Camo's 1961 Beetle makeover - Finally registered

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/67570/camos-1961-beetle-makeover-finally-registered

Camo ·

Hi all,

Only new to VW and this site and thought I would put up a couple of photos of my 1961 Beetle project so far. Just been stripping her down, cleaning and collecting parts (have heap more new parts then in photos). This is my mate sitting in the car down at Albury, where I picked it up from.

bond ·

nice man. keep the pics coming as you progress!@

nick

Camo ·

Nothing great, but here she is ready for the trip to the sand blasters tomorrow (not using sand). Only a little bit of overhang at the rear of the ute 😏

Camo ·

Wasn't happy with the floor pan preparation and have rubbed it back and primed again, awaiting more rubbing 🙁 Also a photo of my chromed pedals I just got back.

split09 ·

was that the car on ebay?

Camo ·

Dont think so. I bought it last year (November) from down near Victoria. It was advertised on carsales.com at the that time.

Kev

Camo ·

The finished painted floor pan, painted it today.

Camo ·

Just a couple of photos to show what stage I'm up to with the floor pan. Also, I got the body back today from the sand blasters and have a little bit of work ahead of me.

Camo ·

Q) What do you get when you spend stacks of money and get your car sand blasted.

A) A realisation that you will now be spending even more money on your car.

As per usual, old paint, bog etc covers up heaps and I now have another big task ahead of me. When I first saw the rust I thought sh#t, but now I have had time to think I am not overwhelmed as I first was and am not overly worried.

This is my first resto as asked by MC Griffin Bug and I am trying my best and learning more as I go. Well, now I will be learning more about rust repairs and plan on this car being full steel when I'm finished.

As I said in my last thread the car resto will slow down a bit now, but not my work load, only the finishing time. This is not due to loss of interest, but all the extra work I will be now doing. But I think if you are going to do something, do it right the first time (if you can afford it 😀 )

Now for the photos and there is more rust than what I have just shown here

frank2112 ·

The rust doesn't look too bad form the photos. I guess it depends on what you find when you start repairing it. This car is coming along very quickly. I love that floorpan. Gives me some ideas for my next project.

Dasdubber ·

Looking great - pan is looking sweet and if that is the worst of the rust you've pictured, then happy days! (trust me)
Al 😵‍💫

bond ·

has that just been blasted? or has it a grey etch primer on it already?!

nick

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Bare metal there.

OZ Towdster ·

Looks like the blasters in Sydney are dam site faster than a certan Brisbane mob hey Mr Bond.
Your work is looking great to date keep it up and you'll end up with a very nice ride , I hope you have got some primer on that body by now or the humidity alone will soon have it looking like a VERY rusty mess.

Andrew

Camo ·

Thanks all for the input, and I have seen a video of a lot worse repaired so I dont feel to bad. As said, there is other rust but not really any worse than what I have shown. The blaster did spray with etch primer, sorry LIFE IN THE LOW LANE. Have been thinking about putting in 2 new heater channels and am confident with doing the job, my only concern is door alignment as I have body off floor and I think its easier to stuff this area up.

Cheers, Kevin

maximilian ·

nice man

OZ Towdster ·

Doing a heater channel replacement is far easier now than later let me tell you.
A few pointers for the job would be as follows.
1. Take plenty of acurate measurements and double check everything
2. Ensure body is sitting level and square
3. Weld in tempary braces to hold the base of the b pillars in place so as they cannot flex sideways in the absence of the heater channell.
4. Only cut out the second side when the first side is completely finished
5. Make a tringular jig up that bolts to both hinge mounting point and also bolts to the striker area ensuring that it is a neat tight fit and this should eliminate any door fitting problems.
Now just have fun and post us plenty of pics.

Andrew

Joel ·

be thankfull ur not in the UK

ur bug would be classed as rust free over there

nearly every bug over theres routine maintaince involves replacing the entire bottom 6" of the car

so many ppl i know there from VZi do entire quarter panel replacements

Camo ·

Holly sh#t, my car is in great shape compared to those last ones. That makes me feel better, thanks.

And 'OZ Towdster', thanks for the tips.

Kevin

Camo ·

Small update. Now have the 2" narrowed beam on. Cut down my own springs and redrilled them and you can get away with adjusting your own tie rods right down, not needing to buy new ones. Also you will see my new rear brake rotor and caliper (only one fitted so far).

Kev

Camo ·

Another day and a little more work. Sorted out the brakes and now have them fitted for the last time (I hope). Had to do modifications to front and rear brake kits to get them all to line up etc.

Camo ·

Hi all,

Got the car in getting rust repairs done and thought I would show you a quick photo of the work and will update as they come. In the repaired photo, still needs cleaning up, but you get the idea.

To this

Boozo ·

Very nice, love the pan, so shiny

Camo ·

Just a few more photos of the rust and panel repairs. The more I see it the more I think of how the budget has been blown right out. If anyone is thinking about doing a resto rather than just buying something already done, take my advice just buy something already done.

Again, these repairs obviously still need to be finished off properly.

Cheers, Kevin

Camo ·

Well, things have been a bit slow the last couple of months and not much happened. Took 2 weeks leave from work to get some done and my 4 year old ended up with tonsillitis, so I looked after her the first week. Then at the start of the 2nd week I stuffed my back and have a bulging disk. Ended up taking another 2 weeks off work sick leave and no work done. Put doors in to get over sized pins fitted, was told a week and it has now been 3 weeks. Not happy with their service.

Anyway, just a photo to show you were I'm up to and what arrived today. I'm excited (as big Kev would say) with the arrival so thought I would add to my post. Hopefully over the next couple of months there will be some big changes.

Kevin

Bizarre ·

Bloody hell - this is nice work 👍

bond ·

boost guage??? hehe

how did you get the front clip so straight???

coming along mate. awesome.

nick

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

I know what a buldging disc in your back is all about mate. Have had one since the week before easter and it still isn't right.

