Any video of the car?
If I ever stop stuffing around with my 58 an EJ25 would be on the cards for my VWRX too.

Holy crap, that's awesome. The front is pretty low, does it get enough cooling air to where ever the radiator is?
It must be fun to drive.

I see you run a radiator, intercooler and oil cooler all in the tail end. Do you have any comments on how this works? I imagine heat soak would be a big issue but I'm happy to find out otherwise. Also It looks as though you did not move the engine/transaxel forward to much, do you have any early shots of the back end coming together?
Any info/advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers Stephen
sub60 ·
That is very special!! Please tell us more.
quick108 ·
Cooling was the biggest challenge, however, I have it nailed down now. I am using 2 radiators.
The main (C&R) radiator sits just behind the relocated rear firewall. That gets it air via 2 air ducts from underneath the vehicle. This rad also has a big SPAL fan triggered above 90C.
The other radiator is actually a Fluidyne oil cooler. This is the guy you see on top of everything in the center. It gets its air from the roof's airflow.
Also, I replaced the factory oil cooler with a Fluidyne air to air. This sits behind the left rear tire.
Also, I have 2 small SPAL fans mounted to the Spearco intercooler.
Moved firewall (old picture)

cool nice work and good to see you have gone off on your own tangent. Tell me did you keep it a swinger for any particular reason? I bet you don't come off the gas mid corner ever lol 😉
I chose the swing axle setup (with sway-a-way axles) over IRS for superior strength.
I destroyed 2nd gear on my old Rancho ProStreet trans, so I went with aftermarket 1st and 2nd gears on this Rancho ProDrag trans.
Anodized 1/4" Aluminum Plate (STi Motor Mounts to CSP Torque Bars). I have since then swapped out the suby mounts for solid mounts.
This thing will do some nasty wheel stands so I had to fab up a Wheelie-Safe Gas Tank Sump

It says he got it from Outback in the spec... I believe they have now changed their name due to complaints from Subaru though? Price will be on their website...

JP,
You have a VERY nice VW. Some questions for you: you kept it Swingaxle, how did you hide the upper cam covers on the engine? Did you move the trans forward at all? If so how with the swing axle? I have a '67 that I am putting the ej20 turbo into and want to keep the swing axle, but don't know how much the upper cam covers would stick out. Do you have any more photos of that area?
Thanks
Craig
quick108 ·
surfbeetle wrote:how did you hide the upper cam covers on the engine? Did you move the trans forward at all?
The swing axle trans is in the stock location.
Here you can see I fabricated the upper half of the rear apron which sort of "cuffs" the intake cam gears. Otherwise, they definitely hit there, at least with the DOHC.
bugdv8 ·
bloody impressive , nice job on the exhausts .looks sweet . 🙂

Just enquiring re your tacho. Is that an off the shelf VDO unit or only made specifically for the 993? What year etc, would like that for my conversion.
What read out do you get in the LCD area, is it speedo?

quick108 ·
I managed to get the 993 (On Board Computer) Tachometer to read coolant temperature by using a "calibrated" resistor that I ran in series with the Porsche's ambient air temperature signal wire.
I also got the tach to read vehicle speed. I hooked it up to my test bench and sent it a signal with a frequency generator to achieve "60mph". I then measured the wavelength with an oscilloscope and with some calculations, I figured out how many teeth the sensor would need on a 235/45ZR17 tire to achieve 60mph. This works beautifully as it has great resolution. I can read all the way down to 2mph with the EMS.
I mounted a HONDA iVTEC cam sensor (not pictured) to the bearing cap to pickup off these 8 teeth inside the rotor.

sensational work!

Thanks, sounds like the 993 tach is not what im after and out of my league in setting it up...............well done, love your work to date.
Have you taken it to the track yet?
buggyboyshane ·
oh.....my..............god!! im on love!! i registered to this site after someone sent me pics of this car on another forum!!! its perfect!!
im building a ragtop 56 oval at the minute, and its gonna be very like yours to be honest. its a non matching car, and to be honest only bought the shell and picked up a 56 pan also, so not really worrying about how much cutting im gonna have to do.
ok, the stuff ive gathered up soo far, full digital air ride kit, front linkpin, rear swingaxle bolt on rbracket etc from airkewld. also have 17 x7 and 17 x 9 porsche rims chromed turbo twists. behind these will sit porsche 996 big reds, and disks also, i have 1 2276 sitting here brand new but gonna sell it to fund sti engine, which was why someone sent me this link.
the reason im here..............thousand and one questions...........take a deep breath................
have you and more photos of firewall relocation, from inside car and back....
did you have to move your gearbox at all? i want to keep the floorpan as stock as possible without messing with frame horns etc. i want to run rancho super street swing axle box
my main thing i want to keep engine under the lid, very discreet, what about coooling? have you any pics of the car from the front?? valance drilled?
i see you have the 9 inch rears, same as im putting on, much work in this?
sorry for all the questions, but totally inspired! have all the bits sitting here! just wanna get stuck in! well al apart from the engine........... what actual model engine should i be looking for and what do i need to remove from the donor car with it
many many thanks in advance

What is your Radiator set-up like?Issues? And with that Trans ,how's the highway cruising at say 100kmph? Revs?I have a 914 trans waiting, but was considering a simpler Trans upgrade.
see previous post...any pics?
surfbeetle ·
Okay, more questions on your cooling system, what sizes are your rads and oil cooler and where did you mount the oil cooler and second radiator? Did you run the second radiator off of the heater pipes on the engine? How did you tap into the oil for the oil cooler? Is there a fan on the oil cooler? Thanks.

Alden-I don't drive it much. The Pacific NW is rainy in the winter months and hot in the summer months. Today it is 103F!
Pretty soon I will paint it and install a line lock and hydraulic clutch pedal.
Also, what gearbox you using and how is it holding up???

hey i'm a new member and i'm actually here just cuz i saw your car on youtube and i had to find out more. i was wondering how you got the transaxle to bolt up to the subaru motor. and what had to be modified from the firewall. i love this car!!! it's so awesome!!!! i want to try this build on a budget. please tell me what you think about the possibility of that.
Mick058 ·
no budget on that build - or mine for that matter.
'Joel' and 'jakriz' have some pretty good info on self builds though.
My build thread is below in my signature if that helps.

it just takes an adapter plate and flywheel availble from lots of places
not trying to sound harsh but unless your "budget" is $8k or more forget the STI engine
these arent engines you can be cheap with, if you try and install one on a tight budget you will end up with car that has electrical problems, overheating issues, broken drivelines etc
soupkey ·
This picture shows the back of the engine, isn't it?
I would like to see the front of the engine please.
Just want to see how you installed the stainless steel radiator.
Thx anyway quick108.😎
71deception ·
well i have found a sti motor that only has 25k miles on it and i have a lot of extra parts laying around it's lookng like about 600 dollars for that and i can order parts at wholesale prices and i have a few oil coolers laying around. so the real expensive thing is going to be new wiring and the transaxle and the radiatior.
pete wood ·
expect to spend big on a trans. Alternatively, get one of Ttreibler's ring and pinions. $1200 buck and a 5 speed factory trans that will handle the STi motor. Seems like a no brainer to me. VWs trans, expect to spend 3K upwards without an LSD.
ttriebler ·
Thanks Pete.
Check out www.SubaruGears.com for all the info an a Subie trans to match that STI motor
