FS: Early 1955 Oval Beetle - deposit taken

dvs_vw ·

Ok, so the time has come where it is now an issue to store these cars again, so I'm going to have to sell one of them. Problem is, I can't decide which I'd like to sell and which I'd like to keep, so its up to you guys, the buyers, as which ever one sells first will be the one I get rid of! I really don't get to drive both of them, so its money wasted on rego and insurance, plus my storage issues having 3 cars and 1 garage, and I'm looking into a European holiday so the money would be nice for that aswell.

1.

Sellers name - Michael
Suburb/postcode - Toowong, Brisbane
Item description - 1955 VW Beetle
Condition - Ratty, but good and solid
Item cost - $8500 with everything listed below(except the plates), other prices can be worked out by removing certain items.

1955 VW Beetle rat
This is a mostly original april 1955 oval with all early 55 parts like ribbed doors, heart tail lights, larger neck fuel tank, straight gear stick, correct hood and w decklid etc. It is in very good shape, no real large body marks or dents, some small rust bubbles are poking through in the roof but not really anywhere else, and the hood has a decent split where it takes all the strain from being propped up, but it could be fixed. The pan is pretty much rust free as are the channels and pillar bases, but the battery tray has been replaced at some point.

The car was rewired when I got it and everything works electrically, except the semaphores which are broken anyeway, as it has the indicators. The motor is a 36hp, but not the original one, its had a few minor things fixed and it runs 100% fine, hasn't missed a beat in 12 months and only leaks a small amount of oil. Its still 6 volt and has a new battery, and generator belt. The crash box is a little noisey, but still shifts fine and has a new clutch in it as of September last year, again this also leaks oil. It has 99k miles on the clock, which could be genuine, going by the interior condition this could be its first trip round the odometer.

The interior is pretty mint original as far as the seats and trims go, the door trims are a little warped and wobbly and the carpet and roof liner are ratty, but again, all there.

It has quite a few accessories which can either be sold with the car or you can chose to not have some and the price can be reduced accordingly, all of these plus the mods are worth about $4-5k+ easily so its a good buy with everything. There is a Flat 4 roof rack, mesh visor, rear venetian, flying VW(this will stay on the car), yellow fog light, rear STOP light, bambus parcel tray(staying) and a few badges etc. The RAT:055 plates can be sold with the car to a QLD buyer, but at an extra cost to the price of the vehicle if you desire, but I would like to keep them as I like to keep all my plates.

2 sets of wheels, the hard to find Black BRMs currently fitted with 145 Bridgestone Smartcar tyres up front and 165 nangkangs out back with about 90% tread chroem lug bolts and lock bolts and the centre caps are available, and the standard smoothie steel wheels painted matt black , trims rings and some decent but ratty hubcaps with 135/165 nangkangs, fronts are near new, rears have a small amount left, and again, could be sold with either set or both price depending.

The car has a Custom Vee Dub adjustable 2in narrowed beam, with pretty much all new steering and suspension components up front, new shocks and CB dropped spindles, with adjustable spring plates in the rear and new shocks once again. Its sits very low, but could be raised back up very easily by the adjusters front and rear. Receipts for all work carried out by CVD.

Thats about all I can think of for now, this car will be at Dubs by the Pub next weekend, so you guys can have a look there. Any questions just ask here or PM or call 0402 842 548. It has rego until April 08 for a QLD buyer, but it won't come with an RWC, you'll have to organise your own. I also have a Birth certificate which you can have a copy of.

I'm also happy to send the car interstate at the buyers expense if anyone is interested.

On the steelies, trims, and caps

2. - 1959 VW Beetle listed below is SOLD!

Sellers name - Michael
Suburb/postcode - Toowong, Brisbane
Item description - 1959 VW Beetle
Condition - Excellent
Item cost - $9000 with 356 steelies, less without if you provide your own wheels.

