Thought this might be better here than in members rides.
Since the decommissioning of my white '70 beetle that I used to drive/race with the turbo, this is what now has all my attention.
Although I’m not going to post it as a build up, it's passed the point of no return so I’ll just post the odd progress pic. It's nothing that hasn't been done before.
It's a '60 Aussie built beetle and plans are to make it for the track only and as such has had all non essential stuff removed including all the window mechanisms and side glass which is now lexan.
It will still be built under the TAT scope but I will spend money where it is needed particularly in making it safe. I have so far replaced the MC all the wheel cylinders, new brake shoes all drums machined amd all new wheel bearings. New g'box is in progress with Dangerous Dave and I will mount the old 100 ci turbo to it.
Colour scheme at this stage will be satin black with silver flashes to match the aluminium panels at this stage.
This what it started as a couple of months ago.
May look familiar to some. I think I may have posted some pics earlier.
Stripped and ready for the games to begin.
Upgraded to a duel circuit MC. Have run a new line from front to rear.
Front g'box mount was broken so decided after some advice, to fab an intermediate mount. Thanks Dave.
Also now has a removeable apron and have done away with the wings between firewall and inner guard.
Couple of pics of the new dash.
Inside is plain and simple in satin black and aluminium rear panels and door cards.
These are the wheels I recently purcahesed. May also look familiar to some.

Any progress shots Stanley?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Yeah Stanley I've heard you have been a busy bee lately....
Stanley ·
Yes I have been busy. As you guys would now you get to a stage where you have to do all the little fiddly jobs so it looks like there is no progress
Thanks to westi and in particular Dangerous Dave I was able to take possession of my super duper gearbox and whack it in. That said I went to get the drums machined and found they would be way oversize after machining so I am just waiting to get some new rear drums.
The first pic shows the gear box in. Sorry but no innovation here except the front mount is gone and I've fabbed a new mid mount.
Pic 2 is the front completely finished bar shocks. So far I have new dual circuit MC and reservoir, all new wheel cylinders, brake pads, bearings, seals and steel lines.
Everything else is from my old white beetle.
Pic 3 is the dash with seat and belts all finished.
Currently I am prepping all the guards, decklid and rear apron for undercoat and fuel tank for paint and I have a week of in a week’s time at which time it will be painted. Then all the Perspex windows and ally door panels can go on.
dangerous ·
Ah!
Nice work Dude,
great progress!
Dak-A-Tak ·
Starting to take shape Stanley ,if you didn't get head lights and hand brake stuff ,ect give me a call mate .
Peter P
Stanley ·
thanks Pete. All I am after is the chrome rings and the ratchet for the handbarke.
I'll give you a call though over the next few days.
90% finished prepping the guards. Already to have the underside painted then i'll bolt them on temporarily for some spot putty and a final light sand before I start on the body.
My back is rooted from being bent over all day filling and sanding. I made the mistake of sticking them in an acid tank which meant that someones previously good work was undone. They looked way better before they were stripped.
I'll have to take out another couple of kgs somewhere to make up for the filler. the body however is in vgc and will require minimal filling but a lot of sanding to get rid of the chalky layers of paint.
Bear in mind this is not a resto just a tidy up.
Cheers

kroozzn63 ·
pics pics please
Stanley ·
I just finished the first coat of primer and I'm not entirely happy with the result. I was using a high build etch primer with (I think) too small a nozzle which lead to a mixed result. Tried a mixture of paint to thinner ratios and air pressure but ultimately had to thin it too much to get it to cover. As a result no pic until the second coat which hopefully will go on better with a different spray gun.
I also gotta keep reminding myself what it's going to be used for so there is no need to get too anal about the result.
That means only one thing....more sanding. Although I have been banned from the shed until 10.00am tomorrow.
kroozzn63 ·
QUICK RESPONSE IM IMPRESSED
humpty ·
Don't worry Andrew.... I'm use to waiting for shit to happen... All in good time.😏
Dasdubber ·
Hey Andrew, I use a 2mm tip on my primer gun when spraying high build. You can get away with a 1.8 but if you are using a 1.4 it can be very slow going. Over reducing can cause it to lose some of its high build qualities. You can speed up the sanding process if you have a palm sander (shorter throw than normal dual action) - spray a light guide coat then hit it with say 400 on the d/a palm sander but not taking it all off.....depending on which colour you are painting (and what paint) you can then shoot another quick guide coat and hand sand with 600 or 800 (wet) before paint. If you sand the high build by hand from the start and you have a lot of orange peel or dry spray (possible with small tip) it will take a long time. Everyone does it different so if Helbus, matberry, rexy, DubCrazy or the other guys who have experience in this area reading this has alternative advice/ideas that would be great. The above is just what works for me.
Al
Stanley ·
Thanks Al.
The gun I was using was a 1.4. It's fine for normal primer and finish coat but struggles with the high build. It was very slow going. I have another gun now so will sand and try again. I did end up with some dry spray in those hard to get areas which really pissed me off as this will take time to fix. The other thing which freaked me out was the primer was a mustard yellow colour when I was expecting a traditional grey. With it over reduced to apply it took a lot to get it to cover.
Thanks again
Stanley ·
It's amazing what a different spray gun is like. The new gun I used also had a 1.4 tip but it was 100% better than my other one. Don't know if the gravity feed made a difference but it was great.
Still not 100% happy with the undercoating. I think the damage was done with the first coat but I can't be bothered spending countless hours fixing it. The sanding and application of the second coat has fixed a lot of the imperfections.
The yellow is a shit colour to spray because in the light I had it was almost impossible to see the spray as it went on which made it difficult to get a good overlap.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Looking good so far Stanley. You ready to rob a bank yet and leave no fingerprints after all that sanding ???
westi ·
you could always use a paint brush.lol
Dasdubber ·
You could leave it as is and run it in high build primer on the strip.....I can see big old school metalflake lettering down the side "BUTTERCUP BANDIT"
hehehe....it is a nice yellow mate 😁
Dak-A-Tak ·
Great undercoat colour , for yellow .As what I used for mine a little more orange but ( delux's 2k )
Looks like the Banana splits drag bug ! Good name 😁 Not the, she colour that guys over the boarder love !
Looking good mate .
punchbuggyracer ·
Isnt that yellow stuff 'primer putty filler'? I dont know if it can go straight on bare metal. I used it on my first beetle, the results were great, I used big bits of cut up boogy board to sand it back, it left nice curves.
Stanley ·
Was going to wait untilit was finished to put more pics up but Dave has coaxed me to add some.
Put the engine in on Saturday mainly so I could see if the spring plates needed resetting and to see hoe the rear wheels sat. Seems to be ok at the moment but the front needs to come down some.
Wiring is underway and hopefully I can start putting the lexan windows in next weekend. Also need to fit the traction bar from the white beetle so some new brackets will need fabbing. I also need to pinstripe around silver flash. Still in two minds exactly what I will use yet.
Other than that it's getting there, although I did discover the rear apron won't fit without some serious cutting. Might run without it yet.
Stanley ·
Bonnet is still waiting final paint thanks to the recent rain.
And thanks to Peter Page for the f/glass headlights.
HGFS ·
Hey Stanley love your work, you cant beat a turbo'd early drag car.
Can you tell me what size & offset the rear wheels are, the fitment looks just perfect with the fender width etc. If it comes down a bit the tops would tuck nicely into the fenders wouldn't they?
I'm hoping for a similar setup on my 59 when I get to that bit.

Milestone today with the engine started after a complete re-wire.
Only major jobs left to do now is fit rear brake hoses and lines and bleed brake circuit and I can take it for a drive.
Apart from that I need to get some rear shocks and fit some stops to prevent positive camber which is why the rear guards are still off.
Then just some small tidy up jobs and it's ready for Warwick

Spiffy battery box.
What did you make the"flash trim" from?

"flash trim" is just silver pinstripe. Couldn't get any chrome pin stripe. Not entirely happy with it but It will do for now.

Test drove it today after getting all the brakes working. Was expecting a leak from the long tube where it goes into the tee block but that didn't happen so all bled and working well.
I think I freaked a few of the neighbours out driving around with slicks and no rear guards.
drives well except it's bloody noisey
HGFS ·
Nice going. What's the worst part of the noise, exhaust or just because there's no interior or sound deadening etc?
Type of stuff that needs earplugs??

Awesome news.... Now please get us a video.... I wanna hear this baby running!!!!

