Ooorkay racing is on again for this year at the Valla VW Spectacular
Again we will be heading to Raliegh raceway for Friday and Saturday circuit racing.
Entry will be $80 for one day or $120 for the two days, with a different format to the last couple of years.
This will be a racing meet held by the track owners itself and as such, no cams license will be required. There will of course still be a scruitineering process for everyones safety (more details as they arrive)...........but basically if your car is registered and road worthy you will be o.k, as will dedicated track/climb cars of course.
There will be no TIMES being recorded, the racing will be over a set time frame (10minutes maybe) with two cars on the track at a time.........this would allow drivers to complete many laps during each of their sessions as it takes about 1minute per lap around the track........this makes this event very very reasonably priced! It would cost much more to do this much time in a hire kart!
Naturally the entries are open to one and all, experienced or not, slow or fast! For me i find track time very enlightening on how hard my car will go and handle in a safe enviroment....it can be quite eye opening as to where the limits are of your vehicle!........something which you can apply to your everyday driving safety!
Helmets, long pants, long sleeve shirts and covered shoes will be required as per any motorsport event.........there are more details on requirements in the supplimentry regulations available very soon.
Passengers are allowed for an additional $20 , so for all those who have always wanted someone else to experience the fearlings 😂 of your race car and driving ability, here is your chance!!!!
Entries will be held to 30 cars per day (one entry per driver)...........and as such will be held exclusively for VW drivers (US!🤓) until June 1st. After that entries will be offered to local car clubs to fill the numbers, and believe me, they will fill very , very quickly due to the popularity of these days held at Raleigh now.
Sooo, whos up?..........I will be there in the hellVWrx .🥷 and hope to have a drifting style set up tuned and tested before then
Definitely count me in - Jezebel might even be closer to "fast" by then !!!
😉
Craig Torrens ·
pity there's no timing.................should be fun with a set of stock tyres 👍
hellbugged ·
can't have everything!......there were plenty of people that baulked at the fees last time only to miss out on a great couple of days with plenty of track time for the money...........this time it's multiple laps for even less money🤘
yes stockies would be fun, treat it as a test and tune, a self taught advanced driving course, a time to show off your skills for a mate, capture your car at full flight on video (to show your grand kids when your racing career is over😂) or as a drift session............it's up to you!
... most of all it will be great value and fun, with plenty of track time and great for spectators too, that's the most important bits covered😎
how many other VW events provide more than what, 10 to 20 seconds of adrenalin at a time!
...........and yes we would love to have you entered Craig, your driving is always great entertainment!
Volkswagenboy ·
Perhaps I should enter with my '72 Slowback!!
-Staggers.
Craig Torrens ·
I think I will run my Ford.
Volkswagenboy ·
Coz ya know I'll actually beat it as opposed to another VW?

Craig Torrens ·
hehehe.

not too much time left for entries👍
cheap fun!!!!!..........OPEN TO ALL COMERS, VW watercooled, high horsepower, low H.P
Sides ·
Heh - thanks for the reminder Daimo - just phoned in then and gotten my name on the list.
Can't wait !!!
😁
hellbugged ·
great news Dave.............will be good, long track time for you matey. do you know the layout of the circuit?
i will grab a list of entrants to post up. we have 16 vee-dubbers so far, so a good showing.............
who else from QLD?...............don't be scared, you won't be able to embarass yourself more than what i will in the notch🙂.
C.T?.... or are you stuck on straight lines these days?😀
for those attending the event anyways, why not put yourself in for a run..............no need to stay with your car in a "park ferme" there is ample time for wandering, looking and talking as the cars just roll out from the large pit grounds, rather than be clogged in a "grid" waiting for next run!..............this is a great chance for us all to see what the limits of your vehicle's are, in a safe enviroment. think about it, no cops, no gutters to bang into, no pedestrians, no telephone poles, no oncoming traffic..............just learning about YOUR car!

Hi Damo,
I'm tempted. What date is it?
I've got a NSW Supersprint round at Eastern Creek this weekend. I've got a fun day at Oran Park lined up. I'm planning to to Warwick again, via Noosa. Then there's the Dutton in Jak's car.

July 31st----4th August weekend........racing Friday and Saturday
is it possible to have an a vw motorsport event without CT's silver oval?
like, the trip to Valla is just a Sunday drive for that machine of yours👍 after Warrick and Portland!
hope you can make it👍
i believe the V-force guys are coming in numbers, so that's good.
if anyone has contact details for Paul Zanello, i would like to contact him too
Craig Torrens ·
Hey CT, what day are you racing at the creek ?

