Since Derek and Lee's bus is all done and they will be shortly on their way to Melbourne to live....another mate (Rod) has enlisted my help to give his chop top drag beetle a quick once over.
Most of you would already know this car - most recently with Pete driving it at warwick with a 1916 engine they had laying around. It looks the goods as-is but rod just wanted a tidy up and repaint - nothing major which is a change for me!
Here it was last week out with the old (Derek's camper) and in with the new (chop top)
Dasdubber ·
Today I finally got started by filling a heap of holes from the years gone by of different brackets/breather hoses and miscellaneous other stuff no longer in that position! The masking tape was to remind me which holes not to fill 😉
After filling, the welds were ground down from inside and out so its all smooth.
There were a few (big and small) holes in the pan - no rust though - whoohoo!
A few more holes in the custom "parcel tray" - Rod has given me the ok to post pictures, but I won't reveal any secrets, only the bits I am working on!
Dasdubber ·
Previously with a raised tranny the shift rod was positioned above the tunnel - now its back in the tunnel so this hole had to be filled as well:
I quickly hand formed a patch piece and even though its a race car where looks aren't everything, I couldn't just weld a flat plate in and have it looking like a bodge job!
All done:
matberry ·
Gee thanks Al.
All looks very familiar!!!
Dasdubber ·
The battery cut off hole was too big from a previous cut off switch (plus two extra holes along side the big one)....so they were all filled today...
Switch trial fitted and ready to go. Rod/Pete if you are reading this hopefully you have the second nut for the switch as it only had one on there - I guess you'll be able to track another down otherwise the threaded shaft will stick out a mile.
That's it for today....Rod's just got to decide what to do with the guards (replace or reuse). I've got a bit of work to do on the decklid next, then start prepping for paint - should be a lot faster than the last couple of restos since it is already pretty bloody straight!
Alan
Dasdubber ·
Ah yes....forgot to mention this is the old Volksrestore car (I'm sure someone has pics - all mine are pre-digital camera so not on my puter!)....Matt can certainly fill us in on some history of this little beast! I love having it my garage, it is a pleasure to work on it....its cetainly giving me more motivation to save the pennies for the big engine for my oval and get it on the strip as soon as possible!
😀
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Man it's not easy to get into the back of this thing with the roll cage especially when you are my size. Alan you will prolly have the same problem fitting in there too!!!
Can believe all the speed holes are being removed from the fire wall LOL
Dasdubber ·
Yep, Rod might have to find a few pounds to save from elsewhere in the car now all the holes are filled 😉
I've been bed-ridden with a shocker flu so haven't progressed much unfortunately - pulled the front guards off to get a feel for the "volks-rod" look....man its nice not finding any rust hiding anywhere!
Brendann, let me say I had to adopt some pretty awkward/uncomfortable welding positions in the back whilst working on the firewall! I made sure the fire extinguisher was within arms reach as I wouldn't be able to get out of there very fast!
RAZ34 ·
No pressure Al but the cars first event will probably be the Brisbane Hot Rod Show . We might have to talk about that roll cage.
Dasdubber ·
No probs Rod, have you decided on what you want to do with the guards? Stick with what you've got, or changing them?
Once I get my teeth into it, I dare say it will come together pretty fast so fear not 🙂
bond ·
black gaurds! 🙂

Hi Allan ,What has been happening on car ? Have you spoken to Rod ?
I'm to lazy to ring ,mate . Sorry !
Dasdubber ·
Yeah Pete, have been emailing Rod - just waiting on the guards he is trying to track down. This week will see some more progress (hasn't been anything exciting lately so no pics). It will start to move pretty quickly from now on!
Dasdubber ·
Been doing a few littly fiddly jobs lately that seem like there is little progress - I've finished buzzing back the paint in readiness for sealer/primer. This is again not a back to bare metal resto - just a nice respray for a race car (which was the brief from Rod and Pete).
Doors are off and a few repairs done. Rain came this arvo which halted further progress but more tomorrow!
matberry ·
Dasdubber wrote:..man its nice not finding any rust hiding anywhere!
Think you'll have a hard enough time finding any steel under there!
Dasdubber ·
I've found a couple little holes on the inside of the passenger door but nothing major....but remember I am not going to dig deep and uncover more work! Luckily it doesn't see much rain hey Matt!
Rod, if you read this let me know if you want the cage painted (left a message on your moby today).
AL
Craig Torrens ·
not much metal in the front !
they all look stock outside..............but not in reality !
Dasdubber ·
Yeah the chop top has been on a bit of a steel diet!
Today saw a bit of progress, both doors and a few bits saw some primer after prepping them yesterday....luckily I have an understanding wife who lets me store vw parts in the spare room (they have to be clean though which is understandable!)
Dero ·
Thought for a sec you were going to say you sleep with VW parts.... 😏
matberry ·
He does.
Just not with the camera.
reub ·
I love this car.... and it's great to see the work being done here too Alan👍
Dasdubber ·
The prep of the rest of the body (external) was finished today (400 grit on dual action then 400 wet and dry by hand). The picture doesn't look like there has been much progress but apart from a clean and mask it is ready for primer.
The roll cage was scuffed with a scotch brite pad (grey - there are different grades of coarseness) also in readiness for primer. I spent the rest of the arvo masking up the inside as obviously paint overspray will go everywhere when I paint the cage.
Takes a long time to mask around every nook and cranny but its getting closer.

