cb john's project?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/66911/cb-johns-project

ztnoo ·

John,
We haven't heard much about your CB project recently.
I checked your flat4.org thread, but don't see anything new posted there.
What have you been doing?
What are you working on currently?
Have you started on the pan work yet?
How about some pics of any of your new work?
😉

Regards,
Steve

cb john ·

Hi Steve,
didn't spend much time on CB because of preparation work for the first meeting of 2008, building spare engine and box for Vee...
Floorpan needs only to finish dressing up after IRS conversion and weld the halves in.

ztnoo ·

John,
I found your Vee thread @ flat4.org
http://www.flat4.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6008&start=0
It looks like an interesting project......just wish I could find a decent translation engine to understand what you did and what is going on with that. Czech is kind of like Greek to me....but that's my problem.
I think you told me you are fluent in three languages and that is something to be very proud of, and I might add, undoubtedly has been very useful to you.
Can you suggest a web site that might aid in tranlating Czech to English?
Hope you can because I feel like a three year old with little ablility to read.....but who can get some sense of things from the pictures.
😉

Regards,
Steve

cb john ·

Steve,
I'm not aware of any translating engine, I think, that language is quite insignifficant , but I can briefly inform you about the project...

cb john ·

It has been a while since my last post for simple reason - too busy working on CB...stepping to the final stage. The most of the body is finished, now I'm getting ready for final assembly of the body. There are some fiddly bits which can be finalised only with body together.

ztnoo ·

John,
I was wondering aobut your project progress, so I cruised on over to http://www.flat4.org/forum/index.php to see what you have been up to.
Wow! Amazing!!! What a work of art!!!
😵‍💫

How about a text update.............and of course, you know how we all love pictures!!! 😉
👍

Regards,
Steve

VWCOOL ·

yeah that is amazing..
I see that CBJohn has re-created the roof bows, too - I need some for mine. And a roof!

cb john ·

Well, as the completed body, all clamped together, ready for final welding was pushed to the position close to welding equipment, front part of the stand packed in and front hit the ground followed by the “ domino effect” of damage to the rest of assembly….bugger !!!
That put me off CB for some time and being busy with the Formula Vee Shannons Nationals preparations ( we won the title again ), I needed some time to get over frustration caused by mildly said my carelessness….
But those days are over now and I have started again yesterday…front part of the body is being remade, the rest has only minor damages which do not justify full rework.
This changed my entire schedule and next big project is pushed to the distant future, but I’m again as hot to finish it as I was at the beginning.

11CAB ·

Bummer about the mishap, but good to hear you're back into it

cb john ·

Thanks, that helps..

VWCOOL ·

yes, my sometimes work colleague Ben mentioned a minor 'setback'

ztnoo ·

John,
Yikes!
That is a bummer!
Glad you are back on track now and hot to keep going with the projct.
btw......You've probably mentioned it before, but what was the KO # of the original body???

Regards,
Steve

ztnoo ·

John,
I found the answer to my question via the fantastic CB gallery.

Its looking really good! Is it going to be a 2008 or 2009 model? LOL

cb john ·

It looks like 2009 ..

cb john ·

After some unexpected break, I'm back again in full force....remaking complete front end...

11CAB ·

We need more pics.... keep up the great work 😎

cb john ·

I've posted some in my home gallery...some more to come...

ztnoo ·

John,
I roamed around at flat4.org to see if I could find the gallery you were referring to. Took a while, but finally found what I think you were talking about. Great collection of shots!!!
👍
http://www.flat4.org/galerie/thumbnails.php?album=898

Graham, looks to me there are a 110 pics there, whereas your CB Gallery lists 87 of John's pics. I'm not about to determine what you don't have listed. I don't want to spoil all your fun!
😂

Keep'em coming, John!!!
Super workmanship........just magnificent!

Regards,
Steve

cb john ·

A little progress ...

11CAB ·

John, the work you are doing is just incredible..... well done.... so will you be making replacement panels to sell to the rest of us?