All ready for Warwick
I was going to say finished but I don't think it will ever be finished. All it needs is a wheel alignment which is happening tomorrow morning and then it will wrapped in cotton wool until Warwick. Which is a good thing because now I can have a volksy free weekend next weekend for my wedding anniversary.
It will be running without a rear apron and decklid. mailnly because the rear apron needs cutting around the exhaust and I don't want to do that so I can use it when the turbo comes off?????. With no rear apron pointless running a decklid, plus it's not painted.
Must also take this opportunity to thank, apart from the guys on this forum for their encouragement, Pete Page for supplying the car, Rod Richardson for the shiny wheels and for their encouragement and advice along the way and special thanks to Dave Butler for all the help, support and advice (not to mention building a super box). And westi I haven't forgotten about the beer I promised.
Anyway here's some pics of my Tight Arse drag car.

thanks everyone....yeh I can't wait for Warwick....all though I must admit nerves are starting to creep in.
Had the wheel alignment today. All was good. Managed to ensure I had some rear toe in. Funny thing was the guy who did it was a great kid but was less than half the age of the car. Noticed him going round and round the rear until he finally came in and said..."how do I adjust the rear". Took him out and explained how it all worked.
Boss didn't end up charging me because he said his tech learnt more from the experience. Can't ask for better service than that so if you're out Ipswich way see Crooks tyre and mechanical.
Also nothing like a beetle with slicks to draw a crowd....😂

I still get nerves on the first pass of the day after nearly 18 years.

Stanley ·
My turn.
What a fantastic weekend. The quality and effort to produce these cars blew me away. Pete’s car looked great and ran equally as well. Westi’s car was outstanding, as were the pink shirts, Rod and the chop top were on song, Troy’s fasty will be one to watch out for and of course Mr consistency Dave Butler was unbeatable as usual.
All the other guys who made up the fields all deserve kudos for making it a great weekend. No complaints, except maybe the dust and well done to Craig (VWMA) and the Warwick track officials for putting on a great event.
My car exceeded my expectations with a best time of 8.39 and best speed of 81mph. Not bad for small block. ¾ of a second faster than last year and 7mph quicker with the same engine. Just goes to show what a bit of weight reduction, slicks and a Dave Butler gearbox can do.
Only let down was an accelerator cable which busted a strand and seized in the outer at full throttle. Made for an interesting trip around onto the return road.
Time now for some more weight reduction and a set of adjusters in the front beam to lose the baja look then off to the quarter in time. Thanks again to all for a great weekend
You gotta be stoked with that Andrew!!!! Top effort mate.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Top job Stanley. Only saw one of your runs from the staging lane and car looked like it was doing all the right things!!
Looking forward to a Volksy test and tune at Willowbank soon. Troy is keen once he gets full tune done and is getting full throttle!!
Stanley ·
Yeh…I’m keen for a T&T at Willowbank but want to pull the front beam and fit some adjustors and maybe narrow it an inch or two first. Baja’s just aren’t meant to run on the quarter.

Before you get excited and think I have pictures od 100ci engine carnage, sorry there just trailer pics.
This is why I haven't pulled out yet.
At the mo although the CofG is exactly where I worked out it would be I've decided the car sits too far forward so i'm going to bring the car and axle back 5 inches. Rather than cut the old spring hangers off and weakening the frame, I'll just weld another set on and it can then be used for front engined cars I guess.
More on engine carnage soon.
humpty ·
How's the balance Andrew.... From memory you'll be wanting around 70kg on the tow ball for it pull nicely.... I'd check that first...
Nice long drawbar though... Will make for a sweet tow...

Nice long drawbar though... Will make for a sweet tow...
Lancers towbar is only rated at 100kgs. At the moment with the ramps in place I have 25kg on the tow ball.
Would be happy with a bit more so I'll fix it up.
and yes Dave it's amazing what you can find at work lying around.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
those wheel chocks would be rated to hold more weight than your car could ever weigh I'm guessing as well as power....
Boostn ·
looking good.
I think it was around 85kg on the draw bar, not 100% though.
looks like it's going to need more than 5 inches back.
remember it's about getting the car to the drags not a trailer comp like a mate of mine did.
Dak-A-Tak ·
I'd move the car back so it doen't over hany at front and move axle back on trailer so it's at 3/4 of car length ( about kill switch area ). Looks like it might bend at rear if you leave it like that ,remember the movement when traveling alone (like bending wire to brake it )
I need some wheel chocks too !!!😂
VWFREAK ·
Awesome job, I'd better pull my finger out ad finish my drag car, can't let you blokes have all the fun.
Stanley ·
Well after some minor mods I load tested the trailer today.
What better way to test than to put something heavy on it. The notch weighs around 900kgs
Ended up making a small subframe from angle to sit the chassis rails on. This can then be moved fwd or back for different cars. I just need to raise the mudguards a bit as the notch was almost touching. Not a problem with the beetle but better to do it now. Paint and wire to go.
Now all thats done I can pull the engine from the beetle and find out the damage.
Cheers
Stanley ·
Well here the result of the T&T just before Christmas.
Didn't find any shiny bits in the oil which was a good sign.
Pulled the heads off and they all looked good.
But then looked in number 1 and this is what I found.
Thought this was going to be it until I pulled the barrels from 3 and 4.
These were dodgy 2nd hand pistons fitted with new rings and mated to new barrels.
This happened after 28 runs and 12months of street driving.
I'll see whats waiting for me inside.
humpty ·
Ouch..... BANG!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
I was pretty close on my guess Stanley. I said broken rings or collapsed piston but when you do a job you sure do it properly!!

Ah well Stanley, bit worse than a rocker cover gasket, but could be worse.
Tough 1600 to run a 13.5 on three cylinders.
westi ·
time for a holley, f$#@#$@$ k the forgy's.then simply add more boost.i see 12's in the near future.
Stanley ·
Been thinking of a Holley on and off for a while. The SU has been good in that it was easy to mount and they are simple. Down side is they are slow to respond and somewhat frustrating to tune. If I could get a holley manifold that didn't look like a piece of modern art I would certainly consider it. If you know where I can get a manifold westi let me know.
I don't like to give up on things to easily unless i'm really flogging a dead horse. I think 12's are a cert with this setup with some more tinkering. So for now i'll atleast stick with the 1641. 100ci has a nice ring to it.
any input welcome
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Actually.... I hear that when you dump your VW, your economy improves on account of the smaller frontal area....
Robo ·
The reduced area between the floorpan and the road surface actually causes a slight vacuum (negative pressure) this in turn sucks the car to the road surface causing drag. You see I have tried it all before, No matter what I do I still can not beat the factory settings and specs.
Stanleys a good bloke, thats why I persevere with trying to help him see the error of his ways

Fair point Robo but knowing a little bit about aerodynamics there's only one response to your arguement.
3 inch roof chop.......😎
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Why worry about Aerodynamics if you don't plan on going fast Robo??😂
Robo ·
Roof chop
Well ya see Volkswagen thought that the best way to get the car to slice through the wind was to make the body shape similar to an areoplane wing something your very familiar with. You see the lift the factory design/roof height provides reduces the rolling weight/resistance that the engine has to overcome, witch in turn allows you to go faster. If you chop the roof 3 inches you loose this advantage. The factory once again comes out on top! I think we better have a coffee together at the pie shop and I can impart some more factory wisdom on you, all it will cost you is a chocky donut!
Almost forgot to answer Brenndan!
Well when I was born the speed limit in the city was 35mph! so when I crank up the 56 (oval) to 65 thats effectively almost double the limit. To get the same thrill today you would have to beat 220kmh! So I recon Im a bit of a speed deamon and have done my time as a delinquent speed freak juvinile and lived to tell the tale. My life now is devoted to keeping the youngsters of today alive!