Mick058 ·

looking good Kev, sorry, i rang out of time for the photos - will try and get some tonight - hopefully ill be able to take her out for a spin tonight.

Camo ·

bond wrote:boost guage??? hehe
Well, wishful thinking and I have a plan for the future. I thought whilst I was ordering the other gauges I would just get this so its there when the time comes👍 Now I just need to finish the car and convince the wife that I need more power😏
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE wrote:I know what a buldging disc in your back is all about mate. Have had one since the week before easter and it still isn't right.
Yes, the back is taking longer than I thought to get better and all I want to do is work on the car. I have another week off at the end of September for my wedding anniversary, I'm sure the wife wont mind if I work on the car instead of her 😂 I can go from one vw bonnet to the next 👍

Kev
.

Mick058 ·

Hey Kev, can you PM me your email - got those photos for you.

Camo ·

Its been a while since I posted any photos as after the back getting better I have had the lazy bastard syndrome. I need to really pull my finger out and get stuck into finishing the body and getting it sprayed. Anyway, here are two photos as of yesterday.

Hope you like the wheels half as much as I do, I spent about 2 months searching and trying to find wheels to suit my offset requirements (still didn't) for the 4 wheel disc brakes I have on her. Don't worry about the height/angle in the second photo, I hadn't adjusted the back suspension yet.

Kev

[/img]

[/img]

trickysimon ·

Those wheels are awesome 👍

Mick058 ·

looking the goods - frig what size rubber??? 8s or 9s on the front???

vwsteve ·

keep etch primer in a gun and spray it over the bare steel everytime you leave it sit mate or you will create a bigger job for yourself, trust me, little effort big saving of surface rust coming through later, good work, keep it up🙂

StenGuns ·

Looking Good Kev.. Keep it up..

Camo ·

Mick058 wrote:looking the goods - frig what size rubber??? 8s or 9s on the front???
In the photo is actually my two rears on the left side only and they are 18x8". The front two are getting modified down to 7" this week. As I said, it was bloody hard to find something to bolt straight re offsets on unless I went a 3 piece wheel like Simmonds. But that would have made it 2.5 times dearer to buy than buying new wheels and having them modified.

REXY - The whole body is etched primed and it has been like this for near 12 months after blasting. But I appreciate what you are saying and gather you mean where I have been doing some work and rubbed through. Thanks for that.

Cheers, Kevin

Turbo54 ·

Hey Kevin,
Looks great, wheel are nice and should be great once colour goes on. I think I would of left the side mould on the car to compliment the new wheels. Great size wheels for the car too.
Did you go to a ford stud pattern? Did you 2-pack your floor and parts?
T54

Camo ·

Turbo54 - the stud pattern is Chev/Holden and the floor pan is POR15.

Thanks everyone for all your positive feedback.

Kev

Turbo54 ·

Looks great, Any reason you wnet this stud pattern and not ford. I went ford because there is more choice for wheels and offset.
Too late now but it looks great. Do you know what the back space is on them? I have found a set of 17x8's but they are cast and cant be narrowed so I am stuffed for the front as I really wanted 7 or 6" fronts.
I can get them to fit on the back as I have had it narrowed and I have 2" wider guards but the front is stuffed. Where are you getting yours done?
T54

1958kafer ·

Who supplied you the rear guards and what is the fit like?

Camo ·

Just typed a big reply and lost it. Pissed off now, so this is the short version.

Turbo54 - Place I bought rotor kits from only did Porsche (130x5), chev and 4 stud. I did porsche and chev to double options in case I went Fusch wheels. No point telling you my offset sorry, depends on your hub setup. You will need to put a wheel on and work it out. I used a clubsport commodore wheel. Neale wheels is doing the mods to the wheels - Greenacre area. He is cutting 1" out of the wheel well area to change 8" to 7".

1958kafer - George as Classic Vee Dub. Seem to fit ok, dont have anything to compare to.

Kev

STOCK ·

HEY CAMO LOOKS AWSOME MATE
NOW THE REST OF THE QUALITY HAS TO MATCH THAT AWSOME FLOORPAN
WAS THE PAN CLEARED AFTER THE POR15
OR IS IT JUST STRAIGHT POR15 & THATS IT???

68AutoBug ·

You will need a guard dog if You are going to Use the late 1960-61 Very Rare tail lamps...

[those tail lamps were also used in Italy- I wonder how many are still over there?? Lee ]

or buy some of those VERY expensive screws that are for sale on E Bay from the UK...
Tamper proof... or silastic the lenses on... lol

cheers

LEE

JVLRacing ·

i like wat i see ...nce😎

Camo ·

Check out my latest purchases over the last week or so. And these are just spares, as I still have another set I bought over 12 months ago tucked away waiting to be fitted. Or I should say when the car is finished 😂

Kev

Camo ·

Well I have finally had a step forward after what seems like the longest time. Am currently on 4 weeks long service with the intention of getting some work done to the car, although I am in the last week of it.

Have worked on the car 15 days out of the last 17 days, not that they were full days. Probably only 5-6 hours a days, sometimes less, pending family requirements. Have to down tools and pick my daughter up every day from school and then look after her until the wife get home about 6pm, so the day finishes for me about 2pm.

This is my first time at doing a resto/make over and I cant believe how much preparation work is required in getting panels smooth. And I dont even know if I'm doing a good enough job. If I had to pay $50 (cheap rate) an hour labour for what I have done over the last year or so, it would be over $15000 just in labour cost.

Anyway, enough talking (writing) here are a couple of photos. Its only etch primer today and will be doing high fill tomorrow if all goes to plan (usually is doesn't).

Kev

Flintstones ·

Kev, I know your pain and dilemma....no matter how much your good intentions are to move ahead with the car, things just always seem to pop up from out of no where!!
But it's looking the goods, and the wheels look really trick on it 👍👍
Cheers
Dino

Mick058 ·

Kev and Dino, come on lads! 2 cars i can't wait to see around town.

