I have just seen for sale in a Repco catalog

locking number plate screws - to stop Your number plate from being stolen...

packet of 24

thats a lot of number plates..

so, is someone out there waiting to grab My number plates????

and if so WHY ??

Lee

PS: I'm hoping its just a city thing/problem...? Lee

Lee, number plates are going missing almost daily as the price of petrol rises.
Steal the plates, grab a full tank of fuel and then drive away.
Within a couple of hours police coming knocking on your door coz your plates were caught on the service station cctv.
Hence the governments move to have pay before you pump facilities installed in all service stations.

Bizarre ·

A mate of mine lived in a block of units and developed a run in with a neighbour over a really trivial matter

the neighbour responded by stealing my mates number plate every couple weeks.
It was obvious but could never be proved.
Costs $150 or so each time my mate had to get it remade

Mick058 ·

yeppo, happened to my wife's car. Make sure you report it as soon as their stolen so your clear of the stolen petrol.

Hi

Even with locking screws they will still get stolen, you need a pry bar under the plate to remove them and the crims dont care what condition that they are in.

I'm not sure about stolen plates but VW54 (Dave Birchall) car was stolen a long time ago which had personal plates on it and he lost the plates forever.

Steve
that doesn't sound right

if You pay the high price of personalized plates
You should be able to have them remade without giving the old ones back...

doesn't the RTA know cars get stolen??
usually with their plates..

the thin alloy plates can be just ripped off

and I never thought of the petrol side of it...

cheers

Lee

With stolen number plates, personalised or standard, unless recovered they will not be re-issued.
If you lose a plate you can advise the RTA of the lose and new plates will be re-ordered.
But once stolen it's gone forever unless recovered and then there is no guarentee that it will be re issued to you.
And yes the locking nuts are only as good as the person trying to rip them off.
If you wiggle a number plate back and forth you will create a hole where the nuts are and walk away with the plate that now has 2 bigger than normal holes. The crooks just drill in using the other mounting holes and off they go.

Life is way too short to be worrying about stolen number plates though.

Need more time to work out to get and then keep the beetles humming nicely..

I am glad our cars are only ever in our locked garage, in a friends driveway or within sight. Alternative for me is walk, or walk to the station and catch a train to the city.

GTMac ·

Very true, once plates gone missing you cannot have again unless recovered. My mate hung onto his MRZED plates incase he ressurected his 240z. I drive past a Hilux everyday that has GMHA9X plates (worth a mint) and think how pissed he would be if taken.

helbus ·

Plates are worth nothing unless you sell them!!!!

And yes I guess they would be for sale at one stage seeing they are driven on a Hilux or the guy is dreaming for the day he can find/afford one, but yes agree only have a $$$ value once someone wants them. I would say that if the price of muscle cars in Aust is any indication I would be quite happy to be holding these plates.

Yes, those plates would be worth a lot to an A9X Torana
owner..

I wouldn't want them.... lol...

Anyone ever Araldited [twin epoxy] number plates on?

or used double sided tape.... lol..

Lee

PS: I believe in South Aust You can make your own plates..??
as i've seen many different ones..
letters & numbers thin or thick..
raised or flat... etc Lee

Hi

Losing my personal number plates would really upset me, they were a 21st birthday present from my parents almost 33 years ago. I might paint them onto my body work.

Steve

68AutoBug ·

Hi Steve,

I know of a few people who have personalized plates they got for their birthday years ago..

so, they would have a lot of sentimental value
but unless you write that on them... no one knows..

but I'm sure a thief wouldn't take any notice of that.. anyway.. [He's a thief afterall...]

I have the steel black & yellow plates on My beetle
and they are very strong

If I used 4 or more screws on them, there is no way to remove them easily as they are too strong.

the thin alloy ones, can be ripped off very easily..

unless there were screws in all the holes...

using allen headed screws and filling the hole up with araldite epoxy or similar..

Joel ·

i wouldnt wanna loose mine either so my trick around this situation was to "loose" a plate in an "accident" and get a replacement set
i had to hand the ramaining one back in but ive now got a spare rear one safely tucked away
i wonder if anyone would ever pick that i had to rear plates on??

one of my pet hates is ppl with premium plates that put the small one on the back

68AutoBug ·

Actually Joel
I have seen cars with two small plates on front and rear

and a small plate on the rear does look silly to Me..

Lee

PS: that was a brainy thing to do to get a spare plate

donn ·

mate of mine was booked for having the small and large plates round the wrong way, thing is he had been driving the car that way for nearly 4 months and that's how he bought it from a dealer, didn't mean shit to the cop though

Taz Devil ·

A mate of mine had their front number plate stolen. It was not until someone mentioned it that they noticed. I mean how often do you look at your front number plate (unless you are like the rest of us on this site). Had to report it to police and was reissued free of charge, otherwise had to pay for it. Coppers were not really concerned about it though.

68AutoBug ·

years ago
I think when the small plates first appeared

a local accountant had a toyota supra with only a rear number plate..

the police eventually told him to put it back on...

there are many badly faded plates in the country

and yet when You get your car passed for rego
they are supposed to check Your plates..
also many are covered in mud, along with the rest of the car
and these people could easily speed thru speed cameras

and I keep polishing My plates... lol

mine have been stolen b4... like a year or two ago ... the guy that used the plates was involved in a ram raid....

...the cops rang up "excuse me sir, are u *blah blah* with the plates on a VW Beetle *blah blah*..." "um yeah ..." "we recoverd ur plates of a Landrover 4WD last night involved in a ram raid, would u kno anyhting aoubt this?" "WTF!!! MY PLATES ARE GONE!!!"

the guy lol'd, but i got a completly new set of plates, like new numbers and everything. sigh at the tards that stole it ...