1959 VW Beetle
3rd owner car brought up from Victoria with all original parts and is a matching numbers car. It has mostly orginal paint in good nick and the body in pretty damn good condition for its age with a few minor 10c piece sized dents, and absolutely no rust, not in the body or the pan/channels. It could do with a good, professional polish to bring it back up to a very nice shine. All chrome work is in great condition and nothing really needs doing externally. It has rare flash trim fitted with a neat red pinstripe to accentuate it and it looks great. all lights are immaculate in conditon with the original Bosch scripted front glass still fitted.

The motor is the original engine and crash box, both been rebuilt by the previous owner, and everything runs extremely well and has just had an oil change. It has 82k original miles on the clock. Everything electrical works fine, including the semaphores, however only in the last few weeks the wipers are playing up and would need some attention.

The interior is superb with the original door trims, roof liner and rear seat being in immaculate condition and the front seats have been retrimmed in red leather to match. The carpet is new oatmeal square weave with red leather trimming and has rubber floor mats. It has a period 6v radio which looks excellent, but has never been wired up.

The car is fitted with an oval era solid visor, rear venetian, flash trim as mentioned before, yellow fog light, Safety star, and some neat little badges etc, hotrod style pinstriping on the decklid and the hood around the emblem. It has stainless eyelids which are not currently fitted but are included in the sale. It also has stainless Koch 3 bar horn grilles(and originals) and stainless Breezies. The FKD15 plates are not available for sale with the car. It has genuine Porsche 356 steel wheels, painted red, with smoothie chrome hubcaps and also the OG ones, chrome trim rings and has 135's in decent condition up front and 165 with quite alot of tread ouit the back and Atlas whitewall inserts. Will sell minus these wheels for less, if you provide your own set to take the car away on. It also has the original sales reciept from 31/12/1959 and brochures in its original sales booklet pouch.

It has a very solid, well made front end setup with an adjustable beam, and it rides very nicely for a lowered beetle, out the back it is down about 1 spline and again, rides very smoothly. Rego until May 08 and a RWC will be provided upon sale.

Again, thats about all I can think of for now, if you have any questions comment here, PM, or call 0402 842 548. I'm also happy to send this car interstate at the buyer expense once again.

Roof rack not on this car anymore

Thanks
Michael

jhp1 ·

Noooooooo. Dont do it mate. Are you keeping one at least?
Still got the ute mate?
Get rid of that instead thats what I'm doing soon much better to keep the dubs buddy.
Oh and if I had the spare coin I'd grab them both in a heart beat
Cheers
Jase

3toes ·

How much for the oval without any of the accessories?

dvs_vw ·

Jase, I got rid of the ute almost a year ago, felt I had to before the VE came out when VZ prices would plummet, goit good money for it so that was good......onto a GTR now! And yeah I will be keeping one, but I can't decide, so its up to the buyers!

3toes - define "without any accessories", which bits are you not interested in?

3toes ·

Basically anything that doesn't belong on the car. Roofrack, visor, spots, venetian, badges, flying V and bambus shelf.

Cheers
Chris

dvs_vw ·

Ok, well the flying VW will stay on the car, simply because it'll leave holes if I take it off and I siliconed it on as an extra precaution from theft!(but I could take it off if you really didn't want it) I could take the shelf out, badges off and the spotlight off but it wouldn't really reduce the value a great deal as together they are only worth about $150, but I'd be more than happy to sell minus the rack, visor and venetian. Are you wanting both sets of wheels?

I could possibly even arrange to have the beams swapped from car to car, I'd prefer not to, but its another option if you want the car fairly stock and not narrowed and slammed!?!?

bugboymatt ·

What ya reckon the Oval would need to get through a rwc ?

dvs_vw ·

As a seller its harder to get an RWC for a car like this(mainly because of the lowering), but once you own the car most places will probably do one because they know you are the new owner and won't come back to them when something goes wrong, but being a seller they won't do it based on the fact that they have no idea who the buyer is and if they'll come back to have a go at them for doing the RWC in the first place....if that makes sense?