Looking good Kev!

Dino, any latest work on your car! About time for an update wouldn't you say?

Flintstones ·

No work as yet Mick, but lets not hijack Camo's thread.

My external drives crashed with all my build pics, once i get it sorted I'll revive my build thread

cheers
D

68AutoBug ·

Great work Kev
Will You be going to the VW Nationals in May??

I doubt if You will be driving Your beetle...

I tried for a number of years to try to be there...

but Only made it last year in My Beetle..

I stilll look around to see whats for sale..
I believe that the parts have all gone in price...

I am going to buy an SVDA distributor from the US.
they are timed to suit a PICT2 or 3 or 4...
Fairly expensive... but the say Your engine runs cooler and with better fuel economy too

cheers

LEE

Camo ·

Well, another 2 days work and a little more to show for it. Finally got some high fill primer on there (and no its not going to be white). As I said the other day, shit this is a lot of work. Just did 3 weeks preparation work and finally got to lay some paint (sorta) down for all the hard work done. Still not sure if I have done a good enough job on the prep work, but got sick of fixing little dents. Every time you think you got it right, another dent or blemish would jump out at you 😬

Mick058 - I would also love to see this on the road but dont hold your breath and I hope the finished product doesn't let me or you down.

68autobug (Lee) - yes, I will definitely be at the show. But I think you may be right in that I will not be driving the bug there, much to my disappointment.

Now the new photo update.

Kev

mrboombastic ·

I can't wait to see the finished product, this looks really good. Had you done much in the way or spray work in the past before you started project?

Camo ·

Hi mrboombastic,

No, I had never sprayed before this car. But you must remember, this is only the primer and high fill primer. I will not be spraying a final coat, as I will leave that up to an experienced sprayer. Haven't done anything to the car since my last entry.

But I have just bought an engine, although not planed. Was going to use the 1500/1600 single port that came with the car until this came up for sale the other day. Obviously I will be removing the buggy type exhausts to fit it into my Beetle and fitting new tinware. This is a video of the quick start up today to test engine.

Kevin

vw54 ·

hey thats a TOP video nothe dulcet tones of straight cut gears ( yuk )

who were those mask men

Hi Dave,

I have been off work now for over 2 months sick. I have only managed about 4-5 hours in this time. So to answer your question, No 🙁

Been a bit hard to get motivated to do anything of late.

Cheers, Kev

VWFREAK ·

Dam, sorry to hear about the health👎 Sucks being off work and not being able to play. The rides coming along nicely 😁

Special Air Service ·

Kev,

How much $ was the wheel narrowing per wheel if you dont mind me asking? & is it road legal to have it done?

Send me a PM if you dont want to get into it here.

Bad Luck with the health problems Kev..
having mental health issues here...
which lets Me work for a bit on My beetle every 2nd day...

that engine sounds nice... alternator..twin carbs.
shame about the chrome.. lol

because of health issues Mine took 9 years Kev....
instead of 6 months...

But once they are on the road, and you can just go and drive it whenever you want... is great... lol

it took Me a few months to put My car off the road while I replaced the inlet manifold then muffler was split again...
I cahanged my oil cooler set up... then My Son gave Me a set of GENIE extractors... I just had to find a muffler for it... which I did from mick motors..
I also made up some new spark plug leads and fitted new spark plugs.. suppression leads..
so Hopefully I will be back on the road by the weekend..
freezing weather & My heater works great too...

all the best Kev

It is illegal to narrow any CAST wheel in all states of Australia. I know it can be done but it is not allowed.

so... where is the update!

Camo ·

Re the two above comments, I was also asked by a few people today at Boris' Picinic how it was coming along. Well, it's like this - No work done to it in the last 6 months. Will try to get motivated and get some done soon, but no promises!

Kev

cam070 ·

Dude, where are the updates. if you are looking for motivation, just walk into your garage. That'd be enough to motivate me.

Camo ·

cam070,

I fully understand what you are saying and maybe I need to let a few people know as to why I haven't done a great deal lately.

I will try to keep it brief and I hope people understand the same as they did in this other link - DEPRESSION CLICK HERE

I have been a copper for 13 years (not many on here know this) and during this time you see a lot of things but mainly a lot more things that you dont want to see or deal with. You have a real understanding of how bad things can be and what type of world we really live in. It all starts with your training and you are trained to see and look for things that others dont see on a daily basis. My wife says after seeing the way that I am, that she wouldn't want to see life through my eyes. Even typing this I am starting to sweat (some may understand).

In simple terms I am suffering from anxiety and depression and been off work for 7 months and still have problems getting out of bed sometimes in the morning. This is not to say that I cant still get out and have a laugh, but getting motivated to do things is the hard part.

So I hope you and others may understand why not much has been done in the last 7 months. Its not that I dont want it finished (I do), its just hard for me to get started. I think in the other link I posted, might help others understand (not saying that you dont).

My 5 year old has even asked Santa for the car to be finished for Christmas. Unfortunately, this is one thing I can not give her 🙁

Regards, Kev

EDIT 4.30pm: Just a quick update, this is how I hope it will look. I have photo shopped this car with my wheels and brakes, running board and the little chrome bit for the 1/4 window. Now I need to work towards the real thing.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Hi Kev,
Due to the same problem - Depression - it took Me 9 years to get My beetle on the road.. and its still not finished although
road registered...

For many years if i went near My Beetle My brain would go berserk ... for no real reason...

so, I know how difficult it can be Kev

I hope You can beat it in time...

1303Steve ·

Hi Kev

I've had on & of vertigo for a few years, although different to your problem I can relate to it.

When faced with huge car tasks like yours and mine I sometimes find it helps to do fun small things that can be achieved in a short time, then after a while these small things add up and the goal will be getting closer.

Chin up buddy, if you ever need me to come over and drink all your beer let me know, oh and offer some advice LOL

Steve

Camo ·

Thanks 71, Lee and Steve for your thoughts and wishes. But I'm sure Steve if you came over that bloody Birchall bloke would be here too and I dont want that lol.

