Well this girl has been in the works since 1995. I am owner number 3 and have the great job of finishing her off. I've had it since oct 07 and have enjoyed my time this far.
I hope you enjoy the picks, this will put me where im upto. I still have big plans on finishing off.
Now keep in mind the first set of shots are not digital, yes they are standard film!! i know, hard to believe, but this was started in 95'!
Looking very nice,But im not sure whats going on in photo no16 looks like someone is p***ing on your car cheers shane.
Mick058 ·
Ha!
yep, don't know that bloke but he looks like he may be over excited about the paint job!
Mick058 ·
Mick058 ·
Mick058 ·

sensational!
mate - wouldnt suprise me if mine took +13yrs too...... maybe i should aim for warwick 2020 lol
nick
Mick058 ·
Cheers Nick, i wish i could say it was all me, but im owner 3 to finish it! Got some goodies coming though!
More pics to come
Mick058 ·
Carbies (dual weber 44idf's SPAIN MADE!!!) are here and ready to be bolted on. Can't wait to heat her purr, though not sure if its gonna have enough go for me.
Mick058 ·
These are 8inch on the rear, not sure if there legal yet???
Craig Torrens ·
had a look at this car today..................VERY NICE !
Mick058 ·
Thanks Craig, cheers again for your info!
Mick058 ·
Wiring this beast has been good fun. Its a mix between a 68 and 71 model wiring diagram, but using a 58 wiring loom!! Good fun indeed. So far so good. Once my headlights get here i shall see the efforts in action. I've never been so excited by tail lights before once i got a battery in to test and check voltages!!!
Mick058 ·
VWCOOL ·
Noice! What's with the holes in the forward part of the sills - is that to 'get at' the large pan retaining bolts?
fullnoise ·
Looks very nice.
I like the angle on the of the shot on your message icon.
Full rebuilds are a hell of a lot of work. But that is how you do it properly.
Will we see a debut at the BugIn?
CT
Mick058 ·
Cheers CT, BugIn...i wish, i read through Dasdubbers thread the other day to get some info on the cup 3 wheels, and his build started in may/june and he'd hoped to get it finished by christmas!
I'm trying not to be to optimistic otherwise i may get impatient. These things snowballs, and the pocket runs short.
Just ordered some 911 lights for this puppy and some S/S bumpers. It all hits the pocket!
I must say i do love the icon shot, looks phat!
fullnoise ·
Your pan looks just like mine:
Konis on the front
KYBs on the back
Polished Fuchs
1916
44IDF
IRS
Front disks
T3 Rear drums
Whiteline bars
And I've got photos to prove it!
Gee, next you'll be telling me you have some spare cookie cutter wheels with race tyres!
Those are all tried and true items.
CT
Mick058 ·
Ha! yep. Hey CT, i did have some cookie cutters!! no slicks though...sold them about 2mnths ago, they were my spares 🙄
I don't think ill get a 14s run out of my 1916 though. My day though, once the money catches up.
Mick058 ·
Well just a bit of an update, took her for an outing to get a few things done
Mick058 ·
It was time to get the front end dropped, so i got the beam narrowed 2inches and got two new adjusters installed. Supposedly only having one adjuster is illegal? Let alone the stiffer ride which im not really after.
To really get the suspension feeling right i got some dropped spindles installed (the chrome spindles i had are in the for sale section). The car looks good dropped, but its mayeb too low. Theres no engine in the back at the moment so it may pop up a little once i get it back in.
Mick058 ·
I also got two new front callipers and a new master cyclinder installed. My advice is do not leave your brake system sitting around empty for too long. The rubbers in the M/C had eaten away and wouldn't hold prime.
I am curious though as to brake upgrades people have done and if the larger you go the quicker it locks up. I undertand there is a relationship between brake fade and temp and so on, but if you go bigger, do the front wheels lock up easier. (Depending on foot pressure etc)
bond ·
mick.
firstly - there is no such thing as too low.
secondly - that colour looks awesome!
keep the pics coming.
nick
Dasdubber ·
Nice one Mick - looks great....as nick says, more pics please! 🙂
Al
Mick058 ·
Nick, i agree, too low shouldn't register, but i will eat my own words. I'm the guy that laughs quietly when the lowered MR2 or skyline scratches itself over the various speed humps through Mcdonalds (i know, i shouldn't be at Mcdonalds in the first place).
Looks good low, but worried of how practical it will be.
On that note, does anybody run any aftermarket shocks for lowered front ends? not much travel left in my koni's at the moment.
Recommend brand or type?
Mick058 ·
More pics.
I got some seat belts in, quite easy when you have semi-phore slots to use.
Mick058 ·
The way you do it is by using a plate and slidding it up the semi-phore slot. If you tack weld on some weld wire you can use it to slide the tapped plate up and down to get your bolt through.
in the first photo you can see where the bolt is coming through. In the last photo you can see the weld wire used to position the plate.
Remeber though, roof lining still needs to go in, so don't break off the weld wire until the pillar upholstery is in.
Mick058 ·
One of the next things i want to do is get the roof lining and pillar upholstery in. Does anyone have photos of their installation of roof and pillar upholstery? I want to custom make it using some foam on the roof but i need to know how all the bits go.
Would appreciate it if people could post photos of their roofs, even better if they have the same shape shell as mine.
If anyone had used foam on the roof aswell and had photos, that'll be tops. Nothing worse then getting it wrong and starting again, let alone the wasted material.
Mick058 ·
Any luck with roof photos guys? Need to work out which bits overlap etc. Im sure people have upoholstery on their beetles!
Anyways, the engines out and has gone roadtripping to an engine builder in Coffs (hint hint). Hopefully i will be able to fire her up in the next month or so.
I got lucky actually cause my mates brother was down from Coffs on the weekend, just in time to take it up for me (with some petrol money). He drives a corolla, so we shoved it in the back seat! Love the vw engines, they fit anywhere. Another way is to pull out your passenger seat in your beetle and it will fit right next to you. Not the safest but hey, depends how desperate you are.
Mick058 ·
i also brazed on a larger fitting to the bottom of my fuel tank to increase my fuel pump flow rate. I will mount the pump under the fuel tank on some rubber mounts that way it wont vibrate through the car.
I also ordered a relay for the fuel pump. The way it works is that when you turn the car on the pump runs on a set timer (internal on the relay) and then stops. After that it runs only off your tacho, so the idea is that the pump only runs when the engine is running, otherwise if you crash and your accessories are still on, the pump will continue to pump fuel into the engine bay, so if theres a fire you're in trouble.
Should hopefully be easy enough to wire-up.
Mick058 ·
Had some time on the weekend to get things done.
First up is the set of stainless steel bumpers i bought. Now, i must say im not 100% happy with them but i think they pass at doing the job. The over-riders that came with them are also pressed steel not s/s. Im not sure how long the chroming on the over-riders will last. I also tried to fit my original over-riders on and they are too big for the bumpers, so i think the shape is a little smaller than the original.
In saying all that, they look good and are s/s, so i guess im happy enough.
Mick058 ·
i got the bits to go with powder-coated, as well as my seat brackets. You can see the top of the seat brackets so i thought i'd get them done. My prep work wasn't 100% but it really didn't need to be.
Mick058 ·
i did a mock up fit of the bumpers and the blinkers. I must say i hate blinkers, they destroy the look of these cars.
Mick058 ·
i p;layed around some more with the blinker bracket so that i could really hide it as much as possible. Pretty happy with it in the end. I had to modify the bracket insert bits to fit the bracket it and out of the way.
Pumba ·
Looking very nice,Can you get through rego with just the blinkers on the pillars??? What are your plans with the original over riders if you are looking at selling them let me know im looking for a set cheers shane.
Mick058 ·
hey Shane, i may have a few over-riders left. i sold some already. How many you after?
THey tell me the pillar blinkers aren't legal any more, unless the car is original i believe. Some idea as seat belts. Sucks really.
Pumba ·
Im after front and back, but will look at what you got,I got my 58 past with only pillar blinkers but that was QLD i havent tryed NSW, they will be harder i guess cheers shane.
Mick058 ·
Started work on the upholestry. Im going for velour headliner with no seams. Used some foam to flaten out the roof and to add some cushioning and sound deadening. Its a tops products, there's to sides to the foam and it really flattens and smooths the finish.
Mick058 ·
And then the finished result. Looks so well curved
Mick058 ·
Going to use the same idea but thinner foam for the rear quarter panels and back window.
Decided we weren't going to use the original upholestry tabs and will use a pinch weld instead. Should be interesting when its done, at least different to original. We're kind of making it up as we go, but so far so good.
Mick058 ·
Removing the tab section.
Mick058 ·
Also have some country buggy front end supports.
Do many people run these?
Pumba ·
Mate your doing a great job on that roof lining,I might have to get you to do mine after i have painted it😀 cheers shane.
Mick058 ·
A bit of an update, done lots lately and will post pics as i get and download them. THe pic below is a sneak preview and will be as much as i show of the interior for now. I'm aiming to get everything done by the VW Nats and don't want to spoil the surprise. The edging and gear boot are all in 'oyster' leather, looks the goods! The photo was taken with flash so its a little bright.
Enjoy
Pumba ·
Carpet looks awsome, still waiting for photos of your roof linning???? did you get my pm in regards to your over riders you said you might have cheers shane.
Mick058 ·
now, didn't get the pm regarding those, try emailing if you like.
ill put some roof lining photos up soon
Mick058 ·
A bit of a lazy update. Took a photo of the front seat before i installed it. Looks good in the car.
Mick058 ·
Also some from Nats...front end needs to be lowered (these photos are from my camera phone BTW, not the best...
Mick058 ·
Mick058 ·
Not completely happy with it yet, though i guess thats what makes it fun.
Mick058 ·
You may enjoy these photos. I cut these in for easy access to carbie adjustments. I'll need to make a cover panel to stop stuff shooting in but i reacken it will save me huge amounts of hassles when the pilots block up.
I was inspired by CT's effort.
pete wood ·
the austrian superbug rally cars used to have their dry sump oil tanks mounted in exactly the location of those holes. Imagine that! 😵 Not my choice but there you go.
I trust that car is going to get driven properly. 🤘
BTW, try clark rubber. they have rubber bungs in all sorts of sizes.
Mick058 ·
Installed a 'Craig Torrens Special' kafer bar on the weekend. Looks tops, yet to really belt it to see how it goes, though initial tests are good.
Finally got enough k's on the Pobjoy to do a service and start thrashing it around. Still needs some fine tuning on the carbies, but so far, i'm enjoying it very much (grin on my face says it all).
I'll try and get some footage once i get round to it, and once it gets a little warmer and dryer.
Dilbert ·
You own one hell of a nice car. I am very jealous.
Mick058 ·
Thanks for the comments Dilbert, she's getting there.
vw54 ·
nice tortoise shell
Mick058 ·
He's like a little tiger, has the best stripes, especially on his belly.
Mick058 ·
Finally took some interior shots - hope you like...At least its different!
Mick058 ·
trickysimon ·
One of the sweetest beetles I've ever seen! 👍
Simon
Mick058 ·
Thanks Simon! I got some 'arty' photos of her aswell, will put them up in the next day or so.
trickysimon ·
Is it just me or are the windscreen wipers on the opposite way to mine?
Simon
Mick058 ·
yep, they are. Need to work it out??? Maybe i can wire the motor to run the opposite way. Some are my way, some are yours. Usually its easy to make motors run in both directions.
I was over wiring (wired the whole car) so just left it for now - wanted to hoon for a bit!
bond ·
mate. if you've got any pics good pics of the whole car post em too for a squiz. the avatar looks sick.
nick
Mick058 ·
ill get some more up soon.
Mick058 ·
You can see my rodeo in the door reflection on the second photo! I'm happy with it but would like to put a chrome strip down the sides and a chrome strip on the side steps, just to get a little more colour. Been fun hooning in the Pobjoy though!
063bug ·
Awesome car, well done
Mick058 ·
Cheers Alan...
Some more 'arty' photos.
Mick058 ·
And a few more...
Mick058 ·
so i got a little carried away.....
Dasdubber ·
Nice one Mick - your beetle looks fantastic! It was great to meet you at the nats and have a drool over your car.
Al
westi ·
nice ride.
i like the colour choice ,very clean well presented car.
congrates on a job well done.
bond ·
mick - maybe try just the chrome strip on the running boards before you go poking holes in your doors.
dude, she looks sensational. those 8" fuchs look fat too. glad you didnt change them?! they are awesome!
nick
bond ·
mick - just had another look at that interior. congratulations on a really nice package! the whole car works - you have done exceptionally well. definately deserve it after a 10yr haul!!!
how'd that glovebox come in handy? hehe
nick

Yes same, cheers Al - will keep you posted bout the next project.
ps, i still can't get over the rag top you built - every time i see Craig i always drool over it (the car Craig!) - love the ideas you put into it.
Mick058 ·
westi wrote:nice ride.