Pete at Custom Off Road/Custom Vee Dub would probably look after you if you bought it, you'd probably have to wind the adjusters up front an rear just for his piece of mind, maybe fix the oil leak in the box and patch up the split in the side of the hood. Being that it will only be a rego transfer(as you are in QLD) and there won't be a need for an inspection as if you were going for new rego, no one needs to see the car and it'd be quite an easy process!

mat54 ·

hi
sorry to interupt your thread
but if all the accessories arent wanted i am happy to take them of your hands including the mags....

veery nice looking bugs you got there by the way

steff

aussietanker ·

Hi Michael ....

very nice cars ... i would really like to buy them both!

is the pastel green of the 55 the original color ... could you please elaborate what is meant when you say the doors are warped ... and what do you think it would take to get this car up and running (without doing a full resto i mean) ..

regards
A|T

aussietanker ·

and is the 55 body on the original floor pan?

regards
A|T

dvs_vw ·

Aussietanker - by doors, I mean the door trims, not the actual doors, if you have a look at the photo of the interior you can see what I mean, they are just a little wobbly along the edges!

The green is not the original paint, someone has re-done it at some point, but its based on the original colour, the dash and under the roof liner show the original colour.

The car is up and running perfectly, I could drive it everyday if I wanted/needed to, it realistically doesn't need anything at all!!! And yes, its the original body on the original pan.

1916baja ·

If i had to choose one i don't know what i'd do! they are both awesome!

dvs_vw ·

Bump

just keeping it up there as I really need one of these cars gone soon!

bugboymatt ·

They are both very nice rides. I wonder how much cashola is in the secrect account !!

dvs_vw ·

just bumping this back up again

prices are negotiable, and seeing as these are probably more a style suited to southerners(especially the '55) I'll kick in towards the transport if someone from interstate wants either one!

h ·

gee thats a shame you have to sell 1 man
now what will nick drive on vw runs.. haha

tinman ·

If my company car gets taken off me I'll drop you a call. Still can't decide which one to get though.... ❓

Bump

dvs_vw ·

Ok, I've decided I might let both of the cars go now, I think I'm happy having had a go with a nice original beetle, and also slammed ratty oval, and I think I'd like to pool the $'s together after my holiday from both of these and buy a nice originally restored early KG or maybe an early square, something abit different to the beetles and just slam it and cruise.

So I'm looking to sell both now for those who might be keen, have had a few interested in the '59, but no sale yet.

As for the '55, I'm happy to strip almost everything off it, and sell it as a registered(til june 08), drivable car, but again, you'll have to sort out your own RWC which most places should pass it if they know you have bought the car to keep and drive. It would make a really good base for your own style of rat, or even an excellent, solid and complete base for a resto of an early oval. The only things that will have to stay is the 2in narrow, dropped spindles and the adjustable rear plates(unless you have alternatives and want to swap them over and we can adjust the price) as above - $6250ono - less $250 if you don't want the rego.

yeppo1975 ·

mate what would u take for cash on the 59? pm me cheers shane

bond ·

i dont think he takes credit card.................

Calcool ·

PM Sent???

dvs_vw ·

no PM from you, sorry....try again maybe?

Pumba ·

I noticed you got your 55 on ebay,Whats your plans with the roof rack????? cheers shane.

dvs_vw ·

Just seeing what happens with ebay, thought I may aswell give it a go aswell as here.

As for the roof rack, dunno, I'll wait and see if and when the cars sell.

dvs_vw ·

On another note, I must say I'm a little disappointed in the amount of serious interest these 2 cars have generated, plenty of quenstions and lots of interest, but nothing serious yet. Back when I bought them both I was quickly on them and first in a line of many to get them, and I was offered cash higher than what I paid for both straight after I got them.....what happened to those poeple?