Actually, Dave has already offered and I appreciate the help that members of this VW community have offered. Maybe one day I might get to a point where I will gladly have you over for some advice, beer and a chin wag 🙂

Thanks, Kevin

Kev.. You're a decent bloke mate.. I'm sure people close to you know that and you should also know that yourself.. Take whatever time you need and put your hand up when you want some help.. You will be flooded with people wanting to help.. All decent blokes (and gals) too.. (yes, including Birchall)..

I'm at my factory waiting for a buyer to arrive to see my beetle.. I'm selling it because I want to finance something else.. The price will be half what the build cost.. Them's the breaks.. we don't do it for financial return.. We just love metal that moves!! And just for some inspiration.. Here is the girl.. Detailing her at the moment for possibly the last time.. What beautiful curves...

Well guys, I have a little update and one that has got me very excited. I have just had the engine running and it sounds great. I am one very happy little camper (not camp :-).

I had been thinking about turbo'ing and fuel injecting one day, but after starting this engine up and listening to it, it sounds like its got balls. I have no idea of what HP she will have, but it brings a smile to my face listening to the engine.

In this video (only on my phone) you seem to hear the straight cut gears more than anything, but I can assure you when you are standing next to it the exhaust is loud.

Now I have to get to work and start on the car body again, as I have done sweet F.A over the last 12 months. I hope I can stay on this high for a little while as I feel great at the moment and want to finish the car now. In reality there is still a fair bit of work to do. First job is to finish prep work and get the car painted.

Catch ya later, Kev

NOTE: Yes, I know the exhaust is on wrong. Just had to do this to run it as need a spacer made for flange area as muffler hits rocker cover when on correctly (due to stroked engine).

1303Steve ·

Sounds sweet, now get your finger out and get the car finished, I should talk.

Paulc1964au ·

Excellent and loved the thumbs up at the end lol, when are you planning on installing into the bug?

Camo ·

Thanks guys. I have about 10k worth of parts collected (quite - the wife might hear), plus the engine. So as soon as I get the body painted the assembly will start.

Kev

Paulc1964au ·

Are you painting the bug yourself or getting it professionally done?

Camo ·

Paulc,

If you look at page 2 of this thread, you will see that I have done the etch primer and high fill primer to all the hanging panels at this stage in my garage at home. These were done in February 2009 and I haven't really done much since then. I have carried out this work with the help of a friend whom is a spray painter. I am yet to spray the body, but then it will be going into an oven and being painted by an experienced sprayer.

Kev

Paulc1964au ·

I think thats a wise decision to get it professionally painted after spending so much time and effort on the prep works.

Can't wait to see the finished result

Camo ·

Well guys, I have this small update and especially since there are a few people on my back to get the car finished. As you will have seen on page 3 of how I want the car to look, the first small amount of paint has been laid. It's a 3 layer pearl (I think that's what he said) basically the same colour as the Ford Turbo XR5.

This is all that has been painted so far to give me an idea of how it will look. The rest of the car will start after these school holidays and will update as things happen.

Can only show you so many shots of the same panel. Dont want you to get sick of it already 😂

Cheers, Kev

hellbugged ·

👍.....great news and good to see!

HappyDaze ·

That'll look good, Kev - I've seen a Ford that colour. Isn't Ford a four-letter word, starting with F❓

Cheers, Greg

AUSSIE_MICK ·

Hi all,

Greg, yes Ford is a four letter word beginning with F - Go to the top of the class 😀

Mick, you could have used an F word also and said, Fark that is bright I need sunglasses 😏

Dave, Yes it is orange. Are you partial to the colour orange 😉

Camo ·

AT LAST (not yelling, just very excited).

Well guys the process has begun. Here is the first few photos of what is happening and I couldn't be happier. It has taken me 3 years to get to this stage and also a lot has happened in my life over these 3 years.

Now to all those that have been prodding and pushing me over the last couple of years, thanks.

Kev

now comes the hard part, putting it back together with out scratching the paint. 😊

Camo ·

Well guys and gals it has taken 3 years this month, but the body (not mine) has finally got some colour on it. I am yet to get out there and see it in person, but I am rapt with the clour in these following photos that my mate sent me. Nice and bright 😎

Thanks for the positive comments all.

Sorry Bizarre, but I will have to trim it or I might scratch the black shinny floor. But I agree it would look hot with the bright orange insides and a black shinny floor, maybe I can remove carpets when entering the VW nationals 😀 Also I didn't prepare the inner B & C panels well enough for a finished painted look after installing 3 point seat belts in the front and rear.

Lee, it will be original flipper windows for this baby.

Look forward to just getting the body back on the pan.

Cheers, Kev

My baby came home today and I am very happy with the result. Looks best in person and in the sunlight.

Whilst driving home I noticed a lot of people looking in my direction and people walking along the footpath turning around as I drove past and kept looking and the thing is that I don't think they were looking at my tow car 🥲 which is really a great sign 😂

Mick,

AUSSIE_MICK ·

Hey Paul you been missing all the action lately.

Camo ·

Another small update: I have fitted up my new tandem master cylinder, Volvo reservoir, brake and clutch pedals, new flexible and solid brake lines and now I have brakes that work 🙂

Also just spent $250 buying steel braided fuel hoses and Earl's type connectors just for my delivery and return fuel lines that I have routed through the tunnel and out of the original fuel outlet in the frame horns. The passengers side one is the delivery and I drilled and fitted one to the drivers side for return. This being for future plans of the one day EFI/Turbo. Lot easier to do this now than later on and will save time.

Now my next job is to stick the floor pan seal down and refit the body, something I am very much looking forward to.

Paulc1964au wrote:Cam,

Hi Paul,

I dont want to set myself a date to have it finished by, as then I could rush things and make mistakes or just bad decisions. I basically want to have it on the road as soon as possible as it has been over 3 years since I bought it.

