Offroad Trip to Mt Mee

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/66924/offroad-trip-to-mt-mee

11CAB ·

If you're interested in coming along on the 20th Jan let me know. We have some maps and a GPS, so going out for a play.

Anyone welcome to come along.

THUDKNUCKLE ·

oh man im away on holidays from the 19th

Baja Wes ·

That's a Sunday isn't it?

I'll be keen if I don't have any other commitments. I could try and see how my memory is with the tracks.

Did you end up buying one of the big maps, or are you working off the trip guides I scanned?

11CAB ·

Just the scans for the moment.....someone who's been before would be great though...😂

Brad ·

I might even be able to make that. I am guessing you are all driving VW's

11CAB ·

Nah, I think my Brother Inlaw is coming in a suzuki....so you can bring the cruiser if you want.

I've tried to get this up as a Manx Club run, but not having too much success

ancientbugger ·

Can't go, I'm working🙁

Sandy ·

OK, the plan is to meet 9:00AM Sunday 20th January outside or near the Dayboro pub (you'll see us). We will wait until 9:10AM for any stragglers then head off into the forestry for a play, stopping somewhere for morning tea / lunch so we can chat about how good we are etc, so pack some food. I don't know how long we'll be in there or what we'll see as I've never been. Open to all and everyone and all types of off road vehicles, the more the merrier. If you've got a UHF bring it along so the vehicles can stay in contact with each other.
Have I forgotten anything 11CAB?

11CAB ·

With all this rain we've had.....dont forget your recovery gear.......😂

11CAB ·

How about we use channel 23....that way if anyone catches up they can call us.

Sandy ·

OK, UHF channel 23 it is.

Brad ·

Cruiser .. it sounds like a Geko Job to me.

What do you mean tried to get it up as a Manx Club Run ...

It is one now.

OZ Towdster ·

Anybody got a spare seat

11CAB ·

OK, this is now on the Manx Club website as a club run, so if you have your buggy on club rego, then bring it out.

Thanks Brad

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

I would have liked to come to this event (albeit in my Hilux) but unfortunately I"m doing a 3 day tour to Fraser on that weekend. Maybe next time.....

OZ Towdster ·

Thanks Brad

Does That mean i'vv got push too when we get stuck😂😂

11CAB ·

Only if you want to get home.....😂

11CAB ·

Here's the start point

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&safe=off&ie=UTF8&q=hotel&near=Dayboro,+QLD&fb=1&cid=-27192644,152819015,4198243516112791734&li=lmd&ll=-27.171735,152.818966&spn=0.069944,0.159645&z=13&iwloc=A&om=1

Baja Wes ·

I recommend that we change the meeting point. That google map is showing the pub in the wrong place. The pub also has minimal street parking so wouldn't be a very good place to meet.

I reckon the park where Mt Samson Rd crosses the North Pine River would be a good spot
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=-27.2155,152.8336&ie=UTF8&ll=-27.215499,152.8336&spn=0.009217,0.019956&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1

I think the park is called apex park (or it used to be). You won't miss the north pine river, after you cross it just turn off the road to the right into the park. These pics are from the park, there is a little offroading to be had there to warm up and wait for others;

Here's some old pics starting at the Park, and continuing into Mt Mee;

Here's some old Mt Mee pics (it can be quite dusty);

You don't need a permit to get into Mt Mee anymore. There are 2 good swimming holes, Diana's bath and rocky hole. There is also a very good lookout. Most tracks are easy dirt roads. Some of the harder tracks are between the Dayboro end entrances and Mt Mee itself.

Sandy ·

Well the meeting point is already up on the manx club site, so I say don't change it, you'll just confuse everybody. It also says at or near the Dayboro pub. There's plenty of room in Dayboro to park a few buggies, but if you guys want to change it, go for it.

Baja Wes ·

I don't think what's on the manxclub site matters much. That can be changes easily. Most people that are going will check this forum anyway.

When I go past the pub on a Sunday morning for a ride up Mt Mee the pub usually has lots of bikes and large 4wds out the front. Although since I moved I now ride around the top of the dam and don't actually go past the pub to get to Mt Mee so haven't been past recently.