Are they priced too high? (I wouldn't have thought so for what they are)

Are people in QLD not ineterested in 2 rare and quite unique looking beetles for up here?

Are southereners worried about transporting them?

ic99cc ·

do you have any clue of transport costs to sydney?

dvs_vw ·

It cost me approx $800(from memory) to get the '59 from Melbourne to Brisbane, metro suburbs, so I'd have to assume it would be a few hundred less than that.

Perhaps ring a few companies, like TNT etc and get a few quotes, they do it over the phone with a few quick questions.

Did you get my reply to your question on ebay.....I'm guessing so seeing as you have found the thread here!?!?

rgvlee ·

I love the 59. Bit too far away for me though.

Cheers

L

ic99cc ·

yeah, thanks for getting me on to this, only fairly new to the vw clan, this site is great!!! now i know what i will be doing with my spare time that i don't have. i'm trying to convince the old man to get this for me and i'm gunna keep trying. from the wife...

dvs_vw ·

another quick bump

and a slight price drop on the '55's original sale prices

'55 complete as pictured in first post - $8000 still slightly negotiable

and again, the price can be reduced in price by removing certain items, like wheels etc

this car is on ebay aswell for anyone interested!

dvs_vw ·

Ok, I have taken a deposit on the '59, so it is sold, pending payment of course.

But the oval is still up for grabs.

dvs_vw ·

Just to let all of those people who were interested in the oval know, the car has reached its reserve on ebay and will be selling via ebay. It is being sold pretty much bare on ebay, but the suspension stays obviously. So some of the bits and pieces may be up for grabs later in the week like the BRM's, rack, visor, venetian etc, depending on what I decide to do and what I will part with.

dvs_vw ·

'59 is sold and gone to a good home down the Gold Coast.

'55 has been sold via ebay, now pending payment.

Thanks for all the interest, some parts off the '55 will soon be up for grabs on here, depending on wether or not the winning bidder wants any of it.

dvs_vw ·

Ok, well the ebay winning bidder doesn't seem to exist, zero feedback, fake name and no contact, so the 55 is back up for grabs at the prices already listed, however I'm still pretty negotiable!

It will be relisted on ebay as of Monday, however I'm happy to sell it prior to then through here for anyone keen.

Thanks
Michael

Kuchster ·

I'd be interested if i had the cash, well i am interested, but have no cash.

I also think it may be a bit of a bad time to sell stuff as no body has cash atm, paying off credit cards from christmas etc.

Every business you talk to is dead atm, struggling to survive.

A little advice would be (if possible) keep it for a while, maybe around april time try again.

Interest rate gone up too, im paying $50 a week more due to the last few interest rate rises.

Kuch

kroozzn63 ·

kuch hit the nail on the head im sold up and no cash only have my t4 dualcab to swap or sell

dvs_vw ·

My business isn't dead....maybe its a southern thing....I know a good way around avoiding the interest rate hikes, go fixed for 3-5 years, not an issue then...until it becomes unfixed🤪

People have cash, it had 85 watchers on ebay and 5 serious bidders, I guess they'll have to have another go and if anyone with 0 feedback bids this time, I'm getting their bids revoked!

Otherwise, it can sit under a cover for a few months and I'll try again around when you suggest.

1958kafer ·

Hi, how much for the BRM's without tyres delivered to Adelaide?

dvs_vw ·

I'm not even thinking about selling bits off it until the car is gone minus those bits.....and the BRM's will be sold with the tyres, not stripping them off!

Pastit ·

1958kafer wrote:Hi, how much for the BRM's without tyres delivered to Adelaide?