Cheers Westi - i often drive past your workshop, will need to drop in and say good-ay one day. Look forward to seeing the Junka in action - hoping to get to warwick - not sure if the car will come with me though.
Mick058 ·
Nick - yeh im happy i kept the 8's, the look phat and suit the classic look of the car.
RE: the glovebox, i still haven't put it in yet!!! ssshhh, don't tell anyone!
badkarmann ·
well done mate she looks great
Mick058 ·
Thought i'd keep any updates to the car on this page, that way i have a good vehicle history and record of everything i've done. Apologies if this bores you.
Bought some new rear end suspension gear from CVD. Has anyone run these before?
Buggy Brad, do you know what type of gas struts they actually use?
The rear end will probably stiffen up a fair bit, so will be interesting to see how it all goes.
Mick058 ·
i'm also trying to source a narrowed front end sway bar (STILL!!). I think i will get this from vintage.
I haven't really pushed the car round much so it will be hard to compare the difference in handling with the front and rear sway bars.
old bugger ·
mate that is one lovely yet tough vw. the 58's are one of the best
Brad ·

Struts as you call them, shocks as I call them will be Monroe HD units
Joel ·
nice work mick that is one tight bug
the reason ur wipers dont seem right is those are 12volt bug wiper arms
all the big window 6volt 58-67 bugs had wipers that parked on the right hand side and had thin tinny wiper arms with non replaceable rubbers
the 68 on 12volt bugs had heaps heavier arms with replaceable style rubbers that parked on the left
it didnt matter whether the car was RHD or LHD all the bodies were the same
originally yours woulda been like this
AUSSIE_MICK ·
Hi im new to this site and your car is FANTASTIC. I would love a set of those wheels for my oval, where could i get a set?
ian.mezz ·
AUSSIE_MICK wrote:Hi im new to this site and your car is FANTASTIC. I would love a set of those wheels for my oval, where could i get a set?
The rear wheels are aftermarket Fuchs, while the front are genuine.
There a Porsche style wheel.
vwsteve ·
Hey mick 58, i put a set of coil shocks in the back of my ragtop many years ago and it worked a treat, i run a type 4 in the rear and everytime i took off the rear just crouched right down but the coils stiffened it right up and made the front actually lift more when taking off, mine were a really fat type of shock and coil i havent seen anywhere before but you should get the same result, the extra weight of the type 4 may make mine smoother that a lighter type 1 but i never considered the ride too bumpy for me, hopefully it wont be for yours, nice car!
Mick058 ·
RExy, i got them mainly for the inch extra in ride height, as my car was way low after settling (back wheel was about an inch on the guard). I put them in on the weekend and OOOOO man, i fell in love with my car all over again.
I can't believe how big a difference getting the car off the ground makes. SO much more driveable. The rear wheels are about an inch from the guard now instead of an inch in the guard - i think this may settle a little bit, which will leave the car at a really good height - a balance of look and comfort - but man, what a difference.
Mick058 ·
back right side of the car
AUSSIE_MICK ·
Hi micko58
Thanks for the info, i have 15"s and 16"s Fuchs that had been chrome plated many years ago the chrome is peeling so its time to update!
will have to start shopping
Thanks
Mick058 ·
No probs mate
Mick058 ·
its always a joy to get under the car at the moment - everything is so new and clean. its easy to forget how much work went into the pan. One day it probably wont look like this...
Mick058 ·
Now can someone tell me about my rear setup?
I think there are a few type 3 bits there??? i know their type 3 drums, but what about the rest???
hellbugged ·
where are you bumpstops?............
yeah either semi auto "twin plate" spring plates there or maybe type three (both same)
Mick058 ·
(bumpstops) heehee - got too excited trimming them down, i need to get some new ones.
Do twin plates do any good?
VWFREAK ·
Sweet ride, slow and steady wins the race
hellbugged ·
Mick058 wrote:(bumpstops) heehee - got too excited trimming them down, i need to get some new ones.

yeah bit stiffer, goodera for racing or offroad
Mick058 ·
quite a lot of tricks under the shell - just not sure what they all are - i have those country buggy beam supports on the front end aswell.
Mick058 ·
Finally got the tinware in - not too pretty, not 100% sealed, but its in.
Has anyone out there got a modified tinware piece installed within a 36hp engine bay? i'd love to see it and know where you trimmed it!
Anyways, here it is...
Mick058 ·
I've also decided to go for the 'open boot lid' look. A section of tinware from the right side above the gearbox has been removed to let more air in - the hot air to exit via the open boot lid.
Mick058 ·
And then some random shots - i assume people like photos???
vwsteve ·
make sure no-one picks that up with the kerbside clean up, they would score well🙂
sits nice and looks good from the rear mate, i had to cut heaps off the rear tinware of my 60 kg, its chrome as well so had to make sure i didnt damage it too much with the tin snips, i also had to modify heaps on my split ute, i went the otherway on that 1 and cut and bent the round area down, big job that too
Mick058 ·
yeh its a pain in the butt job - snip and trail, snip and trial - tedious. You'd need to trim it, fit it, then powdercoat/chrome to make it look good.
pete wood ·
now how about some circlework shots eh? I assume you know how to DRIVE it? Or maybe I need to show you...🤘
Mick058 ·
just trying to remain within the laws of the land 😎
REally holding out for it - can't wait to really push her round, and push myself too - Aim is wakefield really - before then if im lucky, but slow on getting my cams organised. Still want to get my front sway bar in too.
pete wood ·
Mick058 wrote:just trying to remain within the laws of the land 😎
yeah, sure....
werl, I've got a way to bust you out of your, "I'm behaving myself" sooky talk, there's a come and try motorkhana at eastern ck next saturday (14th). come along and have a go.
don't worry about your front sway bar, just come and race. you don't need a helmet or racing license.
555bug ·
looks great, it's a credit to you 🙂
Mick058 ·
Thanks 555bug - shes a joy to drive after upping the rear end.
Pete - are you going along? Do they do it on the half track? Cost? Time? Do you run on your own (lap time)?
AUSSIE_MICK ·
Hi micko58
Are your front wheels 15's or 16's
My car is allmost complete except for electics and interior will have to post up some pics soon, this things been sitting in my garage for 14 years.
Thanks
Mick058 ·
hey mate - their 16s - do you need a motor 😀
AUSSIE_MICK ·
Hi Mick
Thanks for the info and no i dont need a motor allready have an early pobjoy motor.
Why are you selling?
Mick
57 oval ·
Top looking car, you arent taking out that Pobjoy to fit some alien engine I hope?
Mate you have done a brilliant job of that car it is a credit to you.
RJ
Mick058 ·
thanks on the comments lads.
engine wise, we'll see 😁
StenGuns ·
Hey Mick.. What are those external mirrors off?
Your car looks the business mate.. Well done..
Mick058 ·
there those vitori (can't remember exact name, something like that) mirrors - pretty sure VVD sell them

how's your evil plan going Mick?

great guns once i sell the engine - should make for a good build thread.

eeww, i'm gonna be sick. save that weird stuff for those other sites you go on!

Me sadder I don't have money to buy his current engine😢😢😢
BeetleJuice ·
I just can't believe your going to cut up that beautiful beetle!🙁
It seems to me you only have a base 1916.....Why not just do the Full Steroids with warranty?
Have you been for a spin with Craig Torrens's 138HP Steroid powered bug?
I know it's your car and you can do what you want with it , but have you thought about resale?
Good luck with what ever you do!
CP
hellbugged ·
oh dear Craig P..........Warwick 09 is coming and you need to be there too!!!!!!?????
Mick, don't forget to budget for gearbox'S 😉
Mick058 ·
i don't trust Craig T's driving enough to step into his 138hp Steriod, scared me enough in the base with a swing axle gearbox and no front sway bar...
i have thought about the 'cutting' it is a little evil - it will be kept to a minimum BUT it is a 58 shell on a 68 auto pan with complete custom interior - there isn't much original about it - saying that, i'd love a stocker oval down the track
rose ·
Doooonnnn't do it just get a super and cut it up and save the 58.🙅🙅
ps. if you do use the really thin cutting wheel for the grinder.🤪🤪
Craig Torrens wrote:make sure you buy plenty of grinder wheels mick.......lots of metal to cut 😂

i've already got fibreglass guards - she's a mongrel.
i promise ill keep the cutting to a minimum - i wouldn't like to hear her cry.

How about 'Transformed'

reub ·
Look forward seeing how it all goes for you...
...as to whether you should or shouldn't - only you can make the call. I came really close to putting a subie in my 58. Glad in lots of ways I didn't cut it up for a subie, but the 1916 with twin webbers isn't my idea of a daily driver, so now I've two toys parked and a shitty AU falcon ute daily driver....
Mick058 ·
i'd still love an original - a real purist doesn't put in a 1916 right! Though i guess you shouldn't need to cut for it either.
If i'm going to spend the money and do a good proper conversion, i'd want to do it in a car thats the full package - a car i can like all round. Chopping up a crappy later model and spending the money on a good conversion seems a little pointless - good for fun, but a little bit of a waste in my eyes.
I plan for this to be long term - something i hold on to for as long as i can. A really good gearbox will be next (ill need it) - then after that, hopefully some big fat brakes!
Watch this space - as soon as the Pobjoy goes its all going ahead - ill make sure i take plenty of photos.
Mick058 ·
Alright, Pobjoy has sold so its full steam ahead.
First of all - sorry to all the purists - i too thought it would be evil to cut up the 58, but i blame a few forum members for changing my mindset - i couldn't justify buying a crappy beetle to put a good conversion in, so i'm going to use the 58.
Now rest assured, my grubby hands will not cut this beast - i will be using the services of Westside mufflers to do pretty much the whole conversion - i don't have a garage at the moment (auction this Saturday, so i might have a house soon!) so i can't really do much if any of the work - possibly a good thing.
Now i need advice!
Pro's and Con's of which WRX engine to use - which year? Goods and bads of models - Where is a good place to get a half cut - seems there are few available at the moment.
Westi will custom make the radiator - what about running the water lines? Best in the car or under.
Should we move the gearbox forward 2 inches or not? Will there be weight transfer issues if we don't? Will the CV's be on to crap an angle if we do?
Any other suggestions would be great.
Should make for some good photos of a build up.
Please dont hate me 🙄
pete wood ·
filthy jap engine loving prevert!!! 😂
we used to have this guy on here called "jakjones". he'd have your guts for garters! but then he was a bit of a redneck 😬
but seriously. if you really want to do it, why not I guess. buy a front cut with the lowest km late model motor you can find (within reason). better to find one that's stock too at this stage I reckon. listen to other people who have said "build a proper gearbox now" preferably with a quaife LSD. it won't be cheap, but it will be worth it. do it once and do it properly. i reckon move the trans forward if you can too.
psimitar ·
Mate, this probably a dumb question but is that Blue a VW blue or is it custom?
Ta
Mick058 ·
hey mate, its actually a green and its not a vw colour. It changes a little in different lights - its metallic
cheers.
Brad ·
Pro's and Con's of which WRX engine to use - which year? Goods and bads of models - Where is a good place to get a half cut - seems there are few available at the moment.
94 on, later the better. Buy a half cut complete only.
Westi will custom make the radiator - what about running the water lines? Best in the car or under.
In your setup, under the car. I am going through the heater channel but that is a PITA.
Should we move the gearbox forward 2 inches or not? Will there be weight transfer issues if we don't? Will the CV's be on to crap an angle if we do?
If you don't then the EJ20T will not fit under your deck lid. CV angles will be fine this is a street car you don't have bugger all wheel travel.
Any other suggestions would be great.
Shorten the sump as much as possible, buy a crankykit, get Al to do your loom, cut out as much as possible up front, it is all going to get cut anyway and if you cut it out up front you can skin the engine bay and make it nice and neat. Build a box as a stock one will not last .
Keep type 1 CV's then are a nice break point, run front and rear gearbox straps with a kafer bar, no need for engine mounts.
Have fun it is only metal.
pete wood ·
no engine mounts brad? I thought you said the horns would break without them.
Mick058 ·
i think Westi was keen on engine mounts. At least if i go that way i can sell off the current kafer bar too - not that its equal in cost. I think the engineer is keen on the idea of engine mounts, even if you don't really need them. Keep the discussions coming.
Found a MY05 WRX Ej20T - 17,000ks on it, jap import so no anti theft. Comes with complete loom, ECU, all sensors etc. The guy had a half cut and sold it without engine.

no engine mounts needed, just bolts up like the beetle motor only useing 4 bolts no prob.
If you use a 3inch exhaust from the turbo the kafer bars get in the way.

pete wood wrote:no engine mounts brad? I thought you said the horns would break without them.
Yes and No.
In an off-road car where the chance of jumping and big vertical movements I would either run an engine mount or support the forks well. Also you have a rear engine cage so support can be gained once you tie it in to the roll cage and shock mounts. The Geko for example does not have engine mounts but it does have twin transmission straps and the forks supported and braces to the tray and roll cage. My Iguana on the other hand will use both Subaru Mounts and still support the forks and tie into the rollcage, but it will have a lot more HP than most VW’s out there.
The Kafer bar does just this as it ties the forks into the shock towers in a V or triangle shape with gives it the support it needs.
The EJ engine mounts are not far behind the bell housing / rear fork mounts so there is little to be gained from picking them up without substantial triangulation anyway, which as pointed out gets in the way of a lot of things. That being said if I had to pick between a support bar and changing an exhaust I would do an exhaust.
I doubt very much that you can get a good engine support system that picks up the subie mounts that does anything more than the kafer bar setup, especially if it is a 5 Bar setup. That is unless you are going to cut out major sheet metal and build a cage. There simply isn’t bugger all to tie it into.
Would I run a subie engine without a kafer bar or triangulated system from the shock towers, no, but I see plenty of people who do without issue.
Turbo54 ·
There is a place here in SA called S&J Automotive that have built some of the fastest rally wrx's in this country. They are really nice people and you should be able to just call them up and have a chat. A friend has a stock internal wrx running 215kw on all fours. It is really quick but you will need a box to hold it all together. Good luck with it all. I dont know why you just didn't boost the pobjoy?

Thanks for the plug re the Kafer Bar !😎

i say get a steroid plus.....
Mick058 ·
budget? What are they?
i think my torsion bars are already done, plus i've got the coil overs from CVD on the rear.
Look, the pobjoy was great and good fun, but i always liked the idea of a wrx conversion. plus, its 200hp and if it blows up, an engine will cost me 2k worst case - its quieter and EFI. VW engines are just too expensive in my mind.
Pobjoy will be out today so we can see what kind of room we've got to work with.

Steve, i like my car and a lot of effort has gone into it. Nothing against Pauls, its part of the reason im converting, i loved it.

HAs anyone got suggestions re an aftermarket computer - it would be to suit an MY05 Ej20T - how much? Has anyone ever made up a loom using the stock ECU?
ian.mezz ·
Ratbug, josh and I did our own looms. I would just use the stock computer to start with, ours are stock . No plans on changing them.