Yeah...but only the really special parts! The other night my wife said either she'd kick me or my new Erco alloy wheel out of bed....I ended up sleeping on the couch....with the Erco 🙂 hehehe
decked dubby ·
Nice work Alan.
Dak-A-Tak ·
Hi ! Allan we have some rear guards coming, for you to work with . Will pick them up next week-end .
Rod and I will call in soon ,mate .cheers
Dasdubber ·
Finally a bit of progress today - after sanding, scuffing and cleaning, the masking paper/plastic/tape went on:
Took a long time to mask around all the curves and nooks - also had to make sure it wasn't going to blow around during painting.
Primer on - black and red is gone!
I was pretty much covered in primer by the end of the day as I had to crawl under the cage into the back to paint the back side of the bars!
After this pic (the first coat) I pulled the Fuchs off for better access.
This arvo I straightened up the doors - nothing major just a few dings here and there. The passenger side was a lot worse than the drivers. I'll reprime them after final body work tomorrow, and then get onto the body-body work (I like to let the high build primer cure for at least a day as it will shrink slightly). More tomorrow hopefully - maybe even get the cage in colour if all goes to plan.
Al
Dasdubber ·
Today was good - cage got rubbed back lightly, cleaned then shot with a dark metallic silver base then clear. Access made it really hard to get good even coverage (of both colour and clear) however it turned out pretty well.
Pic is a bit blurry but kinda shows the colour.
After masking was removed....
Final body work is complete on both doors and reprimed. Will just need a final rub before paint. Started on the body this arvo before bad light stopped play.
The ever present site supervisor made sure there were no extended rest breaks....at one stage she threatened to shut down the site because I was wearing thongs so to avoid a strike I complied and put my double pluggers on (could have had a blow out in the single pluggers!).
rocknrob ·
with ya there on the double bungers🤓 do you know k-mart had em on special recently so stocked up...two pair for $12!!😂
Dak-A-Tak ·
Hot Hot Hot Allan, fantasic work mate . This time around car is all Rods ,just how he want it ! cool !
We just need to find,, one hell of a engine ,to power it.
Rear guard are going back to stanard to . Great work AL !!!!
Midlife crisis ·
Looking good.
bugboymatt ·
More fantastic work from Allan's Veedub Resto stable.
Great to see.
Dasdubber ·
Got some donor guards from Damo - on the surface they looked quite good. I've seen many in my time and they even fooled me!
Packed them into the oval and off to the blasters...
No complaints Damo so don't worry mate! Because the insides were crusty I couldn't feel the tell tale signs of previous repairs (apart from the obvious ones which I knew already). This first dent had a lot of bog and looks better in the pic than it actually is.
We intended to get them soda blasted but the guy who does it in yatala is sellling up so the new owner is not operating yet. So I just had to find a local blaster - in this case they used steel shot which obviously is coarse and something you'd never use on flat panels, however for the guards there are no issues of warpage....made quick work of all the bog!
This was one of the worst guards - not sure why whoever did the repair didn't panel beat it a little better rather than using so much filler. Admittedly the final finish was pretty good so they spent quite a bit of time getting them straight, just not in the right way.
Dasdubber ·
This will keep me busy for a while.
I knew about the rust in the headlight bucket before blasting so that was no surprise.
One guard had two indicator holes - both of which will be patched up (properly)
More filler covered this dent as well.
Probably the worst of the cover-ups.
Unfortunately this type of "RUST REPAIR" still goes on in some shops today.
Dasdubber ·
Like I have said a few times before, the cost of a restoration will be determined by the time spent by the restorer. To bog up dents and rust will save time and money, but you get what you pay for. To do it properly takes time, which equals money.
I guess I post all these pics as a bit of education for the masses. Sometimes all looks rosy on the surface but once you dig deep the problems start to surface. This is why I can totally understand why one cannot give a fixed quote with no variation for panel/paint unless you can deliver the car in bare metal after having it stripped. Otherwise one would either have to put a huge buffer in to account for the problems, or have to cut corners to avoid working for free. Also you have to compare apples with apples - I've heard people say "but I got a quote from XXXX smash repairs and it was so much cheaper than your quote"....if you can guarantee they would take the same care and give the same attention to detail in the workmanship and they are still cheaper then go for it! Unless you can guarantee their workmanship though, it is hard to compare costs.
I really like to get cars back to bare metal for this reason....but it means more dollars. In this case we didn't take the body back as Pete and Rod know the history, and it wasn't warranted for the application (drag racing only).
Anyway, enough edumacationing...
I started the hammer/dolly work on the first dent and started the file work - similar to using a guide coat on the primer, it shows the high and low spots. I am waiting for my 'shrinking disc' to arrive though and will explain/show that once I get the hang of it. I won't be able to get it perfectly smooth in metal but will get very close so only a skim of filler no thicker than say 3mm will be required (rather than >1.5cm as found in some spots).
On the better front guard, I cut a filler patch for the indicator hole - the better the fit, the less filler required. Obviously haven't welded it yet, its just sitting in place for now.
Hopefully a bit more tomorrow arvo and over the long weekend. Don't worry Damo, Rod and Pete....I'll get them looking good! For anyone wondering why the change in guards, the previous rears were cut short on the back edge, and Rod has plans for the fronts for another car some time in the future.
Al
Dasdubber ·