How about without the wheelnuts? 🤓 Or maybe take the paint off the rims, how much then?😂 What about if you just let the tyres down, how much to ship to Darwin?🙅

i just wish i could get close enough to check it out or could get some detailed photos of our favourite "know nasty" areas before it hits evilbay again...............😢

daimo - did you get my pm?

yeah mate, thanx for that, appreciated..........

dvs_vw ·

Dumone, PM sent, I'm trying to accomodate your needs, and am happy to oblige within regards to helping prior to relisting it on eGay as I like your idea of what you plan to do with it....something I would have liked to do. So have a read and give me a call to discuss.

hellbugged ·

yeah one back at you, i think i'm almost paranoid schitzo at the mo🤪...................for sure a great rat that certainly is as solid as you claim by accounts of my research.

someone grab it to put me out of my cyco state of mind changes...........i need to sleep again!😵‍💫

i look at it with the brms and think, hmmm some fuchs and a phat 1776 would work, but then my time is minescule and youthful abandonment creeping away........

whoa is me🥲

I carn't help but think rebuild and respray in a nice deep gloss black with full chrome and blood red interior.

dvs_vw ·

Just giving this another bump to get it back to the top for a couple of days before the oval goes back on ebay on Monday, just to see if anyone here is keen prior to that?

dvs_vw ·

still got the oval, and I'm not to sure why....I'd have thought a complete and pretty original(apart from bolt ons) 54/55 oval would be wanted by many......2000+ thread views, someone must want this car!

dvs_vw ·

Ok, the oval is now relsited back on ebay, the starting bid is lower, as is the reserve price, its a little bit under what I want, but I'd like the car gone prior to the rego being up for renewal in April! Good luck!

Dasdubber ·

Best of luck with the sale Michael - it is a nice solid car with heaps of character.....like any car more than 40 years old, one can't expect perfection but all the "hard to repair areas" like the front wheel well, both a- and b-pillars, all roof gutters etc are really nice. I'm sure it would make a great addition to someone's stable!
Alan

dvs_vw ·

Thanks for that Alan, I should have added that if anyone wanted a 2nd opinion from an unbiased person and someone in the know to ask you, especially seeing as you have had a look by yourself for a 3rd independant party!

Airfare, petrol, maybe one night's accom in Sawtell or Coffs on the way. Easy!

bumpsies...

dvs_vw ·

the oval now has just over 1 day left on ebay....however its not at its reserve yet, which I don't understand, it was $1000+ more than it currently is last time around and with the same amount of sticky beaks watching it.....hopefully it sells this time!😎

dvs_vw ·

well another ebay failure, won't be trying that again, what a waste of time and money x2.

92 people watching, 90 of which were just being nosey parkers I'd imagine....sigh, if only the fake bidder from last time didn't bid, it would have fetched a decent amount....gee I'd love to be able to find out who it was!!!!

anyway, still on the market.....$5500 gets you the oval with nothing on it, a bare, stock, running oval, still with all the lowering and narrowed beam etc though and 5 weeks rego for a QLD'er(no RWC though, and not negotiable)......come get it!

bond ·

shame man. for such a straight and solid car. goodluck

nick

LotsaDub ·

Why no RWC? What's wrong with it?

Pity about eBay, but I'm sure it'll go soon.

LotsaDub ·

Ah ... just realised that my last post could be taken the wrong way. I wasn't trying to be rude, it's just that not knowing what it'll take to make the 55 road worthy is a bit tough for a potential buyer. It would be helpful knowing what sort of work and money over and beyond the initial $5,500 it'll take to make it road worthy is really what I was asking.

Sorry if it came over all wrong. I understand that it's been a frustrating process for you, but I think just stating that you're not prepared to get a RWC - (and not explaining why) - could send the wrong message.

Hope you get the result your after. Lots of luck.

dvs_vw ·

To answer your first question, I've quoted myself from page 1, and I think I explained myself well back then.
dvs_vw wrote:As a seller its harder to get an RWC for a car like this(mainly because of the lowering), but once you own the car most places will probably do one because they know you are the new owner and won't come back to them when something goes wrong, but being a seller they won't do it based on the fact that they have no idea who the buyer is and if they'll come back to have a go at them for doing the RWC in the first place....if that makes sense?

and realistically, those things in bold are about all you'd need to get an RWC, but I don't know how tough your RWC guy is!