Talk to Al - http://amauto.com.au/ he is the man and if he tells you a Stock ECU will work he will be able to provide you with a loom to make it happen.
Be very careful of people telling you stock will work unless then either know a lot about Subi's or have one of the same model.
The later the model engine the more crap in the loom and ECU that will make your life hard. For example I could do a pre 97 in my sleep but later than that is a PITA. After 2001 it gets even worse. Anything after 97 I just send to Al as it is well worth the few hundred he charges to send you back a simple install.
In the Iguana which has an 07 EJ25T I am using M800 motec. Main reason is that I can and it works with the SDL and tune I want. Also as I am using fly by wire and variable cam timing I needto ensure I can get it tuned properly outside of the ssubaru environment.
There are a lot of ECU's availible if you decide to go aftermarket I would suggest finding the dyno guy you like and seeing what he is happy to use / do / sell. If you can get it all in the same place it reduces the chances of people making up excuses why it cost so much.
I went Motec cause the state rep is a good guy and has a Dyno to do the tune for me. No one has ever had a bad word to say about Motec apart from the cost, but you get what you pay for and I want an ECU that can run under water.
Mick058 ·
And so it begins...
Craig S ·
You'd better start competing in some events if you're going to put that engine in the back of the 58.🙂
Mick058 ·
might have to save for the gearbox first - and brakes!
pete wood ·
mmm, there are a few bits missing off that. and I'd fill all those open intake lines up with rags before anything gets in and wrecks the motor.
Craig S ·
one more dumb question for you:
how hard will it be (or how expensive will it be) to get insurance for a conversion like this??
Mick058 ·
will find that out Gwendoyln.
Yes i know its not all on there Pete. Seems to be the case alot that bits are sold off as soon as half cuts get in - its almost instant. There ain't many latter models one around either - or early stuff due to the 10 year rule.
I'd appreciate a list of bits missing. The wrecker seemed helpful with 'bits'.

shannon do insurance for mine under extremely modified🤪🤪 or something like that. 🤪
Mick058 ·
Shannon were very good on the pobjoy and also on my 12a - i didn't think there'd be an issue. someone will insure you.
List the bits missing that ill need. that way i can start a list.
i've got the turbo and the air box sensor. Another sensor/regulator for the fuel pump i believe.
What else?
1303Steve ·
Hi
Shannons are cool with any mod as long as it approved, it just moves you up the scale a bit.
I was at Brads today and gave him the phone number for the wire guy in Qld.
Do you have the key and barrel? You will need it I think.
You will also need the fuel pump controller, it varies the pump speed according load or boost.
I bought an Autronic SM4 plug & play ECU for my car, you can plug it in and it will run off the stock MAF & MAP sensor just like a stock ECU.
I figured I would need this ECU as I've changed so many things on the inlet and exhaust track.
Jak moved his transmission 50mm forwards and I don't think he's had any CV failures.
I ran steel tubes along the chassis following the heater channels bolts, these also help with cooling.

bullet proof trans? yep its already made - then i wake up.
Why a custom radiator? Why not, made to fit, looks the part. I believe its worth it. Last time i bought a second hand one, got it re-cord and it worked, but it wasn't as big a surface area and didn't look this good!

waiting on some bits before doing anymore.so you will have to wait daimo.
as for price for a radiator it depends on size.thicknes ,cores 1.2.3,how many passes you want, blah blah blah.but yes anyone can call me.97737244.
as for the cutting it will be done to a minimum.i have a dumby engine so that i can make small insitions at a time.don't want it to bleed to much.
i will be finishing of everything at the front before starting at the rear.intank surge system ,mount pump then fuel and radiator lines first.then the axe and shoe horn for the rest. should look pretty cool when done.it is a much nicer car in person, can't wait to cut it up.lol.just kidding micky.

Best to call Alan, he's really helpful and willing.

They're Cleco's holding the pipes on, used in aviation for holding two pieces of sheet metal together before riveting. But they are very handy for other uses also.

Brad the round section over near the middle of the tank is a surge pot that westi has added to tank instead of a seperate one
alot neater too but i dunno whats goin on with the EFI pump attached to the tank tho??
1303Steve ·
Hi
I was over at Westis shop the other day, the pump is mounted on the tank for tight packaging purposes, we all know as you add more things to a bug you run out of space.
I'm going to get Westi to do a similar thing to my tank, then I can do away with a lift pump and surge tank, KISS at its best.
I will also get him to fill in the bottom of the tank where the LHD hump is, should give me a few extra litres capacity.

westi wrote:yeh we havbe been doing this for ages, saves having extra lines and pumps.much neater.
Ok so you put a surge tank into the factory tank, that is fine I get that, but what is the go with the fuel pump ? Is it just mounted there and now you will run a feed line to the surge ?
I just though you might be doing something funky inside with lines or some special sort of pump.
Do you get any issues with hard mounting the pump like that ?
555bug ·
it would have to be rubber mounted, it lookls like a 044 and they are noisy 🙂 they can also get a bit hot and I'm guessing the radiator in front of it will not be helping. I mention this crap as this is the logic I've been working with and why I have not mounted my pumps on the firewall. Also on a tangent what size lines are you going to be running? I'm running AN-6 high pressure and AN-8 low, off on a tangent question, can I run a fuel cell legally? I hope so or I have one for sale lol
Stephen
westi ·
guys please take not most of the pic's are of things in the process of being built.nothing is set in concrete yet.
once the rubber is in place and the pump is actually mounted ,noise shouldn't be a problem, these pumps are quiet compared to edelbrock ,carter ,facetblah blah blah.
6 is a return size 8 for supply.6 each way is also fine.
as for the fuel cell all engineers have there own interpration of the rules.but no from my understanding unless it has an internal bladder.
as for the solid mounting of the pump ,never had a problem.you can run the intank. but i preffer a pump that is going to be siuted to any mods done in the future. i will post up some more stuff tonight.air ducting for the radiator is lokkin pretty cool.
anyone else got pic's of how they have ducted there air into the radiator.i would like to have an idea how everyone else does there's.you can never have to many idea's.

I've seen a guy use the little grills on the front guards to direct more air in - don't know how much it helped but i think he said it made a difference - i think it was posted here...

you may want to waste some time and see if you can match them up on here.
it has been a really long time since i ran them but i think they are off a fiat 124. the best thing is to call shermans.
typethreeking ·
yeah i have a sherman kit on my fastback and im pretty sure john said they are fiat brakes..
Mick058 ·
Sounds good - let me know what you come up with Joel - are people happy with the performance of them though???
Mick058 ·
Loom turned up, thanks Al - thought it was lost in aussie post there for a while - they've stuffed up to often for my liking - not fun!!!
Some pics
Mick058 ·
Comes with a page of plug and play instructions - the loom is about a quarter of the size of how i sent it up.
whatnow ·
i got my shermans brakes 2nd hand and one of the splines as worn so i had lots of trouble. they also overpowered the wide 5 kit i had on the front, because if the spline i took them off before i added a brake bias to fix them up.
Joel ·
Mick, i caught up with john today
i gave him a pic of ur brakes, he said they look like his but cant tell from the photo which calipers they are as he used a few different ones
he rattled off 2 DB numbers for brake pads but said give him a call but eitherway he can supply pads
just tell him u were talking to me about them, he'll know who u are then
but allow 30 mins as he loves a good yarn 😂
kept me there for ages talking subi conversions

Not yet guys, Westi has been busy with other stuff. I'll go pick up a front sway bar today but thats as exciting as it gets.
Really want to get it done before VW nationals, engineered, blue slip, registered etc - should get moving again this week. Will post some stuff as soon as i get it - hopefully Tuesday.

Got a second hand rear disc kit that has done around 3000k's. I believe its a Sherman kit and the calipers are a 'Fiat' type. Does anyone else run these? Do you know exactly which type of caliper they run and where you get new pads from???
Any help or experience with these would be much appreciated.
I HAD THE SAME KIT ON MY 1916 POWERED BEETLE,

Mick058 ·
rest assured things are happening again. Went to Westside last night but missed Brad, was hoping to go over the battle plan for the rest of the conversion. Aim is to have it ready for nats, so things will move quickly again.
Had some problems with some product i obtained which upset the apple cart but all good now.
Engine has gone in, minus manifolds etc and rear discs are on but that's it for now - hopefully something to see for all by the end of the week.

Alright, need advice re shortened sumps.
Question 1 - are they the same on all EJ20 engines. Some seem really low, while mine currently is about 20mm or so below the oil filter. Not much of a clearance saving - or is the idea to also do something about the oil filter?
Question 2 - any known issues with shortened sump? I have read all the other material about them on the forum, just want an update if any issues.
Question 3 - has anyone cracked the original by hitting it on the ground?
ian.mezz ·
Josh and I use the stock sump and we have stock suspension and the sumps have hit the ground real hard a lot of times, but no leaks yet ,
plus they were already damaged from the motors been dragged around on the floor .
stock sumps are cheap and you could fab up a little bash plate.
Ps they only hit the ground on boost on uneven road. 🤪
hellbugged ·
yeah, Ian, stock height and heavy torsion bars is the key..........
they do get holes in em tho 👎

Jak, what happened at the 'almost 4 years' mark? Bust the original or just thought to change.
Headers wise, im not 100% Joel, will try and catch up with Brad tonight - idea is to re-do it all, but as to where and how high - not sure yet.
So, just on question 1 - are all the sumps the same on EJ20 motors? Seems like a lot of work/cost for about a 20mm or so saving in clearance.
Does it put the oil filter at risk of being hit? OR do you make sure headers come just below it?
Guess it depends how low the car sits aswell, suspension setup etc.
Jak Rizzo ·

The almost 4 years came about that I had forgotten that my children were getting bigger, now 9 & 6, when I drop them to school I was noticing that i was "touching" speed humps in their school more & also the driveway out it was touching. I then realised that the kids were getting bigger, slightly.
It's not a problem for all the Mums in their BMW & Merc 4wd though LOL.
As for the headers, be careful as on the rexxy forums, they all complain from a lack of bottom end torque after changing the stock headers.
regards
Jak
Mick058 ·
thanks Jak, will keep that in mind re the headers - Brad may already be on top of that too.
psimitar ·
Modifying the sump is fairly easy mate. You lop off however much you wish and fabricate an inverted T to weld onto whats left of the original sump. The inverted T means you keep the same volume of oil in the sump.
Take a look at Custom Veedub in stafford brisbane and you'll see what i mean. Custom Veedub shortened sump
Mick058 ·
yeh i understand what you mean - i know capacity is the key - you need to make sure you add 'wings' or a make a 'T' shape as you say to keep capacity.
$600 though - a bit of dosh for 20mm or so gain (maybe less??). Also alot of debate in regards to shortening it all, even while increase capacity via width.
I think ill wait for now and see how it goes. The anti surge Pobjoy sump hung pretty low but i never hit it. Gear changes and a squat in a Sti engine may change that fact though.
Even i shortened it i would need to go for a remote oil filter, otherwise it will be the lowest thing and the saving clearance would not be worth it.
Mick058 ·
Some pics for people to see.
Sorry, there not that exciting, but at least its visual!
Gives an idea of clearance etc. Obviously the car isn't completely settled here - rolled it back and forth a little, but it would sit a little lower than this. Plus, currently no oil, water, intercooler, heat exchanger etc - so a little more weight out back to come.

u are going to have so much fun scaring the poo out of yourself everytime u drive it!.

1303Steve ·
Hi Mick
The car is looking good, I will have to come over for a look soon.
I have a bugs@5speed sump for my car, I haven't fitted it as yet.
With varying opinions on shortening sumps Ive invested in a 2 quart (1.8 litre) Accsump from Canton Racing to alleviate any oil starvation issues mand to do a pre lube before starting.
I will need to remotely mount the oil filter to run the Accusump.
The commonly available oil take off blocks have the fitting ports pointing straight down, by the time the fittings are fitted they end up lower that a stock oil filter.
So Ive also ordered a take off block from Canton
I'm planning on using the stock oil 2 water cooler until it proves unreliable, but Jak has said in another post that his oil temps with the stock cooler are fine, getting rid of the stock oil cooler would raise the oil fliter.
Steve
Jak Rizzo ·
with the sump that I made, I now have an oil capacity of 6 litres, up from the standard 5 litres. With the standard sump I only get my oil temps up to 90d on the track, thats after 5 laps around Eastern Creek on a 35d day. Now my oil temps are even lower! The last thing u need is a cooler on these things. U will never get the oil hot enough.
Keep as much of the factory stuff as possible & keep it simple, keep it reliable👍
Jak
Mick058 ·
so your not mounting a radiator at all for the oil?
And Jak, you have no issues this way either?
I'm not planning on running an oil cooler, but may in the future if i find the temps are high - if i shorten the sump, then i will get the oil cooler kit which runs a remote oil filter.
Mick058 ·
beat me to it.
Jak Rizzo ·
There is absolutely no reason to run an oil cooler with these motors. I have done countless trips on the freeway in the middle of summer sitting on 140kph, over 15 track days & never had the oil over 90d & thats an extreme temp for my oil. It's always much lower particularly on the street which is where our cars spend most of their time.
Spend your money elsewhere Mick. There is no reason to complicate these conversions with extra lines & coolers. there is enough of that as it is.
Jak
squizy ·
Mick are you running a narrowed beam? I want to throw this question out for comment if you are....
If you're running a narrowed beam, with all of that extra power, will it not make the car more prone to oversteer even swinging right around for that matter if it does get away from you? And therefore you might need to consider putting in a normal width beam to give you that extra front track, and therefore stability?
Mick058 ·
fair comment - what do people think? I have heard this from others too Squizy.
I had some 'advice' when i first had the car that i 'needed' to run a narrowed bar to keep the wheel choices - this was early on in the and i was on a steep learning curve.
I believe CT runs the same wheels without the narrowed beam and i believe not a whole bunch of negative camber.
Brad (westi) - what do you think? how much labor?
I have thought about this, forgot to ask Brad about it last night - better now then later! Also, i don't mind running a bit of Neg camber if i need to as its not a daily driver!
I could probably find someone to do a swap with if i needed too.
1303Steve ·
Hi
The factory water 2 oil coolers also give a faster warm up.
Mick before you decide to ditch the narrowed beam, think about future wheel choices, if you had any in mind that is.
17" Turbo twists would look good on your car.
Steve
Mick058 ·
tell me, by increasing wheel size on a narrowed beam, saying i increase 1inch track per side - will this result in the same outcome as a standard beam?
Or, if i added spacers to the current beam - say 1inch thick each side - would that be the same outcome as having a standard beam?
So what im saying is, will handling improve by sticking the wheels out further, or does the narrowed beam issues come simply from the fact that its narrowed?
Does this make ANY sense?
So is it all to do with wheel positioning, or will handling still suck simply due to the fact that the beam is narrowed, no matter how much i 'push' the wheels out.
Craig Torrens ·
If you want to do a swap for the beam let me know..................i would be interested inyour narrowed beam.
Mick058 ·
well convince me Craig 😂
Any input to the above questions?
1303Steve ·
Hi Mick
Spacers are no no.
But for the exercise sticking 1 inch spacers on a 2 inch narrowed beam is not the same as having a non narrowed beam.
The centre line of the tyre/wheel if using spacers is is moved further out from the centre pivot line of the steering knuckle, this will have many effects, extra load on wheels bearings, more likely that the suspension will be upset undulations and potholes etc.
pushing the wheels out on spacers will give you back the more stable handling of a stock beam but you'll then increase the stress on the front bearings due to shifting the load further out. In extreme load conditions, heavy cornering whilst braking, this could cause the stub axle to break off. its all about the point of leverage
Imo the shortened beams are for looks and the standard beam for handling but thats me 🙂
Mick058 ·
ha, well, worth asking - i could pretend i know all the answers and post rubbish all over the forum quoting even dumber guys from other forums.
Thanks Steve, i figured this would be the answer considering trailing arms and the like are still in the same position - didn't think of 'loads'.
when you get your blue slip , the sump has to comply with the 100mm ground clearance🙅
Mick058 ·

Mick058 ·
Correct. Come on guys, I need more opinions.