Right front guard took some time to get into shape. After quite a bit of beating, only a thin skim coat of filler was required where all the dents were. I was conscious of keeping the thickness to a bare minimum.
Rod has found another pair of front guards so the above one will be a spare at least! I'll get the new ones blasted next week, and maybe we'll track down a new pair of rears too. The time (and $) spent fixing these guards will probably be higher than paying for a better set.
So, back onto the body - there was nothing major to repair - just a lot of little dents. Pete had done a good job with the last repaint, so that saved some time for me. Here it was after the final repairs, sand, mask and clean:
This is the final coat of primer - I could have just used a sealer but I like to use one last coat of high build so I can rub it back with guide coat just prior to base coat application (maybe in a couple of weeks depending on guards and decklid work).
If this was a show quality job, I would go through another round of block sanding, skim filler, guide coating etc etc to straighten any last imperfections out. Rod didn't want it too nice though as it is a race car after all 🙂
Glad I don't give roll cages as Christmas presents - took bloody ages to wrap it up! This to protect the metallic grey/silver already applied whilst priming the outside as well as when I spray the inside with satin black.
So now the doors, bonnet, and body are all ready for their final rub back before base coat. Just the guards and decklid to go before some colour finally goes back on!
Al
matberry ·
Mate dunno why your wasting all that time masking, the cage was designed to out of the body, just undo the perimeter bolts, lift her up and the cage drops out the bottom, no seals either to worry about either.
matberry ·
Forgot to say
Looks good , sh1t hot actually.
Dasdubber ·
Cheers Matt - painting the cage was kind of an afterthought - if we were going to go that way from the start I probably would have pulled the body.....but then I would have run out of space as you can see I only have room for one vw in the garage at a time (for now!) 😉
thanks for the kudos, can't wait to see it back on the track this year some time.
Al
Dasdubber ·
Interior pre-paint - patches of grey are etch primer over repairs.
After a couple coats of cheap satin black chassis paint (to keep costs down) things are looking tidy once again.
I would have liked it to be a little flatter (bit glossier than I had hoped) - Rod/Pete - let me know if this is an issue and I'll get some flatter black and reshoot it. Its nowhere near a full gloss but it is a little shiny.
there is a bit of dust on the floor in this pic just so you know 😉
Al
So now I just have to get the new front guards blasted, and will wait for the new rear guards and donor decklid. Once all of those are shaped, primed and blocked the body should be ready for paint!
Dasdubber ·
Rod tracked down some new front guards:
Got them blasted today and fortunately they are both pretty pristine - no rust and hardly any beating/shaping to do....happy days. Just need to fill the indicator holes and smooth them out then shoot them with etch, high build and ready for a final rub.
No dents in the rear:
And none up front!
These old things are a dime a dozen - I offerred Rod a carton of beer for them, but funily enough no deal. They will also get the DAS resto treatment!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Looking Good there Al. Mate it this thing is ready by the time Warwick comes around I will be a busy boy trying to look after 3 cars plus Troy in his type 3. Not looking so relaxed this year....
cram ·
good work as always das!
Dasdubber ·
After a bit more work on the front guards whilst they were in bare metal, I shot them with etch primer then high build primer today. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get a guide coat on and preliminary sand - I can see a couple minor imperections to sort out...then will reprime.
Al
VWFREAK ·
Great stuff, can't wait to see the end product. A quality product as always, I'm tipping.
humpty ·
Holy cow Al.... Top effort.... So tell us.... Is there a totally new look in the pipeline?
kroozzn63 ·
wow looks like its gunna be the new rat patrol/dragger
Dasdubber ·
I wouldn't say a totally new look - but just a little more "street" inspired 🙂 (as much as a chop top drag bug can be!)
Got a donor rear decklid off Rod yesterday so I'll get to work shortly on mod'ing the current decklid to tidy the lines up a bit, also should get the rear guards in the next day or two (ended up going with repro guards since it was more cost effective than me repairing another pair). Starting to get tight on the time lines now as I've had a lot of stuff on in the last month, however it should see some paint (colour) very soon!
Al
humpty ·
But you still haven't told me the colour scheme....😵💫
Dasdubber ·
I guess you'll have to wait (don't worry though, not too long!). Steff (dubcrazy) has hooked me up with a good deal on a couple new spray guns so as soon as I get them (and after I do a final sand with 400 wet after guide coat is applied), your wait will be over Simon!
😂
Dasdubber ·
Still plugging away on the guards - sanding of the high build primer revealed a few areas that needed a bit more attention:
....and then back into primer...
Repetitive stuff yeah? This is kinda the boring slow bit that feels like you're not making progress, however soon comes the fun part (colour).
westi ·
i can't wait, the suspence is killing me.hurry up with the paint already.
it's gona look tuff.
big fan of your work.when do you sleep.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
When he's tired I spose😁😁 and by the looks it not for very long......
Dasdubber ·
Yeah I get by with not a lot of sleep!
Today I finished fixing the blemishes on one of the front guards - reshot it in primer then shot the inside of the front guards with stone chip paint.
The rear guards will receive the same - that way when chunks of Rod's slicks fly at the guards at whatever linear velocity 7000 odd rpm equates to during a burnout, the new paint should still remain chip free!
Unfortuately George didn't have both rears in stock at the moment and only one arrived via courier yesterday....hopefully he'll get the other guard next week!
Al
Dasdubber ·