OZ Towdster ·

cb john wrote:After some unexpected break, I'm back again in full force....remaking complete front end...
You've certainly got my attention

ztnoo ·

I echo everyone's amazement at what John has created by the sheer force of his obvious skills and his resolve to keep plugging away at his CB project.
While there may be others who have similar skill levels, no one else to my knowledge, had taken it upon themselves to specialize in CB body part reproduction.
Due to the great pics and reports on his continuing work, John is, without doubt, the premier CB body and panel expert in the world.
Amazing , simply amazing!
👍

Regards,
Steve

BrisDubba ·

Wow, as i scan through the pics I think to myself - wonder if I can do that, and then reality hits me that I struggle with a leggo set.. so best leave it to the experts.. but if those lotto numbers come up I will be placing an order for an 09 Buggy.

Keep up the great work and keep the photos and pics coming.

Is it good or bad?

11CAB ·

I think Andrew is talking about front suspension, not front body work

pedies ·

amazing to see one fresh

cb john ·

Ready for paint...

Pastit ·

Hi John, would you be prepared to do a limited run on say front gaurds and lower side panels for CB's? If so what sort of dollars would you want for them?

cb john ·

Guards are no problem, but you need to specify, what you call lower side panels...

Pastit ·

cb john wrote:Guards are no problem, but you need to specify, what you call lower side panels...
The big long panel that runs from front wheel arch to back wheel arch, about 30cm high with two swage lines running front to back. There is a top edge of around 100mm that completes the sill going into the vehicle where you get in. I would have called it a sill in the olden days, the yanks call it a rocker I think.

cb john ·

This is the panel...

Give me a PM...

58camper ·

Johnno,
That sill panel would take away many of the heartaches that some CB people have with their vehicles.
Looks like the painting phase has commenced at your end.

countrybuggybill

11CAB ·

Wow....looking good John

cb john ·

Getting closer...

11CAB ·

Looking good John 😎

ztnoo ·

Amazing John.........simply amazing.
Looks like the Clayton production has officially been moved to Sydney.
Hope to see some pics of that beauty mounted on some running gear shortly.

Regards,
Steve

I'll be up for some guards aswell.
Maybe we could do a EOI on them so you can do a small run?

ztnoo ·

Nathan,
EOI........no comprendo.
Please clarify.
Thanks.
Please excuse the dead air space between my ears.
😉

auditwmba ·

Morning cbjohn,

I am enquiring about the air-cleaner mounting panel complete with the folded section for the VW air-cleaner bracket. Previous owner/s have decided to 'butch it'.

Can you advise price and availability, please?

Thanks and regards

Rob

cb john ·

You've got a PM..

cb john ·

Step ahead..

cb john ·

Another step....wiring....

Craig Torrens ·

cb john ·

This is a little better..

58camper ·

John,

Looking good. What is the estimated "go drive" date ?

Have you decided which motor you are going to run yet ?
countrybuggybill

cb john ·

Thanks Bill, there is still a lot to do...fiddly bits...windscreen is going to be done this week, wipers right after, motor is being built, 1776 and the rest very much stock...as to the date ?... perhaps a month or two...

cb john ·

windscreen installed today...

ztnoo ·

John,
Outstanding, simply outstanding.
Your work is amazing and leaves my head spinning. 😵‍💫
😁

There's only one small problem I note.....
We need MORE PICS!!!
I'm sure Graham, The Gallery Curator, would agree wholeheartedly with that!
👍

Regards from the USA,
Steve

cb john ·

Exhaust system finished today..

ztnoo ·

John.
Looking good!!!
Let's see.....is this a 2009 or a 2010 CB?
;-)

Regards,
Steve

cb john ·

Steve, I need to finish the fuel tank, wipers, bleed the brakes, finish the engine and go for rego...
it is definitely 2009...😀

matberry ·

Well done John, enjoyed seeing this beauty a few weeks back, a work of art.

'09 Country Buggy mmmmm

cb john ·

Thanks Matt, you can see no waste of time...😀

cb john ·

A little step forward..

Craig Torrens ·

Looks awesome 👍

cb john ·

As from today everything is finished, except for the front / rear seats ,(still at the trimmers) and the soft top...will be on the road soon...

