to go flat or not?

Sooooooooo...

I'm torn between black & black when it comes to what colour (or shade) my early notch eventually ends up in.
I've been seeing heaps of late model performance & luxury cars getting turned out in Matte Black (you can even order a new AMG with flat silver, white or black) and when done right they just look like sXe on wheels!
I would'nt mind doing my notch in this sort of guise, especially coupled with some very trick/Euro rims, a black interior and pristine chrome. However, I think it may be hard to pull off. Whilst flat finishes work quite well on high end rods, muscle & performance cars I find it's rarely the case when it comes to other vehicles. And when done well splittys or beetles the whole car tends to have been built a'la old school hot rod and/or Custom. Which isn't really the look I would be after.

What do you guys think? Should I go flat or stay safe with the tried & true gloss.

I've been looking at too many water pumpers of late 馃槈

The MKIV at the top of this thread looks great matte (altho only primer) sitting ontop of those multi piece black wheels with polished rim.馃槏

just do it馃憤

matte/satin black always looks good....

you could always go two-tone if you're still undecided, top half gloss bottom half matte....

yeah, i'd like to see an early notch in flat black..............digging the mix with gloss on that golf, perhaps some scallops, ghost flames, GT/herbie stripes or flash with the gloss would be cool. i know i've got problems, but i don't mind the tuxeudo with some white (flat) if done well

i used a flattening potion in some gloss on my first "matte" effort..............ended up going back over with some purpose "GMH flat" which gave a much better finish in my opinion.

depending on what you do with the car, but i found the paint got "dirty" after a while, with stains etc, which couldn't be polished out of course馃...........but a simple blow over respray was cheap and effective to cure that

spraying the camper satin black this week (wheather permitting) I think it should look alright with 31" Baja Claws Hehehe!!!馃槵

Go the satin black. Bear in mind its harder to get 'right' than full gloss, because you cant just buff out the imperfections like you can with full gloss.

Soooo, I'll take that as a "no it will look terrible" then? 馃檯

Daimo, do you have any pics of the results you got with the GMH flat?

I also like the idea of using red accents, a'la the Gembala Mirage GT 馃 http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=112424

Anyone want to talk me into going all gloss?

IT WOULD LOOK BLOODY GREAT

Cam, check out www.kustomshop.com. They have paint call hotrod flatz, which is "paint with a 30' satin primer appearance". I think that might be the type of stuff you're after to get the look you want.

They also advertise in Deluxe Car Kulture mag. The website has a nice little vid that talks you through it, and they have a whole lot of variations of finish.
