What is this Weber?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/68831/what-is-this-weber

bertie_beetle ·

I was unable to find a site to identify my carby. Numbers on the carby are:

40 DCN 14 8K

It is a Weber, but other than that i have no idea. If anyone knows this model and any info on it, i'd be very appreciative.

Cheers,

barls ·

its a 40mm dnc ie a dual barrel synchronized. so a barrel for each side oft the engine

matberry ·

It's a 40 DCN, originally off an Alfa I think. Used for years as a single or dual, yours is oviously a single.
Or, if it was a trick question, 'A carburetor'

matberry ·

Beat me to the button Barls

barls ·

buy 3 minutes too

matberry ·

I had to go and check if carby had 2 t's or not!

matberry ·

How good is your maths??
FAST

barls ·

this is one of the reasons i work for the navy as a tech.

barls ·

actually the real reason i know is i got offered one years ago but ended up going the twin progressive instead

bertie_beetle ·

thank-you muchly!

its off my '71 which has been laying dormant in my yard for a few years. decided i might pull my finger out and do something about it. bit by tiny bit no less.

Cheers.

Hmmm!
Tell is more!
(without high-jacking that is)

vw54 ·

they work well i had one on my 1600 engine in about 1978 40DCN

matberry ·

Dave your showing your age. My first DCN was in 1980/81.
Yes they work quite well

Barls, a tech for the navy. Good stuff mate.

Dave I reckon Barls meant twin choke progressive, not twin progressive carbs.

vw54 ·

yep it ran nice
yes twin open chokes

not progressive both butterflies open at same time

you used to be able to by a twin set of carbies and mainifolds as well as the center mount single carby of course the IDAs and IDFs were much superior ( and still are ) for a twin carby set up and engine size

matberry ·

You tell the Berg's that.
I'm sure they are still trying to sell twin 42 DCNF kits.
Best part using them instead of IDF/IDA is the space in a sedan, for plug changes etc.

vw54 ·

the other option for the IDA /Fs is to cut access panels or holes in the inner guards to get the plugs out and check tighten the mainifolds as routine maintance

yeah well the Bergs were always slow I dont think they know about fuel injection as yet
they do tried and tested items that always sell and if its not in Hot VWs magazine then its way out there LOL 😂😂

Personally I dont like cutting inner guards. With the right tools and a good double jointed elbow you can maintain these.

About efi and the Bergs you better get your facts Dave.
The IDA/Efi manifolds that I raced with on the choptop (Haltech), '94-98,were Berg protos that they developed prior to that.
ps I think we shouldn't have hijacked this thread!

bertie_beetle ·

so what does DCN, IDA & IDF mean? i probably should research this myself, but i'm too lazy. 😂

matberry ·

They are all different models of Weber, there are many more too, but these most common for dak daks.

Joel ·

as alot of ppl know i love my dcn/f's

i still got a few under the house in twins and singles

theyre a great old carb and work well single (if u have manifold heat) or twins
the only complaint i ever had with them is the fuel bowls abit small so they dry up quick when sitting or when high speed cornering

b4 i shoved the blower on the 1776 i was running a pair of 40 DCNs of a ferrari dino on short scat manifolds
they have a very grunty roar to them even a single on a stock 1600 👍

jaryd that one of urs would be a dog around town cos it had no preheat
ive got one on that same manifold somewhere
the flange is crooked for some reason so they always look funny

Try this :

bertie_beetle ·

that is brilliant, thanks for that chief! will make things much easier!🙅

The DCN rebuild kits are hard to get and costly now days. If you need a kit let me know via PM and I can give you the suppliers details. Took me weeks to find someone.

bertie_beetle ·

after a bit of cosmetic cleaning. doesn't look so crappy after all.

Joel ·

rebuild kits are piece of piss to get

i get mine from carbguru theyre about $40

Adsman ·

Joel I wish I knew that before would have saved me heaps of time searching. I went to local shops to order and called around to Brisbane and Sydney shops that advertised on the web. Probably sent nearly $40 in phone calls. 😂 Jaryd it sounds like Joel might be onto a winner. If not that contact I gave you can help.
cheers

Joel ·

i just had a quick squiz hes still got them listed on ebay
for $42

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/WEBER-40-DCN-CARBURETTOR-KIT-FERRARI_W0QQitemZ250151840366QQihZ015QQcategoryZ6763QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247#ebayphotohosting

is it as complete as the kit u can get?
these have the essential parts but that may be where the price difference is

bertie_beetle ·

cheers. i just saw that one on ebay today too.

the gaskets on my one are shot, but that pump valve and fittings are fine. i really should have tried to test the carby out before i pulled the engine apart......... now i won't know whether the carb is junk or not. *slaps forehead*

Ta,
JP

Joel ·

there isnt much that can go wrong with them thats a hard fix and what is, is usually pretty obviuos - worn linkages, busted floats, broken mixture screws etc

Adsman ·

I got the same kit, cost me alot more though, but then again freight to QLD is a b__ch. My kit numbers are W31 from recarb no.
WE-845 replace 40DCN Ferrari/Fiat/etc. Comes with a nice picture too. Still wish I knew about carbguru 😢 Oh well still cheaper than paying $80/hr for a rebuild up here.😁

geodon ·

DCN = due corpe normale (?) : 2 bodies normal ie vertical?

DCOE = due corpe orizontale : 2 bodies horizontal

Sorry, my Dago is a bit rusty!

How does IDF and IDA fit in or, even DGAV for that matter?

type3kid ·

Matberry- you said you had your first in 80/81...

i wasn't born yet!!

hahahahahaha😂😂😂

geodon ·

Matberry! Dunno!! But I remember 40DCOE tranlation from Alfa 105's. My vocab is that of a 6yo lad so I can't even guess.

BTW, ur suck test for needle & seats worked- the one I took out leaked when u sucked but held when u blew in it.

Anthiron ·

if you want to sell the manifold im interested.
