move that bloody fuel filter!

Joel ·

why was i not surprised to see where the fuel filter...was

looks like yet another person has learned the hardway dont put the fuel filter in the engine bay.....
i hate raving about this but i also hate seeing toasted vws
under the tank ppl!!

yep it seems to be a rule for vw's you must place any highly combustable fluids as close as possable to a spark or ignition wires or you will be tossed out of the vw world
i also hate the fuel pump with the brass push on that always come out pumping fuel all over a hot engine I KNOW but you will see them at any show
good call joel

Notch Nut ·

Would it make any differnce if the filter had clamps over the hoses?
All my hose connections are clamped and yes, I have a fuel filter in the engine bay🙄

greedy53 ·

no half the time its the filter that splits i have seen 4 vw's go up and it's sad all because they didn't move a bloody filter

donn ·

I have a bit of a problem here, as mine is a buggy and has the fuel tank at the back over the axle the only place I have for a fuel filter is either in the wheel arch or off to one side in the engine bay, although its not an enclosed engine bay as in a true beetle, I have taken the precaution of fitting a glass filter, this should give me a little more protection , mind you I can't see why a filter would split, it's not as if it's under preasure (I think)

barls ·

wrong on the more protection one stone in the wrong place and its shattered glass

Thats only becuase they havent maintained the car properly and the filter has probably been there for 10 years.......nothing to do with the placement

Notch Nut ·

So where is the best place for a fuel filter?😵‍💫
On a type 3 the only other places would be immeadeatly after the fuel tank tucked away out of harms way from speed humps etc or just before the hose passes through the firewall shroud into the engine bay?
Am I getting warmer?😊

I have never heard of fuel filters splitting, however as they are plastic and kept in a hot enviroment (engine bay) I can see how this could be a problem!! I wouldn't doubt that it is possible, just wouldn't want it to happen to me!!!😬

Well considering the VW's should have a tune up every 10,000klms or 6 months, a plastic fuel filter isnt going to split in that time.

One wouldn't think so!!!🥷

i like where the stock pipe comes out of the tranny forks before it comes in to the engine bay. also under the tank isnt bad as previously mentioned. ive seen half a dozen filters split in a couple of years and they werent old as i was working for the mechanic who fitted them. most of them were due to friction from rubbing against things. but its still not a good idea to have it sitting above a point of ignition

phatratpat ·

already moved it Joal, your right having plastic in your engine bay is loco !!h

Joel ·

the main point im trying to make is those plastic filters arent meant to be on the pressure side of the fuel pump
they werent made to have pressure thro them
have a look at any old carbed car that has them factory fitted there always on the suction line to the pump

main problem in vws when there btwn the carb and pump is yeah they can split but also the added weight of them bouncing around pulls the brass fitting out of the carby, or the fuel pump if its the old early type
then u got the fuel pump spraying fuel all over the dissy
and up she goes

best spot is either under the tank in the flex line there
or in the flex line next to the gearbox

I always thought that having the filter before the carby but after the fuel pump would defeat the point in having a filter if it clogs up your fuel pump.

I like the idea of keeping the filter near the gearbox. Just makes it a real bugger to change if you have a slammed dub and no hoist!

Joel ·

oh yeah the other thing u can do for piece of mind which is what i do is use the metal EFI filters
these are made to have 60psi + pressure in fuel injected cars and have a longer service life than the $2 plastic ones

just need to find one with 1/4" /6mm barbs
i think it was early pulsar that i used

jo_tas ·

Mine is mounted near the transmission before it goes through the firewall/tin peice, thats in a type 3.

Adsman ·

Just use an EFI metal filter for a whole $4. The EFI filters are supposed to filter out smaller particles too. I have Kadron IDF style carbs with 8mm fittings, so a VN/VP commodore one does the trick. Also just mount it near the gearbox frame horns so that when you spill fuel changing filters it doesn't sit on the frame head and destroy your paint job.

Hi

I agree the biggest no no is to have it on the pressure side. Stupid mechanics are the biggest problem with VWs or any car.

Donn if your glass filter is the screw together type, through it in the bin, they have been known to unscrew.

Early Pulsar EFI filter are the best and if you can get a filter bracket from a wreck, even better.

If your stuck for space and want something reliable and that you can clean, moniter and keep try these. It is what I have. No fire from fuel filter for sure!

Bet they cost more than four bucks!

steve hit the nail on the head
N12 exa/ET or N13 pulsar bracket rivetted to the firewall above the master cylinder, replace the filter and all the flexible fuel lines every 2 years happy days 👍

Nothing to do with pressure, its the effect of the heat from the engine on the plastic, making it very hard and brittle.

donn ·

So my glass filter should by ok?

yeah well..
thats my mantra too..
but mines under the car outta the way of any hot stuff comin thru..
beggars beleif that situation..
its sooo damn obvious as to what can and may/will happen eventually..

Thats a real shame too.

That beetle looks quite nice if u ignore the charded section. Bet it was pretty hot before hand.

I'm sure there was a lesson learnt quickly though.
very sad though.
Poor little thing.

U know if they are gonna fix it? sell it or insurance writing it off?

Joel ·

not getting fixed by the owner
hes put it up on ebay
thats how i came across it
pretty easy fix

I bet it was pretty hot during too😂

but seriously its a shame to see a nice car get damaged. It would make for an easier fix than if it had an electrical fire. Trust me I lost out there before.🥲All good now though it just delayed the rwc a month or two😎
