How do i tell the difference between the IRS gearboxes, im guessing there is only 2 from what i have heard. Superbug L, and S.
What about late bug IRS boxes that arent superbug?
Thanks,
Kuch

A Superbug (1302 / S Bug / 1971 to say early 1974) has 2 detachable plates around the drives 4.33 final drive (or whatever)
A L bug (1303 / late 1974 - 1975) has a single side plated box. One of the plates is part of the casting 3.88 drive
A 1976 standard is the same as a 1303
I think some of the VERY late ones had a strengthened casing but same innards as a single side plate

Can you tell me what this is? From what i understand its 2 sided plates because its got a plate on each side of gearbox. Is this right?

Hi
There is a 3rd IRS box type, the Type 3 IRS, if they have not been mucked around with they 8 mm alloy plugs plugging up the engine mount holes on the bottom of the bellhousing. They are 4.125 final drive, the early Type 3s had twin side plates and late ones had a single side plate like an 1303/L bug box but still with the 4.125 final drive.
So in a Beetle in Australia we had twin side plate boxes in the 71 & 72 Superbug/1302, these had the 4.125 final drive and then the LBug/1303 had a 3.88 final drive, these were from 73 till 75, then the 76 bug had the same box.