Heh heh - yeah - I think I need some good, long track time after my couple of pirouette's down at Oran Park !!!
😏
Never been to the track there, so yeah would definitely be interested in seeing what she looks like.
Oh and c'mon CT - you know you want to !!!
hellbugged ·
grab me your address via PM Dave, i will knock up a vid of past years

Last time I was at Valla the oval misbehaved. It wouldn't start because the heavy cable to the stater motor wan't making enough contact with the terminal. Then the throttle stuck coming into turn 2, which could've been nasty, due to one of the arms on the cross bar linkage sliding along the bar.
That was back in about 2002 when the car had steel wheels and no extra decklid vents.
I'll be at Eastern Creek this Sunday to try and crack the 2 minute mark. I'm sure I'd do it if I bolted new tyres on. The current ones are about 70% worn and I've been racing on them for almost 2 years. At least they maintain their performance with additional heat cycles better than any other brand.
Now it looks like it will be 16 degrees and raining. A sub 2 minute time is no chance.

Hi Daimo
do you have an entry list and gate times for spectators?

Can make it so hope a spot's available? I'm leaving early Friday morning to get there for scrutineering at 9.00am.

Hopefully won't jinx things, but the weather report looks good on the BOM website.... fingers, toes and everything else crossed maybe I'll get my first non-wet event for the year !!!
Only Two sleeps to go... well with a 3AM start it's one and a bit sleeps - man I can't wait.

gates open early,on Friday as scruit has to be done before 9........ just come on in (i don't think there is any cover charge, will let you know asap)
Saturday normally has gokarts operating to the public before we get there so it's the same deal
come say hello Dave.....remind me to pack some box goodies in your boot before you head home
entries i'm being kept in the dark........
Aaron was certainly keen for a run in THE kombi❗ on the Saturday.........that will be most interesting
Vforce boys.......Glenn Torrens.......three of us in the notch.......the spyder replica is unreal........."wally" Penbose and Craig........Matty and Col in his fresh stroker .......Dave Sidery........i think Wayne Penrose
last i spoke to Luke, the field was full of VW with no need to call on "others"
who else?

ever woken up in the morning and had a feeling it was going to be a big day?..........
went and smoked some tyres yesterday...........track is good, entry road in good condition (some big holes at the end of the dirt but easy to get round)...........hope everyone makes it safely as it was a tad boring doing lap after lap by our selves👍

Went to the track today, and back home now.
Some cool and very fast cars and some carnage.
Awesome Guy's Golf,hell-notch, subi-spyder, and a certain black Kombi!!👍
Gotta love the sounds from numerous aircooleds and four venturis!
Home more turn up tomorrow and fill in the spots of those guys who said they would be there but wern't.
I drove 9 hours today in the hope to see them.
Excellent effort Luke, Daimo, and all the guys that were there!

Hi Andrew,
The Landcruiser sits smoothly on 2000 rpm at 100, so it was no probs.
I had every intention of staying for a couple of days of Volksy fun,
but priorities meant the best comprimise was a return trip the same day.
Sorry we did not catch up John, were you at the track?
Last visit to Valla for me was 1994,
and some good news from Wayne Penrose was some video of my blown car doing a lap or two
at Raleigh way back then.
Pretty keen to see the video so I can see if my good memories of the day, and reality, are one in the same.

well a massive 2 days...............
brief descripition,
a blue circuit racer into the wall
a very fast black kombi doing well for the first time on a curcuit
a spyder into the gravel trap
plenty of rocker gasket leaks and consequent spins on the oil trails
plenty of frantic work going on in the pits
and a good thing i packed the "spare" race car as the good one had a massive engine fire/explosion
everyone is alive and well YAY!
speedster356 ·
Top 2 days! Had to leave early on Sat after a trip to the sand trap😊 No damage apart from a blown ECU fuse? The notch fire ball was scarey.....check those HP EFI fuel lines people.

Nice day at the circuit! Good to see Aron in Kombi with a rota enjoying himself*nice stuff m8*😎
Dave Billie in a new Black R32 very nice! Still think your 04 R32 is quicker*i own it now*😂
Damo and the notch.....it still went quiet hard
Andrew*GTmac* very nice m8 car looks and goes great
what are you doing over there pete? You must be just coming out on the track for a warm up huh?

yep..........unforseeable in the middle of a line where it was not rubbing or kinked 🥲 for the record it wasn't a fitting or clamp that came off............anyways, everyone near and in the car escaped unharmed and the car will go again eventually.
its fairly common for VWs to run at their very best just before they let go..............the notch was "on fire" for the 3 days before KABOOM!
THANKYOU WAYNE PENROSE and others? for being so quick with the extinguishers. i owe you big time!
thankyou to all those who went out to the track to watch, the people who gave up their time to help at the track and importantly those who entered the lap dash in their street cars and racers alike............it was certainly a spectacle to behold...............WELL DONE EVERYONE!