Managed to have fair bit of time today and got stuck into it. The photos should show what I managed to achieve. The pain part is when you have to fit and remove parts, make adjustments and then refit them all over again.

The last photo is showing the 5 piece Kafer Bar I got off Craig Torrens.

AUSSIE_MICK ·

Hey Paul
Just improving the front end ride. Doing it right this time, dropped spindles with lowered & narrowed beam.

Joel ·

Ha! there seems to be an epidemic of orange project beetles in Syd at the moment with the front tyres on arse about 😂

Looking awesome Kev, what you don;t wanna do now is rush the home straight.
I've seen it happen before people get this close and so eager they rush a few things to get it finished

Camo ·

Joel wrote:Ha! there seems to be an epidemic of orange project beetles in Syd at the moment with the front tyres on arse about 😂
Joel,

I was looking at this yesterday when putting them on and got myself confused (not hard to do). I was trying to picture the tyre rotating on the road and having the water escape and I still got it wrong 🤪.

Thanks, Kev.

Joel ·

It was just comical to me cos Steves bug is in almost identical situation at the moment

Directional tyres always have a rotational arrow on the sidewall if you're not sure

Craig Torrens ·

Kev, its probably worth you using an aftermarket cradle (or using a strap kit with the factory cradle) so you have a 'bellhousing strap' to help limit the gearbox movement, this should also be in combination with a mid mount support as well. The K Bar kit will stop the forks flexing, but if the gearbox can still move around on its mounts then you will not get the benefits of the k bars stopping axle tramp.

As others have said, I've also had bad experience with the red mounts...................but the yellow Rhino mounts from CB pereformance have been great in the ragtop.

Camo ·

Joel, its funny as when I looked at Steve's car the other night I thought exactly the same about his front tyres being on wrong and then I went and did the same bloody thing - 'Me Dope' 👍

Craig, I have a mid-mount waiting to pick up from V-Force (note to self to go pick it up) and the only thing about the CB Rhino mounts (which I want) is that it cost more for shipping then to buy them (I had a quote) 😠 CB's shipping prices are ridicules, I would have bought heaps from them if it wasn't for their shipping costs.

Kev

Craig Torrens ·

get them from here..cheaper shipping cost.

Looks great Kev!

Keep it up your nearly there!

Aussie Dubbin ·

Kev, Great bloody resto. Have just read all 6 pages fantastic work looks great. I bet that paint looked amazing first time you saw it on the car. I rember how long it took me sanding and priming and getting to that point where paint was finally going on. Keep up the long hours its paying off.

Can i question you about your brakes. I have recently bought these (exact same) and my car is in a thousand pieces so i want to ask about what you meant when you said they needed a few modifications to make them work??? They look great and i know what you mean about wheels and offsets. I thought there would be plenty of options but the ofset seems to be difficult to match. Have you fitted standard guards Front and rear? are you running long or short axles? I am considering 17x7 (et23 i think) fuchs from classics do you know if they would have worked on your setup? or porsche cookie cutters 15x7 et23. Have you run a bigger master cylinder or anything like that? Are you thinking that these will be strong enough?

Cheers Aaron

Hey Kev,

Nice beetle, what colour is it ? looks like its got alot of pearl in it or is a 3 layer ?

Also where did you get it painted ? i bet it was at a TAFE , spray painting division .... they all look the same even after so many years

lou0060 ·

nice work Kev, read the whole post and credit to you!

Colour is great choice for a Beetle, we have just painted my sons 2 door golf the same colour and tho it's not finished yet looks even better in the sun.

Colour is Ford Mondeo XR5 Magnetic Orange.

Camo ·

Thanks again for the favorable comments and Lou I thought it was a Ford Focus colour called Electric Orange.

I had a visit today by Mick and PaulC so I thought I had better update the little bit to show what they have also seen. They didn't stay long as Mick was in his beautiful oval and there were about 10 drops of rain and he was off 😂

Anyway, although I have been putting a bit of time in on the car it doesn't appear to be much has changed. The motors in and have been making my entire wiring harness from scratch.

Also something that I am going to have to attend to is the ride height. I set up the rear suspension some time ago when the floor pan only had gearbox and the empty body shell on it. I thought I allowed for the weight of the engine and set it up at that time with the rear guard being about 1 inch plus above the tyre. Well today I finally let it down off the stands and its resting on the bump stops 🙁

Also in the photos you can see the huge negative camber of the rear wheels. I'm sure it would look shit hot when the guards are on, but the tyres would wear really bad and would be a bugger of a ride. So I guess more work to be redone (again) on the rear suspension 😬

Again, the photos don't really show the time that has been put into working on the car. Or maybe I'm just really slow 😂

Paulc1964au ·

Was great meeting today and the car looks spectacular can't wait for when it is finished. I am wondering if Mick's 56 is painted with water paint because as soon as there were a few drops we were off lol I have to say though its so cool to be in and his 56 sounds awesome.

Mick has challenged me to put sidewinder exhaust on my rosie lol so guess i am on the lookout for new manifolds and exhaust.

oh Kev start saving I suggested to Mick that in two years we go on a Rod Penrose tour to LA for bugorama.

Was great meeting today

Paul

hellbugged ·

looks great with nice combo of parts giving it the look. credit to your taste and vision for the car i must say.

yes progress will seem slow through this stage, wiring and final finish took me ages and that was just on a rat with no detailing to be done as it went.....but it will come together all of a sudden.

make a list and start crossing off the jobs as they are done to keep the motivation up. pick off a little job when you have a little time and dedicate those big days to the big ones. i like to finish a job to completion as it goes so this attack works well for me.

one notch on the inner spline would see the ride height pretty close to a comprimise i'd say looking at the pictures.

well done!