11CAB ·

Thats easy, if we meet at Wes' point at 8.45am, then meet at or near the pub at 9am, you can choose where you want to join in.

My Mobile is 0406 990 905 so you can call me if you miss us.

Baja Wes ·

We'll just meet at the pub. Then I can go the top way around the dam if I like.

Here is the actual location of the Dayboro Crown Hotel;

the impending rain may cause some problems;

Access to State forest and forest reserve roads is not permitted in wet weather or where vehicle tracks sink into the road more than 2cm.

http://203.9.184.225/parks_and_forests/find_a_park_or_forest/mount_mee_state_forest_and_forest_reserve/

and

Flooded roads restrict access to Mount Mee
Both 4WD & convential vehicle access to Mount Mee Forest Reserve is either not possible or not recommended for the next 48 hrs, due to high rainfall and numerous flooded creeks & causeways in the greater area.

Access to the Archer campground is not possible from Woodford either, due to flooding on Rasmussen Road.

11CAB ·

So how's the beach looking?!?!?! 🤪

We cant have two offroad trips cancelled within weeks of each other.....doesnt anyone know we're in a Drought.....😬

helterskelter400 ·

man, thats gotta suck.

i was relying on your mt mee pics Mr Nuts to feed my habit after the calling off of the rainbow cooloola run.....

OZ Towdster ·

So when are you making the final call Graham

11CAB ·

We'll see how things are on Sat

Baja Wes ·

I've got some GPS maps off someone, go here to download them;
http://www.offroadvw.net/mtmee/

MickH ·

You lot should start charging the government for rain causing activities!! Looks like another wet weekend down there as what just hit here is on it's way down........we got a 10 liter bucket full here last night in 4 1/2 hours.....I got caught in it driving at 1130pm and had to stop for 1/2 an hour as I couldn't see where the road was !!!!

rocknrob ·

ahhh queensland...how it used to be👍

Baja Wes ·

The Mt Mee road conditions have been updated;

"Mount Mee State Forest and Forest Reserve - some tracks not traversable due to heavy rains
Heavy weather has made travelling the roads and firebreak network of Mount Mee Forest Reserve difficult and care should be taken on all roads and tracks. Keep to main access roads as some firebreaks and tracks will not be traversable. "

I also went into the EPA office here in the city, and they said it's likely a real mess up there and they wouldn't recommend going this weekend. I know they normally get a lot of problems with fallen trees on the tracks, and lots of little creek crossings that can get washed out badly.

On the up side, I did get a hard copy D’Aguilar brochure which has a simple Map of Mt Mee and the main tracks. I will scan it later.

I think we could go but we'd probably have to keep it to a more simple cruise through the state forest, with a stop at the main attractions like the Rocky Hole swimming hole and the lookout.

Sandy ·

Yes, sounds like fun👎

OZ Towdster ·

Those conditions sound just like what a bunch of mad buggy dudes are looking for , all except one ,guess who ???

Baja Wes ·

If your referring to me 🥲 , I'm trying to encourage the Manxclub to act responsibly and follow the "tread lightly" 4wd mindset. 👍

4wd clubs ripping up tracks like Spicers gap and others in the wet weather is how 4wd access becomes banned.

11CAB ·

Well I'm keen to check the area out as I've not been before. If that means we only do easy tracks this time then so be it.

MikeM ·

Access to State forest and forest reserve roads is not permitted in wet weather or where vehicle tracks sink into the road more than 2cm.

If it's too wet and these conditions cannot be met then it is in your best interest to postpone for another weekend. The last thing the Buggy Heads need is for a ranger to bust us when we shouldn't be there.

The Manx Club has written countless letters to the state government, QPWS, NPA, councils and other agencies to try and keep 2WD access to the SE QLD beaches including Fraser, Straddie, Noosa North Shore and Bribie. Allot of effort has been put in to try and keep us Buggy and Baja heads access to some of the great places we take for granted. Most of our justification for access to these areas is our RESPONSIBLE use of the areas and our tread lightly attitude.