Well after almost 6 months to the day since I put a window in a piston the TAT is running again with some new mods.
Since then I have added a counterweighted crank, ARP rod bolts, deep sump, heavier valve springs and retainers, comp ratio from 6.5:1 to 8.3:1, welded fan and stage 1 Kennedy clutch. (and obviously new pistons and barrels)
Additional mods are an MSD 6AL and wideband O2 sensor.
Car mods are small ally fuel tank and a fully overhauled front end with adjusters (no more baja look)
I actually had the engine in the car last weekend trying to fire it up but had a minor hicup which forced me to pull it and take the heads and two barrels off. All will be revealed when I get my virus ridden computer back from the computer shop Monday. Lets just say high humidty was not my friend.
pics soon
and thanks for your advice along the way Dave.
dangerous ·
So.......
Wheres the pics dude?!
Stanley ·
yeh yeh....trying to do this at work but boss won't leave me alone at the mo.
This is what happens when you crank an engine with the spark plugs removed trying to get oil pressure on a cold and rainy winters night and then let it sit over night even with a sheet over it.
It tends to make this awful noise the next day when you go to start it. Lucky it didn't start and I was patient enough to go looking for the noise.
Looks a lot worse than it was, however I had to get two of the barrels lightly honed.
Live and learn
Stanley ·
But now it's all fitted up has been running. Dumped the oil and changed the filter with no nasty surprises.
Now I just need to install the MSD and wideband ready for TnT after dyno day.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Making some good progress Stanley. Should run some good numbers with new combo!!
humpty ·
Great news Andrew.... I needed that impetus to extract my digit.... So have you got a date for TnT track time?
typethreeking ·
good to here stanley, should be interesting to see what it will do at the test and tune, might have to have a run together???
Dak-A-Tak ·
Hope it's 25th July after Dyno day 🙅
Stanley ·
yes it will be July 25th.
Busily mounting and connecting wideband and MSD at the mo.
Here is a pic of the new fuel tank complete with F111 fuel cap.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Will you be fitting F111 afterburners as well to entertain the crowd??? LOL that would be spectacular....
typethreeking ·
whos cleaning your fuel tank stanley???
Stanley ·
Finally finished and ready for dyno day drags.
MSD and wideband are in although the readout for the wideband wasn't working so it's gone back.
Best of all I put it on the trailer I built for the first time today and towed it with my Lancer. It has a max towing capacity of 1000kg's so I took it to the registered weigh bridge where I had the tralier weighed and they came in at 960kg's. Trailer on same scale was 360kg's so car must weigh 600kg's
typethreeking ·
600kg, man thats light, do you have glass doors and guards on that car??
humpty ·
Damn good effort mate.... Loving how the trailer matches the Bug too.... Now you need to get you tow car in the same colour scheme and you'll be looking so hot! 😉
Stanley ·
ok here we go again.
Pulled the engine down yesterday after the dyno day drag night.
Let me paint the pic before you guys clip me around the ears. Sitting in the staging lanes for almost 3 hours in 12 deg. my car is a pig to start with a cold SU and I've been caught out with a flat battery trying to crank in the staging lanes before. To prevent this again I started the car every 20mins or so to avoid this.
Only problem in doing so I inadvertantly ran the tank level down to a point where it most likely sucked a gut full of air.
Result....after fiting a brand new set of Mahle pistons and barrels and doing break in and one 15sec run.
4 rooted pistons, one of which was starting to create a window and 3 of which were minus the skirts not to mention scoring to the barrels.
Now I could be all bitter and twisted but now I get to spend more time in my shed doing what i love doing although pissing $500 into the wind keeps me awake.
Whats next.....I'm going from 87mm to 85.5 for some extra barrel thickness and i'm (read DB is) going to machine the skirts off the pistons as I''ve got a full set of perfectly good 87mm pistons without skirts but are of no use.
Can't see the point in the skirts except for generating debris to float around in the case. if i'm wrong I'll take it on the chin.
I still plan to run into the 12's or better so stay tuned. Can't wait for Warwick because it always works their.
Dasdubber ·
Sorry to hear of your continuing woes mate. Those bloody Harleys - I bet none of them had to idle too long since they had three runs in the time all you guys had one!
Al
humpty ·
Dang that some bad luck.
polak ·
that sux dude, we have the same problem here at WSID on a wed night, i once waited 1.5 hrs just to run once and then have some idiot drop oil all down the track so by the time they finished cleaning up, a few people ran and they sent the rest of us home as it had gone past the close time 👎
Stanley ·
Stripped the rest of the motor on the w'end and all is good.
bearings are perfect so just a seal kit and new 85.5 P&Ps to replace the 87's.
I'm looking at it as practice building engines. Trouble is i need practice looking in my fuel tank.
Boostn ·
Hey Stanley it's all part of the fun.
Try to get some pistons that have holes behind the oil ring not slots, they are much stronger.
Have you thought of putting a dcoe on it? It will pick up power!
chunks54 ·
Hey Stanley, love your car & engine setup, its a very neat install.
Just a quick one regarding your skirt problems (and I don't want to tell my grandma how to suck eggs here, so tell me to shut up by all means!) but a couple of things to check: first off I have been told that a c/w crank even at a stock stroke will limit your choice of pistons... secondly I dunno if you're using stock rods, but if you are they have offset small ends and need installing a particular way around.
One good thing if you drop to 85.5's is that it will ease of detonation a little with the reduction in CR.
(but you know you'll want to run more boost right?! hahaha).
Out of curiosity, what fuel are you running? How good is Aus. pump gas? Here in the UK petrol's pretty good really. I'm currently looking into using E85 in mine for better anti-det. properties, do you guys get that?
Good luck anyway, it looks awesome!
polak ·
a few pumps in nsw have e85, from memory there is one in eastern creek...... iv heard...... so its not very widely available yet.... they are looking to introduce more soon though..... should be something to look into, apparently u dont loose any power and gain safety but it does use a bit more fuel due to the alco content.....
20bkombi ·
Any progress stanley?
LOWBUG ·
Dude, Hav'nt read much of this thread but that that looks like its pinged its nut off all the way, what comp, and boost are you running. Also from what I've learnt Mahl pistons are not a fully forged piston, only the top 5mm is forged and won't handle the pain your giving it. Remember such through systems have no way of cooling the intake air. Hate to burst you bubble.
Good luck, turbo's are nice but a takes alot to get them right especialy on an aircooled engine.
Boostn ·
Such positive words..............
The Mahle pistons are semi forged not fully forged.
They are more than enough for Stanley's ride and when he has fuel in the tank they will be fine.
I have made over 200 rwkw with Mahle 94's and Marks green bug that just ran tens has Mahle 92's. YES 92's!!!
Get back into it Stanley it will be fine, even with that stinky carbie! More boost and methanol inject it!
dangerous ·
Stanley(Andrew) will have it ready by the time Warwick is here.
New pistons are ready to go on and everything else is in tip-top shape.
I love the stories about mahle pistons.
Sanley was using cast 87s and we are about to try ome more cast pstons, but this time in 85.5 size.
It is after all a very low budget operation....."Tight Arse Tuesday".
The 94s are a forged piston.
You cant cast half and forge the rest.
In fact the 94s used to be the same forging as the 92, only larger on the outside,(see inside says 92),
but I have not seen a new set lately...perhaps tey have changed their manufactuing method?
Wallys set made 280+ wheel, and have held up for years.
...but there is no doubt that there are stronger forged pistons out there,
but the mahle does have a specific market that they are designed for.
They are very affordable.
Yes once Stanley keeps the fuel tank full he should be set.
Build it.

LOWBUG wrote:Also from what I've learnt Mahl pistons are not a fully forged piston, only the top 5mm is forged and won't handle the pain your giving it.
The reason why they have been labeled not fully forged and only semi forged is because the moulds used are not as strong as the a full forged mould thus not being allowed to be pressurised/weight as much as a full forge like a Je.
This is a much cheaper option and is still forged, and as we know more than enough for most VW's around. This is why you have the cast type look inside the piston and a Je is nice and smooth. The cast pistons have pieces of steel in them for strength.
How fast has yours gone?
This little rocket has gone 8.3@77mph
Stanley ·
Wholly shit I've been slack.
Actually i've been doing a course on CATIA 3D modelling...now that is the shit.
As DB said 85.5 pistons have been sourced and we've machined the skirts to clear the CW crank and hopefully to stop them breaking off by other means.
Can I add at this point that the only reason I have had dramas ie lean out, is purely from sucking air from running the tank too low on both occasions. Prior to that I drove it for 18 months ran some rounds of the willowbank street series and Warwick. The damage on both occasions was a result of one run.
Engine is going back together next weekend and will be running the weekend after ready for Warwick. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post. All comments welcomed +ve or -ve.
And your right Nick the SU was ok for original intention but has out lived it's use. I do have a plan that involves either a holley or side draft weber/dellorto and methanol. It may also include a supercharger.....😏
Also a guy was having a look at it over the weekend. After I explained it was an Aussie built german beetle with a turbo off a nissan and a dissy from a mitsubishi along with some other bits which aren't standard he commented that it was a bit like frankenstein. My daughter thought that was pretty funny so that is what it has now been christened.

bit of progress for Warwick
1st pic is the pistons modifed by DB. I've gone from 87mm back to 85.5 but hopefully with some tweaking It will go faster than before.
2nd is a pic of the rear where i've cut more out to make engine removals and access to heads better.
In doing so I lost my bumper mounts so I had to find an alternate way to support the forks. I've run some flat from the rear mount to the shock towers. Not the best but I don't lanch hard so this should be fine for now.
last pic is the engine ready to go back in again after assembly yeaterday and today....although shed is out of bounds on fathers day....apparently.