AUSSIE_MICK ·

10 DROPS OF RAIN = HALF DAY DETAIL!

Hi Kev
it all takes time and a lot of it.....
Making the wiring nice and neat takes a lot of time too...
I made the mistake when i did My wiring, as the tank was out and didn't allow for the wires to go around the tank.. lol

I am in the process of rewiring under the bonnet and in engine bay to make it look better... and cleaner..
I put in a new fusebox and got the wires mixed up.. lol
so, I'm using circuit breakers at the moment for everything..
maybe I should do away with the new fusebox???

My beetle is going better all the time...
I just fitted a new larger oil cooler under the RHS rear guard
only place I could fit it... as the auto gearbox is larger plus ATF hoses etc...
its not directly behind the tyre so it should be OK...

I am looking to find something that will stop stones but not air... lol

Hope to meet you at the nationals this year...

where about in Sydney do You live?

cheers

Jeff, always welcome to drop in and that goes for any other veedubbers out this way.

As you can see by the photos I have been buying a bit of s/s braided hoses and many, many connectors. The hoses and connectors cost me more than the car to buy in the first place 🥲

I love these hoses (not the price) and they are not that hard to make up. Obviously the ones off the rocker covers are for looks only as there will be F.A. pressure in them 😂

Few photos to update, although again it doesn't look like the amount of time that has been put into it.

Kev

Paulc1964au ·

looking awesome is that a ceramic coated sidewinder exhaust i can see?

Also in the 4th photo the hose looks rather short shouldnt there be more free play?

Camo ·

Hi Paul,

yes, ceramic coated heater boxes and stainless sidewinder (muffler still to be fitted). Also, yes this is something I had been thinking about, all depends on how much the motor rocks up and down. Time will tell, or other people with their thoughts 😂

Also I will be putting in sound proofing in the normal places which will be under carpet, roof lining etc - sorry Greg about this music, but I don't wear a helmet when I drive my car like some people 😂😂😂😂😂

Gee Old Timer, I think you may have put me a little to high up the ladder on that quote. But I really appreciate the kind words and also from others on this site.

As with a lot of car makeovers, it was never planned like this at the start. She was going to be redone original colour and even keeping the old 4 wheel drum brakes. I thought I would have it on the road in 6 months maximum and for under $8000 - SHIT, I was wrong on both counts big time (said quietly - as the wife might be listening).

I would be honored to see my car in a magazine, but that still has nothing to do with my build process. All I'm trying to do is build a nice street car that I will be proud of.

I don't think I will make the Nationals as there are so many small jobs still to do that take a lot of time and care. But I wont count it out, even if I take it there near finished on a trailer.

Thanks again, Kevin

Craig Torrens ·

No not me, the car downstairs in the garage 😂😂

I moved the car under it's own power today for the first time in 3 years, I'm excited. I have steep driveway, so I'm glad the brakes worked and it had enough power to get back up the driveway.

Couple of outdoor photos for proof and a little video of the engine running.

AUSSIE_MICK ·

VERY NICE KEV!

Paulc1964au ·

looking awesome can't till you have it on the road so, the 3 of us (Mick) can take our Vw's for a spin although i'll be behind as i have the less power lol but one day well you never know.

DieSchnelleKafer ·

oh so sweet!

1916baja ·

That is absolutely stunning. And it looks like it will go like the clappers to!

vw54 ·

So u had fun with the beading

Camo ·

One more photo from today's efforts. I did also get the passengers side door on!

Good point Mick, sorry about that.

But have you noted that this is the first photo I have been in, in 3.5 years since I stared this build thread and now you know why 😂😂😂😂😂

Kev

HappyDaze ·

Bet I know why this is the first photo that you have been in, Kev.............you are now SMILING.😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Paulc1964au ·

kev,

how is the clearance on the front looks to me it could lower a little more lol

Barnabie ·

The car is looking awesome 👍

I can't wait to see it finished. Good luck.

Kris.

Paulc1964au ·

After seeing the car today and then looking at the start of this thread it is amazing to see the transformation you have done. The car looks so sweet and once all the trimmings are added it is going to really turn some heads.

ian.mezz ·

cool 😊

whathaveidone ·

Had a good look at your car today. Very nice. You have way more patience and attention to detail than me!!!!! Well done
👍

AUSSIE_MICK ·

So kev, have you got your baby back from the trimmers?
We need toe see the interior.

Paulc1964au ·

Yes he does i went down with him on Friday to pick it up, looks great am hoping mine will turn out as good

Great work to everyone who has worked on this car.
It's inspiring me to start my own beetle resto 👍

Craig Torrens ·

so did you end up doing the black and white cow pattern interior ?

AUSSIE_MICK ·

Kevs been quiet lately, too busy making TV appearances

Joel ·

Was wondering if I was the only one who noticed that.

I've got 2 tins of that same colour with the yellow pearl through it I was gonna paint mine in.
Everytime I see your bug Kev I wanna get the spray gun out, then I wash it and find new dents and stone chips and change my mind.

Be sure to park well clear of 4WDs covered in those my family stickers that have lots of kids on them.

Paulc1964au ·

AUSSIE_MICK wrote:Kevs been quiet lately, too busy making TV appearances
Yes he looked very impressive dont you think? but more impressive was the little beetle sitting on top of his monitor

Hi boys,

yeah that was filmed about 3 years ago, didn't you notice I had more hair 😂😂😂😂 For those that are wondering, it was Crash Investigation Unit that was on in Sydney, when I was still in the job.

Craig, no black and white interior but I will have some photos up soon.

Cheers, Kev

kylandpl ·

Kev, after you mentioned your build thread at the club meeting, I thought I would check it out...

Awesome work, Kev! My '61 can be the "before" and your's the "after" ! LOL

Can't wait to see it at a meeting/run one day...you should be very proud of what you've done.

Cheers,
Andrew

Paulc1964au ·

Kev's car is sensational and the new interior looks awesome hopefully Kev will post some photos soon so show everyone.

If I was going to be critical about the car there is one downfall, it is Kev driving it and not me 🙂

Camo ·

Hi Andrew,

thanks for the kind words. It has been a long process as I thought (with original plans) that it would be back on the road in 6 months and as usual, the plan changes along the way and now we are about 3.5 years. Although I didn't work on it for about 1 full year, at one stage.