Where are you located? Are you interested in the vehicle?

hmmmmm, recently joined, 2 posts(only in my thread too), no profile info, reminds of a recently joined, zero feedback, non paying ebayer, you wouldn't happen to be waran10000 as an alias on ebay would you?😠

LotsaDub ·

1. My fault for not reading your original post properly, and yes you did explain it well. My only excuse is that I've been going straight to the last post to follow along with the whole sad story and had forgotten your original post. To be honest, there has been so many unfortunate twists in the saga, that I wasn't sure what you've taken off, left on or fixed.

2. Yes I'm a newbie to the forum, but not to Volkswagens.

3. No I'm not the eBayer that you so rightly have it in for.

4. I'd love to buy your car, but unfortunately I don't currently have the available funds. If it's still around in a month or so (I hope it's not for your sake), I'd very strongly think about it - (got too many cars as it is though, and not sure how the wife would react to another one!)

5. I find it interesting, and a bit disturbing that just because I'm new to the forum, haven't posted before and haven't bothered to add a profile as yet - that you immediately assume that I'm some sort of a-hole! Do you also think that because I'm new to the forum that I know nothing about cars - let alone Vw's? I think this says more about you than it does of me.

6. I live in the northern suburbs of Brisbane, but hale from the Canberra region. I joined the forum to find out what's happening in the VW community in this neck of the woods. I've owned 12 Dubs in my 30 plus years of driving and have been out of the "fold" for some time now. My intention is to get back into it in a month or two - and I've been looking at all Type 1's that are on the forum. When I get a car, I will post all about it on the forum. Oh yes, I won't be buying anything off eBay - I'm just not that brave.

7. I understand that you've been disappointed about the "Non Sale" of your 55, but taking it out on me just because I'm new isn't called for. IMHO.

As I've mentioned in my previous post, I wish you luck with your sale and any and all future VW adventures.

dvs_vw ·

LotsaDub wrote:3. No I'm not the eBayer that you so rightly have it in for.
Thats ok, I didn't assume you were, but I thought I'd ask.....not that you'd say if you were, I wouldn't expect anyoen to own up to being that shithouse! 🙅

Don't take it to heart, it just seemed suspiciously like the whole ebay root around all over again with no info etc(yes I'm abit touchy over it all), and just saying "pity about ebay" got me going......bloody ebay, never sell anything on there!!!!.....but on the other hand, where have I said that I assume you know nothing about cars?

Sounds great, unfortunately the scene up here aint like what it seems to be down south.....if you are into that style anyway....which I am!

yep I get the message....again I apologise....I'm on the hunt for the prick that stuffed me around....although I'll never find him, the thought of it is keeping me sane!

Thanks, and same to you!

On another note, the car is kinda on hold for someone, pending a deposit!

LotsaDub ·

I don't blame you for being pissed about the eBay stuff, we recently bid on and won a eBay Video Camera auction. The seller had a great rep and all seemed good. So we sent off the bucks and, well you've probably guessed already, but no Camera has arrived at our humble abode. 😬 We've been through all the steps eBay provide to settle this thing - but to no avail. eBay say they can't do anything else to help, so we have submitted an official complaint through the NSW Fraud Squad, (the seller is somewhere in Sydney), but realistically I doubt we'll ever see the camera or the cash again. So eBay is now off our favourites from now on.

I appreciate you getting back to me, and all is cool. Good news about the pending deposit, I really hope it goes through ok. On the other hand, I hope it doesn't for a month or so - I should have the bucks by then! 😀

Have a great Easter, and hope to see you on the road sometime.

dvs_vw ·

deposit taken, so the car is sold pending final payments.