Obviously a stock width beam will give you more stability, but I don't think there will be that much difference. The centre of gravity is lowered and you also have wider than stock tyres.

Mick058 wrote:Correct. Come on guys, I need more opinions.
Stock width beam is the best Mick.................but then you need to make sure the wheels will clear the shock towers, and the guards. Dont forget you may need to get longer tierods (original ones) as yours may have been shortened for the beam.
Craig Torrens ·
hellbugged wrote:stock beam & dig those heavy sway bars back out
they've been sold..................maybe you can buy them back Mick 🙅..............there's a set on Ebay !
byronmcmanus59 ·
nah man as Simon said.. its not going to make a lick of difference..
at the moment your Tyre/rim/beam combo is working and your not
scrubbing out on anything.. you've got just as much tread on the road
now as you would without 2"beam.. its not going to make any difference..
just going to run into problems with trying to get your tyres to clear the guards..
psimitar ·
So you've lost an inch of track either side from the beam but do the new alloys/tyres fill the arches nicely? I mean out to the edge of the fender/wing without it scrubbing?
I personally would prefer the point of pivoting to be further out as per a std beam but then you have clearance issues with wide tyres fitting under stock arches. Without being able to try a std beam as wide as you can go tyre wise against the narrowed beam with wide tyres then its hard to say which would be best but a think the narrowed beam with wide tyres gives you the best grip you can hope for.
The lowering obviously helps with the centre of gravity so I think the other main concern is trying to keep the rear end level when cornering to minimise weight transfer and the chance of the rear end acting as a pendulum. The more level the rear then the better the weight/grip is distributed between the two rear tyres and conversely the front end too.

will those fuel lines pass an engineer's test. I guess the lines might be protected by the water pipes or are you planning on putting some type of cover over them. Also where the fuel lines pass through the floor pan under the fuel tank, maybe put a rubber grommet or similar to stop them rubbing steel on steel.
With that said and seeing all the good work done by Westi, he has probably already addressed these things and has a plan.

This thing is good for 550hp (not that ill need that much!) so Plazmaman tells us. Nice looking unit. Should sit just in front/above throttle body - well i think thats the idea - in a 36hp engine bay you seem to run out of room pretty quick - but man it looks good - minimum cutting and very factory look!

Looking good.
One thing, what is that O2 sensor you have in the manifold? It looks like a dirty old Nissan thing which won't work with the ECU. The front sensor is not an O2 sensor as such, it is a wideband of sorts and the heating of it is controlled by the ecu. You will get half a dozen fault codes and an unhappy ecu without the correct sensor.
The rear(post cat) sensor is more a traditional O2 sensor but is also heat controller by the ecu. The current control to heat it is all monitored also and codes will appear if the current is too high or too low.
1303Steve ·

When I was over at Westis the other day he mentioned that O2 sensor that was fitted was just an old one to block up hole while everything was being fitted.

My brother's Type 3 just munched a gearbox on the dyno. Under power in 3rd gear with just under 14psi boost at 170odd hp atw at just on 4000rpm it took all the teeth clean off 3rd gear. The thing makes 250hp plus but I guess the torque simply took care of the teeth rather easily.

yeah thats right, but it depend on the gears in the box, unlucky for me my third gear was the fine tooth gear which is a weak point away, hence it macine all the teeth of( photos on my members thread).if you have the larger tooth gear and are gentle with the clutch you should get away with it, i will find out fairly soon as im about to get my box back together and back to the dyno so time will tell.

in which bits? under the guards?
You can't see it, plus underneath of the car is all black. On the future to do list is re-do paint. Though gearbox is first - what a crap job when it blows! The more we squeeze in the back, the more crap that needs to be removed to take the g-box out.

Yep the stuff under the guards and around the engine bay. Considering it was body colour when you put the car in, I thought it would have been matched. May as well do it right first time. Although, if you're happy with it, then I'm happy.
Personally, I'm just amazed they turned around this job so quickly. It wasn't that long ago you had the 1916 up for sale. Kudos.
Mick058 ·
Yeh they did give me the option of matching the colour once the POR15 was on, but the amount of stuffing around, additional cost etc. didn't seem worth it. YOu wont see inside the wheel well and you wont see much of the engine bay firewall - its tight!!! Plus the car colour is dark, so the black looks fine to me.
I see your point though, green would be nice, but came down to time and dollors - but Westi did offer.
Turnaround is great, would of been quicker if it wasn't for some dodgy parts i bought.

Turns out the clutch problem i bought up in the past hit back - there is a problem with the way the pan was converted from auto - so new tube needed and a bit of a play to make sure its all good. Pain in the back, but we were pushing it anyways, let alone upholstery.
At least now i can enjoy the day tomorrow.
Camo ·
Come on Mick, there must have been some progress in the last 2 weeks. Any new photos. We are all here waiting for the big day, but not half as much as you!
Kev
Mick058 ·
Well, not too much has happened - mainly waiting.
The clutch cable tube was not worth fixing, so hydraulic it is. The cylinder on the gear-box leaver is fitted, the lines are yet to be run.
Air to water intercooler radiator is mounted - basically sits right under the gearbox THERE IS NO ROOM!
We are waiting on some sensor stuff - some bits have come and are getting tested. All the little fiddly bits add up and take time - we should get an engine start this week - im not goona guess as to a finish time.
Im starting to miss the car a little more now, though things have been really busy, therefore i don't notice it as much.
Should have some photos tomorrow night.
Stanley ·
Good work Mick.
That's a big arse sway bar too
Mick058 ·
yep, 22 or 24mm - it was there 'standard' one.
Hey, where are you based Stanley?
Stanley ·
Brisbane way
Mick058 ·
my old man's at Karana Downs - is that near you?
Stanley ·
yep...right across the river. Could almost throw a rock into Karana Downs
Mick058 ·
i never see any veedubs when im there - and im there every month for work! ill keep an extra eye out for you
Turbo54 ·
Mick, can you post some pics of the radiator setup under the gearbox. I was going to mount mine above or at the front of the car like yours. What pump are you going to use to pump the water? Davis Craig?
T54
Mick058 ·
Hey T54 - will take some pics tonight - its not a big radiator. Though the water tank is quite big as you can see.
Stanley ·
give me a hoy next time you're around
Mick058 ·
will do, would love to see your drag beetle!
Craig Torrens ·
updates ????
Mick058 ·
tonight. I will go see this arvo and take as many shots as i can. CLutch, intercooler, air box, dress sheet for fire wall and anything else - all the little things take soooo much time.
Mick058 ·
Alright, a few photos.
The radiator for the intercooler is basically an oil cooler. It fits well, it isn't in any danger where it is. The middle section of the sway bar sits lower than the radiator. Should work well.
Jak Rizzo ·
Hi Mick
I originally had my radiator for the WAIC at the back, but after I moved it to the front my inlet temps dropped by 8 to 10 degrees! Just a thought for u.
regards
Jak
Mick058 ·
yeh, see how it goes - the airflow under the car should run along it nicely. Summer will tell
JVLRacing ·
Mick058 wrote:Alright, a few photos.

good idea....i had a oil cooler under my car...the coolin down works well. So as a rad it should work😎
Jak Rizzo ·
Won't the heat from the gearbox heat the radiator?
Jak
Mick058 ·
Dont know if it would make that big an impact - we can really only prove these things by running the car and measuring temps. I would of thought the radiator in the front would have dispersed more heat onto the WAIC radiator than the gearbox.
The rad i had in the front of my rotary beetle use to produce a fair bit of hot air under the lid.
it will all be good for now because it isn't that hot - really have to take it out on hot summer days and see how it responds. Same with track days or longer trips, working the turbo or not - time will tell.
Mick058 ·
Clutch arrangement - no lines run yet.
Mick058 ·
And the engine sitting patiently while we wait for one more part - then we should be able to bolt everything up and give it 'controlled' spin (without spinning wheels, or breaking gearbox......😢)
Mick058 ·
And a little bit of eye candy from the westside boys. When the parts are there things move quick.
colonel mustard ·
heck yeah. that looks sweet. huge rad on that rotor. love it. your car is loooking great mick. hydrolic clutch looks sweet. do you run the line through the old cable tube ?? what does it look like at the pedal assembly.... did you have to change the orginal pedal???
Mick058 ·
ill try to get more pics on saturday to show pedal etc.
hopefully it should of been started by then, so there may be some vids.
Jak Rizzo ·
Mick058 wrote:Dont know if it would make that big an impact - we can really only prove these things by running the car and measuring temps. I would of thought the radiator in the front would have dispersed more heat onto the WAIC radiator than the gearbox.
The waic radiator goes in front of the main radiator for the engine, not behind, thats how I have mine, so do all the RS Liberty's.
regards
Jak
Mick058 ·
yeh, we'll just have to see how it goes. What are your intake temps?
Mick058 ·
Also, where in the back did you have your WAIC rad Jak?
Jak Rizzo ·
5 degrees above ambient on the street, up to 30d above ambient on the track after 5 laps in Summer. I have the Microtech Dash units that has inlet temps, but was told not to use it as it's not accurate enough, I use a simple digital temp guage from jaycar, sender goes in the silicon between the intercooler & throttle body.
Been there for 4 years now, cost $35 from memory. U can also see the difference when u play around with different pod filter housings, (cold air box).
theres pretty much only 2 things that can kill these engines, hot air intake temps & lack of oil pressure. They only come with a 4.5L sump which is pretty lame for a 2L turbo engine, most big ends are done from Lack of Oil pressure on the EJ20T.
regards
Jak
Jak Rizzo ·
Funnily enough, the exact same spot u have yours. I even had it angled so that it caught air , I moved it to above the left rear trailing arm with a scoop, but it still was getting hot, so I put a big alloy radiator up front. I got it off the RS Liberty forums for $40, bargain. The temp drop was instantly noticable.
Next time u take your car for a drive, stop, get underneath & touch the gearbox. See how long u can keep your hand on it lol.
regards
Jak
Flintstones ·
Mick, are you going to put a heat shield around the clutch arrangement?
With the exhaust in there that close especially when you really get it hot and glowing, I'd be worried about how effective it would work...
Cheers
D
Mick058 ·
i figured the same - but i assume Brad is gonna run the lines first, then put something in. I will ask the question when i see him on Saturday nonetheless.
izac ·
any more progress yet Mick? 😎
Craig Torrens ·
yeah where's the photo's of the burnouts 😂
Mick058 ·
Alright, no photos just yet - should get some more tonight - BUT - its time to start talking gearbox's.
I've talked to Dangerous a couple of times and ill be getting him to do it for me. I aim to get it done by xmas, so i want to start planning and knowing what my budget is.
Dave says he can make a strong beetle box, so i think that may be the best way to go considering the conversion is around the single side plate box.
I would like recommendations on what bits i should buy and on ratios - 5 speed an option or a waste - new case (rhino case) or stock case etc etc.
All input appreciated.
Budget wise??? about $1000 right???? 🙅🤪
i'd like to keep it somewhere around 5k ish.
ideas?
ps - brands and pricing will help!
hellbugged ·
simple, albins gears, limo diff, built by DB with requests for every trick he has...........but do it properly and do a kombi box ❗❗❗❗❗❗
five speed is waste of time (and yes i have one in my car, but have also driven a ej20 with balls).................. these things have power and tourque enough to pull whatever final ratio you choose and bigger rpm drops would suit it better than a close ratio box that would be the norm for us aircooled guys
you could get real smart about it and dyno the car and build a nice four speed that uses the max tourque (via rpm drop) in the first couple of gears then, drops fair on max HP when it goes to fourth............all this after you have selected a final drive that has it come on boost at the 115km/h mark?...........unless you are aiming more for a track monster
don't gear to tall in first nor fourth................frying clutches with a tall first is no fun and you dont need the car to be capable of 300km/h, just have enough legs to run down your favourite circuits straight.
had the notch out recently.............it's geared very tall and those gears dissapear in the blink of an eye............the streets suddenly seem much shorter, smaller and scarier.......... MAKES IT A GOOD RACE CAR........
good to see that rear sway bar is back...........would be nice to see some 27mm torsion bars in the parts inventory too😉..........
kombi CV's and 228mm clutch are goooooooood 🥷
you would be surprised how many aussie drag cars have those kombi boxes when you start nosing around
build a kombi box!!!!!!!...........ask DB why he has one😁
Craig Torrens ·
^^^^
What Daimo said....
Just give DB $5000 and pick it up when its done.
Dont bother asking on a furum.............you're getting Dave to build it so just trust his judgement 😉
Mick058 ·
i trust Dave's judgement. Just like to debate pro's and con's of options.
Like, how much modifying will i need to fit the kombi box in if it's that much stronger than the beetle box? Ain't much room left!
hellbugged ·
easily installed, just a couple of special mounts and using a land or berg intermediate housing........but can we blow the budget out to $6K pleeeeaase😂............get the box built and go after a limo diff next year.
what are we lookiong at.....(and these are guesstimated❗)
mounts and intermediate $1200
albins gears $1600
new parts $1100
core/second hand parts $700
labour $1100
porsche CV/axle kit (penrose) $1000
new clutch/flyweel/pressure plate $1000
less sale of used gear $$$$?
limo diff next pull down $3000🤘
as you know, the flywheel, clutch etc you currently have will be easily sold, as there is always demand for them if you go this road and to the bigger kombi clutch.
typethreeking ·
kombi box is the way to go, dont know about the aircooled not having as much torque as a ej20t, from the lower rpm i would think vw makes more. Any turbo drag vw has a tall first so it makes boost, a short first wont make boost at all or bearly any than you can set up a even spread after that.
hellbugged ·

