Picked up another Oval-all original except the speedo. Can somebody identify the year from this pan number--1249830 and this is stamped in the body up front-MKA16993.Cheers Gary.

Turbo54 ·

I think it is early Jan 56.
Whats it like? I am after a good set of rubber floor mats?
T54

vw54 ·

no its after June 56 as the chassis numbers ran sequential i have 1227636
so this is 124 which wouldld make it later

the MKA is a Martin n King body number not much meaning

volumex ·

The build date is early August 56 - making it one of the first of the 57 year model.

Linky to chassis number info from The Samba

nbturbo ·

Thanks for that info and the accuracy-much appreciated.

I would guess that it hit the dealers in December 56. The VWMA a few issues back had an article on a '56' which from the photos had a serial number of 124959# (I couldn't quite make out that last digit) and it was purchased on 22nd November 1956.

As for the MKA number, it was the 16,993th beetle assembled in Australia.

John thats interesting about the MKA number as mine is 259582 unless i have read it incorrect i will check it agian next week

volumex ·

My MKA numbers are:
For a build date of Oct 1955, chassis number 1-09908## the body is MKA 8867 (Early in the 56 year model)

For a build date of June 1957, chassis number 1 560 1## the body is MKA 24154 (Late in the 57 year model)

So the OP's MKA number seems about right for an early 57 year model. ((24154-8867)/2+8867 = 16510 cf 16993)

So when would MKA 4658 have come out?

Are you asking when it was built in Germany as a CKD kit, when it was assembled in Australia or when it was delivered to the happy first customer?

The German build date can be determined from the chassis number, the assembly in Australia would be 2-3 months after that and delivery to the first customer immediately after that.

Have a look at the link above to the Samba to work out your German build date. The rest of the information is a bit hard to source. I don't know what the Wolfsburg Museum birth certificate has on it, it may have the ex-MKA factory date??? (Anyone feel free to step in here....)
The delivery date to the customer should be written in the owners manual/folder thingy, if you are lucky enough to have the original.

Chassis is 1525296 and the tailights have those heart shaped thingies in the top.

vw54 ·

maybe its a 1 - 525296 if you dont include the dash it reads different or as per above has the pan been changed check the heater knob and seat rails

vw54 ·

yes it may be a pan swap

i will check my MKA number this arvo

IN2VWS wrote:You sure about that number?That is a July 1956 number.
That's the number on the pan
IN2VWS wrote:Has it had a pan change?

Dunooo

IN2VWS wrote:Is your heater knob in front or behind the handbrake?
It's in front

IN2VWS wrote:How many seat adjustment notches are on the seat rails?
Don't know that one, it only felt like one notch back a bit, it was dark and I think I heard a huntsman scurrying around so I wasn't game to go sticking my head there and it getting bitten off!

IN2VWS wrote:If the heater knob is in front of the handbrake, your car has had a pan change.
Okie dokie, thanks for that.

John

vw54 ·
