Warwick 2007

BeetleJuice ·

It was really great to see some VW racing again! It was even better to catch up with some old friends from a decade ago....Dave Butler,Craig Brown,Peter Page, Rod Richardson,Matt Berry,Lex Cowley,Paul Spinsay etc.

Was some really good looking cars and some were bloody quick!

For me there was a few that really stood out ..Dave Butler ran like a pro and we liked the burnouts Dave!
Penrose boys put on a good show, that Rotary powered Bus sh**! Debasi 's Turbo Beetle impressive,Morgan's sweet Brown beetle. Wally ran quick and consistant...don't think I've ever seen Wally run anything but! Saw Andrew's lil homemade Turbo cool!

Too many to mention!

I have taken around 100 odd photo's and a number of short video's that I'd be more than happy to email to anybody! Some are good but there is a few shocker's and I'm not really a techy, so whoever wants them feel free to post wherever.

BeetleJuice

PS This inspired me to dust off my car:duh

Sounds great!

I'm up for some pics and vids... My email is reub@vwrx.net

Thanks dude :thumb

BeetleJuice ·

Hi Reub

Photo's sent.

dangerous ·

Thanks for the kind words Craig.
Yes I think it would be great to see your car out again soon.

I just got in the door from the 3 hour drive home,
and still am smiling about the event.

My Favourite memory has got to be Aaron's Kombi,
and also his dad's first runs at the strip in his camper.

The big wheels-up launch in the first round and the near 100mph terminal speeds
from a 3400lb bus was outstanding!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Had a great trip home and was heaps faster than getting there LOL. Left Warwick at 5.55pm and got home to Bracken Ridge(north Brissy) at 8.02pm. All done in the Hilux slug loaded with heaps of crap and staying with Rod, Pete and Troy towing cars home as well. Time for bed me thinks and ease the pain of some sunburn.....

Was an awesome weekend even if we had issues with the Chop top fuel pressure regulator and with Rod smashing crown wheel and pinion we thinks on saturday. Happy to then help others who needed it and watch Pete be merciless on the lil 1916!!! It didn't give up and ended up runnning into the 8's which was better than we thought!!

Bring on next year I say!!

Dasdubber ·

Its amazing how much less fuel we used and how much quicker it was coming down the range on the way home!

Great weekend yet again - big thanks to the Warwick Drag Racing staff....and Craig and co. for the organisation of the weekend. I think the resurgence in the VW drag scene was well evidenced by the competitors this weekend, as well as talk from many others who were inspired to get out there next year.

My oval ran pretty slow but I had heaps of fun yet again and will hopefully be more competitive (and faster/quicker) next year when the turbo/efi is in place!

Hi Dave,

How did the black beast go?

VWMA Editor ·

Thanks everybody for making the effort to rock up and create another great Warwick event. The weekend high takes a month or two to wear off.

The VWMA '57 Rat Bug had its quickest pass ever on Saturday with a 8.460@81.23mph.

The reaction time was half decent too, with a .426 light. I could be getting the hang of this! Oh, and I got one up on the Vintage Black Bug. Sweet!

Next year, though, I must remember to replace the original fuses.

Black car had N/A combo and a small back fire had some hearts racing.
They came out again later to thrash it some more.
Car has a great stance.

No turbo in sight.

A lot will have to do with funds (or lack thereof) - I'd like to get the turbo and efi sorted sooner than later but the bank balance will dictate progress. 😊

why the change in plans?

dangerous ·

I heard him leg came out.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Bring on next year !!! All plans didn't quite work out , yellow car stayed in shed (parts turned up 9.30 today ) ,Rod killed gearbox second run , 1915cc in choptop went well but driver missed third gear . But event was fantastic still for myself and Rod .
Sat down and watched 2half hours of vid today ( super vid maker - Lisa ) and 83 pics that shows it all . We will be putting another Warwick vid together for all tobuy !
Keep an eye open for a new website soon from Dak-A-Tak

"" Hi Dave, How did the black beast go? ""

yeah we havea massive engine failure on Tuesday arvo, so Rod Penrose was good to lend us an engine for the car complete with carbies n exhaust so we fitted that up and had some fun

The car bogged on one of the burn outs then cleared but bogged again in 2nd and cause a small fire on top of the carby

Boris managed to pull the carby apart and repair the minor damage so we continued racing n having fun

the otehr white car ran perfect all weekend and on teh Saturday we had 17 runs with it

Leigh was the fasted by .01 of a second so he was the driver on the Sunday and ended up winning the Air Cooled class

vw54 ·

Car has a great stance.
Dave did you see our modification to the IRS to get the camber n toe in toe out corrected for the Kombi box

works well hey

matberry ·

Great 2 B BACK.