Consider all the future weekends you will miss out on when all the access roads are permanently closed all for one day of fun in the mud.

One more week wont help you.....😂

Bum a lift with Dave

11CAB ·

Well the weather looks great. We'll check at the Rangers Hut at the entrance in the morning if there are any restrictions.

See you all there in the morning

OZ Towdster ·

Sorry boys but myself and Brad? are not available now for tomorrows trip but to the rest of you have fun and we look foward to the pics.
Also on behalf of the Manx Club and buggy dudes in general thanks Graham and Wes for taking the time to do some research and orginizing the run.

Baja Wes ·

Well the weather held out for us (well actually the other may get some rain).

We met at Dayboro, there was (in order on photo below) me (V6 Baja), Neil (type 1 Baja) and Dave (EFI Type 4 Baja). Graham was hopping between Neil and Dave's Baja's, and I had my wife along with me for company.

All Baja's!!! Where are all these buggies that people seem to be building?

I took us in through the easiest of the 3 Dayboro end entrances, straight up to the main picnic area. We had a look for warnings at the main map and rangers hut but couldn't see any. The tracks were suprisingly dry and dusty to start with. There were a massive number of cars (which trailer all the trail bikes) parked at the state forest entrance.

As we started the cars again Dave found out his exhaust had decided to crack, it now sounds like a Harley. I then took us down to the Rocky Hole swimming hole. It is a graded dirt road so all pretty easy. There was a quarry off to the right with a pretty insane looking hill, but no-one tried it. The swimming hole had plenty of water.

We then went in search of the Somerset look-out. The first part I knew well and picked the right tracks through the maze that is Mt Mee. There was another little quarry on the right that we played in, Graham should have some pics.

We went through the little pine plantation section, and then had to turn right off to the look-out. The only prob is there are heaps of right turns, and I picked the wrong one. We went along a track I hadn't been on. We came to a large puddle and I charges into it. It was fine 75% across, and then the left side of the car dropped into a big hole and water came up to the windscreen on the left and pushed water under the bonnet somewhere. It flooded through the air con footwell vents all over my feet. Better than pooling under the bonnet I guess. The others learnt from my mistake and went to the right through the water hole. Shortly after Neil's left headlight fell out and Dave picked it up.

The tracks turned into smaller tracks with lots of water-bars and puddles. I was a bit more cautious in the remaining puddles 🙂 The V6 is good for the water-bar hills, I lugged around everywhere in 2nd gear.

I figured I'd taken a wrong turn and stopped. About 10 seconds later 15 trail bikes went flying past from the other direction, lucky we stopped off the main track, or we might have had a head on. The lead guy came flying up the hill at high speed doing a massive wheelstand, it was pretty cool. I asked them which way to the lookout and they pointed the other way which is what I expected. We turned around and found it easy enough.

I then tried to get us back to the main picnic area. We took a wrong turn, but I realised about 1km down and we did a U-turn. I had a few key points to work with from my Dirty weekends book, although my GPS didn't quite agree with them I could figure out basically where to go.

After a snack in the picnic area I decided to head off home, as I've got a few things I need to do this arvo. The other two kept going and I left them to explore the southern tracks which can be a real maze. It also looks like they may get rained on judging by the BOM. If they don't post here tonight, then they are probably still in there lost 🙂

There are a couple more pics here;
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/mtmee08

Hopefully Graham will stick his pics there later tonight.

11CAB ·

We had a great time, mostly dry and dusty when we went in. There are some great views from the Lookouts. After Wes left we tried a few side tracks to the south and found a few interesting creek crossings.

Definately worth more trips into the area to check out more of the tracks.

There are 105 pics up now, and hopefully I'll get some vid up tomorrow.

Thanks to the guys that made the trip.

MikeM ·

Awesome, looks like you had fun.

Looks like we should plan some more trips up there in the future. Lets get some buggies finished!

11CAB ·

Here's a vid at this creek crossing.....the pics dont really show it, but its oneof those hills you could barely walk up, and these guys make it look easy in the Baja's

Brad ·

sweet, looks like u guys had a great time. I was stuck at home building pool fences and killing Volkswagens to clean the yard.
