get a short battery as the bug is not a high compresson engine a small battery will do 11 plate with side or very low terminals ask ya local repo co or peps for a battery an 112 plate will be more than enough i used a battery out of a ford laser for 3 year4s with no worries the reason for a low battery is the rear seat it must be lower than that and a bit of rubber or simelar on top will stop and shorting out a comon problem with vw's

vw54 ·

get a sunken terminal one like the later model VWs so it does not hit on the back seat

beauty about beetles is pretty much anything will work/fit

ive had from huge 900CCA tractor batterys right down to 250CCA 3cyl arsewipe car batterys in my bugs over the years
they all do the job but yes just cover the terminals from the backseat springs
not nice trying to pull ur backseat out when its on fire

Why not get a 12 volt battery of the same dimensions as that of a 12 volt Bug or Type 3. If the seat height is the same as the later Bug or type 3, the proper battery cover makes everything that much safer as nothing can short out as it is made of plastic. Also the clamp would all be standard for holding the battery in place.

Hi
I have an Exide/champion branded
P460D battery with recessed posts..
held in with the original clamp..

I also have a large piece of rubber sheeting covering the battery etc..

it will stop the dreaded "knees in the back seat" fire..

For todays regs, its also mean to be externally vented so the inside of your car doesn't fill with explosive gasses on a long drive. You can see the vent tube on the left centre top of this battery. This one actually has the terminals the wrong way around (twas the only one in Warwick last year)

I siliconed the vent holes on my previous battery as it used to spill the acid on the pan. 🤪

matberry ·

Yeah, it is meant to be routed outside the car!

I have used ventless batteries over the years

with no problems..

so vented batteries shouldn't be put inside a car really...

or siliconing the holes will make it ventless... lol