What a fantastic weekend. Great event, Great cars, Great people and Great racing. Well done Craig and track staff.
It was good to catch up with all the usuals and those who I hadn't met before.
From my perspective and for those interested, Frankenstein (formerly known as the TAT) performed well and best of all I drove it off the trailer when I got home.
First run was purely to keep an eye on the AF meter with it around 12.5 – 13 at WOT. This proved the lack of fuel in the tank was the previous problem.
On the last run I finally remembered to check the boost to find it was only running 4.5psi compared to the 10.5 previously.
This would have been the case all weekend. I suspect I have a leak somewhere in the system which could also explain the pinging sound a couple of people heard after checking tappets and timing.
After 7 runs
Best ET - 8.55 (last year 8.39)
Best MPH - 78.81 (last year 81.0)
Best 60ft – 1.804
And best light - .407
This was after reducing the capacity from 1641cc to 1585cc and having less than half the boost of last year. Other differences from last year, CW crank and an MSD. Everything else is stock
Thanks to my boys for coming up and helping their “old man” out and special mention to Dangerous DB for his help and wisdom
Next is to find the source of the lack of boost and if it’s an easy fix I’m keen to get down the quarter without a breakage. It was hard to start prior to the last run and didn’t idle well when I got home. I’m hoping this might be a vacuum leak and the source of the missing boost and not an internal problem.
As for next year, the plan is to install a half cage, fit a narrowed beam, do away with turbo, fit an SC14 Toyota blower, different carb, and switch to methanol. Why? Because I like to tinker.

To the Brothers Alder…the Eels can hold their heads up after coming from 8th in the finals to only lose the GF by one try and a field goal that came about through a dodgy decision by the ref. Look out next year. And what are you guys doing supporting a Melbourne team. Is there something we should know about your heritage?.....😀
westi..."supercharger?.nice one on the backwards step, how many supercharged cars ran well on the weekend?

Thanks westi…value your comment as always and you could be right, however there's a reason to try a SC to see if I can get it to work. I have a theory that a SC on my small displacement motor can work better than the turbo. If I’m wrong I’ll take it on the chin and put the turbo back on and you can say ‘I told you so”...👍 Plus I’m not 100% happy with the installation of mine. And yes I love the sound. Still have a boner over the CBB beetle.
Colonel Mustard…1 ¾ SU carb, T02 turbo from Nissan exa and home made manifold.
Mick…No worries any time. Next time your at Karana Downs let me know and we’ll catch up. I wish I could have followed you so I could have looked at your car longer.
Humpty…stop talking and get yours finished......😀

Mate I support any team who isn't from Sydney plus most of the players from Melbourne are from Qld anyway LOL
But yes the Eels did do well to come from the bottom of the top 8 to make the GF and rewrote the history books in doing so!!
Stanley ·
Can't believe it's been since October last year since i've added anything.
Anyway, i'm in the process of fitting a blower but got side tracked after playing around with a 3D modelling program and finding a mob who can laser cut from my drawings.
So I decided to do a narrowed front beam from scratch. So between DB and myself we came up with this and made 2.
My beam has been narrowed 65mm and fitted with avis adjusters. 65mm means I don't have to mess with the inner guard. Trial fit up prior to powder coating was good. weighs 2.4kg's lighter to boot.
Not using bearings but some DB machined Delrin bushes. I'll post some more pics when I get all the fruit fittrd
humpty ·
Nice beam..... Been thinking about building my from scratch instead of modding stockers.... Might still go down that road...
By the way.... My 90mm narrowed beams fit without any modes to the body!!!!

cool....I just wanted to narrow enough to get rid of the baja look. I will need to modify (read remove) the headlight buckets....damn dragstars
humpty ·
Any news on the SC front Andrew?
Stanley ·
SC is on the backburner for a while or I won't make it to Warwick. So in the interim I'm going to stick with the turbo but do some minor upgrades.
After some guidance by DB I’m going different heads with bigger valves, bigger cam and flicking the SU and fitting a Holley. The Holley will also double as a SC carb when the time comes.
I also want to do away with the fan and genny and fit an alternator. To cool I will look at either kombi electric fan or CB drag fans but I don't believe they will fit as they will foul a standard manifold. Losing the fan is not set in stone yet for obvious reasons. If anybody has any thoughts on this feel free to chime in.
reub ·
Any updates dude?

For the record.... I have just lodged the paperwork with the Department of Transport, in an effort to make my car street legal.... Hopefully it will all go back on the POS real soon!

Stanley is away at the moment.
He found a nice virgin set of 040 heads,
and had the spark plug hole welded up.
I am fitting larger valve seats for him,
and will rough out one cylinder's chamber and ports for him to duplicate.
Probably go for a 40mm inlet and 35.5 exhaust.

Nice Dave, heaps of meat left between seats. Your own seats obviously, no stability issues with such a narrow seat?

matberry wrote:Nice Dave, heaps of meat left between seats. Your own seats obviously, no stability issues with such a narrow seat?
Never had a seat move yet.
They are thicker than they appear, especially exhaust.
These are actually thicker than the stock seat,
but have used very narrow seats before.
Secret to seating stability is correct interference,
realistic head temps and good valve control.
Aluminium bronze seat material helps to maintain the interference at any head temp,
and also transfers heat into the head casting better than the iron/steel based factory seat.
My own engines use 260lbs of seat tension and a narrow seat, with excellent consistency.

Yes mate, agree 100%, most of my builds I'm working with a seat that's already there, it's nice to see such a nice, narrow seat.
Thicker than stock.. only just, I might even guess the same, taking into account /mm of diameter. 🙂

With Warwick only weeks away I thought it was time to get some work done on the car and go with a few minor changes.
Most notable is the SU has gone and has been replaced by a 600 holley with vac secondaries. This also meant a new manifold made by Westi who also made me a catch tank aswell. Both items look great and fit perfectly.
Other addition is some new heads (view previous posts) that have had the plug ports welded up then sent to DB for new holes to be drilled and bigger valves to be fitted. Some porting was also done. Also fitted a narrowed beam and lowered it more now the tyres don't scrub.
Displacement has gone back to 1641 and hopefully I can last Warwick without cracking the pistons again. Hopefully the carb and some timing changes will help.
Actually i'm just hoping the carb works as hoped. Might take the SU just in case
Cheers
and thanks again to Westi and DB.

Warwick for me this year will be a test and tune. Focus is on getting it down the 1/4 without breaking pistons.
It's only managed one pass down the 1/4 and was on it's way to posting a respectable time (13.50 - 88mph) before breaking some pistons before the line and slowing. Best 1/8 is 8.39 - 78mph

yep all running after a minor problem. Couldn't get it to idle with the holley originally but have since found and and fixed problem.
Holley seems to have made a difference. Revs much crisper now and has no flat spots or hesitation. Hope this is the same on the track.
Still does my head in seeing a 600 holley working on a 1600 volksy. Sounds different too with Daves heads.
Just need to hook up a throttle cable.
and no...not forgrtting the ausssies. It's just that a holley on a volksy in the US is like having owned a HQ.
Funny thing is I was all set to modify the holley to be boost sensitive as per what i've read but then when I asked some questions was told not to worry and just run bigger jets and a smaller power valve. So that's what i've done. Time will tell.
Maybe I should order some new pistons.....🤪
ian.mezz ·
I think I seen some where on here how to make your holley work its best???? I am sure there was a vid , but I just cant find it.🤪🙅🤪
Well after a top weekend at Warwick in spite of the rain I managed 3 runs into the 7’s with a best of 7.77 @ 87mph.
This was with the new front end, a new (old) set of heads with bigger valves and some porting work. The biggest unknown was the addition of the 600 Holley.
There were different schools of thought on boost referencing but I settled on no referencing with a 3.5 power valve and started with 60 jets.
I noticed it would only idle for about 15-20secs before the AF showed it getting lean and would eventually stop unless you revved it. I assumed it was draining the fuel bowls increased the fuel pressure which fixed the problem. I did have a blocked jet at one stage to which required a clean.
After the first clean run (which saw the wheels spin on a damp track and the back step out) I decided to fit a 2.5PV and go up to 65 main jets. AF meter showed it was not lean under boost.
However on the last run, after I increased the boost and at the end of the run I could smell oil in the car and noticed vapour out of the breather so decided that was it.
Yesterday pulled the engine out and pulled the barrels and pistons to find a small portion of land between the oil ring and bottom comp ring had broken away on No 3 only. Everything else looked ok. Plugs and pistons showed no signs of being lean but maybe rich if possible. Don’t know if the damage started on the 1st run or the last. Timing was limited to 22deg by the way.
Not sure where to go from here as far as pistons. Is it just that 87mm pistons are the problem? Maybe if I go slightly bigger jets I’ll be right. Thinking about Nissan SR20 pistons as they come in 87mm and have the same gudgeon diameter as a volksy. Not sure on how the deck would end up though. These pistons are around $750 for a set so thinking long and hard about this.
I’m keen to get back on fitting the blower but am also keen to see what it would do on the 1/4. Anyhow if anyone’s got any ideas before I deplete the world market on 87mm pistons I’m all ears.

what about doing a quick run on the dyno to see whats really happening, could be something easy to fix before spending heaps on new pistons..just a thought anyway, would be interesting to see the results..Troy

Hey Stanley,
The tune up might be fine?
You need a piston with holes under the oil ring not a slot. The slots will always break.
I think that the cheapest way to solve this problem is to get some 94s and up it to a 1915.
I don't see the big deal in doing the 1600cc thing. The 1915 will run 11's with that holley and be VERY reliable.
You could always offset grind the crank to de-stroke it if it's that important to you.
But that's just crazy!