Oh yeah, forgot to add tonight I managed to finish the final rub down on both doors, the roof, front and rear quaters and door jambs. Tomorrow after work (if I get off work early enough) I'll get the bonnet sanded then start masking up so I can shoot the inside of the doors and jambs etc...gotta get the chop done pretty soon!!
Dasdubber ·
Got a fair bit done today - re-stone guarded the inner guards (on body), and finally got some colour on the body (door jambs, inside doors, bonnet surround (where seal retainer normally is)). Won't show any pics until I shoot the outside of the body which may be a week or so at the most [need to sort out the decklid and wait for the other rear guard first].
Talk about gloss! I bought a new Devilbiss GTi Pro gun today (well two guns - one for base and one for clear)......definitely money well spent as the clear laid down so nicely it made me wish I had bought them earlier!
Al
kroozzn63 ·
a man that knows his tools , love the work
Dasdubber ·
Forgot to say a huge thanks to Steff (dubcrazy) for hooking me up with the supplier for the guns - much appreciated mate!
Dasdubber ·
Things have been slowly but surely ticking over as time is getting tight now for me to get it back to Rod and Pete so they can reassemble in time for the Brisbane Hot Rod show next weekend. I've been tied up with other things but should be a big weekend ahead!
Been working on the chop top after work at nights...
Rod requested the front horn grills be filled for a smoother look:
Patch panel cut to shape, butt welded and ground smooth:
I seriously have to shell out on a new mig, mine is starting to play up again (after having it fixed not that long ago)...still doing the job for now, just slow and a bit jerky.
Dasdubber ·
Since I could only get the right rear repro guard, I had to find a good second hand one - this was really straight which was nice, just needed a crack and a bit of rust fixed, plus rear bumper holes filled to get that super smooth look!
The repro guards had the holes for the tail lights in the wrong position so I drilled the new ones to match the OG guard on the left, and then filled the other holes after this pic.
Patch panel clamped in place:
Welded and smooth yet again.
After these shots a skim coat of filler was applied, knocked it back with 36grit with hand block to get it to shape, then with 80 to smooth out the scatches. Hit it with a guide coat (3M dry coat) then more sanding with 120 to show the low spots. Another bit of filler to bring up the minor low spots, more sanding with 80, then 120.
Tomorrow should see some primer again and more guide coat/sanding/priming/final sanding....I feel paint is very close now!
Al
humpty ·
Excellent stuff Alan.... Keep it coming mate... We all sitting in front of our PC's waiting in breathless anticipation!
Stanley ·
top stuff indeed Alan....i'm about to launce into exactly the same stuff on the new project...👍
That is correct in your previous post 36grit and 80grit post welding?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Top Job Al!!
Hopefully everything goes smoothly this week to get ol girl to the Hotrod show in time!!
Dasdubber ·
Stanley wrote:That is correct in your previous post 36grit and 80grit post welding?
Use whatever works for you but I find a 36 grit disc on either my angle die grinder (like a quick twist on disc) or on a high speed air sander (this is my new favourite tool!) works best for me. 36 grit knocks it down fast, you can switch to 60 or 80 after that just before the welds are flush with the metal to avoid deep scratches in the metal itself.
Well, what a day....just finished up for the day (night?) - trust me Brendenn I'm trying hard to get the chop top done ASAP!!
Today all the guards were reprimed and then tonight sanded (320 dry, then 600 wet). I found the base coat just shows the sanding scratches through if left with 320 dry (even 400) so hitting it with the 600 wet will avoid any unsightly scatches showing through the top coats.
Anti chip coating was applied as well.
Tomorrow (after a surf as it was epic this arvo....hopefully the same tomorrow!) should see final sand on the roof and doors (everything else done), then mask....and if all goes to plan paint!
Al
Dasdubber ·
By the time of this post you can probably tell I've been having a few late nights lately!
This morning saw the final sand of the chop top (ended up having to resand with 800 grit wet to ensure sanding scratches weren't visible). Then the masking started (thanks to my wife Katie for her help today!)
You might notice a new surrounding for the background of the pictures...guess who has a new shed!! More details soon - this is what has been keeping me busy lately!
Just another view.
Dasdubber ·
After lots of time masking and cleaning (after spending last night till 1am sanding!), the body was ready for paint. It was nice to see some black (yes that is the colour!) base coat flow down. Then some clear afterwards. As you can see from the light outside day turned to night by the time I was ready to lay down the paint.
Here is the rear right guard after 3 coats of clear (over the "back in black" in base).
You can see that the body turned out pretty straight.
Again thanks to Steff for the lead on the new Devilbiss Gti pro guns - I just need to save the coin for a screw compressor to get clean, dry reliable pressure air delivery to make the most of the guns.
I had to slip one mug shot in! Unfortunately since I haven't had the chance to get the feel for the new guns there was a few sags and runs which will be fixed with colour sanding. Once I get the booth set up the imperfections will be reduced drastically!
Dasdubber ·
So your wait is no longer - the chop top is black as black can be!
Tail lights and running boards of course painted as well. Decklid still needs some fabrication and then paint.
Probably my favourite shot of tonight - like it has been dipped. Pity a few bugs settled in the clear - all will sand/buff out though. Booth setup starts on monday fortunately.
Quick shot of the shed - all the crap on the right is part of the full down draft booth - will free up some room as it gets installed.....DAS Resto Haus will be ready to trade soon!
humpty ·
Damn Alan.... You da man!..... I so wish I could throw paint like that.... A master for sure.... Wish you all the best on the new endeavor and with work like this, you will have the peeps knocking your door down.... Make sure you have your brand on the door.....

