Ok, sitting in the sunroom this arvie, watching the world go by, storms roll in n all.....

my blissfull serenity was abrubtly interupted by what I thought was a true sign of the times.......

I noticed a boy running along, and a big flashy looking 'suv' (uno the common term for 4wd for peeps who obviously don't 4wd... if U have seen a true 4wd.. it's not shiny, dent/scratch free etc, some of you may have picked up my sarcasm by now 😉 ) was moving along at young boy running pace.............

Then it clicked.... Mum was at the wheel chucking the local rag out the window, and boy was picking up the papers (good god the woman had bad aim)... and shoving the into the letterboxes.

OK,, hurahh for soccer mums, parents instilling good honest hardworking morals etc... but wtf happened to the 'paper round'? Boys on bikes with a milkcrate alligator stapped to the parcel shelf thing. Idealising ET and his cosmic fueled flight patterns of fancy and the awesome BMX bandits.... Sigh... How can I take the local rag seriously now they are outsourcing parents as alternative 'cheap' labour, is this a sign of the times with fear of peodophiles or is it clever kids working out how to cash in on the new breed of 'emotionally consious' parents?"......Oh the shame of it all.

I noticed this same thing the other week heather, but it was middle aged man throwing papers from the drivers window of his buzz box. So dangerous and so so lazy!

I'mm with you mate .
The little shits er someones angels should get out there on there bikes etc and do it themselves.
Whats the next generation going to do or will the poor old local rag be dead by then overtaken by the computed world we live in , such a shame really but i supose our grandparents probabley look at us much the same way.
Anyway just my thoughts on ther ageing process now i'mm an old 40 year old.

When I was a kid I sold newspapers in the Sunset Old Men's Home in Dalkeith, Perth, every day. After school every day, Saturday with the really big paper and the Sunday Times on Sundays. There were times when my bike was so overloaded that it was hard to control it. It took me a year to earn enough money at 1 pound a week to buy a new bike.

The newsagent had his deliveries well sorted. He had a Ford Zephyr convertible which he drove with the roof down unless it was raining and his aim was excellent. He could lob a paper either side of the car onto the front verandah or the front path.

In those days the paper was rolled, then bent just enough to not break it and for it to not unroll when it was thrown. That's a useless skill these days.

Don't get me wrong, I am not having a dig at delivery peeps, the guy you saw probably has a story behind needing to deliver papaers as an adult, and I empathise with those whom have to go out delivering pamphlets/papers for income given the way economic climate is blowing an ill wind on the 'have not's'. Equally if the pair I saw today were perhaps a mother with a shitbox n the kid running alongside I would perceive it as 'temwork', scraping to get by? But to me it seemed such odd a sight. I have memories of growing up with the milk run and getting the crap blown out of me because I was late for the bus and forgot about the milk 😂 my grandparents had a dog trained to race out each morning to bring in the paper 😎 and even back then there were dudes running around in convertable suzukis etc taking on the 'paperboy' role..........these are all little insignificant things/memories to most nowadays which makes me question the way things are headed. Almost the end of an Icon...Just like the garbos when the wheeliebins came in😵‍💫

If I were a mother in a snazzy suv, perhaps financially stable, enjoying the secure side of life, the best thing I feel I could do for my child is to let him take on a job on his own steam, if he couldn't cope, then too bad, loose the job/pocket money and learn from the experience... not hold him by the hand for a simple delivery round...sheesh, the petrol costs alone would probably gobble up any profits.. hehe 😂

Look at te good side, the kid is determined and the parent is caring. Nothing wrong with that

Nothing at all wrong with determination and caring, thats why I wondered if it was a fear driven thing, where people are so afraid of the risks involved, hence my query of peodophiles in the first post, the daniel Morcombe incident for example.

I did it the right way. worn out long frame dragster bike with a small duffle bag strapped into the gap in the handlebars. 😀