yeah i wasn't talking about efi turbo aircooled obviously...........yes on the first, but you don't want something that does 80km/h either
typethreeking ·
yeah not that tall but enough to load up the engine to allow boost to be made
Burgo ·
Omagosh dude, thats the same colour as my '74 beetle- dont copy next time 😂
Mick058 ·
So are there any beetle box votes?? need more advice. Should check with Westi too what it would cost to stick the kombi box in - everything is tight and close - not sure if a kombi will blow out cost over a super strong beetle box.
What can you do with the beetle box?
reub ·
Getting expensive yet dude 😀
I still would go with Dave's advice.
Mick058 ·
heehee - slightly, but its ok - i've gotten away with it by selling 10years worth of music stuff i don't use anymore - the g-box will be my xmas pressie (plus my saved 'pocket money' 😂)
What are you using for your box reub?
Dave, if your reading can you share input. I feel a little bad bothering Dave all the time as i hadn't given him a cent yet - so im trying to do some research without PM'ing Dave a million questions - just so i work out a little of what i want and then tell DAve - i want this, what do i need, how much.
From talking to Dave he says he can make a strong beetle box - but how strong depends how much money i throw at it - so i'm trying to work out whats best for strength vs cost vs mod's to existing conversion.
reub-revhead wrote:Getting expensive yet dude 😀

reub ·
I'm lucky to have a Porsche G50 in VWRX, however it needs to come out. I think one of the bearings has gone in it, and from what I understand it is cheaper to fix now rather then when it goes bang 🙂
It will eventually venture to Dave, where he can share the anatomy of a G50 with everyone via photos. A certain aircooled engine has taken priority for me at the moment...
Good luck with your research. Given the quality of the build on your car I wouldn't scrimp for the best solution, which I'd guess to be a kombi box for maximum strength.
Porsche stuff is just to bloody expensive so don't go there 🙂
Mick058 ·
Lucky you!
Yeh, Porsche sounds good - but i think its too late to go down that track.
psimitar ·
I heard from a guy local to me that Renault gearboxes can go in a bug and are pretty strong. Fraid I didn't ask from what model but maybe worth a look into. 🙂
Joel ·
its the UN5 box isnt it?
dangerous ·
Hi Mick,
don't be afraid to U2U me or ring or email.
I am more that happy to share advice here though, for all to share.
There is no doubt that the Bus box is a better option,
BUT without allowing for it at the beginning of the project, it will be a problem to fit it all in your car.
Plus the additional cost of a 2lt core,
and the aftermarket intermediate housing,(and labour to fit),
are probably negatives in YOUR CAR.
The splines where the CV flanges go are probably the only complication I think,
and you can order the Quaife diff from England (via New Zealand) that has the larger 002 Bus splines.
The Albins gears are no problem and will fit your late box.
The only other issue is keeping the crrownwheel and pinion in mesh,
and with the single side cove trans, this can be dealt with to an acceptable level.
Gearing wise, see how yours drives after the conversion is done,
and see if you can talk with BIFF,
who has a similar conversion on his bug with
the 3.0 first, 2.00 second, 1.26 third anf 0.82 fouth gear.
I would probably select something slightly different, but untill you try yours,
that would be a good guide.
matberry ·
I'm no Renault nut , but I have seen both the 5 and 4 speed Renault box's in Volksies, the 5 speed is the UN5 and I believe the 4 speed to be called UN1. The stock gearing is useable with BIG offroad rubber 33's ok but 35's are better, otherwise Albins does do a full set of gears if you want to do a rebuild. They have a 10 1/4" diff and are good for 400hp off road or 700hp street/track. The 5 speed is LONG though and requires pan surgery, splitting the torsions and running short bars with long cap spring plates does the trick. Mak in Bris still has a 4 speed for sale, and this was in a bay window kombi with offroad rubber and 930 joints😉, here is a link.http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=75583#pid708280
Mick058 ·
so a double side plate, or aluminum side plate or a rhino case is of no advantage?
Pardon ignorance Dave, but can you clarify the complication with the splines on CV flange?
typethreeking ·
the reno box is very strong but to run in a street car you will need to change the diff as they come with 5.4 ratio. Albins do a 3.88 diff but cost is $2500 so it added up but depends on what you want to do with the car.
dangerous ·
The splines on the IRS bug box are a weak area.
You can order the Quaife with a larger diameter 1800 BUS spline.
With just a spacer and a seal change, the bus CV flanges will go on, thus eliminating that problem area.
The RHINO Case or Autocraft case are strong options,
but really require TWO, FULL CIRCLE side covers, and a through bolt/stud.(see westi's trans),
to be as good(perhaps a little better...autocraft case much better but $$$!) than the later SSC case.
The only advantage of an aftermarket side cover on the NON LOAD side(rhs) is
if you tie both sides with one or more through studs.

maybe just buy a new car Mick ! 😵💫

Hi Mick
When is the beast going to be back on the road? Will it be ready for Warwick?
cu
Mick058 ·
better be!! yeh, its really close - still need to tie in to the shock mounts and a few little things i want to get done while its on the shop - then maybe some teething pains. But yes, definitely planning for Warrick - i'll tow it up, spend a week working up there, spend the long weekend at Warrick, then spend a week in Broadbeach with my wife - condition of entry 😁

Does this help> Should have a pic of it altogether after the weekend - hopefully.
hi mick, awesome car 😀 popped in on westi after i was told it was just down the road from vvds, very glad i did despite horrid roads & crazy sydney traffic though. looked far better in person despite the layer of dust, everything fits quite nicely, get some bigger brakes for the thing though 👍 when its done your going to have to put videos on youtube of starting driving etc etc etc, im curious to know if it will sound & go as good as it looks

Hey mate, when did you go by? I still havent actually seen it with all the plumbing in place - Westi reckens it looks awesome. You probably understand why i wanna keep the beetle box - its tight ay!!!
Thanks for the nice comment - people seem to say that alot (looks better in person) - will have to take some vids and good photos once finished.
Big brakes? YES - but gearbox first - gearbox by christmas, big brakes probably mid next year.
Sorry i have no photos, went in yesterday for a look but they'd gone home early. good to know there human at westside mufflers and don't work there 24/7!
STIDUB ·
late friday, & had the pleasure of start of nsw school holiday traffic from there up the F3, i pray you have a good solution for the box as its a little late to change your mind & no there isnt much room at all under there, that said what is there already fits quite nicely, slighly concerned how low the oil cooler/ radiator for the cooler sits but theres not really any other options left in the rear, unless you wanted to cut ducts into guards or have a whale tail & mount it in there 🤪 your definately going to have to find better quality road surface to drive it on when its done, sydney gets worse each time i visit
Mick058 ·
STIDUB - yeh the radiator for the intercooler is low, but the sump and oil filter is lower - so if i hit im in trouble. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

a few more photos - this is basically what it looks like bolted up - i think it looks awesome!

Surprisingly you can get to all the 'serviceable' needs of the engine - all the stuff you need to get to you can, unless it needs serious work obviously. Brad did an awesome job of making sure everything that needs to be serviced and changed on the engine is accessible and removable.

u sure it rides like a normal car ian with 165s and stock ride height having that much power 😂😂😂
sorry for the hijack mick,

alright - well as you may have heard Westi (Brad) is pretty sick. From what i hear he is still in Hospital in Brisbane - so understandably things have slowed down a little the last couple of weeks.
BUT - i had a call yesterday morning from Beau saying they have started the car and it sounds good, has no leaks and isn't blowing any smoke. As the engine was a wrecker JDM engine this was a concern.
So i brought the camera with me today, will have a look and listen and a DRIVE this afternoon (i cautious drive...). I should have video footage of the car running for tomorrow. Don't expect any burnouts or wheel stands, but you'll get some sound.
Camo ·
Yes...........Yes............Yes !!!!!!
As BIG Kev use to say (before he died) I'm excited
Bet you cant wait to get down there.
On a side note, hope Brad is on the mend and back with us soon.

Cmon Mick, bring it over and i will take you for a spin 😂
Mick058 ·
Flintstones - well, i got behind the wheel BUT didn't take it for a drive 🙁 clutch still needs a little playing, master cylinder may be too big so clutch is hard as.
Craig - No probs mate, just hand me over a bank cheque for $40k first, then your free to take a spin!
RESULTS
Its starts!! yay! Sounds good, its much quieter than the aircooled, which does make me happy and sad - wife is very happy about this point. I have a larger starter motor of some kind on there (i think there is a pic on page 1 of this thread) so it starts beautifully. Revs and responds well. Still need to check over it all, make sure thermostat is opening properly etc. ITs booked in for Dyno on Friday, possibly early next week if Friday gets pushed back. Basically we're aiming for a good safe tune that will keep the engine happy and the HP reasonable. Don't expect insane HP figures as were not trying to squeeze as much HP out of it as we can - there is no need!
i have some vids, currently uploading them so ill put them on as we go. i think there are 6 short vids - no moving shots sorry, but at least you'll here it start and running.
EXCUSE THE POOR COMMENTARY! NEXT TIME ILL REMEMBER NOT TO TALK ON CAMERA.
Other news is that Brad should be back in a couple of days - i believe he is better now which is great news for Brad. Also means we can get the car finished off and rego'd. Ill need full blue slip after the 20th so im keen to get it on the road before then.
Vids shortly.

Should be making more than 130kw/174hp even on 6psi. Your later model STI engine will be more efficient than my 94 model wrx engine & I have 152kw/204hp on 8psi. 215ft pounds of tourque. Even if u run wastegate pressure as I do, I think from memory that 12psi is wastegate pressure on the STI late model turbo's
How much timing & fuel is in it? They fall over with more than 29d timing & my sweet spot for fuel is 12.0:1 on boost. Stock rexy come from the factory with 10.0:1 & less.
Your car will be lighter than my 1020kilo fatso Mick, so the 58 will smell from the poo in your pants.
U have so may variables, inlet temps, flow from the aftermarket intercooler, dump pipe design & air inlet design. Header mods etc.
I took my dyno man for a drive the other day (he got his cape caught in the door) we were just putting around & I got into it, he was looking everywhere for a grab handle LOL. he said he wasn't expecting anything like that & now understood why I didin't want to turn the boost up & why i was happy with 204hp @ the wheels. He reckons that it would put his R33 Skyline to shame & it runs mid 12s. To impress someone that builds twin turbo v8's for aliving u know u have something special.
Prepare to be dazzled Mick, your jaw will be sore from smiling too👍

😂😂 on private roads of course !!
Mick058 ·
hmmm...200kph club. In a 58 beetle. Hmmm, may take a little while yet to get the confidence.
I saw Dyno man yesterday afternoon and it was still early days on the tune. They wanted to tweak things a fair bit more. They'd only done the one power run as mentioned above at 130kw. Theres a whole bunch of stuff they need to set and adjust and also tune out of the factory ECU to get it all working properly. Hopefully hear something back soon!
Also, 3mnths out of rego is next Wednesday - so i'm really keen to get it registered and engineered by then, that way i can avoid the extra costs and hassles associated with an unregistered car. See what happens i guess.
i didn't get to hear it running on the dyno but it looked the business sitting on the dyno. Lets see if it can produce it.
rose ·
Hi Mick
Don't worry about the rego as it has to be blue slipped anyway so you get a full 12 months rego.. So you need to just put your number plates on hold if you want to keep them. Otherwise you will have to hand them in and than reorder them which will cost you more.
So close.
Mick058 ·
How does the green slip work? i purchased that 3mnths ago...Does that mean they'll always be out of sync?
1303Steve ·
Hi Mick
Bet your like a kid the night before Christmas. Don't you know anybody that can fix the rego, wink wink. Don't hand your plates in, if your not already you have to pay a yearly fee.

Yes it does work, it's amazing stuff. The difference afterwards is very noticable. I know mine needs when it starts to get the slightest bit of lumpy idle. it drives sooo much better after using it. Is this a fuel additive or oil flush Jak?
ian.mezz ·
if its the cleaner I get from Subaru, you spray it in a inlet manifld vacuum hose as per instruction on the can
it appears to work.
Jak Rizzo ·
Is this a fuel additive or oil flush Jak? [/quote]
It gets rid of carbon build up Dave, in the combustion chambers, piston tops valves etc. Apparently porsche & subaru suffer from this the most because of the falt 4/6 configuration. I always wondered if u could use it in the beetle engine?.
U warm the engine up to operating temp, turn it off, spray half the can in, let it sit for 10 minutes, start it up, it's hard to start, take off the same vacuum line & spray the rest of the can in whilst holding the throttle open so it doesn't stall. The more white smoke that pours from the exhaust the better. Seat of the pants difference is instantly noticable.

Hi Mick
Whats the deal, did they fit a bodgy turbo?
Steve
Mick058 ·
appears that they've given me a TD04 turbo. I think there getting 150kw atw with that turbo. I'd need to get the proper Sti turbo to get 200kw plus. Not that i need it, but its still the wrong turbo. See what i can get from the wrecker otherwise may have to leave as is for now...
Mick058 ·
Well thats that.
Dyno man has done his work. He is happy with the engine, all is running well, he just had to add a knock sensor to it but otherwise the tuning went well.
As said above it has the wrong turbo. It has a TD04 on it and thats all it can do. It dyno'd at 150kw atw (200HP). Supposedly Dyno man said it was a scary little thing after taking it for a test drive.
I could spend another $800 and get myself an Sti turbo, and Dyno man informs me that would give the extra 50kw's or so, but really the only purpose of getting more power out of the engine is to say that it can - i doubt i'd actually use the full power anytime soon - 200hp will probably scare me enough. It is good to know that the engine is well within the safe limits which should bring longevity. I'd much rather throw the $800 towards a g-box and bigger brakes.
Hopefully i'll have a dyno sheet to put up soon - still would have been good to see what the bigger turbo would bring, though they may have hurt the box. Annoyed at the wrecker for giving me the wrong turbo - he'd probably sold it to someone before i bought the half cut - o well - maybe its for the best for now!!!
So so far so good - still need to get it weighed and engineered. hopefully rego soon and a bit of fun!
reub ·
Congrats dude👍 (other then being ripped on the turbo)...
You'll still scare yourself with 200hp. I still remember my first boost experience in vwrx - felt like endless power. Then on a cold night (14deg inlet temps - is cold for Darwin) I remember loosing traction easier then usual and almost left human skid marks as well..
Really look forward to seeing the car in motion and in person at Warwick👍

I think 150 KW at the wheels will be plenty interesting, and you'll get to do more driving and less gearbox pulling!

Hey Mick we got the same turbo...heheh...wanna race? no actually i'm already over the TD04🙅 it has an inlet of 41mm...