Hey Stanley just my 2 cents, but I recon you could probally use a new set of engine studs and nuts.yours must be nearly worn out!

I don't Simon. The couple of glances I took at the AF gauge going across the line showed between 10 and 11. But your're right it could be lean, but shows no signs (other than piston damage) Can't log with my wideband unless you carry a laptop in the car.

After having a good look at the piston last night your're right Nick, they are doomed to fail at the slots. And I know I could build a 1915 and have it reliable but i'm committed to seeing the 1600 through at the moment. I get a kick out of a 1600 beating larger engines, and yes a turbo may be cheating, but it's a performance adder just like NOS (topical). Might be on the trail of some cheap SR20 pistons too. Thanks for your input Nick.

Stay with the 1640........just get your tune sorted.
Remember increasing your boost is the same as increasing the CR ratio...so just make sure your fuel is up to it. No point trying to tune the carb etc if you are already beyond what the fuel can handle 👍

off set grind the crank to de-stroke it and use holden rods.
64mm stroke X 90.5mm pistons =1646cc
64mm stroke X 92mm pistons =1701cc
more rpm due to the rod to stroke ratio.
might work out cheaper?

For anyone interested and who hasn't seen it already have a look at this thread. Johannes has done a lot of development on "mouse motors" and is getting 188.7hp @ 7670rpm from a NA 1603cc using a lot of stock parts. Read the thread for the thoughts behind what he does. It's a (long) great read. And he certainly doesn't mind sharing his info.
Thanks again for the tips Nick. As Simon says (sorry) you certainly think outside the square. Also found some new 87mm forged SR20 pistons with rings for $600. I just need to get hold of a piston to compare it to a volksy piston to look at deck height and CR. You'll notice Johannes uses 86mm JE pstons.
Impressive stuff. All he has done is apply F1 style lightening techniques to all the internal components, specifically the pistons, then open the heads right up. I've emailed him about this motor too. He reckons a counterweighted crank (this one is factory unweighted) would make it a great rally/circuit motor. So it's possible.
Kinda funny really, a certain engine builder has been an advocate for short stroke (big bore) motors for decades and everybody seem to disagree with his theory.......how the tide turns 👍😂😂

I guess it all comes down to volumetric efficiency.

Craig Torrens wrote:Kinda funny really, a certain engine builder has been an advocate for short stroke (big bore) motors for decades and everybody seem to disagree with his theory.......how the tide turns 👍😂😂
Personally I prefer a long stroke in a small bore, nothing worse than excessive side clearance from a bore that's been honed a few too many times. Although if you only have a short stroke I suppose you have to make do with what you've got.

pete wood wrote:which holden rods?
I have done this conversion myself with great success back in the mid 1980's . I used holden red motor 6cyl conrods , but starfire 4 or blue motor 6cyl rods are much stronger .
I also stroked a standard 1600 crank to 75mm using the same rods and 94mm pistons and it had great torque and revved really quick due to the light conrod weight .
BTW I was watching Frankenstein run at Warwick and was very impressed with your progress...well done

hypo-vw wrote:BTW I was watching Frankenstein run at Warwick and was very impressed with your progress...well done
Thanks Wayne...appreciate the encouragement. I'd like to think by Warwick next year i'll have the choice of turbo or Super charger.
Also the idea of a big bore and short stroke would help my 60 foot times. Until boost comes on it's still a mild 1641.
Good stuff Pete....sounds awsome
SuperOwen ·
I can't see how a shorter stroke would have any advantage for 60ft's. If anything I'd imagine a longer stroke would have an advantage with torque, its a longer lever at the end of the day. I really cant see the point in sticking with the 1640 if decent pistons are going to run the same amount as going up to 94's. Just imagine all that extra capacity to spool up a bigger turbo!! Just tell us all its a 1640 and keep a sheet over the engine in the pits😀😀

Interesting thread. IS E85 easily available down under?
Here is a 1641ccm street engine for you;
- Original crank, not counterweighted
- CB h rods 5,5"
- Mahle 87mm pistons and cylinders
- Single relief engine case
- Fk-89 camshaft
- lube a lobe lifters
- cromolly pushrods
- scat 1,4:1 rockers
- Orginal heads with orginal valves 35/32,5mm. Ported intakes and exhaust.
It dynoed 354hp at 2 bar but blew a head at the SCC event (10.18 ET). He exchanged the head to a original, un-ported one which he use in the movie above and took the car to the JPM dyno day last weekend. With one ported head and one un-ported head he dyno`d 391hp at 2.2 bar. Not bad at all from a 1641ccm budget engine.

Wow thats one quick bug, here's another
I applaud you Stanley with sticking to the 1640 for as long as you have, I don't think people realize that its a lot more difficult building a fast reliable mouse motor than a big bore 2L+ beast.
Johannes from JPMotorsport has proved that it can be done but unfortunately at a high cost with a lot of rotating mass cutting, custom machining, custom pistons, light valve train, hand ported heads, creative friction coating and all combined with stock parts.
Speaking to him a few months ago regarding a similar engine to yours, he recommended I use the 88mm thick wall "machine in" pistons to keep the cost down with either stock or counter weighed balanced crank and still keeping under the 1700, kinda old school 1678 with boost, I have since been thinking about building a real mini mouse turbo 1300 twin port.
He is also a big fan of the 1915 combo because its efficiency of build and performance....but then it becomes more of a rat.

fish26 wrote:I applaud you Stanley with sticking to the 1640.
I would have to agree with you . Stick with the 1640 project.... it is a lot more satisfying getting big horsepower from smaller engines .
In 1993 I attended the VW nationals drags with my rotary powered beetle , my then apprentice Trent was driving a dark blue street beetle (which later became the WPVW sports sedan ) with a 1640 engine I had prepared . The engine was dynoed at 101bhp @ the wheels 7800rpm NA on 48IDF webbers .
The 1640 was nearly as quick as the rotary , quicker than a Hellbug built 2.2 injected bug and quicker than a 1600 turbo bug also running at that event .
Stick with it Stanley...more horsepower and reliability to come mate .

no nitro on that beast, just clever engineering, light parts and great heads, Johannes sure knows how to build engines.
SuperOwen ·
There's a lot of money tied up just in pistons in some of those motors. Clever engineering, but for the time, effort and cost involved definatly not sensible for the average enthusiast.
On a slightly different note why is it that the bigger the motor the wilder the camshaft people seem to think you can use? If everything is sized proportionally to the displacement (valves, ports etc) wouldnt the powerband characteristics of say an fk87 be the same on a 1600 as a 2332? rocker ratio may have to come down to reduce lift on the smaller valve I suppose and a 1600 off cam would be soggy compared to a 2.3 off cam. Any other thoughts?
Maybe stanley needs to try an fk87, proven performer on the old pro turbo cars!

Craig, I have engine building specs for nearly every engine I have assembled in the past 15 years . I have dug through my specs sheets and found the one for my speedway engine ....
My 1640cc engine had 1mm deckheight , 27cc chambers and 1.75cc piston notches . I have rechecked my calculations and this combo gave me a cr of 12.82 .
I have in the past experimented with comp ratios and set an 1835 engine at 17:1 on avgas with a 20cc chamber , but it ran like a diesel . Heaps of torque , very harsh and pinged .....
pete wood ·
SuperOwen wrote:There's a lot of money tied up just in pistons in some of those motors. Clever engineering, but for the time, effort and cost involved definatly not sensible for the average enthusiast.
The price of parts generally all comes down to demand. If more 'average' enthusiasts started you use his pistons, he could order bigger batches and the price would come down markedly. That's why the US stuff is so much cheaper, coz they make it huge batches. Same as iphones and TVs. People probably had the same attitude to forged stroker cranks in the 70s, "like who such serious engineering", but now they are made in enormous batches and are reasonably affordable to everyone in the scene.
fish26 ·
most of JPM engines use custom pistons and barrels as they are per engine basis hence their expense.............a group buy from JE would be cool though and we'd all have similar base engines, apples with apples.
SuperOwen ·
Thats what I meant fish, its all custom which makes it expensive. Most if not all of the piston brands will take a custom order, but can you imagine trying to get everyone to agree on what specs they want for a group buy? At the end of the day you've still got a 1600 that cost twice as much to build as the 2276 with off the shelf parts and still spanked you!!
I like stanleys combo because it doesn't use anything exotic, making the most of commonly available stuff.

It is Shell V-Power pump gas. 99 octane. Easily available in Europe.
He changed the header design this weekend and managed 252hp at 9000 rpm and with a wopping 8hp increase at 7000 rpms. These are incredible improvements when you are at this level. He is also going to bump the compression a little and according to his calculations the finished engine will produce a healthy 265hp / 138.4 hp/lit.
Mahles 87`s are not forged and have never been forged either. Still, if they can handle 2.6-2.8 bar of boost I would not worry about their quality.