Is that instead of the Hearing Business or as well as?!?
You sure will be busy either way 🤖

Hearing business has been sold - I am currently an employee for the new owners for a few months....then full time with the resto business! Will take quite a while to set the shop up properly (when funds allow).
Cheers for the kind words - was a bit hard to avoid sags in the clear without adequate lighting (should have prepared a bit better) - can't wait for that booth! It is a second hand one, but I will give it a new coat of paint etc after it is installed.....new ones were well out of my budget! A necessary installation though not only for one's health, but also because as a business it is compulsory - there are a few businesses on the gold coast that are spraying without a booth daily, the council will probably catch up with them one day.

Das,
As always your skills astound me.
Good to see you have the Resto business underway. Would be good to be in your shoes and turn something you love passionately into your business. Wish you all the best of luck - the other Resto places on the Goldie had better watch out!!!!
Just a quick question - How come the guards are hung to paint this beast rather than do them off the body?
As it is a drag bug is the rubber moulding between the body and guard done away with or is that in place already?
Dasdubber ·
Thanks westi, Kevin and Matt.
Matt, with regards to the guards on the car - there are several ways you can approach it. In this instance the inner guards were coated in anti stone chip and hence didn't need painting (if the inner guards were painted gloss black I would have painted the guards off the car). The bolts are all loose and there is a gap between the guards and body so the paint can get to the surfaces where the beading sits (yep it will go back on).