All I can say is man, what an AWESOME couple of days.
Was brilliant meeting/catching up with some folks from here, picking the odd brain here and there to get some extra tips on car setup, and not to mention some serious play time on the track. My first real sprint session with Jezebel and man am I hooked.
Now I can't wait for the next Valla to come around - hopefully won't be a clash with the hillclimb series and I'll be able to stay the full weekend !!!

thanx Marty and Dave for the haul to get there and SUPPORTING the racing............got any videos? because i spent a lot of Friday underneath the notch and sadly hardly saw anyone run🙅.............i did see JVL spannering in my engine bay and i rekon it could be a case sabotage so he wasn't forced into having a ride😀
yes notch was really hooked up with it's new clutch, better power delivery and oodles more HP now the boost was all going into the motor...........the beast it was in the past has been tamed, we wll make the effort to get out more often now it's more user friendly
Aaron..........thankyou for putting on a show in THE kombi.............this guy must be the nicest person i have ever met❗.........he was very nervous having never done any track work in the matt black machine, he was unsure of the track lines nor just how well his car would handle or stop (we new it would certainly GO!)............but being the smart man he is, he took his time and by Saturday afternoon was wearing a grin bigger than anyone.

Here you go Daimo.
I have some video footage of the notch going around the track too, but off to work now. so i will put them up tomorrow.
What we saw of what happened to the notch was like this.
It came out of the long sweeper after the finish line and stated to miss fire, going through the rest of the track it looked like a water line was leaking or something.
Then as it came through the pits the entire boot just gushed out liquid then Boom.
Kombi_Rescue ·
quick thinking wayne penrose...looks like you saved mr unwins type 3.........must be that exercise your been doing......photgraph says it all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good to catch up with everyone there, had a great time.
Good to see Jeff, Wayne, Steve and everyone running, and good to meet Aaron, Dave, Craig & the rest of the crew.
Should have some footage from the little camera mounted on the Golf shortly, we were pretty happy getting most laps in the 54 second mark & then down into the 51 second mark before the engine mount called it a day 🥲
VWMA Editor ·
That's two BBQs Wayne had to attend to in the same event. First the canteen as assistant cook, and then the Notch roast!
OZ Towdster ·
So who was driving at the time Jeff or Daimo and who if anybody was the passenger
hellbugged ·
jeff was driving and glenn torrens shotgun............
wow i though the fire was finished when i pulled the battery switch, the window net and was dragging Jeff out by his pony tail😂........Glenn got out rather rapidly under his own steam which then put Jeff as my priority..........yes i at first thought it was coolant too until the smell hit us...........we had had fuel delivery issues all weekend so a missfire and smell (breather issues previously) didn't ring any major alarm bells in Jeffs mind
thanx again Wayne Penrose, Jeff reckons he now understands why "ledgend" is printed accross your oval's wing, saying "it's for ledgendary fire extinguishing" and he also praises and thanks you for your quick actions............the only place i knew there was an extinguisher close by was in the notch and i wasn't going back there in a hurry..............i'm in the foreground eyeing of Guy Hardings golf about to raid it, having realized mine was at the top of the hill, when i heard Wayne and the other guy there setting the extinguishers off...........i was just stoked i had my mates out of the car at that point
hellbugged ·
i think i can see Dave Sidery there with an extinguisher at the ready also ............thanx mate!!!
yes Guy, great pics there for sure...........you certainly can't say we were not pushing the adhesion limits and beyond! (pages 5 6 7)
all that drama left me back in the "spare" race car..............👍...........just took all my travelling tools and kiddie gear out and drove it onto the track. i haven't touched it since the pre dyno day tune up. i think i was on the track within half an hour of the BBQ
it felt as slow as a wet week in there after the notch. some issues that came about at Oran park returned with flooding of the engine in the corners🙁...........so that kept me from creating oversteer out of each corner, o well still fun
colin ·
Glad to hear no-one was hurt at the bbq, sorry i mean racing at Raleigh.
Cool footage also.
Cheers Col