Confirms my suspicions so I guess it comes down to the tune up with me. Still considering Nissan pistons though. I think they would be more forgiving. Just need to get a hold of one to check it out.
The first ones are definately Mahle and the second ones are the AA pistons. Which I have also used in 85.5 with the turbo and actually my notch is currently fitted with a set of AA 87mm pistons with no problems that i'm aware of.
I have used Mahle pistons but don't know about the graphite coating.
If you go by a price comparison you can tell there not forged. A complete set of 87mm B&P for $300 compared to 87mm forged ACL SR20 pistons (no barrels for obvious reasons) $660. The forging process warrants a higher price.
I can also remember that cast pistons have a strengthening band built into the inside of them which you can see on some pistons.

The Mahles do handle those amounts of boost in the 1641/354hp turbo engine I mentioned earlier in this thread;
- Original crank, not counterweighted
- CB h rods 5,5"
- Mahle 87mm pistons and cylinders
- Single relief engine case
- Fk-89 camshaft
- lube a lobe lifters
- cromolly pushrods
- scat 1,4:1 rockers
- Orginal heads with orginal valves 35/32,5mm. Ported intakes and exhaust.
But if you mess up your tuning they will crack, but so would Autocrafts, JayCee`s, Pauter etc etc. The same engine dyno`d 394hp at the JPM dyno day. It is not a JPM built engine.
Keep us updated with your project. It is always interesting to read about small, capable engines. Buy yourself a good ECU, add a bigger turbo and go racing!

Just a quick update for those interested.
I've just fittted new spring plate bushes and lowered the rear end a tad but more importantly I've Just purchased some 87mm Mahle SR20 forged Nissan pistons.
Should have them next week. Then it's off to DB's to shorten the barrels, pushrods and other bits to make them fit.
Let the games begin

Are the nissan pistons just a plain flat top?
dangerous ·
I think they are slightly dished, so we will flycut the head too, to restore the comprerssion.

Amazing the symmetry of things sometimes... the Nissan dudes I know through racing say that running VW pistons in an SR20 is a pretty common trick... apparently they're a bit lighter and also slightly increases the compression !!!
😂
Stanley ·
the nissan pistons have the same gudgeon size as a volksy but they are 7mm shorter.
this means everything will be shortened 7mm. Barrels. intake, exhaust mods, pushrods and tinware.
and yes they are much lighter and are also coated with anti friction compound.
SuperOwen ·
Sounds perfect for a stout little motrr, any other changes while your at it? same cam etc?

Whats the latest Andrew?
Engine getting closer?
Stanley ·
Actually it is Aaron.....I moved it from the floor back to the bench so it's physically closer to the car now...😂
On a serious note things are moving. Went to see DB last weekend and picked up the barrels and push rods which he shortened about 7mm.
As the Nissan pistons have an 11cc dish Dave also flycut the heads to compensate. Excellent work on all accounts.
Now everything else needs to be narrowed 7mm per side. Intake, exhaust, tinware and mod to the fan housing. Rather than shorten the intake and exhaust i'm considering making a new intake and getting a header system made. Never been entirely happy with the way mine looks. It doesn't need to fit under the deck lid of a streeter anymore so looking at something like A J Sims.
Also fitting a half cage.
Stanley ·
new pistons
As the pistons are 8mm shorter than a std volksy piston DB shortened the barrels 8mm along with the pushrods.
DB also flycut the heads to allow for the 11cc dish in the piston.
The intake, exhaust and tinware also had to be modified to allow for the shorter barrels
humpty ·
Slipper skirts Forgies..... Mmmmmm.... More boost in your future Andrew?.... Have you decided on your exhaust system yet?
Dak-A-Tak ·
Hey Stanley , whats the latest news , have started rollcage yet . How about bringing your car along to dyno mania day (put on display ) ?
Stanley ·
Cage will be finished this weekend.
Had to make a new seat mount to get side intrusion to fit. Something i've wanted to do for a while.
Engine is together after a small unforseen problem with the Nissan pistons. While installing the last B&P noticed it wouldn't fit in the case. Other 3 were ok.
After thinking the rod was bent investigation revealed that the gap in the piston for the small end, being smaller than a std volksy piston (thought 2mm clearance was ok), was enough to cause this. Long story short all rods out and down to DBs to be narrowed a bit. All good now.
Next job is to make a new turbo exhaust. Then some Jenny Craig treatment to make up for the extra weight.
I'll be coming along to dyno day but i'll leave Frankenstein at home. It's not that much to look at

Well considering Warwick isn't far away and is the talk of the town thought i'd show those interested what's been happening to Frankenstein.
The engine is together wirh the nissan pistons and i'm just waiting for some exhaust bits to start welding that together.
In the meantime i've fitted a n expertly bent cage from Westi and his boys which i've since welded in and as i've never been really comfortable with the poly seat i've fitted a Kirkey seat.
There was also some die grinder and hole saw action to counter the extra weight of the cage. More on that to come.

As much as i'd like to I'll wait for Warwick. I'd hate to break it before Warwick plus I have data from last year so will know where I am for the 1/4. Mind you it's put on a bit of weight.
I like symmetry so centred is good good and is easy. What you do for one side you do for the other. Just add 40mm for the offset and the bonus is you can see TDC.
I've been slack and haven't run it since last Warwick. I think it's proved for a 1641 it's quick but i'm over replacing pistons after a race meet.
Aim is to make it reliable and get it down the 1/4 without imploding.

Stanley ·
Well after some dramas which was thought to be an MSD problem but turned out to be a dud timing light Frankenstein fired up first go.
Just need to tidy up a few little things like accelerator cable and reset one spring plate and all is go for Warwick.
Changes since last year
Fitted a half cage....thanks again Westi
New MSD....old one shit itself just before Warwick last year so ran with the trusty 009
new Kirkey seat
new 1 1/2 exhaust system. old one was a bit large for a 1641 plus needed to be narrowed to fit engine.
fitted forged Nissan 87mm SR20 pistons. This required shortening the barrels and push rods, narrowing small end of con rods, flycutting heads to account for piston dish (thanks to DB for mall the machining), trimming the tinware by 8mm a side and notching out the fan housing to clear the intake castings. Why the hell would you do that I here everyone asking....maybe i'll leave that for after Warwick.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Lookin forward to see some results mate!! Kudos for sticking with the project too!! Many others would have given up by now!!
vassy66T1 ·
Good to hear.
Warwick will rush up on us all for sure.

It's all come to gether very nice. looks like lots of hours have been spent since its last outing, hard to do with the cold wether where you are.
Did you look in to the logging since we spoke?
hypo-vw ·
that looks awesome Stanley !! cant wait to see the changes at Warwick , in both appearance & times . Well done mate......🤪
20bkombi ·
What's crackin stanley?
Stanley ·
All done other than a few little niggly jobs like sourcing Holley fuel fittings which will be here next week. A bit of a buggar really cos now the cars done my lovely wife has me doing a reno on our ensuit. This was after painting the house a little while ago. I peaked too early
Also been investigating the data logging thing. My wideband doesn't store data so would need to make some runs with a lap top strapped in the car not to mention having to buy a map sensor etc. might be easier to strap a video camera in to watch the guages for me....🙂
20bkombi ·

Wow dude,
Awesome results at Warwick.
Well done seeing the project through to sick times!!
essex ·
well done Stanley, top job, you must be very pleased to see this along, picture to follow, i have good video of your last run, good to meet up with you, cheers Barry
Stanley ·
Thanks all.
Stoked is an under statement. I was kinda hoping to match last years 7.7 considering the extra weight of the cage and then just be able to take it home in one piece. Only tuning changes from last year were taking some timing out (24deg rather than 28) which I think this was the biggest positive. No lean issues and plugs looked nice. Jetting was the same as last year with 65 jets.
The only cock up was my dial ins (you owe me one Frosty). I well and truly under estimated these. Last race I dialled in at a 7.70 and ran the 7.58 at 89mph. Lost the race but had a grin ear to ear. Fastest mph was 90. 60fts are still a bit slow at 1.7 but that’s a result of the smaller displacement I think. It still thinks it’s a 1641 until boost comes on. Thought I’d wound the boost down but it was still running 11lbs.
Good to catch up with all the regulars and meet some new faces. No excuses now Barry time to get a move on. You only have until February.
Special thanks to Dave Butler for all the machining and advice and the MSD chip.....🙂
And after all this I drove it off the trailer for once. Willowbank here we come.

Another pound of boost or a couple more kilo's out and you are all over the quick eight.
Not bad for the old girl and the cars lookin good to Stan.hahahah.
That is unreal Stan .
Sorry we didn't get a good chance to catch up maybe next time.
What's next mate.