Paul, are you trying to tease others by letting them know you have had a preview of the interior. Not sure how it will look in photos as it is a dark interior and the flash highlights some areas and not others.

Kev

Paulc1964au ·

Post the photos i took and the ones you sent me today

Flintstones ·

Kev, going off what you've already done, I'm sure it will look great!!
but.....we need pic's😁
Cheers
D

Camo ·

It may just take a bit of time to grow on me and maybe it will look different when outside in the day light. I think I prefer the look of AUSSIE_MICK 's which is basically the same but in black leather.

Maybe I just need to get use to seeing a change, as it has been over 3 years since it has even had a back seat 😂 😂

As I said, the light isn't right or maybe I am just making excuses 🥲

Kev

Craig S ·

From what I can see, I'd say it looks pretty good Kev, I'd be happy with it.

nah that's cool Kev.....always wanted to having matching front and rear seats........never ever got that far

you're doing well, it will be worth all this work i'm sure 👍

cam070 ·

Certainly has all the good stuff going into it

SebastienPeek ·

I really love this interior. Suits the colour of your bug perfectly in my opinion!

Got any photos of the rear luggage area? Get a new sound system installed while you were at it or does that come later?

Hope you're enjoying your beautiful looking beetle!

VDUBXTC ·

SebastienPeek wrote:Got any photos of the rear luggage area? Get a new sound system installed while you were at it or does that come later?
No need for a sound system. There is no better sound then the sound of a pair of webers on a healthy Dak Dak engine at full song 😂

Super1302 ·

i'm with you VDUBXTC yeah my stereo has now been invaded with 48 ida's and elec fuel pump too.🤪
i hope to hear it again.🥲
i like your ride, love the colour and the trick bits too.

Camo ·

What I thought would be 6-7 month body off rebuild/freshen up, turned into a totally different project (as they do) and this November will be 4 years and about $20,000 more than I thought I was going to spend. Keeping in mind, this is with me doing most of the labour.

Anyway, here are a couple of photos as of today. One job today was to modify the wiper arms to suit the new 2 speed wiper motor. It's so close to finished now, I can hardly wait to take her for a spin.

I will get some more photos of her outside in the next few days and post them up.

Kev

Paulc1964au ·

That just looks awesome so what is left on the list to do before it's finished? Also how did you resolve the issue with the running boards?

cnfabo ·

😂😂😂 Do you really think after all this work the handbrake wouldn't work. I just roll the car out and put that in front of the wheel so I can move the car back and forth when need be depending what section of the car I am working on to give me more room.

Kev

trailer it up to VW Warwick Drags and inter it in the show and shine,

Bought this car 4 years ago this month and finally, she's on the road .😁😁😁😁

Had her maiden voyage today, and only a few small things to iron out. I could have said I finally finished my car, but as others have said you never really finish them. How true, I have had future plans for about 2 years now 😂😂😂😂

Anyway, couple of photos with her new plates and my daughter has added Tigger to the rear view mirror has he is the same couloring (look hard, he blends in).

1303Steve ·

Hi Kev

Great news, I thought we might see you Friday night at Harrys.

Steve

Camo ·

Thanks everyone, and yes very good to get the plates on and finally drive a VW for the first time every on the road 😀. Still a few small teething issues to attend to. Need to get wheel alignment and see if I can get some negative camber put into the k/p front end (any suggestions), need to fine tune the engine as there is a little burbling through the exhaust (like when you normally back off) even when just cruising, small oil leak (as they say, it is a vw) and I am surprised about the free play in the steering box considering it was new (I think).

But I guess when a car as been totally stripped down and then put back together over 4 years there will always be a few things to sort out.

Now, just to find the time to drive it 😁

Cheers, Kev

P.S. Photos came out good Paul, considering light was fading 👍

P.P.S. Will have to change my avatar photo now.

ian.mezz ·

cool.
what oil did you put in new steering box.
you may just have to adjust the top screw .

thebullfrog ·

Well, that was the most intersting and worthwhile build thread i have ever read to put it simply.

The car is amazing, the paint looks spectacular and now after 4 years of ups and downs, you can look back it and stand by it and say its your handcrafted machine. Cost to a degree can't outweigh the feeling of doing something yourself.

Well done Kev, an inspiraton to myself and many others.

Jeremy

Kazandmyrtle ·

Hey Kev....what can i say.....Amazing! Just stunning, the amount of work and effort you've put in is truly an inspiration. Well done and enjoy x

Aussie Dubbin ·

Camo have you adjusted the box in place? hard right, quater turn and check lock to lock... if more needed, hard left quater turn and check lock to lock. Should be able to find tight but smooth opperation. do not over tighten. Only small adjustments.

Car looks amazing great Aussie work, fantastic.

Can i ask what MC you are using? i have the same kit.

Cheers

hrastovica ·

What a beauty!!! Love it.

Camo ·

thebullfrog wrote:Well, that was the most intersting and worthwhile build thread i have ever read to put it simply. Jeremy
Thank you, thank you very much. I had never thought about someone enjoying the reading as you have put it. Makes the past four years feel even more worth while.

And thanks to everyone for your favorable comments. As I have said, there were still a few small issues which are mainly taken care of now. But I have a funny feeling after all this, I am going to have to pull the motor out again 😢

I will do some more investigating, but I think it is a rear main oil leak. The thing is, I'm not sure if it due to excess crank case pressure (blow-by) which surprises me with all the breathers I fitted to the engine. If it has to come out, so be it. At least when I sort that out I know it will all be good to just jump in and drive.

Thanks again, Kev.

ONE HAPPY VW BUILDER.... 😂😂

Great looking car Kev...

You can adjust the steering box with the wheels straight ahead using the screw on the top to take play out of it..

I have always used the top screw but I have read where the Large plug underneath should be used..??

the later boxes were all filled with grease...

