anyone tried this style of shock on the front of an early beetle.

Nope - but i have neard a down side is the stock fixing point isnt strong enough to take the extra load.

What is wrong with torsion bars??

I have them in my 63 baja. they seem ok but my floorpan is twisted so i use them to compensate for that untill i build an irs pan to put under it. The ones i have are chrome. The yellow ones don't fit without an adaptor plate. You just need to space the chrome ones out a tiny bit. Mine don't seem too hard either.
