Ok, for a while now we have been running a cheap wireless router in our house so that my sister can get the internet on her laptop. the coverage is pretty poor, but we are afraid that maybe the neighbors will be able to get onto it as we can locate theirs in our house. how do I put a lock on the router so that people cant use our internet? not after anythign too fancy, just somethign simple.

thanks
Ryan

use the wep in ya router

There should be a setting in the router to set up a Network Key or Network Password, if not should be some sort of option under the security section about encryption, users or keys etc.

What brand router? and might be able to help out a bit more.

Just remember, logging onto the neighbours network is free, use their bandwidth and not yours!

as greedy said, there should be an option for wep. You just need to set the key on the router, and set the same key on the pc(s). Pretty simple. Most manufacturers have guides in the manuals/websites which tell you how to do this.

It's a D-Link, if that helps. Thing is, I dont really remember having to do anythign to set it up in teh first place, Im guessing the wep is accessed through the computer that is wired to the router, through the control panel?

Some D-links use http://192.168.0.1 OR http://10.1.1.1 to access the router control panel.

Then go to Wireless Setup (or similar)

You have to give the router a name, wireless name, such as your name or something you would just like to call the router.

Pick a different channel, like 3, 7, 8, dont use 6 as all wireless is usually default 6.

Encryption type, best type to go for is WPA-PSK, not WEP as it is not very secure.

If there is a choice available, encrytion choice, use TKIP.

Password or pass phrase use a not so easy password that you will remember.

Save settings, apply and exit.

Search for wireless networks on your pc, select to connect to your router. Type the password and away you go.

Those instructions should be just about right for most D-Link routers.

you can also setup a wireless station access list if you have the option, find your mac addresses for your PC's or laptops and add them in. Not hard and itll only then allow access to particular machines by a hardware address.

Looks like this.

Wireless Station Access List

Turn Access Control On

Trusted Wireless Stations
Device Name MAC Address
Home PC 00:13:CE:46:32:32
LAPTOP 00:0E:lk:we:ED:EC

Ok, thanks guys, http://192.168.0.1 asks for a username and password, so I'm guessing that this is the right one, but we never set up a username or password. http://10.1.1.1 fails to connect.

any ideas what teh default username/password is?

unless you changed it, most routers use admin/password as the default log in to the router. Go get a bigger antenna from the 'puter shop, that will get you a far better coverage. Go the MAC address option if you can, as ppl said WEP is not that secure, most teen-hackers can get onto basic WEP protected networks.