Hi guys, thanks again for the kind words - having a quick break after our anti-natal class tonight (first bub coming soon) and heading back to the shed now to do some more colour sanding.....lucky I have an understanding wife!
With regards to the work and cost - I have quite a few cars lined up already however a few have had changes in plan and therefore have dropped out of the line-up. In terms of cost I still have to nut out the details but I will be approaching it on an hourly rate basis and will work to the budget of the customer. The finished product will obviously reflect the time I spend on the resto - obviously the better quality you want, the more time is needed, and of course more $.
Once I get better set up I'll touch base with you guys.
PS Don't worry westi, I have a couple others lined up from down south.....but there are a few qld'ers already in the waiting list!
Stay tuned, better get back to work.

PS more pics later tonight when I get back from the shed.
kombimatt ·
Al,
You gonna have a website to show your wares off just rely on the forum?
Good luck with your venture - bet the list is bloody long already!
Got a few of my own I could line up as well.
Dasdubber ·
Matt, website will come with time - at this stage I don't even have a phone line or internet access at the shed - I've had a few kind AVD/dsk members offer some assistance already which will be appreciated in coming months.
This afternoon (after normal work) I colour sanded the right front quarter (I've gone through this process before but briefly it involves sanding with 1500, then 2000, then I use a Trizact 3000 grit all on the small orbit dual action palm sander....then cutting compound on compounding pad (low speed), then swirl remover with softer polishing pad (slightly higher speed) on a variable speed sander/polisher).
Driver's door was done next, then I had to pack up to head to anti-natal class so we could learn how to pop a rug rat out!
Dasdubber ·
Despite looking pretty good in the above pics some of the sanding scratches didn't buff out so I had to repeat the above processes spending more time on each step to remove the scratches from the previous stage. So tonight after heading back to the shed the front quarter and door was redone.
The fluro light helps to show any scratches. The right rear quarter was also done tonight - when you do a black car, it has to be spot on as it shows bloody everything! Hence why I am still up at 1.20am - if Rod chose white I would have been in bed long ago 😉 hehehe
Managed to get the left rear quarter done tonight as well before having to pull up stumps as I have to work tomorrow. Splitty is a double door panel that I used to own and recently sold to Ben (whose notch I painted last year - it will be up for sale shortly so if interested shoot him a PM (whereisfelicity is his username). The splitty will get some rust repair soon and then on the road ratty!
This is pre-colour sanding (off the gun) - on the last coat of clear the atomisation was poorer than the first two coats due a semi clogged filter so there was some peel in areas - if you look at the power cords of the buffer and the rags on the milk crate in this pic and the one below you can see why this process is worthwhile doing.
And post colour sanding:
Better get to bed - will be a late night tomorrow as well if I am any chance of getting the chop ready to give back to Pete and Rod on Wednesday night!

I've always loved this car from I don't remember when, an can honestly say this work has taken it to a new level.
Not wanting to jump on the 'blow wind up Alan's bum' wagon, but this work is fucking awesome dude! As I've mentioned to you in the past.. love you work.
It also confirms how much I want my oval to be black, along with the hard work required to get the results seen here.
Not that you need it mate, but good luck with your venture into providing a resto service. Can imagine there would be no shortage of people happy to pay the price to get top quality work done by someone who truely loves their old volksies and is willing to nurture them back into better then new condition...

Far out (said with a lot, and I mean a lot of emphasis). It looks like black chrome 👍 Beautiful.

It's really KOOL to have a VW enthausiast passionate about doing great work on VW's! 😎

Dasdubber ·
I love this stuff....I live, dream and constantly think about vw's - sounds corny but is certainly true.
Early night tonight in readiness for a big finale tomorrow as Rod and Pete will be picking it up tomorrow evening. So tomorrow I need to sand and buff the bonnet, roof, all four guards and the door tops/rear quarter tops (ie. the parts above the chrome trim line)....so lots to do but at least I have all day to devote to it!
Got the passenger door and front quarter finished tonight:
In the previous pic you can see the lines of the spray booth panels laying on the ground have a very slight wobble in them....likewise you can see it in the lines of the roller door in the below pic (despite photo being a bit blurry due to camera movement with no flash)....like I've said before, I don't claim to build perfect cars (far from it), but I do enjoy building nice cars that are meant to be driven and enjoyed (and in this case one that will have the $hit flogged out of it on the strip!).
Providing my arms don't drop off tomorrow, should have some more pics tomorrow night.

Mate all the best with the new venture.
Your work as others have said here and on the other forums is fantastic. A true credit to you.
I'm sure you will have very many happy customers.
As it's a true passion for you others will gain from it too.
All the best mate.