Steve, I told Ian the only reason the sticker is still there is due to all the power and the front tyres hardly being on the ground 😂😂😂😂😂

Not sure about putting the car around the track, it's a lot of money to lose if it got damaged at all 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and kind words.

As to the above quote, I actually said to many people on the day that I had wished my car was outdoors in the sun as that is what really sets this paint off. Was even hard to tell indoors that it is a 3 layer pearl paint, and not a solid orange colour.

Anyway, I built it to drive and drive it I will. I look forward to seeing other VW's out and about. Make sure you give me a wave or toot when nearby and please excuse me if I forget a name or face as my memory is not what it use to be. But that's another story.

great looking project there Kevin. Looks like lots of $$$ and time spent. I know all about disc bulges as well mate... got one about 4 years back and i still cant work on a car for more than an hour without being in crippling pain. Wow, my build thread had been in hiding for over 12 months and it's alive again 🤪🤪

Thanks for the kind words and yes these cars cost a lot of time and money to do up.

laquerhead, I have had another back blowout since the last one mentioned on here. Put me out of action for at least 2 months.

hus22l, are you fixing up a car or buying one towards the end of the year. You don't need to a car to come have a chat with us when we meeting on the first Friday of the month.

volksfan ·

Hey Kev,
As your thread begins "I'm new to this site", so am I (just registered today), & spent a lot of the day reading your build thread.
Looks like your thread has been in "hiding" for about 12 months again, so I'll drag it out again, by commending you not only on the fantastic rebuild of your beetle, but also on taking so much of your obviously valuable spare time to post the photos & accompanying words for the rest of us to enjoy. Hats off also for your openness & frankness when you were struggling on a personal level.
Hope life, & your car, are both travelling well.
Cheers, Muz.

Camo ·

Hi Muz,

firstly, welcome to AVD and thanks for the kind words of appreciation 👍

Yes, it has been a little while since my old build thread has been updated. Not sure if I mentioned this anywhere in this thread, but not long after purchasing this car in 2007 I have always had the intention (or hope) of one day running a turbo, fuel injected motor.

So with that said and I'm not sure if you have seen my other thread or not, but that day is nearly here http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=106069 Hopefully I will have another update on the engine build/install process in the next few days.

Robski2011 ·

WOW Kev!!!!👍👍👍👍👍

I have just read your build from start to finish and all I can say is WOW!!! Not only an amazing car but from reading all your posts, an amazing person.

I am looking to get back into the DUB scene soon (fingers crossed). My original car was a 66 Bug and I have become quite nostalgic and would like to own another one in the near future.

I still can't express how inspiring your build is to me. It is purely unbelievable what can be achieved with a little knowhow and a lot of determination.

Once again you are an inspiration and deserve all the accolades you receive for your efforts.👍👍👍👍👍

Camo ·

Wow Robski, I am hummbled by your words and thanks for taking the time to write.

I never intended for my build thread to be inspiring, but glad it has given you a pump to get back into vw's 😁

Not to sure about the amzing person part, my wife might have other ideas 😂😂😂

Where are you from and if near by you are welcome to visit and have a look. Just drop me a PM if you like.

I would love to have a beer with you sometime ...... however I am in Melbourne and don't have any plans of visiting Sydney in the near future.

And I can understand the difficulty that you must have faced to complete such a project. I have been where you were years back and all I can say is it does get better, just stay positive and keep your family close (I know they were my major support in the dark times).

Keep your chin up and ENJOY YOUR AMAZING RIDE!!!!

Handy ·

Wow !! I just found this tread tonight and I've now gone through all the pages, I really love this bug, its so beautiful and cool. I know there is a lot of work behind it so you are well worth all the congratulations and the fantastic response from others. Absolutely fantastic !!
I can thell you that I've done the same job on my bug, from a rusty wreck and all the way to a shiny beauty on the car show. One of the differences is that yours is finer than mine 👍 But another difference is that mine was soooo much more rusty than your sweet little bug, the reason is that mine was born in Wolfsburg and then lived a hard life in Sweden. We have salt on our roads in the winters, salt eats old cars up here 😠
Anyway, I will have a beer with you when I come to Aussie wonderland 👍

HappyDaze ·

Crikey - how about that, Kev.....world-wide acclaim ! 👍

Camo ·

Hi Handy and thank you. I have a relative in Canada and I know of the salt issue they put on the roads. I don't think it is only old cars it attacks though 🙅 😂

Yes there is a hell of a lot of work that goes into doing up these old girls and I don't beleive the novices have any idea how much is involved. I now have more appreciation of the prices some ask for their cars that have been restored, of all varieties.

Greg, does this mean I'm famous all over the world. More like Kev, Kev who 😂😂😂

Yes you are right, it's not only affecting old cars, even new cars, but I know it was worse before, I mean the cars was even more vunerable than the new ones. Not much rust protection and even use of recycled metal that included old rust. Many newer is galvanized and made in aluminium with plasic all over the sides and fenders.
If we compare many other old cars to our vee dubs I think our cars are pretty strong anyway.

I have a little question about your speedometer.
I might have missed the information somewhere so please excuse me if so. I guess those nice guages are Ultra Lite, but where do i find them? I can only find the speedometer in MPH, but of cause I need it in Km/h like yours. Do you have a link to them or something?

And yes you are a celebrity in world class now 😂

HappyDaze ·

Now you've done it, Handy....Kev will need to get bigger hats now.😂

Robski2011 ·

Handy, I bought the gauges years ago form egauges.com but they don't seem to have them still. I just found this on ebay, so you can still get them.

Thanks Kev
I've seen them on ebay, unfortunately it looks not exactly in the right way. I might be very fuzzy with the details, I noticed that the Km/h is typed KPH and that disturbs me a lot. Anyhow, I think I will find something sweet when it's time for that, an option might be to replace the scale (is that the correct word?) or make my own with Km/h.

Thanks again