Mick058 ·
Well I think I'm more excited and less worried now!!! If I get to the stage of wanting more power I know its only $800 away. I'm sure it'll be plenty at 200hp!!
Turbo54 ·
Just to give you an idea, My friend has a pretty hot WRX and that runs some ex rally car modified VF30. That made 219kw on all fours with a monster torque curve. Pulls really hard and once in third it gets really scary.
Adam Debiasi had a turbo 1915 that made 230hp 170kw at the wheel and was a 11 second car. It did 11.88 on a 38 degree day at 115mph from memory.
I think you are going to have fun!

ok, i need some advice for those that know more about subbies than i.
MR wrecker ( Dyno man's nemesis) tells me he has a stack of subby (and other) turbos under the counter - his words were 'come have a look and take what you want i don't care' - i tried to get him to look at some model numbers but he wasn't interested. I reckon, why not go get me a free spare turbo considering he duded me of the one i was suppose to get. I'll just leave the TD04 on for now, but am not sure which to pick of the bunch.
Seems like WRX turbos are easy to come buy so assume most of what he has there has come off a WRX. My question is, which one do i get? Did subby upgrade from the TD04 with something better? If so, are the flanges the same bolt pattern? Are dimensions flange to flange the same? i ask because then it means its a bolt in job. Any feedback from those in the know would be appreciated. Worst case ill just get another TD04 if he has one sitting there - as a spare.

I'd have to get lucky for him to have a VF30 sitting around. I assume he'd have standard WRX turbos sitting around. What came with them? I read that they used to be TD05 and then they changed to TD04 because it spooled up earlier and gave better bottom end.

or did you use some fancy race pressure plate??

check out the boost curve 👎
Jak Rizzo ·
Don't worry about the boost curve Mick.
Worry about if it stays cool, do u have any air locks, are the inlet temps safe, see if u can get it engineered & registered, weighbridge ticket, db reading, are the brakes ok, brake bias etc.
The power will always be there now & for later. just get used to what u have. U don't want to be one of these projects where the car is either on the dyno or in the garage being pulled apart. Theres enough of those cars in the vw scene
enjoy it & be safe
Jak
Mick058 ·
Cheers Jak,
Dyno man said all temps, intakes etc were good. From what i hear it worked pretty hard on the dyno and that was a good test for all components concerned.
Jak, you need to get one of the data scan things (its earlier in the post) - there so good, tells you everything you need to know. YOu set your min and max temps or range etc and its real time monitoring.
From the little drive i took it on, i was very very happy. I only rolled on the accelerator and it never hit full throttle. i've lost all patience now and just wanna get the car back ASAP. One little taste and now i can't wait. When boost comes on (which comes in quite early) its good fun.
I only took it on some back roads (all three of them) so i didnt get much of a go - but still, sounded soooooo nice - soooo much quieter. Felt like the nose of the car wanted to hit you in the face when boost kicked in.
Any standard maintenance advice would be appreciated
Jak Rizzo ·
Very good.
My Microtech dash tells me everything I need to know. Once the car is tuned. Thats it. I only put my car back on the dyno recently for the first time in 4 1/2 years as I wanted to check the health of the engine & I also changed the muffler which made it run leaner, so the mixtures were adjusted to suit.
I was fortunate? enough to finish my conversion in the middle of summer, so if it wasn't going to cool properly it would have been obvious. The other day on the dyno it only took a few runs to adjust the mixtures & the dyno fan wasnt' needed.
The only other things that I can think of is if u put some new platinum plugs in & also a new timing belt, just for peace of mind. I pressume u may have done this when u bought the motor though.
Don't forget the Subaru upper engine cleaner as well, although I'm sure your dyno man suggested this before tuning.
Did u get a print out of the air/fuel ratio's? also ask for your dyno charts to be done in RPM rather then kph, not only will u know your shift points, torque etc, it will also help u set up your rev limiter.
What was the ft pounds of torque at the wheels?
regards
Jak
PS if u really want to change the turbo for pennies, The TD05 that I have is pretty hard to beat. on wastegate pressure alone it pulls 4psi @ 2500rpm , 7psi @ 3000rpm then straight lines it to 8psi @ 7000rpm without dropping off. There is no boost curve, it's a line.
Mick058 ·

good to here everything went well, i can say i know what it feels like with that power, pretty cool. Once you get the bugs sorted im sure you will have some fun!!!
westi ·
its the boost curve you tools it falls of because the turbo is shagged.it come s on well and falls over,no biggy.
as for tdo5 are you guys serious,i wouldn't put a tdo5 on anything that i wanted to go,td 04 & td05 rubbish.
vf is what it came out with so why not that or better.why go backwards.
matberry ·
Go Westi
Good to hear your on song again.....welcome back
Looks to me that the turbo cant provide enough boost
Jak Rizzo ·
Mick,
Just a comparison for u between turbos. Paul & I had identical power out puts of 150kw at the wheels. he used the TD04 with 12psi, peak power was at 5500rpm from memory. I have the larger TD05 running only 8psi & peak power was at 6600rpm. It's now at 6000rpm but that was with some breathing mods.
Don't get too caught up in the whole "if u change the turbo u will get 50kw more at the wheels" speel. It rolls off the tounge easy enough, but power from a wrx engine in a beetle compared to an actual wrx are 2 very different things. Theres probably only about 4 tuners in the country that have had a wrx powered bug on their dyno.
Many late model rexxy owners put the TD05 on their cars. Do some research on Rexnet & RS Liberty forums.
There are still many variables to making reliable power with what u currently have, what are the air fuel ratios for starters?
Jak
westi ·
jak riddle me this, why walk backwards when forwards is so much easier, why put on another second hand item that might possibly have the same problem.why put on a turbo that out dates the engine.why not put on the same or better than it came with.
and if you think it won't make another 50 kw's,fair enough, but just because you don't think it won't doesn't mean it isn't possible.
and 4 tuners in australia that have tuned wrx powered vw's on there dyno no your stabbing at things there,.
all the temp's water, air blah, blah air/ fuel.blah/blah.dude get over it, it runs cooler and cleaner than it would in a rexy, the dyno guy, paul. was spewing that it didn't have a good turbo on it because it has so much potential.he rang after spending 1/2 on the tune to say the turbo was shit.we told him to do the best he could with what he had.it's no biggy.
but in the future will be easy to get more power out of it.and it won't be a td05,unless there is going to be 2 off them.then you will see a tdo5 make some good power.
anyhow that took me about 4 hrs to write due to one handed wonder .will chat soon.
i will speak to paul to get the print out's for you if it's a must, everything was sweet, the only reason boost pressure was shown was for mikey,

Mick can put whatever turbo he likes on it. I only gave my experience of the TD05 as thats what I have experienced. It would be silly of me to give advice on the VF series turbo as I've never had one.
Theres nothing to get over?. Was purely giving advice on what I have experienced with my own conversion. My questions aren't a stab at anyone, I'm genuinly interested in this stuff. Not so interested in pages of debate over wether or not someone should put Kadrons on their 1600 LOL.
If someone has done a similar thing to me, but another way to acheive a better resullt, then I want to learn, only an idiot thinks they know everything.
Just would be nice to see Mick now enjoy the car. I'm stoked it's finished & its not even mine. I hope he gets used to 200hp @ the wheels first. Then go nuts & see if it can stay in a straight line with 200kw , would be lots of fun!. i'm not that game myself.

Actually the only limited VF turbo experience is in Matts Bug, Back in mid 2005 Matt put a VF24 (from memory) on, at the time he drove up to the Coast to take me for a run it had "only" 218hp @ the wheels on 14psi. It was BALLISTIC. It made my car feel slow in comparison. There was no lag, it was on from the turn of the key. It was quick on a $850 wrecker engine that is still going to today, would probably be even more nuts on a late model STI engine.
I think? the VF24 turbo's are used on the Group N rally cars?

Twin scroll turbo with titanium turbine and shaft. Smaller compressor housing than VF36/VF37 provides tremendous spool up capabilities but less top end than VF36/37. The spool capabilities of this turbo are demonstrated on the JDM Legacy GT, which reaches peak torque at 2400RPM."

typethreeking wrote:i cant believe how small the turbo is pictured earlier in this post, it makes my turbo look so much bigger. I used to work for subaru and we used to comment on how small the turbos were and how much better they would go with a bigger turbo. my compressor housing has a 60mm intake and in comparison to the 50 cent piece its a far bit bigger. Bigger is better....
Craig Torrens ·
no luck re the brakes Mick...........unless you take the drop spindles off ?!
STIDUB ·
whats the issue with the dropped spindles not working with other brakes? is it because of where the beams upper mount joins in relation to the centerline of the axle? surely someone could design a suitable caliper bracket to suit farily easily...? i cant picture anything else being a problem from my almost non existant experience with dropped spindles? just a thought 🙂
Craig Torrens ·
all comes down to cost.....................design and making is easy, but it all takes time and $$.

rizzo baby,it's so hard to write /read how it was meant to sound,no intent on sounding nasty if thats how it came across,i am not the most literate person at the best of times.and i only have the one eagle finger pecking at the keyboard at once.i was just trying to give poor old mikey a break,he doesn't know heaps about cars,so everything is taken in then processed, and then he starts to question everything, which is cool, because he learns heaps, but sometimes it's a bit hard to listen to so many different opinions.
cheers

thats pretty much the gist of the issue, if you wish to run drop spindles with a bigger disc you would need to have a really big offset to push the disc further away from the stub and control arms and other than a ridiculously narrowed beam or even more ridiculous flared guards, it makes it hard to work around.... with standard spindles you can have the discs cup over the whole thing and still retain a standard offset or narrower (see links below for pics of my kit, runs commodore calipers, made by vintage)
three pages of new brake kits.... nothing useful??
And he has disc kits for drum brake supers, not many of them in Australia!
Is the engineer OK with droped spindles?
psimitar ·
Mick, are you running wide 5 wheels or 5 stud porsche or 4 stud VW standard?
If you running anything other than wide 5 it opens up your options considerably. I think you can still run the disc pretty darned close to the hub surface. There is plenty of meat in those dropped spindle to allow the current mounting points to be ditched and new ones machined to allow for the larger disc.
Have a look at VWCools disc brake kit on parts for sale forum. It's not meant for dropped spindles but it may very well be able to be modified to suit. I reckon the hub and disc would fit a treat and then it's just a case of mounting the caliper.
I know it's more money but if you want to go custom and don't have the expertise to do the work yourself then it is gonna cost. If I had the spare time I'd say send me the parts and I could figure something out but I have trouble finding the time/money to get my project moving forward 🙂

updates ?

John Sherman has rear super kits...... i'd be interested in finding out how much the classic one's are though... 🙂 would be a decent upgrade!

Gotta do brakes
New hubs 6160 ali
New bearings
New blank discs slotted not cross drilled.
New slider calipers twin piston PBR
New fittings to suit
Caliper brackets
Should have some photos tomorrow if i get there.
Aiming for an end of next week finish...

twin piston sliders... off what? vt> commo?

yeh i believe so, Commodore vt-vz

Brad will custom make the hub

Just make sure mr engineer is ok with Alloy hubs. Remember different rates of expansion
Craig Torrens ·
did Ian, Jak, Paul, Matt and the other subie conversion beetles have to uprate their front brakes to get engineered ?
dangerous ·
Tim Andrews wrote:Just make sure mr engineer is ok with Alloy hubs. Remember different rates of expansion
I know that some Porsche's and probably other factory cars use aluminium-alloy hubs and iron rotors,
so should be OK if design-engineered correctly.
Jak Rizzo ·
Craig Torrens wrote:did Ian, Jak, Paul, Matt and the other subie conversion beetles have to uprate their front brakes to get engineered ?
No, we didn't, one of them amazingly had his engineered with drum brakes on the rear🤪
Unless u are going to do track work, there is no need to upgrade the front brakes.
In a light car like Micks, I think that it will be easy to "over brake" the car.
I think some engineers just cover all conversions with the same blanket of rules, rather than treating them on an individual basis.
VW components are seriously over engineered & are up to the task, non vw people wouldnt' know that.

Jak

I still don't get why, for a road Beetle with a hot engine, it won't be OK with say T3 drums on the rear and some form of disc brake up front that is similar in diameter to the original VW discs, 279mm? I know there is more weight in the back but under braking the weight is transferred forward so could someone explain eactly why discs are required on the rear.
From an engineers point of view wouldn't they just see a modified version of the original VW setup? Front discs and rear drums.
Coming from the UK the majority of Bugs with hot engines still use the std VW kit without any problems. Maybe some slotted/ drilled discs and sport pads in there but otherwise std setup and they pull up just fine.
Cheers 🙂

And I'm loving the car dude. Very cool 😎 Hope you get her as you want before the money disappears 🙂
ian.mezz ·
rear drums are ok
I think most V8 from the early days had drums all-round.
I also think a Dodge viper has rear drums .
On my super all the brakes where replaced with new ones.
disc, calipers, drums , shoes, wheel cylinders, pipes, hoses, Master cylinder. etc etc.
trickysimon ·
Real men have 4WD (4 wheel drum) 😂
ttriebler ·
Yep I reckon it could be easy to over-brake one of these cars. I put Subaru vented disks and standard twin pot calipers onto my WRMANX project today and compared them to the original VW discs. Same size disc (except vented on the Subie one) and caliper is twin pot. Now that's for a car that probably weighs a good 500kg more than a beetle. I would have thought std VW disks up front and T3 drums on the back to be more than adequate.
Mick058 ·
i think there is a general rule that the brakes need to be to 'donor car specs': ie: vented, as that is what the Subies have. Not 100%. Engineer wanted a front brake upgrade so were doing it.
He hadn't mentioned it earlier which is a bit of a pain, but anyways, thats the way these things go.
psimitar ·
Thing that I find interesting is that they don't seem to take the weight factor into account, or do they?
a Subie weighs 400-500kg more than a bug. With the bigger engine your bug is maybe 300-400kg lighter than a subie so std bug discs up front and rear drums in good working order should still haul things in nicely. All these brake mods required for an engineers report means you now have a car thats 0-100-0 times and distances are far superior to the donor vehicle.🤪
I just think it's amusing, well and maybe a little frustrating due to the extra effort required to meet the engineers wishes 🙂
Craig Torrens ·
the joys of a modified car 😉
Mick, at least you know Brad and the team are doing it RIGHT 👍
Mick058 ·
yeh, what can i do! O well, its something to tick off the list of possible 'to do's'. Its done now, engineer wants it so we do it.
Calipers are freaking huge though

yeh, getting there - still fabin' brakes. WE had issues finding the right rotor to fit. Theres that ridge kinda thing within the porsche rim thats given us some fitment issues. Suppose to finish this week, but ill get excited when its in the garage! 🤪
STIDUB ·
i feel these posts have been lacking in pics recently mick

ha, i know! Brad said he'd take some photos and post, but they've had a lot of fun with the brake rotor, so not too much happening.

some pics for now...