Dasdubber ·
Cheers guys - looks like I will have to be a little more careful with future photos eh? hehehe, good to see I could put a smile on your missus's face Mac!! 🙂
Bit of a mixed day today - trying to rush to get the colour sanding finished ended up with a sub standard result for the roof (and less so the bonnet). Having not spent enough time on each step of sanding, some of the deeper sanding scratches still showed through after buffing....bugger! Bit disappointing but it will remain as is until after the Hot Rod show and then I'll get it back to remedy the problems. I also have to do the decklid as I ran out of time as well - almost got there!
Rod and Pete came down late this arvo and picked up the chop top so my thoughts are with them for the late nights ahead of them for reassembly....I wish I could have done more but time just beat me in this instance.
Got the front guards done tonight (pic is a little blurry):
Rear guards didn't really need any attention at this stage as they were pretty nice off the gun. I may do them though when I redo the roof and bonnet.
So that's it for me for now - I'm sure Pete will throw up some pics of the chop top reassembled and at the show!

Couple pic's to show everyone the new look . Looks real streetable now .
Rod is over the moon with new image of car but we still have lots more to do at a latter date .(detail wheels, get back to race ready ,new tyres ,finish polishing paint , ect )
Thanks Allan for your fine work dude ! Allan has abit more to do yet but this car has reach a new level !(had to brighten up the night shoots )

Dasdubber ·
Looks good Pete - great effort to get it all back together which such little time. Once again sorry I couldn't get the roof/bonnet/guards finished to the same standard as the sides due to time constraints. I'll get them all sorted along with the decklid soon.
Al
Dasdubber ·
Now that I've copped enough flack for having my now-famous "right nut" posted on the net for all to see...back to work!
Rod wanted the decklid licence light filled so a filler piece was cut from flat steel and hammered into rough shape - it is sitting in place in this pic before welding.
Will need a bit of filler for shaping so there was no need to grind the welds right down flush (pretty close though).
Also got the Dzus fasteners into the top of the decklid. Will need to extend the lower edge of the lid (both the radiused lower part of the decklid itself as well as the "apron" which is attached to the lid for easy removal etc.
Hopefully more updates during the week.

Hey Al,
Has this become a full time gig now or are you still contracting back to the new owners of your old business?

Still only part time mate - I have to work until the end of June for the new owners of my old business then I'm full time after that (well maybe after a week or two off once our new bub arrives end of June). My wife is pretty tolerant of my vw antics but I wouldn't be popular leaving her alone for the first week after birth!

Probably earlier than that,

11CAB wrote:Hey Mat, that wasnt the car at Action Day in about 1994 that had the rego plate WEJ11 or something similar to wedgy?
That might have been the Chop top that Laurie Gooley owned. The car Reuben in NT now owns. Not 100% sure but that was around about that time.
555bug ·
i did not realize this was your old drag car Matt 🙂 was in your shed next to Charlotte when I saw it last. Do you have any old video or any more pictures?
matberry ·
Graham [IIcab] no it was never actually regoed. Driven around at various times around 91 , 92, then I got it,and she hung around the shop for a few years, until she went together as Dave said racing '94-'97
Stephen, of coarse I have more photos and stuff, just takes to long for me to convert to digital🤓

nice, I think I have some shots of it from hot fours 🙂 I'll dig them out if I can

Stanley ·
nice Mat...that is satin black isn't it?
matberry ·
Officially its GMH Flat Black, but when you do a quality panel prep, it comes out more semi gloss.
We used to clean it with normal car wash but with some kero added to keep the finish consistent[oily fingures and the like show up terribly]
Stanley ·
thanks Mat...my notch is GMH black and new toy will be the same although i'm tempted to put a clear over it to stop the oily fingers which you inevitably get at the track
reub ·
Always loved this car 👍 drool.... Gotta love chop tops.
Is especially funny seeing a 6'3 bloke like me get out of a standard beetle, let alone a chop top😂
Dasdubber ·
Bit more work on decklid today - bottom edge which was previously cut to clear header was lopped off:
Then a donor decklid bottom was chopped and tacked in place (incidentally this isection is from the original decklid of the car when in Matt's possession [so I'm told])...so at least part of it will stay with the chop top!
Tacked in place with a couple pie cuts to try and get the shape close (as the profile is different for the w-decklid on there currently and the later donor lid). Bit more grinding to go then some filler to smooth it all out. When the chop top comes back to my shop I'll finish the bottom edge of the apron....then it will be painted.
Stanley ·
Al this is great....I have just got my decklid back from the paint strippers and will be doing it and my rear apron over the weekend.
Keep up the great work....not to state the obvious...🤪

The chop top is back in the shop so I can finalise colour sanding and finish the decklid. Started on the roof today:
Hmmmm....whose type IV powered, porsche brake equipped weapon of a beetle could that be in the reflection of Rod's door?

