I picked up that have perfect reflectors

Rota_Motor ·

can I ask a real silly question, its still headlight related.

are all the type 1, 2 and 3 headlights the same for the same year, or close enough for a swap over??

reason being, I saw some H4 lights on Ebay, said they were for beetle or kombi but there are two type 3s here now, and also we have a bunch of good beetle lights spare.. and a couple of average looking type 3 lights lol.

Kim, why dont you get the reflectors re-silvered to keep the original look for the oval.

kombikim ·

yes, well there is a place of Epping Road at lane cove that does them at a good price but my car does not go off the road for more than a day & i get withdrawal symptoms, done 260km in it today.... & they are only open weekdays so I cant get there, a really good mid 60's set came up at a good price, so I will swap the glass, then only experts will pick it, & I dont care about that & I will get the originals resilvered when I get holidays

Thats the same place i have had mine done $ 60 pr.