Mick058 ·
well looks like i wont make Warrick 🙁
The car might be ready but i can't get my hands on a trailer. I've tied in work (as i do lots in Brisbane) and some time off with my wife @ Broadbeach with the Warrick show - means i'm up there for 2weeks and need to hire a car trailer for 2 weeks. I can't afford $500 to hire a trailer right at the moment and can't justify spending $500 more on the car right now, so i won't be making it with the car - which blows!!!!
ill still come to spectate but it isn't the same without your car, plus it seems harder to 'talk' to people without your car there. Suxs cause it sounds like a bit of a special year at Warwick this year with so many new entries.
Guess there's next year...😠
reub ·
I all good dude. I won't have my car there but am still looking forward to having a ball and meeting some great people!

atleast with big commondore brakes the parts are cheap.

your old mate Craig Torrens may have a trailer sitting around not being used??????????

someone must have a trailer they will lend you dude. just ask on here! 🙂
Craig Torrens ·
Mick was going to use mine but unfortunately I have to use it during the period he is away.
STIDUB ·
perhaps put a wanted ad on gumtree or similar?
Mick058 ·
Yeh, Craigy needed his trailer this time. Craig has been very generous on numerous occasions in the past, thanks mate 🙂
Brad (westi) is asking round aswell - see how we go, we may get lucky - blow to miss out, just can't fork out another $500 for the car. If anyone is willing to lend for a $100 let me know!!! i have plenty of trailer experience!

Mick058 ·
hey Peter, the pm didn't come through...

If its unregistered can i still run it???

Might be able to grab that Cd off you now that your car will be there 😂
ian.mezz ·
entries close this Friday September 25th

Simon, yeh mate, the 2 CD's are still sitting inside the driver door!
Ian, yep, just checking i can drive unregistered, just in case rego doesn't quite happen.

thats awesome Mick! nice to hear the car will be able to make it with you.
hope all goes well 👍

Call craig to find out. half the car's aren't rego'd - you should be fine. maybe you could borrow a tradeplate if someone has one to take it down town one morning..?

booked up, registered and ready to go!! YEEHAA. look forward to meeting lots of people and to a great weekend.
Whats the deal with drinks and stuff? Soft and Alcoholic - bring an esky? Local bottle 'O'?

just buy stuff before you go to warwick, its probs cheaper in brisbane. ice is your friend, buy it from a local servo 🙂

all the best mate....hope the trip goes smooth and you post some good times on the track......and hopefully post some good photos when you get back!! 😂😂

who thinks a photo of you/your car for warwick thread is in order?

I just started one with Tony's manx, Maybe I'll change the title to make it more obvious.
Enjoy the test driving Mick. 👍

I thought so matt, but it was a bit confusing... make it people/car attendance... not everyone will have their car there 🙁 - but i will be with a far more awesome car 🙂

Mick Troy basically had only driven the Type 3 last year around the block so to speak before he ran it at warwick. Good place to test it out and remember be careful with that gearbox LOL.

What diameter are those discs? Standard WRX fronts?
The turbo's on that Ferrari look like they cold give Jenna Jameson a run for her money, they're bloody massive 😁
Mick058 ·
well got to Brissy just fine - have had a few blasts around he backroads, but just 1st and 2nd gear stuff - its heaps of fun! Its too low though i think - it hits the deck sometimes through boost. Be nice to be able to cruise at 100k and see how it feels, or even around town, but that will have to wait for rego.
be good fun at warwick - it'll be very tamed.

my old mans at karana downs

Mick,
I can meet you at the karalee Woolies around 12.00ish. You would have pretty much gone passed it on your way to karana. We can then maybe meet Troy at the servo just before Willowbank around 12.30ish. It should then take no more than 1 1/2 hours at a leisurely pace to Warwick.
either way give me a call tonight
Cheers

thanks mate - still felt like a bit of a black sheep in the suby, but hopefully there'll be a few more suby's in the future.
Car was fun, i'd never raced before and never driven the 58 past 60k's, so was an awesome weekend. Great to catch up with all the boys and say hello - the fellowship was great!
bigger turbo, better gearbox and less tyre pressure for next year - let alone being cautious about my sump hitting the track everytime boost came in 😂😂😂😂
STIDUB ·
dont forget the thicker torsion bars so it doesnt squat so much 🙂
nice meeting you too, you look way younger than i expected
Craig Torrens ·
he already has 28mm sway aways !!
colonel mustard ·
well... they need to be thicker.... hahaha. Dunno what dave is trying to say...
but it does sit down alot when it comes on boost.... once a better clearnace sump goes in, its going to hit a two bolt exhaust flange, or the muffler... the ride height it sick! so something to stiffen it up will be on the cards..... 🙂

psimitar ·
Mick, I'm on the path to the dark side yet mine is gonna go rotary 🙂 Will be a good few years before I have the funds for the wankel but i'll hopefully have the front brake all sorted before then. Looking forward to making the hubs and what not for them 🙂
Probably start off as a modded normally aspirated for about 160bhp so the 1600 box can take it and then later turbo it with a 2l kombi box. All good me thinks. I'll be interested to see how the normally aspirated goes.
Jason, was nice to meet you dude. How are funds coming along for the yellow one? If you need some mechanical help and can make it to north brissy I can help you out 😉
colonel mustard ·
hey dude. Its more body work that im trying to get sorted now... mechanically i just need parts, a few bits and pieces... its coming together slowly though. need to get my new/secondhand drums/discs machined and installed with the second hand calipers and new pads. have new wheel cylinders and shoes for the rear sorted. hopefully don't need a new M/C but that will be painful if i do... but thats last on the braking upgrade list of things to do. Engine wise, I can't do anything untill the body work is done (because it is pushed in a bit....) - but I have the new exhaust ready to go in (smaller pipe, the current one is way toooooo large) may have found a single dcnf manifold [will need new boots and intake gaskets + a bit of paint], because thats what im going to run on the 1600 (and try and fob my second carbie off to my mechanic is exchange for other parts) then its just to fit some new tinware, get the throttle cable to work (need a special linkage for the carb..) install the breather box/ vent the valve covers.. and new spark plug leads...... that will get me to the end of the year. chances of that? low.
then, its lowering, wheels and tires... this that this.... hopefully by october next year.... New engine with different setup (maybe pobjoy with dual dells and sidewinder.....? i can dream on that one i guess..)
polak ·

thanks for the comments Polak - i really want to make a car that looks good and goes good. It really looks so much better in person too, not sure why it doesn't photograph well - might try to get some 'proper' photos done one day.
I was stoked that the car won its first award at Warwick - i'd taken it to shows before but they didnt seem to like it. Thanks go to Brad and westside really as the reason it won the trophy was because the conversion was so nice and consistent.
Aim for next year at Warwick is to get into the 7s. I don't think it will be too hard to do, mainly gearbox! then i can launch and quick shift. i can see why people get into drag racing, its good fun.
Mick058 ·
sounds good mate! i love the different stuff - i had a 12a in my 68 5years ago, but it wasn't the best engine though - needed work at the time. im sure you'd put in a rebuilt or low k's one. look forward to the pics of your build

I was thinkin a 12A but the early 13b's had rear drums on the RX7. This means it should keep the engineer happy especially as the front disks on the early RX7 were 30-40mm less in diameter. Will probably have to go rear discs when I turbo it but until then I want to see how she goes with front discs and rear drums. The wankel normally aspirated will probably weigh roughly the same as the VW engine by the looks of things.
It'll be rebuilt and have the ports flowed too so 135bhp should go to 160ish 🙂
Wish I had the cash for it now but one thing at a time 😉
jason, if you have 2 dncf's at present why not fit em both to the 1600? Probably go some smaller chokes but means you can use these for the bigger engine too 😉 unless they're 36's and then they'd probably only be good upto a 1900cc motor. Twin carbs will make the 1600 far livelier.
trickysimon ·
Nice to meet you Mick and thanks for the CD's.
Lovin Fort Defiance and Summer Rain 👍
Ps. Jason, I might have some 24 chokes for those DCNFs to swap with you if you decide to run them both on the 1600,
(if these 24's end up being too small for my 1915)
colonel mustard ·
already swapped the manifolds.
Will be looking to go a fair bit more serious if/when I go for 1916.
The single will do the job for now (and I can sell the other single manifold and carb once I've set mine up - $$$)
I want a cd! 🙂

That IS a nice kitchen.
Perfect for this sort of stuff:🤪

😂😂😂 Love it! Yeh, thought my wife wouldn't be too impressed to see the gearbox sitting there! BUT, it was still wrapped at the time! Unfortunately the garage isn't big and at the moment isn't laid out with a bench or in an orderly way - when you move seems like all the 'crap' ends up in the garage...for now!!! (lucky the car is still at Westside)
I was just excited to get my car part so quick. i ended up unwrapping it to make sure it was all clean and had no cracks etc.

Hey Troy, just something i do on the side. The company i work for generally avoid the domestic market as its not what were after - so basically, i sell domestic application pumps after hours - mainly through ebay - will set up an ebay store properly soon, but its only a new thing at the moment, though proving worth while 👍

Well some progress - no pics at this stage sorry.
We were able to get the pedals all fixed up - we've used the original pedals but modified the lower section and moved the brake and clutch cylinder on the other side of the fire wall. The clutch feels amazing, not only because of how hard it was with the incorrect travel but of how good it feels compared to the cable clutch. It really is an ease and very comfortable, just like any modern day car - this is a very big 👍 in my eyes.
Brakes are sorted too now - engineer will still need to properly test them and approve them but the pedal felt very good. It felt controllable, wasn't squishy but wasn't too hard - didn't lock or make your head hit the windscreen when applying a little pressure, you can control when you really want the brakes to kick in. I cant remember exactly the master size, i think it was an inch and 1/8 and was a drag master cylinder. Yet to get all info and part numbers once the car is all done and finished.
We also change the rear springs around and applied more tension. I personally think its WAYYYY to stiff in the rear now, i think there is basically no travel! But, first we want to test it all - ill drive it for a couple of weeks and see if i can get the back end to deck out through boost, if not, we'll release some of the spring tension and try that. I don't think ill last too long as is because its way to stiff/no travel. The car sits a little too high at the rear too - we'll see if it settles but i don't think it will at this stage. Anyways, is a little bit of trial and error with it for now.
Slowly building up my g-box parts, once thats ready to go ill send stuff up to DB and start planning the turbo upgrade - by then im sure i would of got used to the 200hp and be ready for a little more 🥷
All is progressing well and looks like engineering will happen this week and ill finally have my car at home after almost 9mnths! I think Brad is happy to get it out of his workshop for a little too - no doubt it will have a few more visits in the years to come!
ill try to get some pics
Camo ·
Hi Mick,
Good to finally meet you on the week-end. Glad its all coming together for you and I bet you cant wait to have the car sitting in the driveway and go for a spin when you want.
The technical info re the brakes will be good for all VeeDubbers and may make a future job a little easier for some. Its always hard being the first to try something new and can be expensive.
In relation to the gearbox, I gather that Dave has been advising you on what parts to get along the way. What sort of horsepower will the gearbox be able to handle. Also, is it base on a Beetle gearbox or the larger Kombi boxes.
Good luck with the engineer and I will have to ask if you can take me for a spin one day. Hang on, thats how all your work started didn't it. Go for a little drive and you're hooked 😂
Kev
Mick058 ·
hey Kev, yes, nice to meet you too - shame i didnt have the car there.
Yeh, they have been a few things we've done that others hadn't done the same yet - brake kits for dropped spindles, that's been lots of fun!
Box wise, i think thats too hard to answer re the housepower. Depends how hard you drive it too - but, yes, DB's advice all the way - Rhino case, HD side covers, Quaife, Albin gears and all the extra DB tricks and assembly. I'm hoping to get upto 280-300hp out of the engine without hurting it. Thats what the turbo upgrade should bring. I'd like to spend some time with the 200hp first - time wise, probably have the upgrade in by Warwick next year 😀

Mick058 ·
hmmm - rear end i think will be too stiff. Brad got to drive to engineers yesterday so his had more of a chance than me! Brad said was great on smooth roads but once it got bumpy it was pretty harsh. i can adjust whats there and give it more travel, so i may do that real soon depending how annoying the 'thud' is, otherwise i might bite the bullet and get some proper adjustable rear coil overs.
Rego should be tomorrow - got all the paper work so should be good!

Have been off the site for a while and just spent half the day reading your post from start to finish....got to page 27 and had to do some work...just finished the last 8 pages.
SENSATIONAL job mate.
Its great that you took your time with each section and the results speak for themselves....neat!
With respect to the turbo..there are two choices for an ej20t. You can buy a brand new tdo5 with a 16g wheel for $500 on ebay from a guy on sydney...i thinks his name is AUTURBO...or get a VF34 which is pretty much the best of the IHI turbos. There is a second hand one on Rexnet today for $750 of new they range between $1150-$1300.
They will both flow similar cmf and will also spool up quickly. The vf34 is ball bearing and thats why its ultimately better. It will spool up quicker and easier, will last a little longer(one of the only real reasons we have blow off valves..is to stop pressure trying to push back on the turbo from where it came when you close the throttle body)..... Oh and to make the cool high pitch whistle when spooling. I have the vf24 from the version 5sti which has the same exhaust compressor as the 34 although much smaller intake and thus flows alot less at any given psi.
Again awesome work...we will have to get the other boys together and go waste some evo's.
I also had a little bingle in mine 3 weeks ago..rear ender with a bitch who slams on the brakes when she dropped her smoke. Tip...have a little give in the radiator mounts and not nearly so hard to fix. Bonnet screwed, aero cracked and headlight destroyed. Upsetting..but fixed.