Matt 😂

dangerous ·

Hi Dave,
I never saw the camber/toe mods.
I would like to see some photos if you have some.
Can send them email if you want to keep it a secret.

vw54 ·

yeah we cut the arms and made to 1/2" plates with 3 holes
you need some shims n bolts easy and a measuring stick

westi ·

hi all,
for anyone that didn't go,you missed out on a fan F...... tastic weekend.
weather was great for spectators if you don't mind a bad case of third degree burn's,i think i might stop glowing red from the burn's sometime this week.
it was realy nice to see some of the cars in the flesh, and to hear them hitting limiters and doing burnouts, what a buzz.
if i was to take any car of my choice home from that day,it would be a hard choice to make ,that is until you hear RR's 48 IDA start up.WOW .i can only dream that my shitter sounds that cool.
i am so jealous of all the guy's that were out on the track having fun.

i can't wait to see what the next year will bring.

fullnoise ·

What a top weekend.

It's a great social occasion. It was almost a pity to spend so much time in the staging lanes rather than watching all the quick awesome sounding VWs. The drag scene has really come alive and I'm stoked just to be out on the track with some of these cars.

My little beetle made it home without a hiccup. But there was one small moment of excitement. We were following a maroon coloured nissan when an XR8 highway patrol car went the other way. I looked in the rear mirror and the flashing lights came on and he did a screaming U-turn. I thought we were gone. What would you pick? A beetle with racing stickers, nose-scraping stance, a popped engine lid and howling webers or a nissan bluebird?

He flew straight past us and pulled over a poor young lady in the bluebird. We didn't hang around to see if he wanted us as well.

Nice work on organising the event Craig. Well done to the huge effort that the teams from Sydney and Adelaide put in to bring their purpose-build racers all the way to QLD.

BeetleJuice ·

I forgot to mention Dave O'Connors red '69 and a black Superbug that I really liked!

What did Dave's run? I didn't see it run on Sunday?

The black super with the Cookie Cutters looked smick and ran hard too! It sounded like a 1916 the way it reved?

dangerous ·

Nah, it was 1915.

Menangler ·

Thanks Craig for another great weekend, great to catch up with everyone again. see you next year.
Dave

fullnoise ·

Hi BeetleJuice,

I think you were referring to Colin's new hillclimb car.

My favourite car from the weekend has got to be Adams Coral Red Oval. Was that a 3rd gear burnout?

[ Edited on 2-10-2007 by fullnoise ]

matberry ·

That would have be third with plenty rpm. Crazy Col's fruitloop did easy 3rd gear burnouts. Must be those IDA's. They were so easy, second burnout I tightened up something in the diff spider gears and thought we were out for the weekend. Thanks to Macca and Ben, they not only gave us thier spare box, they spannered with us to get running again. Gotta love the dak dak comraderie.

BeetleJuice ·

dangerous wrote:Nah, it was 1915.
Dave, you can tell I've been out of the game for 8yrs!🤪

Colin's is one of the best super's I've seen!

What did Dave O'Connor run? Good to see another 68-69 Bug out there!

Matt, Was gunna help, but I was on camera duty!:duh

[ Edited on 2-10-2007 by BeetleJuice ]

matberry ·

Cheers Craig. Couldn't believe the fantastic help from everyone. We had already loaned our starter, & the good kama oozed from everywhere. Boris sorted a mismatch of models with a clutch running ring FITTED. Macca and Ben with the box and fitting, Rod R with a starter for us so we didn't upset Al, afterall Rod's high torque was lighter, I know there were others so thanks to all. Made sunday all the more sweeter!!

Pete ·

Hey guys,If anyone was able to take any snaps of the green baja or geko and could send them to me that would be greatly appreciated!!!,im sure the off road scene was out of place on the strip but it was fun non the less!!!

pete@customoffroad.com.au

thankyou to Craig for a great time out!!

VWMA Editor ·

Like everyone who made the most of every minute of the weekend, I am totally exhausted. With less than two weeks to the deadline for issue#16 of VWMA, I did fall asleep at the computer yesterday.

At trophy presentation, Chris Loy, president of the Warwick Dragclub hinted at a conversation he and I had on Saturday night about future Warwicks, and the effort that goes into organising the event. I probably don't need to state the obvious, but the ask is huge.

However, it would seem I have little choice in the matter about future events. VW Warwick, like the magazine, now has its own momentum, driven by the enthusiasm and energy of the OZ VW scene. Racers and spectators alike want more action events such as these, and it all adds to the excitement of owning and driving Volkswagens.

I'm happy to say after the record field this year and the fantastic support from sponsors, especially VGA, that VW Warwick on the October long weekend is now a permanent calendar event. I've already had enquiries this week about 2008, and been told of at least six more cars to be definitely on the staging lanes next year.

Some one also asked how do you make it better? You don't - the racing makes it a success, and with a few improvements to exisiting facilities and some of the off track functions, the fun element will only increase.

My only suggestion to competitors? Start work on your cars this year - I already have!

Stanley ·

That's fantastic news......now all I need to do is tell my wife that our wedding anniversary will have to change......:duh

dangerous ·

I'll be there with bells on Craig.
Thanks for the huge effort and a great event.

Sides ·

I've got to say that after my first taste of straight line racing, I'm definitely going to be there and running next year.

Can't say enough "well done" and "thanks" to everyone involved - after such a brilliant weekend, the fun and friendly atmosphere has made my, umm.... "pit crew".... into complete Volksie converts !!!!

😁