Well done mate - always a big bonus when there is nothing to fix at the end of the weekend! For a such a small capacity motor, you are certainly running some pretty good numbers!
oldskl60 ·
This is one of the coolest packages! Especially knowing the perservance behind it - great work Stanley and crew! Very cool with the new front end.
Looking forward to seeing it on the quarter.
Stanley ·
Sorry guys nothing new to see here just updating cos i've been slack.
Also thanks for the comments and encouragement. At the moment just waiting for some new rocker covers to turn up and then i'll try and open up the breather lines. Then rather than covering the track in oil i'll book some dyno time and get a few things sorted once and for all.

Two of the most impressive perfoming, low budget VWs in Australia at the moment.
Stanleys 1641 turbo, 7.70's on the 1/8 mile,
and frosty's 1776 with stock valves and 40mm carbs runs 13.7's.
Both on pump fuel.
Goes to show what good planning and persistance can acheive!

Stanley ·
Thanks for the vid Barry....👍
Frosty's a tough racer. He went on to win the bracket.
No secrets. With DB's assistance I'm trying to get a 1916 NA motor ready for Jamboree this year.
DB has worked some magic on the case, crank and heads. I'm just gathering a few more parts in the interim.
This is a side project to the turbo and is keeping with staying under 2ltr.
He's a bad influence Daimo. Or good depending on how you look at it.

1915cc is all I build, not 1916.
Wont be a mega screamer, 7000 will likely be the limit.

haha, yeah nothing exciting with the heads Marcus,
they are just some old VW heads I traded in on a job.
very small port with 42 inlet, 36 exhaust.
I would have to look up the flow figures, but apparently had about 110 at the wheels on a larger engine.
vassy66T1 ·
Thanks for sharing, Dave/Andrew
Sounds like good power across the range with that setup.

I'd love to but depends on time and money.
Be a few weeks before start up. Gotta get my sons slant six running this weekend ready for Mopar Sunday and still need a fan housing.
Stanley ·
Good news is the engine is in and running well.
Bad news is I have an oil leak from around the area of the top LH stud on the oil pump which looks to be coming out between the pump flange and case. Doesn't start until oil (or case) warms up.
Pulled the pump and resealed with Loctite 518 and fitted a new cover gasket thinking oil was travelling down the stud. Still leaks.
I'm going to pull it again and have a good look to make sure there is no crack around the stud in the case. If it's ok i'll fit the pump from the turbo motor to eliminate the pump.
Question....bought a pump puller but with the plug in the gallery the rod wont engage in the hole. Anyone have any tricks for pulling the pump other than scrapers and screwdrivers. Don't want to damage any sealing faces.
thanks
humpty ·
That's a bummer..... I made my own oil pump puller twenty years ago.... Fits perfectly.... Maybe you can mod the one you have to fit better?
Stanley ·
It's an empi and broke first go so will need modding anyway
Stanley ·
Well it appears leak has been fixed. What first appeared to be a crack running from pressure port in case ended up being a score from the plug in the pump outlet created when pump was installed. Some careful blending seems to have sorted it. I still have one finger crossed though.
Just need to refit a decklid and hopefully a tnt in the coming weeks.

Whats happening with the turbo Mick?
1916baja ·
After warwick Barry, Waiting on some parts from rodney to get this NA movin first... Problem is the turbo header we have is for a stroker motor so we will need to modify it to fit my 1916, got more gauges and sensors and the likes..... Bit of mucking around, more money that i dont have to spend on the drag car at the moment...
Stanley ·
Just back from TnT where I got 5 runs on a pretty quiet night
1st...21.14 @ 69.5...lazy run making sure AF was good
2nd...14.94 @ 88.2
3rd...13.76 @ 93.3
4th...14 something after missing shift and losing time slip
5th...13.83 @ 91.5
Car ran well but need to launch harder. Still driving it like the Turbo of the line.
essex ·
Good stuff Stanley, easily into the 13s.
Did you get a burnout happening?

2nd was a shocker when I neglected to use 2nd and 3rd although picked up 2 tenths on the 60 ft and did my first wheelie.
3rd run 13.6 @ 96mph which is my fastest speed even with the Turbo motor. This came after drilling the mains to 145 from 140. Still could use a bit more. Thanks to Marcus and Pagey for the drills.

Well rather than watch the same tragic scenes over and over on CNN, as its the only English channel we can get, I thought I'd add an update as it's the only thing I can do at the moment and everybody else is hard at it.
The first thing you will notice is the addition of an awning to the back of the car to keep the rain off and also doubles as a shelf.
I'm going to run the Turbo motor in Sydney but last time I ran it it sucked the rocker cover gaskets in. Hopefully this has since been rectified by the addition of bolt on covers. Other changes prior to Sydney will be more weight reduction and some mods to the fuel system and plumbing. Aiming for a TnT mid to late Jan. Hopefully I can finally get a full pass in and see what the little 1641 can do. If it all turns to shit I'll run the 1916 motor.
Stanley ·
Pic I found from Jambo.
1916baja ·
Did you glue your gaskets in? I know I told you before but that wing looks shit hot!
humpty ·
I use to have that gasket issue with my high revin' 1776 way back in the day.... Tried bolt on covers, but they always leaked..... So fitted the OEM covers back on.... And always run Permatex #3 Gasket Sealant now.... Problem solved.
nbturbo ·
What sort of crankcase breathing are you Blokes using?
Stanley ·
I'm running a line off each rocker cover and one off the blanking plate where the stock fuel pump was. I have a catch can with a capacity of about a litre with a large mesh breather off that. I probably need to increase the his size though.
nbturbo ·
Do you ever have anything in the catch can?
Stanley ·
Since I've gone to the bigger catch can and even sucking in the gaskets haven't seen any oil in catch can. Sucking gaskets happens with NA engines too which is why some chose to glue and weld tabs to prevent.
Only reason previous breather filled up was due to holes in pistons. I hope I'm passed that now with the Nissan pistons I'm running.
Stanley ·
After my accelarator jammed on at Warwick I thought it was time to do a pedal upgrade as the old ones were showing their age with plenty of slop in the shaft and bushes.
I got a late model set of pedals (thanks again Dave R) thinking they would pretty much go straight in. However after a trial fit I discovered that apart from different mounts the hook for the clutch on the late set is offset 66mm. (sorry for blurry photos used my phone). Also had to modify the pedal stop as well.
Only one thing to do....
While I was at it the cable hook was looking a bit worn.
so fixed this as well
so after it was all fixed I now have a good set of pedals that are also lighter than the old cast ones.
1916baja ·
And they look like race pedals with the speed holes! 👍

Why stop there dave. Up the boost baby.
Stan's got a back up engine.

So you got out last night to TnT ... well done
The magic 100??
Stanley ·
Yep finally got the 100mph....just. Best time for the night was last run 12.99 @ 100.08mph (with next to no brakes). My fastest time but not best ET. 12.63 is PB with turbo engine. Had 3 other fairly consistant runs at 98ish mph.
Prior to going out I changed out the Mitsubishi dissy for a 009 because it was hard to start while trying to maintain 24deg full advance. The 009 cleared this up and I went for a conservative 22deg full advance. I had also backed the boost off a couple of PSI hence the lower ET. Had an issue with a huge flat spot with the carb under load but seemed to clear with some revs. I'll fix this before Sydney.
Had 5 full passes (including the one where I missed 2nd) one with a good wheelie and no issues with rocker gaskets or oil in the catch tank. In Sydney I'll turn the boost up a couple of PSI snd see he we go.
Thanks to DB and Pagey, Dave R and Mick for the encouragement.
humpty ·
Wow Andrew.... I love the et's your getting with that lil' beastie..... That's great to see.... Really looking forward to seeing you run in Sydney next month....

Stanley ·
Thanks all...Dave R had some vid of the wheelie run and some incar i think.
You've heard Barry....I just hope they have a 240 volt outlet at Warwick....😂
Thanks for the link westi....bit shiny though....mmmm nitrous.
Doug Sweetman ·
1.7 60ft times look pretty nice too.... Any car running 12 s is fast in my books !
Turbo54 ·
Well done Stanley, great times out of such a little motor.

Stanley ·
Put a kit through the Holley during the week to try and get rid of the flst spot off idle. Also adjusted the acc
elerator pump and seems to be better (sorry neighbours didn't go over 50).
Spent today modifying trailer to strenthen draw bar for Sydney drive and added a winch.
Stanley ·
Well with Sydney less than a month away the time has come to part ways with the turbo....so after Sydney, which will be the last run for the turbo engine, the complete turbo system will be up for grabs.
Setup includes draw through T02 turbo, 600 Holley with custom manifold, intake, exhaust, boost gauge and spare wastegate actuator and some other bits and pieces. NOTE....my engine is 8mm per side narrower than a stock motor so some tweaking of exhaust and intake would be required. Have a look back at this thread and you'll see what you get. If anybody from Sydney in interested I'd be happy to unbolt it and leave it behind. Does not include engine....🙄
Thinking $500 for everything. Send me a pm if you're interested.
And for those interested the plans are to put the motor in my streeter with the IDFs and eventually fit some mechanical injection on the 2276 currently under construction. NA all the way 😉

Wo wo wo! What's going on here????!!!!

