Anyone interested in seeing (and hearing) a 1916 cc motor shredding some tires should drop by Mt Cotton for the Queensland championships next weekend and the state round at Grafton the weekend after next (7th and 8th).馃榾
THE Pobjoys are gonna be racing their steroids openwheeler, and I believe there are a couple other ppls with their 1916's entered too.. I'm hoping to make it to Grafton, but can't quite swing Brisbane as a spectator..
Anyone else going to either of these? any fellow 1916's?
Going and seeing what the engines are capable of is probably the easiest way of ending the (now stangely dormant) 1916cc debate
so go and check it all out 馃榾

I have to agree with jak, the more VW's at any motorsport the better. Nomatter whether its a 1600cc stock motor to 2+ L of stroker. the more the better. I only see a green super at the hillclimb normally, there should be more!!
Peter Leonard 路
Yeah, jJak, i have three buggerising reasons why me and my bells aren't racing
1 I work on weekends
2 My car handles like a bag of wet sheep
3 I only just got my cams license yesterday
Hope to be on the track one day, but it's not worth it at the moment with the way the wet sheep keep bleating at me in the back seat. also I'm saving my moolahdosh for some fixing-up-of-car stuff, some of us haven't spent years and thousands on making our cars race ready. It's all in the pipeline..馃檨 (I've been told I should see v-force about my handling/steering/camber problems) seems you've got yours under control, how much does it cost to get a super to handle like yours?
But yeah, I'm gonna try and make it to Grafton, just for a looksee. If you're heading up, Steve, let me know, I'll try to get some time off work, although I'll be pushing it with Nambucca coming up. *fingers crossed*
Now, "rolly", two things fyi : I only have a daily-driver base 1916, not a steroids motor. and it's actually not 'crappy', or 'pissweak', so I guess your wacky comments weren't directed at me.
define 'mouthing off' for me please, and let us know who you are in the great scheme of things, just for kicks.馃榾

While u are there ask to see the all the chromoly bits that I use in my motor.......I'm joking I;m jokng!!!!!!
But back to what this post is about, keep us informed on how the vw's go & we want to see some pics.

Who cares what it is full stop... I will be more than proud once I crame a nice piece of Japanese Engineering in the back of my USA Kitcar which sits upon my Brad Built Floor pan with a few VW parts strapped on to keep Main Road Happy.
It will park in my shed along side my Strocker equiped, dual webber, alloy cased Manx and 1969 VW Beetle "Turd'. Theres no way that mine would beat a V6 Pete, honestly, I really don't think that it would. My father in-law has a late model V6 UTE & it's way quicker than my beetle, although I would hate to go fast around a corner in it.
As for the wheels mate, I got them for $182 each without tyres from Moorebank. Thats a little short of a thousand I think, let alone thousands. Don't be fooled by the flashy paint job (10 years old) & some big wheels, it's taken me 10 years to get the car where it is & I'm pretty proud of it.

Hi Craig,
I'm not quite sure what times u should be aiming for since CT & I run street cars & yours is an out & out racer. If u are looking for competition I suggest that u save your money on the Porsche track days (they are more expensive than others) & go for the NSW road racing series which I think is called Group 7 racing. They have proper classes , actually I think they may even be the same , just like the hillclimbs that u have dominated for so long.
With the Porsche club , since it's one make orientatted, ie: Porsche, they have their own system for grading their own cars, then they have the assocciatted class which is anything that isn't Porsche. This means that we are in the same group as V8 Monaro's , PRB Clubmans (which are faster than the GT3's) WRX's, turbo mazda imports, Nissan Godzillas etc etc, u get the idea.
So CT & I have gone to great lengths to get our cars perfectly even even though they are so different. The power to weight ratio is dead even in a straight line, we even had the same gearbox built, & with my slightly bigger motor 2027 to 1916 & heavier car, 980kg to 760kg we are able to drive around all day side by side literally, which is what we want. It wouldn't be as much fun if one was able to blow the other away. Well we don't think so anyway, depends what u are into I guess & how competitive u want to get.

Jak

Jak,thanks for your reply, although it hasn't really helped with times etc.
An "all out race car", I think you need to actually see my car before making comment about it. It was registered up untill 2000 in its current form, and has minimal performance added extra's due to the class I run.
Brakes= standard type 3
Suspension= lowered balljoint and IRS with t3 bars with bilstein shocks and the usual caster shims and camber adjusters
Swaybars =" off the shelf" whiteline
Wheels= widened STEEL 7x14
All door trims ,hood lining, front seats and carpet remain, as does the heater fan etc
External is all original guards ,bumpers bonnet and doors etc.
What I would see as a usual street car at any VW show!
What a Typical race car has is front and rear spoilers, larger alloy wheels, slotted/drilled discs, (usually rear discs), extra oil coolers, various ceramic coated parts, a better front suspension than torsion bar and more aerodynamic friendly body shape via curved front windscreens etc!
I want to run any supersprint to research setups for my soon to be registered street/targa car !!
P.S If you think being a 76 it must be light,
both doors, bumpers and bonnet are from a 71 model and the rear guards are from a superbug!馃榾馃榾