11CAB ·

Good to hear John

ztnoo ·

John,
How about some new pics???
The more detailed the better.
;-)

When you get the 2009 CB done. what's next on your agenda?
Retirement? ;-) Holiday at the beach? ;-)
Idle hands are the Devil's workshop.
😂

Great job! Fantastic display of metal crafting skills and dogged determination to create a work of art. Magnificent!
👍

Regards,
Steve (the real one)

cb john ·

Thanks Steve, there is still some tidying up to do...but the summer is getting close and I want to enjoy it first...then I'll think of what I'll do next...probably Container van...

cb john ·

It is a bloody good feeling when the project hits the final stage...

cb john ·

on the road again...

matberry ·

Congratulations John. A 2009 CB....woo hoo.

What plates did you get?

auditwmba ·

cb john,

Two words - absolutely outstanding!!!!

Your dedication and motivation should be example to us (me anyway) week-end restorers!

Still keen for the air-cleaner panel; i will pm you soon.

regards from impressed (Rob)

Bizarre ·

unbelievable!

Now what you going to do??

cb john ·

After F Vee Nationals at the end of this month I'll start a Container Van project...

Matt Ryan ·

cb john wrote:After F Vee Nationals at the end of this month I'll start a Container Van project...
Love to see that. Grew up in an area that had one set up as a mobile shop/ice cream truck. Don't know if it was the vendor spec or if that was added in. Some good memories there.

Making one from scratch should be no trouble for you, once you have an Single cab to start with....even more area of flat panels to build but easier than a CB😂

Regards,

Matt.

cb john ·

As a matter of fact, I do have one in sorry condition, but genuine Container Van...it's a big task, but I think it would make great race support vehicle...

waltermitty ·

CB I know where one is . very sorry state but has all OG hinges etc for the container . very rusty but complete. U2U me if you are interested. Mitchell

cb john ·

The first 120 km on the clock....drives extremely well, it is a pleasure...

ztnoo ·

Great news!
There's nothing quite like a 2009 CB daily driver!
👍

Regards,
Steve

cb john ·

Soft top on, drives well...

cram ·

well done - looks a treat and great workmanship!

ztnoo ·

John,
That top looks pretty nice.
Tell us about the details.....
Did you fabricate the top frame? If not, who did?
Who stitched up the top for you?
Did they install it or did you?
How long did it take to fabricate the top frame and top?
How did all that go......fairly smoothly, or was it a pain in the arse?

Regards,
Steve

cb john ·

Steve, it all went pretty much without any trouble...I did get a good reference on one young trimmer, talked to him, he was keen and I was pressed to have it done quickly. Quoted cca 1500 and did it in a day...
The frame, front and rear brackets I've made myself. I took it to the shop on thursday afternoon and picked up all finished and installed on saturday morning....the side covers are yet to come...thats about all...

cb john ·

ztnoo wrote:John, how about a road test performance report on that 2009 CB of yours???
Given your Formula Vee background, something tells me you might be doing some real tearing about in that beauty.
Have you been to the top end yet?
Had the thing wound out yet to really see what she's capable of???
Since your CB is set up for the street, I suspect you have tweaked that stock suspension a bit........not that anyone else would know......until they can't stay with you in a corner.
😂
👍

Regards,
Steve
Steve, I did not reach the stage of tweaking up and I'm not sure if I will...handles very vell, no difference to IRS / balljoint bug, it seems to be much lighter and 1600 single port moves it fairly quick...I took it up to 140 km briefly / not too many points left 😂 / and I am pleased with handling and performance. What I dislike is a sound of split exhaust system, but it would be caused by the fact, that you hear every sound differently, since the car is open and you really hear everything...

BUGBOY ·

Wow, it looks great and your just in time to enjoy summer. As for the noise I always found they are great with the roof off as it makes a huge difference.
After seeing all the work you have done on this I can't wait to see you take on the the container van.

cb john ·

😂 I drove without the soft top for two days....after three days I would have to change my nick for Crispy john 😂

type3disease ·

Great work - fantastic work...

Shame it's ton wide five but rivieras are easily my fav 4 stud wheels...

Curiously if I may - how did you go about registering it...? Scratch built so what did the RTA need to see as far as vin no.s tags etc...? Assuming it's now registered...?

Cheers Ben

lightice ·

John, are you still fabricating the panels?
Possibly for sale?

cb john ·

😂 to some extent..