Hi all , I havent been on line for months but did find the time to prepare the sports sedan for Valla 08' and enjoy the 2 days of racing .
It wasnt without a few minor hiccups though , with a beetle oiling the track for me as I proceeded around the track on my 3rd run and I very competantly putting the sports sedan head on into the tyre wall at the start/finish line and giving our flag marshall a real scare .
Pics follow of a very bent sports sedan .
It took myself , apprentice Ben and best mate Chris about an hour and a half to have it all repaired and ready to race the next day .
As for the fire in the pits , it is no secret that mr unwin and myself dont see eye to eye , and havent done for years . All that aside , I would never let another persons pride and joy burn to the ground , no matter who they were or what they had done in the past . In a dangerous situation like this survival instincts just kick in and you react the best way possible to protect all those around . I guess those 3 days a week at the gym , run and ride 12ks each sunday , and loss of 8 kilos really did help !!
Thanks to all who organised and ran such a good event , especially Luke Pell , and gave us the opportunity to have 2 days of enjoyment and entertainment .
great to see your car out and about and also thankyou for supporting our event ..........thanx again for the quick actions, i at the very least owe you a new extinguisher, catch up at Warwick i hope

Hi all, I have just arrived home (Tues 9pm) after Valla and two days workig in the region, I must say a big thanks (first of all) to the dudes on the extinguishers as I was the passenger in the T3WRX that was torched.
Jeff offered to take me for a run but we could smell fuel for half the lap so we limped it back to the pits as that's where the extinguishers are! BOOM! Needless to say, I took a quick look at where the flames were (right THERE!) and got out REAL quick. I looked around and saw Jeff still in the car and snuck back to kick my door shut. You can see me in the blue helmet far left. F---ing not much fun..
But running my 'wrecking yard racer' 1968 Beetle was GREAT fun! Built on a budget (starting with a $275 shell/chassis and $100 engine, NOTHING on the car cost more than $300, except for the recoed heads and my own big brakes), it ran hard all weekend (except for a carby problem that I fixed in 45 secs) and didn't put dust all over the track or spill oil anywhere 😬
Secondly, big thanks to Luke Pell for running the days. Top work
EDIT: from reading above, it looks like I owe Penrose and Guy H for thier quick work on the big red bottles when the SupaNotch caught fire . Thanks lads... And to you too Damo. beers all round

hose split just near the green crimp off in the pics above, nothing to do with me mate!........it wasn't leaking, kinked, rubbing, chaffed blah blah.........just f&4%ing let go..............the fire was barely out before i insisted on opening the boot to check it wasn't the results of any failures on my behalf..........relieved, i'll tell you!
it was something i wanted to do, but was told it was good injection hose, believe me i'm spewing more than Jeff (who took it with the usual philosophical view)....cause i again have to fix the car🥲
now something i would like to discuss is wether an injected car needs a rising rate regulator???
and should we do the lines in steel, braided, or just grab new 500psi hose............i was thinking if you went back wards into a wall etc with solid lines, the chance of rupture would be far greater than with soft, flexible ones??
was it you who left the marble in the fuel tank for me to search out on the Friday Chris?🤪.........certainly wasn't getting enough fuel to burn with that sitting neatly in the fuel pick up
ang3lsholocaust ·
I'll vouch for Daimo being under the front end all day friday.
Nothing to do with the back end.
I was holding my breath when you took your bug out daimo afterwoods.
Thought you may have been a little angry and taken it out on the poor little bug. 😀
ang3lsholocaust ·
Ahhh. so chris was master fidler of that car once before.
Bet it was him that put the marble in there. :P
ang3lsholocaust ·
On another note.
I think Glen should have entered himself into the olympics.
He shot off out the door no sooner then you heard the bang. could have been dangerous, but shit that was funny watching him run. 😀

kind of adds up doesn't it.
lost marbles and Chris Fraser😏
did you even come up for the weekend Chris?
nah jace, just drove my car as i do every day........was a quick change over hey!..didn't even check tyre pressures
yeah Glenn was out of there........i was off after him because i thought he must have been badly injured.......until he politely came back to close the door!.....and that was good thinking too!
there was a lot to learn from the event for all of us