Holy crap Craig, u just described my car in every detail!!! except for the curved windscreen. Although I do have the back seat, stereo, speakers, lots of soundproofing, seatbelts & child seat hook restraints for my kids (It's a daily driver unfortunantly) The reason I didn't mention times is that U will alomost probably be at least 2 seconds a lap quicker than CT & myself just due to the fact of the Horsepower that your motor puts out, & the fact that we are just hack drivers purely concentrate on keeping our prized posessions on the black stuff right way up. We don't have any prior driving experience although years of BMX & mountain bike racing keep my reflexes up I suppose but apart from that we are real novices in the purest sense.
Thats why I suggested that u race the group 7 series & give those Twin cam datsuns hell. They are in I think a group 2e class but they run slicks & Avgas etc, they would get quite a scare if u turned up. They won't let me run in their class as they don't consider my car a street car with the spoilers. A couple of years ago I won the class at Oran Park against Mazda Mx5's & Datsuns 1600's etc, but the clark of the course rang me during the week at work & said that I wouldn't be getting a trophy as the other drivers in my class had protested because of the front spolier & rear wing, they said since they wern't factory items that I should be racing with the Sport Sedans. Close but no cigar. So I've resigned myself to just putting around with big brother Porsche.

Hi Doug, Yeh I did have the shakes in the early days, that was back in 92, but I ended up just having the front wheels balanced on the car, it cost roughly $25 each & that solved the shakes. Most times it's an accumalation of the disks being out of wack, the tyre not being round or the actual wheel having had a knock somewhere in it's life. Another thing u can try is just rotating one front wheel at a time in it's stud pattern. Then take it for a drive & see if it still shakes. Just get a marker pen & mark where the wheel originally was bolted to the disk so that if one side doesn't work u can then try the other. It may save u some cash. A front strut brace stops the shakes as well.
Hope this helps.

Jak
PS the 14 inch hurricanes didn't touch the lower ball joint but they did slide badly against the stone guard, I just took them off.

Peter Leonard 路
Great turnout at grafton, perfect weather, nice people, shitty fuel... everything was great til i got a tankful of dodgy fuel on the return trip at Nabiac, forcing me to stop at Buladelah overnight while the NRMA tended to my sick bike. apart from that, the crowd loved the volksy contingent (lotsa comments heard while spectating) and spoke to colin from tamworth in his supershiny black bug, saw astro and his kids (hope they're over the nintendonitis 馃槈) and watched some seriously overpowered dubs shredding the track. you don't realise just how well the humble dub motor holds its own til you see it race against toranas and hondas and other 'powerful' cars. real eye opener. the first two corners were HELL STEEP which made a few cars display their underpoweredness, while the dubs just seemed to eat it up. yes dammit i'm biased to VWs, but it's true, the dubs kicked ass. Stan ran a blistering 47. something on his first opening lap at practice, after which his tyres seemed to go hard. bummer really, cos the open wheeler of his blew away all sorts of insanely powerful cars, when it got traction. wayne penrose had a magnificent lose in his type 4 powered bug, fishtailing it from one side of the track to the other, collecting tyre walls and crushing both rear guards and (he told me) completely flattening his exhaust system. undeterred, his car was back out next run, with about forty kilos of gaffa tape holding it together. wtg wayne 馃榾 gotta fix that fuel leak on the combi too... that was scary...
colin's (i think 1916cc) bug shamed a bunch of sedans into little bits, and jeff unwins turbo wrx powered "hatchback" was pretty quick too, although it looked a lot more like a notchback (thanks commentator... 馃榾) also the formula v's kicked some ass and Peter Gumleys supercharged (combi?) motored entry i believe was fastest on the day with something incredible like a 43 second run... BEAUTIFULLY turned out open wheeler. realllly expensive and pro looking. Craig torrens's course record still stood at the close of sunday and wasn't pipped by some guy in a integra/supra/escort something shiny, who had incredible handling, something like a couple of seconds behind Craig's AMAZING and UNTHREATENED 1916cc powered sexmobile (again soz to Craig hehehe). didn't have to defend it, Craig 馃槈 i've got many pics, just have to get them developed.... by which time you'll all be fairly old, and may have forgottten about this crazy dub obsession...
i can't say i recommend riding a bike at three in the morning at 2 degrees at 110 for very long, but it was worth it to see all the dubs kick ass. thanks muchly to the Pobjoys and their northern hospitality for taking a frozen biker in overnight to defrost... the power of that 1916 open wheeler is mindblowing. next time better have another set of tires, so they actually grip the road... i heard a few people complain about the temperature of the track, but everyone gave it a damn good slugging nevertheless. don't kid yourselves people, dubs ROCK at the hillclimbs 馃榾