I'm sure I'll have a chance to plaster my own drag car with my business name at some stage 🙂
Dasdubber ·
Roof is all done.
Front guards recut and buffed.
Masking tape is to A) protect edges, and B) stop compound from getting into the edges of guard beading, window rubbers etc etc!
More work on the weekend coming...should have it all done and dusted by Wintersun next weekend (chop top will be on display at the classic car auction on sunday [not for sale of course!]).

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
VW Beetle... one of the hardest cars to buff. Lots of flowing curves all leading into each other. Buff burns are easy to come by if you're not carefull.
I learnt to buff using a machine on a beetle. Uncle had an old one sitting there for parts so i asked if I could learn on it. got the hang of it with only a few buff burns to start with. Best thing about practising on an old parts wreck cause it didn't matter about the damage but learned all the lessons I needed to to master the use of a buff.
chillax ·
Fantastic work Al!
Look forward to seeing this one 😀

Back onto the decklid tonight - first trial fit before cutting out templates for the filler piece...
Bottom edge was left long so I could put a gentle fold in it (tomorrow night hopefully) - will have a cut out in the centre for the header flange.
Was clamped from the inside, plug welded to decklid and but welded elsewhere (just spot welded in pics - will finish welding tomorrow night)
Ran out of time tonight - will hopefully have it done tomorrow night. Rod and Pete will come down to fab up the dzus fastener brackets on the guards....by the way Pete, I decided it was much quicker to work with what was there rather than fabbing up a whole new rear apron skin. We can fill the dzus holes if they have to be moved around.

Good luck mate. Hope it all goes to plan.
Dasdubber ·
More pics for you Brennden 🙂
Last night I hand formed (ie beat it to shape) the lower edge of the apron - much neater than a sharp cut edge (but about 5 hours slower though)...hehehe
The header flange fits nicely in the cutout (with radiused edge as well)....heaps of room for a bigger header if a larger engine ever finds it way into the chop top!
Some filler work to fine tune the shape - a lot of this will be sanded off tomorrow before primer/paint.
Rod and Pete were at the workshop today to finalise the dzus fasteners on the lower edges of the apron including brackets on the guards to hold it all in place.
Since I ran out of time to colour sand the rear guards before the hot rod show, I got started on them tonight - will hopefully buff it all back to a glossy finish tomorrow.
DAS Resto Haus will be officially open for business in July (up until then I am still only there part time) - you can see I still have a fair bit to set up which is hard with limited time and dwindling funds! It will all come together with time.
Since my T4 decided to let me down on the way to work monday morning (in the rain of course), the oval is back to daily driver status (yes it marks its spot wherever it goes!)....should be ready and raring for DYNOMANIA!!!

Sensational 👍
We can see the heart you put into your work Alan....
Dasdubber ·
Got the rear guards colour sanded today to match the rest of the car...tried to stay out of the pics but these curvy guards are hard to stay out of the reflection;
Made sure there were no random 'nut' shots today 😉
Was hoping to have the decklid in paint by the end of today but had a set back. Despite prepping the existing black paint and laying down a sealer it reacted badly (no idea what paint was on there Pete/Rod - it was terrible to sand as it was so soft and went gummy with solvent....had to use the angle grinder with wire brush wheel to remove all the paint as it clogged everything else I tried). Anyway, the filler worked areas were primed as per this pic, then minor spots filled after taking it back to metal....and after this pic it was reprimed. hopefully after work tomorrow night I should get it into paint after giving it a quick light sand.
forgot to take a pic of it fully primed.

After work tonight I gave the high build primer a rub down with 3M dry guide coat. Cleaned it up and shot the black base coat and 3 coats of clear. Pic is pretty crappy but you get the idea. I'll take a few more tomorrow.
The head 'bash plate' was previously in plain aluminium - Rod wanted a lick of paint on it so it was painted the same colour as the dash insert/roll cage etc.
Hopefully tomorrow will see a final light buff of the entire body, a thorough clean and colour sand the decklid. Then off to Wintersun on sunday (hopefully not raining!)

Great to hear you are pleased Rod. Owner's reactions are always hard to decipher as some people are outwardly stoked and others quite reserved - I do my best to keep people happy where I can so it is good to get some feedback (good or bad).
From the outset of the 'resto' the brief was never to make it perfect as ultimately it is a racecar....so this was not a $20K plus paintjob - there are things which are not perfect and areas which could be improved , but I had to stop somewhere or else the bill would have blown out of proportion!
Anyway, as you mention Rod, can't wait to see it hit the track again!
