Ok i tried to do this via the search function with no luck.

Can anyone tell me the current cost to get a 1600 long block rebuilt. like line bored, new bearings, rings, but using the second hand P/B's and such.

looking at the economy of doing self or just getting it done at somewhere like Conti motors.

any help appreciated

Hi Ampdub

I am having mine rebuilt and it is setting me back about $1500.00.

Cheers

Apart from the machining, do it yourself. There are several things you need to remember and prepare for, but you could have it at a longblock stage within a day, stock 16 is the simplest of engines, tolerances are huge, it's almost a throw together engine, comparative to bigger stroker engines.
There are rules you have to follow, but get a book and have a go, you can be as picky as you like and you know you've done it exactly as you want.

~$700.
What I paid others to do: align bore, rods machined, reground lifters, machine crank, cam check.

What I bought: New rings, new cam and crank bearings, new gasket kit, new fasteners, new valves.

What I reused: Case, P&B, heads, valve train, springs, crank, cam, oil pump

What I did: removed and disassembled, cleaned, honed barrels, cleaned block again, blueprinted oil pump, reassembled.

Ran it in on the drive from Melbourne to Valla two years ago. Still going strong (touch wood).

As Flipflop says, it's easy to do yourself if you have a garage/shed and some basic tools. For the cost difference between DIY and paying somebody else to do it, you can buy some tools and/or more new parts.

Get this book. http://www.amazon.com/Rebuild-Volkswagen-air-Cooled-Engine-models/dp/0895862255/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209350922&sr=8-1

Hope this helps.
