I read somewhere that there were More type 3 volkswagens sold in Australia [per head of population]
than any other country..

maybe thats probably because we didn't get the 411 or 412 VWs...

Thats an interesting thought Lee.

I had not seen that comment though, but read another web site that listed cars by their collectors value. It was US based. And the poor lil' type 3, regardless if it was the early model, was down the bottom of the list for classic vw's. Makes ya wonder how rare they must be in the U.S. if it isn't classed as a collectable, however unless its just not their flavour over their. Of course, the common as a bird with feathers dub, the beetle, was on the top of the list. Wierd... i would have thought it would have been the karman Ghia :S

Sounded all pretty funky and wrong

yanks hate type 3's because a) they dont like the flat pancake engine and b) they dont like fuel injection which most of them are over there (maybe all, dont know). They arent widely known for their intelligence on any subject though huh 😉

Lee,
According to my Clayton production numbers there were 47456 T3 produced across all models in both 1500 and 1600cc including 748 T3 Panel Vans
They were all RHD versions,unlike the T2 where there were;
24 Splitty Single cabs
24 Splitty Double cabs
36 Splitty Kombis
12 Splitty Microbus
Not sure what the population headcount was 30 years ago but that does not sound like alot of vehicles per head.

I suppose Bill, what it means, is that there were not many type 3s in other countries in large numbers like the USA..

Karmann made Beetle cabriolets and Karmann Ghias are thought as anything special in the USA...

Karmann type 1 cabriolet [is called a Beetle vert} in the USA
they know nothing about coachbult handbuilt Karmann cars...