Always thought he was 1 marble short of a bag 😂😘
Jeff was a little concerned about you taking the bug out too. 🤪
hellbugged ·
yep, Jeff is always insistant on me using the race car for racing and my daily for transport. i try to take that advice whenever possible
the gearbox will never be the same again, but that's ok..........i've got big plans there
sorry i didn't have time to stop Jace, was nice to speak again, maybe next time i will just remain spectator for the weekend and catch up on the socialising side of things.
ang3lsholocaust ·
Its all good Daimo.
Was good to see the old girl finally on song before it decided it didn't want to take any more part in the weekends events. 😀
I would Also like to thank Marty VDU.88A for taking jess out for a few laps.
It put her in a good mood and now it Looks like i am allowed to look for a car to build as a race car. WOOOT 😀
Hmmm. Wonder how the new beetle would go 😀

Braided lines and a fuel regulator!...Rubber ones NEVER!

does it need boost sensative, rising rate tho?............

wat for!🙅
hellbugged ·
yeah well, i never really questioned it before..............shop policy is strictly NO reinventing the wheel !!!..............so things that have always run fine don't get touched, however bits getting fried sometimes need replacing🙄
i just came to thinking that efi does not require rising rate, but having always been there, perhaps the haltech is tuned to accomodate this also............big kettle of fish to open there

It is a great pic, but I can not take credit for it.
Aaron sent it to me after scanning the original.
Someone nice left the photo under his wiper blade on the Sunday.
If anyone has the original Digital, it may be of better quality to post here.
hellbugged ·
yeah, cool pic...............can you make sure Aaron knows of all the pics on ww.circlework.com.au please Dave, there are some great ones there.
has he come down from cloud 9 yet?

Look at your fuel cycle map on Ecu!
hellbugged ·
some random video here.........including Waynes off (not that we liked seeing that)
amazeer ·
no marbles from me buddy. apart from burning the clutch so much it turned into a wok kind of shape I dont think I have done anything bad to the car. well I did play a part in putting those ugly flares on it. Oh and I did happen to reverse it into a concrete block and squash the exhaust. But apart from that... well I have never torched a car even if its expected from somone from warilla.
Just a guess, I think the injectors would be most efficient at mid range to maximum, but probably dont give the best spray pattern if only open a very short time. If the thing is getting enough fuel at max boost without maxing out the injectors and its also not at minimum duty off boost then I dont think you need the rising rate.
Is it running crazy pressure at the moment to deliver the flow? If you go farting around with fuel pressure you are going to need more dyno time.

Dave was having a blast, and this was only early Friday!

yeah, I had my 'trigger finger' on my harness release for about 3/4 of the lap... Just in case! Jeff and I could both smell juice. And juice might mean fire...
When I saw flames below my passenger window after the car went BOOMBBM in the pits, I got outta there ASAP! I looked back once to kick my door closed as Jeff wasn't yet out of the car and I didn't want flame/fuel getting in. Scary stuff!
hellbugged ·
all fair enough there Glenn..............did you enjoy first gear🙄
went and inspected the damage today...........there is none!, well except the paint.
incredibly it's all in good shape, so much so, i wish we had of replaced the broken line and headed back out!
most of the black crap scrubbed off the gay green paint, the perspex windows remain unscathed, plastic timing belt covers, water bottles, intercooler thermo, electrical connectors all fine, miriad of hoses- untouched, hell, even the soft tissue of the aircleaner has survived! i can't believe it!
worst damage was the insulation tape (as humble as the stuff is), has self sacrificed to save the wiring to the plugs and injectors on 3/4 side of the motor..............stripping the tape back revealed no damage to the electrical wires underneath👍
Sides ·
Heh heh - don't I come off like a tool in that video !!! oh well, guess that's what they get for trying to make me talk as soon as I got out of the car, adrenaline still pumping and all...
😉
Good that the Notch has escaped so lightly Daimo - be good to see her running again !!!
👍
ang3lsholocaust ·
damo, i cant believe how lucky the notch came out this
after the fire, so very lucky
jess and jace🙂

What are the specs on your car, Paul?
hellbugged ·
Cam, i was thinking about your racing desires when Paul posted that...........
he drove it off the trailer at oran park bug-in and ran 1st outright!. it had been something llike 4 or 5 years since he had driven it.
nice close ratio/tough gearbox, 2L (plus maybe) EFI motor that went very hard indeed (porsche fan/shroud), heaps of neg camber on front, race sway bars, full roll cage, stripped interior etc etc..............full sorted/proven package if you can get him to part with it!.
nice bloke, that's been around long enough gather the know how to build a fast race beetle too!
search the oran park or "bug-in" posts...........there are some pics of it in action there
i have his email if you really want to contact him..........definately chasing the price and particulars myself, great car!
Cam ·