All good Mick...I had such a blast at Jambo i've decided to focus on NA and run more meets.

I have some killer hilborn stuff laying around if your interested. Pm me if your keen

Wanna trade him for his turbo gear Ben! 😂
whathaveidone ·
Pffffft!!! No need for turbos

Turbos are so gen y....Hilborn is old school.

Yeah yeah... Really good price on the turbo gear though! Shouldn't last long.

Maybe I need to paint the POS black and get a wing to keep the flag flying?

A cuddle might be nice.... Ha ha! I don't give a shit just stirring! N/a seems so much easier at this stage but I can't afford to make 200+ hp na... Boosted really shouldn't be a problem though.
I'll remember the cuddle offer in Sydney mate! I'll bring some matching purple dressing gowns so we look the part too! 😂

Mick, were all looking forward to you getting your turbo motor in & running!

At least we'll be warm! 😁
I'm looking forward to having an engine again too Barry!
Stanley ·
Well Turbo has gone to a new home so it's all about NA now. Currently in the process of assembling a 2276 motor for Jambo and Warwick.
Have also had tranny upgraded (thanks DB) to include a spool, new diff ratio and a couple of gear ratios. Have also purchased some Holborm mechanical injection and will fit this and make some upgrades for methenol after Warwick.
essex ·
Nice one.

Very cool Andrew!!
Any more info on the engine? Heads, cam, etc.
Stanley ·
vassy66T1 wrote:Very cool Andrew!!

Yes it will have both
vassy66T1 ·
That should help performance heaps then 😏
Stanley ·
Heads have 42 x 36 valves and are similar to CB performance mini wedge ports.
The cam I believe is a Pauter grind with 268 degrees measured at .050” with a 108 degree lobe centre and I think it has .520 lift with 1.25 rockers.
DB might be able to supply more info or correct me if i'm wrong.
humpty ·
You must have had fun cleaning up that transaxle casing.... Next stop is a full polish? 😵💫
dangerous ·
Stanley ran 13.6 @100.47 missed a gear. Shift at 5000.... That should bed the rings in!
Thanks DB and Daimo...ended up with 12.38 @ 106.3. Lower Tyre pressures and leaving a bit harder should bring times down a tad. 60ft 1.66.

Stanley has Jamboree next weekend too.
Can't wait till you drop some tyre pressure and launch with some wheels up, good luck next week.
Stanley ·
Thanks all.....it's certainly a load off after how it went last night. I was focused on the car and not so much on my part. Hopefully next weekend I can concentrate on my job.
Stanley ·
Some in car vid thanks to Frosty's gopro. 1st one I had the shift light set to 6500rpm but unfortunately only had a 6200rpm chip in the MSD hence no shift light.
The second run was the PB of 12.3 @ 106mph
essex ·
Good stuff, Any changes for this week?
Stanley ·
I don't think so...afr is good in the vids...maybe lower Tyre pressures depending on the track. Pretty happy with how things went. Changed the oil today and found no surprises.

warm those new tyres?

2276cc.
Same everything else as the 1915, except a tad more comp.

Sorry mate not at this stage...it's not just a crank. If you've seen the pics you'll realise it's a piece of art...so it's on the mantle piece
fish26 ·
I can understand you keeping it, looks like a sculpture but I thought I'd ask anyway, I got a super light flywheel screaming for a light crank. Please post an arty photo of it so we can use as screen saver.

Only 7 more sleeps until Warwick...I'd better get my act together this weekend.
hellbugged ·
Did I miss your Jambo report?
dangerous ·
Broke 4th gear!
Stanley ·
Yep...on my last qualifier I thought I'd missed 3rd to 4th but turned out I was knocking all the teeth off 4th gear. I should have listened to my gearbox builder who told me I was at the limits of my "budget" box. Needless to say I've now taken his advice and upgraded to match the HP of my engine with room to move for the methenol and injection after Warwick.
I brought the car home Sunday, removed the engine and tranny, took it back to the track and DB had it ready to go Tuesday....thanks man....top service.
essex ·
Good work DB & Stanley,

Ooh now we talking!!
Stanley ·
Just waiting for a few bits to turn up from Hilborn but this is basically it.
Have match ported the heads to the manifolds and while the heads were off removed some barrel spacers to end up with a CR just under 13:1.
Also modifying the fuel system to take methanol.
matberry ·
That should wake her up a bit Andrew. Bewdy
humpty ·
Yeah..... That's pretty cool.
Nice work Andrew.
Stanley ·
Early Christmas present turned up today...new pair if Hilborn manifolds.
After a trial fit there will be a little bit of work involved in getting them to fit the ported heads before I can plumb it up.

Man this is like watching Arnold Swartzenegger build his big body! how big can you go! I keep telling you Proffessor Porsche said 36HP is all you need. Stan all I can do is pray for you

Performance Upholstery ·
What was wrong with the other manifolds?
Stanley ·
Went down to DB's today to get the complete injection system flow tested. Now have a starting point for pill sizes, had the high speed valve set and basically tested the operation of the entire system. Everything will now be installed back on the engine and in the car. Hoping for a run 1st week of Feb. Thanks again DB

Engine finally back in and fitting nicely after a small amount of trimming of the body to accommodate number 2 ram tube. Just some plumbing and fitment of a cable for the shutoff valve and some other little niggly things.

Trailer cable, fixed.
1 cable for the front of the car, 1 for the back, and 1 more for the engine. Jobs done. You still need fused battery feed for relays at each end, but that's it really.
Mr Stanley, if your alternator is of the internal regulator "one wire" type (only has one single post on top, without another spot for a single blade connector), then use battery cable (welding cable is good) to connect from that one connection bolt to your starter motor "large post", which should be connected to your battery, then you're good to go and your alternator will then charge your battery fine.

Also you could add a self resetting circuit breaker (like the modern cars have) to protect from over current.
Some of the battery isolate switches have another terminal or pair of terminals so it disconnects the alternator before (i think it's before) the battery disconnects.
Stanley ·
Thanks guys....good info and much appreciated. Alt is from Suzuki swift and does have internal reg.

Managed to get engine fired up yesterday and ran pretty nice. Just minor things to do like throttle return springs and hook up cable for fuel shutoff which has been moved since video. Special thanks to DB for guidance and help and Henry for the bits. And yes breather will be changed for something more substantial.
Here is a short video.

Results of TnT...only managed two runs on the night due to other peoples issues.
First run was easy take off through 1st and 2nd and nailed in 3rd to shift light at 6800rpm to make sure for one that belts stayed on but mostly to check AF which was reading way rich. Next run was normal launch and run, although not the cleanest, to set a baseline for tuning. Next outing will change the pill and hopefully crack the 11's. Mine is car 3.
andrewmurphy ·
Nice mph

Nice one Stanley, shame its not going to be at Sydney,

Thanks Andrew and Barry...I wanted to go to Sydney but needs a bit more tuning and a couple of small tidying up things.
Drained the oil yesterday and apart from the tell tale signs of methanol use all was good. Fuel system now cleaned waiting for next TnT.
Stanley ·
Couple of minor changes since last outing mainly the new breather. Was set for a TnT Wednesday but wasn't happy with my brakes. So will fit a new staging brake that works and fittings that don't leak. Hoping for the 9th.

Cool breather and very clean set up Andrew.
I love how basic it is.

I've had the gearbox out to have some new gears fitted by DB so decided to do an 1 1/4" trans raise. I also wanted to brace the frame horns which meant adding a passenger side intrusion to stiffen up the cage for support. Also cut a lot of tin from the rear for clarance as well as some of the parcel shelf where the box poked through. Pretty happy with the stance now, although this was only one of the reasons. Finally got it back on the wheeks today.

Jamboree wrap up
Had 4 runs before being knocked out by DB with his .001 light. 1st run missed 3rd gear so no real data to go by. Last 3 ETs and speed are pretty consistent. Had a camera hooked up to monitor my A/F meter and noticed it was rich during the run so a change in main pill will be on the cards for next outing. Hopefully this will give me consistent 11 sec runs. Also started concentrating more on staging and launch and managed a .019 and .045 light. Engine is still sweet and right for Warwick.
Wow...can't believe it's been almost 3 years since posts.
Anyhow just recently competed in the Benaraby Bug-In. Awesome event and a credit to those involved in making it happen. Car ran great all weekend and since last post has gotten faster. It ran 11.68 @ 113mph which is slightly quicker than previous and where i've wanted it to be. Engine runs hard and is pretty consistent just some minor tweaks with the rear suspension and consistency should improve further. Special thanks to Dave Butler for his machining magic and assistance along the way. Here is a vid from the weekend.
