what sort of springs & rockers Craig?
compression ratio?
greedy53 ·
and just a side note a fellow in melb has supercharged one running 10lb bost would you like his email could be an interesting conversation espaciallyt for hill climbs a massive amount of torque OH he and stan did it so its right
reub ·
Would guess this would be running reasonable compression?
Should get mineu on the dyno one of these days too 🙂

When are you going to the strip?
Good combo.
pete wood ·
but seriously, 138hp ATW from an under 2litre, natrually aspirated, 2v per cyl, pushrod 4 is very impressive. your not tempted to put some IDAs on it are you?
Mick058 ·
How do you ever know if your dyno is for true HP? The bigger reading you get, the more you can brag, the more money Mr Dyno makes....
In saying that, im not having a lend of Craig, i was blown away by the base 1916 without plugs, let alone the steriod with twin plugs.

I'm sure that's a real world figure. Craig has nothing to gain from pretend numbers. He already owns the titles. 👍

New member, second post. Picked up a 70 Ghia Vert recently. Looking at a restoration down the track, but aiming for mechanical reliability in the interim.
Spoke to Stan Pobjoy last week regarding the base 1916, but might be overkill for what I need. Not interested in 1/4 mile times, however a little get up n go with great reliability would be nice.
Any suggestions, feedback would be appreciated. I'm based in Sydney. Not sure if there are regular gtg, where I could get some advice and direction.
Sorry if this is O/T and hijacking the thread.
Cheers,
Nikos

And my understanding is that theres an old dyno scale and a new one.
Heard of a bloke that drove to one dyno and got one reading, then drove straight to another and got 25hp higher reading.
I'd like to dyno my car but want a true reading.
BeetleJuice ·
I thought it was a chassis dyno!❓JVLRacing wrote:All your power HPs will be measured to your flywheel!...

I thought a Dyno Dynamics with shootout mode standardises readings, allowing for climatic conditions, altitude etc. Therefore these dyno's Australia wide should be considered equal.Mick058 wrote:I thought shoot-out mode was the one that didn't add the 'boost'. Anyways, i reacken the drag is the real tester (even though gearboxes and drivers, weight etc make a difference). Heard of a guy with a bug that spent thousands on a dyno tune and was told he had an extra 20hp from the 'fine tuning', yet his 1/4 mile times were the same....hmmm, i wonder how effective the 'fine tuning' really was????

What I do find interesting is that no other dyno numbers from other forum members has been challenged or scrutinised in any way!
I guess DB will chime in.

A common way that people cheat with dyno figures even in shoot out mode is to alter BP (barometric pressure), if you look on the bottom of Craigs chart you will see BP: 101.5 which is the correct BP for dyno shop situated in Sydney.

Do the twin plug heads make that much difference ?
where is the second plug located ?
How much of a deviation from the standard 1916 pobjoy offerings ?

won't be on the strip for a few months yet. I've been removing all the swaybars, bracing and "hillclimb" stuff off the car. There is also rust I need to fix before it can be registered.............. and I would like to get 145hp out of the 1916 before I hit the drags !
I'm going to try a pair of 48 idf's next to see if that will help produce some more top end power. (although I haven't played with the 44's yet !)
Cheers

I put my sidewinder on the 58, as you know, but was suprised to hear it wasn't much quieter - the induction noise is still the loudest part of my car 😀
I've not had mine on the dyno - maybe this year though....
Baja Wes ·
Just a question, where did the operator have the intake air temp sensor? It was reading less than the ambient temperature which is quite odd. Usually it is the other way around. A lower than actual intake temp reading will actually give you a lower HP reading as it doesn't fully correct for the actual (higher) air temperature.

damn, been waiting so patiently for the resullts Craig.....is it just a carb change or others too?Craig Torrens wrote:I had to work yesterday so unfortunately i didnt make the dyno.............will keep you informed.

Well done Craig. Great figures. Looking forward to reading how you get to 145. The IDA might just be that missing piece. Hope you can make the 23rd.
I recently rode in a Pobjoy 1916 powered type I. The chap that owns it was having lots of fuel pressure problems. Surging coughing and dying in the slightest change of slope. Anyhow with that sorted I was amazed with the torque and rev range it produced seemingly effortlessly. When I thought we were doing 60 the speedo was saying 100 (kph) and when i thought we were doing 100 the speedo was reading 160 (kph). It was an amazing afternoon.
Thanks for posting Craig.

Don't I know it... the cops made mine stick out further due to her very poor driving skills. The new exhaust doesn't stick out as far.... just have to take it out from under my bed and spend a few hundred bucks at the panel beater. yay.. 🙁Craig Torrens wrote:sticks out a tad further......which is good and bad. Good= you can get to the bolts easier Bad= It will mean that the muffler will stick out further, and probably more likely to be "cop bait" !! 😂

Is it quicker on the run to the dyno shop or quicker on the run home

What a great spread of power and revs it freckle off. Can't say I have ever experienced a motor like that before.
Driveable, torque from the get go. Short shift it or wring it's neck -
I just have to remove mine and get it to Stan.
Stan is the man! 😁

Plus my bug is just a car not a race car.
I'm not a racer I'm a team owner as Rose likes racing them not me.😂
We go to heaps of vw events so it's hard to fit them all in.

So Ian, are you actually going to come to WSID and run a proper 1/4mile or is your little subi only capable of 1/8th mile closed country runways ???? 😂😂

actually beginning to re-think my 1600 thread... 😎

cause yours is a race car, look at that monster tacho and that big shift light😂
We go to Portland, Warwick, vw supersprints, Gunnedah several times and rose uses four of our cars.
all the racers ask her where her Tacho is and they look at her funny when she says she don't have one😂 she changers gear when she needs to😂😂😂