Error Codes
P0102 MAF SENSOR LOW INPUT
P0458 EVAP PURGE VALVE CIRCUIT LOW
P1230 FUEL PUMP CONTROL UNIT MALFUNCTION
P0037 REAR 02 SENSOR LOW INPUT
P0245 WASTEGATE SOLENOID A LOW
Im having issues with the engine as i get towards the higher rev range - maybe about 4000rpm and up, it starts to spit and cut out, kinda splattering. I usually can warm it up a little, get one good run at full revs and then after that it starts to spit and carry on when i get on the throttle.
ian.mezz ·
I would just unplug those things and check connection.
disconnect battery put it back on and just start it then drive again see what it does.
some codes don't make car run bad,
put a fuel pressure gauge on it , check spark plug colour to see if fueling up.
mine has speedo and idle valve code but doesnt cause any trouble.
71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·
I heard joel saying that some rexy motors start to do what your describing if their speeno sensors arent moving, like are you driving it up the street, on a dyno or just in neutral.
Mick058 ·
usually happens around 4000rpm or so - just driving around
71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·
Okay, dunno then , but i would do what ian.mez said and take those sensors out give em a clean and disconnect the battery again see what happens.
ian.mezz ·
yeah I had a loose hose from intercooler to throttle body and my car would lose power etc.

sounds like its going into limp mode
loooking at that list i'd be checking for a dodgy earth
Al and Miles setup the earlier ones to ground the whole system through the manifold, im guessing later ones would be the same

I put all my earths in the one spot easier to check that way🤪🙅🤪
limp mode normally doesnt make it, spit and cut out, kinda splattering

Hi Mick, if you need help sorting the engine management give me a call. Subaru management is pretty fussy, you need to have it all working correctly or it will do silly things like cut out at 4000rpm.
Post a pic of the current engine bay layout showing the MAF sensor, boost sensor etc and I can also see if there is anything obvious. In any case it shouldn't be a big deal to fix.

It's actually not an entirely bad idea Jason. If the diagnostic port is still within the wiring loom then they can connect it to their diagnostic machine and see all the voltage levels etc for the sensors.
The problem would be convincing them to work on a none std vehicle 😂

I think they would charge a fair bit as its not even a standard subaru setup....

jzk25 ·
You don't need subaru to check live data or codes, any aftermarket scanner like Coda, Hanatech, OTC, carmann etc will do it. Most workshops will have one of these. It's more likely a setup problem though.
jzk25 ·
P0102 MAF SENSOR LOW INPUT - Is the MAF sensor still fitted to a std size tube(~60mm ID)?
P0458 EVAP PURGE VALVE CIRCUIT LOW- Unplugged or has been unplugged.
P1230 FUEL PUMP CONTROL UNIT MALFUNCTION - Did you get one of these? It is necessary. If you did get one then make sure the fuel pump body is insulated and the power and earth for the pump only go to the control unit. Bosch pumps will ground through the pump body and the control unit will not work properly in this case.
P0037 REAR 02 SENSOR LOW INPUT - This could be a positioning problem. The front sensor is an A/F ratio sensor(like a wideband) the rear is a normal O2 sensor and the ecu uses the two to check catalyst efficiency. If the sensor is too close or too far away from the cat it can cause issues.
P0245 WASTEGATE SOLENOID A LOW - Probably from being unplugged.
Firstly, most of these codes could be in memory and just caused by the ecu being powered up with the sensors unplugged. Clear the codes and wait for the engine light to come back on, then recheck.
The Maf code is most likely to be cuasing the problem but it could simply be overboosting. They are pretty sensitive to this sort of change to the exhaust and intake and will overboost easily. (And don't you have a TDO4 on it? This will also not match the boost control mapping).
Mick058 ·

The airflow meter looks to be in a larger tube than std but if it was retuned by pulse that shouldn't matter.
I'd say the boost control solenoid is probably missing too seeing as you are using a bleed valve. This will cause a fault code which could be the cause of the cut.
Is the fuel pump controller in use? It needs to be there.

Well, unfortunately the time has come, way too early really! I've been pondering over this the last few months as some of you know and circumstances means that at this time i need to sell the bug.
My wife and i bought a house in August last year and 'other' things are on the cards. I really really want to keep it, but its just not practical and its too much money sitting there not doing anything. I've also started a small side business which has consumed any time that i did have to work and play with the bug.
I think this thread speaks for itself - im realistic, i know i wont get my money back and i always set out to build the best car i could knowing that i was throwing money away - it was never my intention to sell, but things and priorities change. I have taken no short cuts on this car - everything done is top dollar. The condition and panel work on this car is immaculate and amazing. I have seen a lot of brilliantly restored cars, but for an early 58 this car is extremely straight. No bog, no rust, none of that crap.
I've come up with what i believe is more than a fair price:
Car complete as is: $33,000
Car without conversion: $22,000
If you are interested in the car without the conversion, its easy to go back to aircooled, there is even more room in the 36hp engine bay. Cutting on the car is minimal, thats the way we did it - alternatively you can stick in another suby, one that isn't done to the extreme like mine.
As a complete car you get all you see in the thread - it has been completely engineered, it has rego until November. The ECU is completely tuned by pulse racing ($1500 worth) - the later model suby engines need a whole bunch more done to them.
If you want to know what the car cost me i will tell you - only if your interested in the car. Pretty obvious it cost me a bucket load more than the asking price. I also have receipts. Even minus the conversion, you'd get no where near the quality for 22k - TRUST ME!
My loss, your gain.

i really want someone to buy it as is, will hurt to see it pulled...
psimitar ·
Dude that sucks 🙅 If I had 33K i'd take her but I don't even own a house yet 🙁
it will be sacrilege if someone splits the conversion from her. Good luck with the sale 🙂
JVLRacing ·
this will be a hard pill to swollar!!!! i dont know if u will get wat u want due to the tight asses around......🤪
Mick058 ·
Time will tell - otherwise, i strip the whole thing, which would really suck - but all the parts are there - the money is there.
Rather you got the dosh or ya don't - price is beyond fair.
colonel mustard ·
The price is very very fair. the quality of this car is amazing. Not downing on anyone else, but it is also an amazing conversion, and from what I experienced a few months back, it is a flippin' amazing ride. It's really sad to see Mick sell this as I know (when it was working) it was alot of fun for him (and others that have experienced it). This is an awesome car if you want a street legal, fast and safe bug, and dont want to spend double what he has (which is easily what it would cost to put together a car like this), this is a mighty fine car. Also, Mick is a super tops bloke, and I owe him many thanks for allowing me to tag along with him at warwick, and be able to experience vw drag racing at its finest. 🙂
Tim Andrews ·
I don't think that it has anything to do with being tight,i'd rather spend 30k a '03 wrx with all the mod cons and 3k on a '70 beetle. No offence intended Mick, I hope you manage to re-coup some cash, after all it is a great car. But your market group may not be found here.
JVLRacing wrote:this will be a hard pill to swollar!!!! i dont know if u will get wat u want due to the tight asses around......🤪
Mick058 ·
gotta be the right buyer - its all good, i know what im in for. As i said i can part the car out and re-coup the same amount. People would rather buy in small bits then in one go.
Ask anyone what they've spent on a full resto and 30k is loose change. Again, depends what you want - some people hate 03 wrx's and would rather am older car, hence this forum...

and it has alot to do with people with tight asses....its called a bargain😎

thats why its advertised o/s 🙂 & someone looking at a wicked beetle will most likely not care about air con, power steer etc, why else would you be looking at an older car 👍
mick, after my suggestion of it going to the uk etc, i had a horrible image of it rusting to peices where they salt the roads 🙁 fingers crossed it doesnt happen

😂😂😂 Nice!
Had a few bites so far - some inspections over the next week. If not enough interest on the whole car then ill put some alternate 'parting' options up - though would need to sell rolling shell as one (no engine/no interior and whatever esle depending price).
Already have offer on 'conversion package' which i am happy with - still would rather sell as one - early days yet.
Scarab ·
Good luck with the sale mate, I for one think its worth every cent!
As for Brians comment above, I think its most of us that are dreaming.....dreaming that we could afford to buy, or build a car with the quality of your build!!
Shame you have to sell it mate after such hard work 🙁
Just had a thought, maybe I could put a couple of my kids on Ebay....that might bring enough money for my to buy your bug!!......thinking about it though, with my kids, it would only bring enough for a deposit!! 😂😂
All the best mate!

mick, dont let the wife see this but can you sell her instead? 😂 (sorry but it had to be said) no no i dont mean it, just sad to see you have it up for sale, i know the $$$ & effort well & its really sad that you gotta sell, the ride in it was priceless, IF my own car didnt mean so much & i wasnt so far into it id part it all out & buy, funny how theres only ONE hater on the thread, agree with what was said, show me what you built & spent $$$ blood sweat & tears on, then show the receipts for it, jealousy perhaps?
sides sees your side cos of his own bug, and my influence from the darkside haha, mick i still havent found the cookies they supposedly have over here, have you?

DUDE! ....just keep it.
Sure you'll spend more money on it in the future, but it is your baby. 👍
Dasdubber ·
Gotta do what you gotta do Mick.....my wife was more upset than me when I sold the ragtop, I wasn't too phased as its only a car and you can always build another one and make it better (and can learn from the mistakes/lessons for the next build).
Not saying you shouldn't keep it of course 😂

I have trimmed some of the comment

Golde60 ·
hey man keep it for a bit longer and get the right price for it.
its gotta be worth more in australia than os as the engineering and rego is done.
i know this cos i went through it on my car and that was a simple t4 conversion with a few other bits.
i wish i was back in aus for good, then i would think seriously about selling mine and buying yours
good luck with the sale. take your time but dont split it up.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Hopefully it will stay in Australia and not get destroyed by the European weather conditions!! 33K is cheap considering I can imagine how much all this would have cost in the first place. Lost of tyre kickers in the volksy circles who only wish they could build a car like this but bag anyone who tries to sell it for waaaay cheaper than what was spent on it. I tend to call it jealousy personally!!After all 33K for a 58 with all the fruit is pretty good value and a damm sweet ride. Got to see this car in the flesh to believe how good it actually is. At that price it would almost go close to cover what Troy has spent on his engine/drivetrain etc in the fastback over the last 10 years or so and you get a whole car not JUST an engine......
Good luck with the sale Mick you will be sad to see her go no doubt. I had to part with a car I poured a lot of time and energy into to buy a house and trust me it is worth it. I've made 5 times the amount of money I sold the car for on my house in 2 years and a few renovations. Now i am able to buy my next house which will have all the room i need to work on the Kombi properly......
1303Steve ·
Hi
This is a beautiful car, I looked under it many times at Westies.
If the car did go to UK or Eroupe, I doubt that it would get driven in any adverse conditions.
Many people talk about building cars and losing money, you only loose money when you sell them.
Steve
Mick058 ·
see what happens - just need to be patient i guess - i want it to stay as one, just depends which i want more, that or the money. I think if someone wanted the car as is without conversion i would go that way. 666bug (Cameron) is a really nice guy too and i know how much effort he has put into his bug, so i'd be happy to sell him the conversion - need the right price for the 58 to do that though.
See what happens - i can enjoy the car for now 👍

I'm sure Mick is VERY negotiable on price 👍
Apparently subie conversions only cost $800 to do, so its better value to buy it without the motor for $22k !!!

enjoy it for a few years and wait til I come back to aus.
seriously though its to soon to sell it. have some fun in it for a while and if a good offer comes along think about it. dont break it up. worth more engineered, rego'd and complete surely. as craig said, subi bits are cheap.

Alright, my mind is made up. Making my decision in light of 'the greater good'. Too much money sitting in the garage which could be used very wisely elsewhere. At this stage im stripping the whole car and will be keeping the shell and pan only for a rainy day. Its too good to sell for nothing. Unless someone offers me a good price for pan and shell, ill be keeping it.
EVERYTHING ELSE IS NOW FOR SALE - EVERY PART. Let me know what you want and make some offers. First in best dressed. Pricing will be less than what i paid, but not for nothing.

Turn Key WRX STi Subaru Conversion for beetle
Michael
Postcode 2221 - Blakehurst Sydney
item - Engine and bits.
For sale is a complete turn key subaru conversion with a late model '02' STi WRX Subaru engine.
Conversion is a 'show' conversion. It's also a late model EJ20 engine, not a 90s model. This makes a BIG difference when it comes to tuning and programming the engine - do not compare the price to a 90s WRX engine - its not the same.
I had been offered $10,000 plus post but the guy could not get the finance approval.
i am asking for $9,000 + delivery (should be under $200 as i will send via work)
If you are interested and think this is too much, PM me your offer - offers will be considered but not necessarily accepted.
If you do not want this conversion or do not like the price or think the price is unfair, please keep these comments to yourself.
Conversion includes everything - engine, ecu, $1500 tune on ecu, sensors, stainless exhaust, brackets, intercooler radiator, plazma man, radiator, cowling/housing for radiator, pipes, fuel pumps, water pump, reservoir for intercooler, fans, wiring loom - EVERYTHING!

PM if you need to confirm anything.
If you do not want this shell and pan or do not like the price or think the price is unfair, please keep these comments to yourself.
the paint is 15years old and still immaculate - not rust, all straight panels, etc etc.
ASking $8,000 - if you are interested and think thats too much, send me a pm or call

Selling Engine – Compete Engine Package includes
- ‘02’ STi Engine with Around 50,000km’s (Cost $3600)
- Custom Vee Dub Suby Adapter kit ($1395 – see link http://www.customveedub.com.au/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=38)
- Complete stainless steel exhaust
- ECU with Pulse racing tune and new sensors ($1575)
- SAAS Heavy duty clutch
- Complete loom, already modified for turnkey installation
- Mod engine plate & new bolts
- Mod flywheel & new bolts
- Manifold switch/rotate (no need to cut rear fire wall)
- Mod alternator bracket (and polish up new bracket)
- Make new bracket tensioner and supply belt
- Remove & fit new Shortened sump with extra storage
- weld in sender for oil temp
- Supply of warning light adapter including in car bracket with dumby lights
- Oil change and filter
The full kit list above cost me $9500 – all there for you to see. From memory the exhaust was over a $1000 (full stainless steel).
ASKING $6000
This is turnkey, you just need to get your cooling and intercooler done. Remember the post 2000 suby engines need a lot more tuning work, hence the $1575 from pulse racing – its all dyno tune time, plus a couple of sensors. No expense paid and no risk – the engine has been proven and tested. Buying from wreaker sometimes you don’t know if the engine has been damaged. The risk is not there in this cause.

Jack,
sorry, but if you read it all you would see that Mick has pulled the car apart and sold it all off. Read through it all and you will see where he had things done and if you have to pay someone to do all the work you would be looking at over $40,000.
Hope this helps, Kev
RIP - old 58 😉
Ollie ·
Good bump on this thread, i think this was one of my favorite beetles.
I was devastated when it was parted out - still, that's life!
And Jack, as Kev said it would be a bucketload of cash, but worth every hard earned dollar! I think when a car becomes this tuned, modified and customized, receipts happen to have a way of disappearing for good (so as to ensure a healthy heart!).
Still, I'd rather spend 40k on a modified beetle that would feel like a stock new car, then 40k on a new car that feels like new stock beetle 😁
