What do you think ,full resto or custom?
Maybe the rat look.
I`ll try to keep putting updates on here as often as I can.
Best thing is it makes me do work on the thing.馃槈

BUGBOY 路
Have decided to turn it into a daily car.
so a bit of work ahead.馃槑
BUGBOY 路
Well as you can see the things underway.
Put a bit of primer on the bare metal and get ready for a touch up.
Hows she look so far?
Found some flared guards with holden lights in them which I might fit as they should look cool.馃槑
KruizinKombi 路
Nice one Nathan! Is this the same bug I saw when I was last at your place? If so, it's come a long way! :thumb Those Holden lights wouldn't happen to be from a Torana would they? :o
BUGBOY 路
Put in a late model box to help give her longer leg!
Col , gave up on the guards the torana lights are to hard to find.
silver 路
No! please don't Toranafy that nice little Oval. it cant look any better than with a standard body. those torana things will look good at the dump
BUGBOY 路
This looks a lot better.
Would never concider it Col anyway!馃槈

BUGBOY 路
Well what a ball this was!
Harder to do than late models but well ones in and now just have to do the other side.馃檨
Took the best part of half a day.
BUGBOY 路
Well here`s from the outside , still have to attach the hinge to the body.
Had a lot of help from my mate Theo on this one.
BUGBOY 路
just thought I`d put a picture of him hard at work.Thank god for the seat covers.:o

Looking sweet mate.. coming along well.. Be done by Hanging Rock?
BUGBOY 路
It could be done in time.
But still driving my 76 around and will take that with a price tag on it.
Still have to lower the oval yet.
Have nearly finished my front beam , only welding it all together now.Funny thing is I lost a few inches out of the middle?
Will put it together anyway.馃槈
Will post some pictures of that soon.
Grey 57 路
Glad to see you are in practise with the popouts Bug Boy. Mine are next. :thumb馃榾
Looking good, great colour & nice wheels too.
See ya at Hanging Rock

Its a cool colour. Its grown on me.
Always liked black but I think I like the fact that most of the car is still in original paint.
Just think mate we can cruise together in the grey 57`s. :thumb

Golde60 路
i take it from the comment that you have narrowed the beam?
i d love to have a chat about this. i guess i ll have to wait til hanging rock
did you do it all yourself? big job? difficult?
i have heard that you have to get the leaves drilled at an engineering shop cos its high tensile steel...
(sorry about the terminology but u know what i mean馃檪)
Golde60 路
the wheels look shit hot.
perfect for an understated factory coloured car.
thats gonna be the sleeper from hell. glad it will be driven daily
shame to waste it hey!
BUGBOY 路
Its a lot of work but its worth it.
Not a job for the back yarder.
I`m doing it all myself but I work in the metal world so its not such a job with access to all the tools.
Only taking out enough to help the 135`s clear the guards when lowered and to clear for the off set from the disc brakes.
I post all this soon with pictures:thumb
GASBNR 路
Nathan, looks very cool. has it had a chop job done, can't quite walk it out from the pics.

and I'll cruise with a green tinged Grey 57,
Bug Boy those wheels dont suit at all,
But i could take them off your hands for you ...always ready to help. 馃榾....(certainly jealous of those wheels).
Grey 57 路
I wonder if my key will start his car. Hmmm 馃槈馃槈
BUGBOY 路
The body is all stock but its often the lower windscreen that gives it the affect of being chopped.
Kim you can drill the torsion bars with a normal high speed drill bit you just run it slower and use lots of cutting oil.
Check out this site , it might give you some ideas. http://www.btinternet.com/~aircooled/wolfsburgeast/home.html
BUGBOY 路
Fitted new head light body seals and tailight to body seals tonight.
Also going to replace the windscreen and rear window rubbers as the are old and hard.
The idea of replacing the windscreen is floating around as well because it still has the original and its the old safty glass.
Has any one in melbourne had a oval laminated screen made and how much are they worth?
Will try to get some more pictures up this week end.:thumb
Grey 57 路
Had one cut at alocal glass place in Moorabbin about 5 years ago. Cost me $150. Think I got a bit stitched up.
Make sure you use the old one as a template.
If they get the curve at the bottom wrong it will never fit. No matter how much you push.
BUGBOY 路
Just been cleaning up the interior and fixing a few tears etc.
Looking for a drivers side mat and the front carpet up under the dash so if anyone can help out that would be great.
Just sent me a u2u.
Thanks
BUGBOY 路
Well this is what it looks like now.
But I have plans.:o
BUGBOY 路
Had a set of trim still new in the box but I think its just dropped in value?馃槈
BUGBOY 路
Now I have a nice box with nothing in it!
But I have always thought better to use them.
Grey 57 路
Lookin good BB.
You should ebay the empty NOS box. Betcha some would buy it.馃榾
BUGBOY 路
Well hit my real first problem.
The BRM`s fit great but the stub axle on the front is to long on an oavl and it sticks out past the centre of the rim.
Thus every time I put the wheel on the centre cap pops out.
Wheel goes on.
Cap pops off.
Wheel goes on.
Cap pops off.
Wheel goes on.
Cap pops off. 馃槧
The stub axle on a 60`s beetle is shorter but as I`m fitting different front spindles and rotors later (disc brakes) I`m hoping this will not be a problem.
I`m still looking for a drivers side mat if anyone spots one in there travels. :thumb
humpty 路
Bug Boy....Real nice ride...Keep it up!
As for discs....I have a 63 bug with a LP frontend. I made up a bolt on disc kit to fit TIII calipers & discs to mine and it works a treat! The one problem with it is it widens the track a little (10-20mm?). As I'm running 6" FUCH's (195x50-15) on the front, clearance is an issue. But with narrow beam (as you have) you'd be laughing.
The moral of this story is....
Go for later LP stub axles & disc's and she'll be right maaaaaaate.
Golde60 路
keep the details coming nath, its just making me jealous and keen as hell to get mine moving.
narrowed beam is definately in for me, now i just gotta figure out how!
he hehe
i also checked out the cost of the cb wide 5 kit on cip and its not too bad.
keep up the good work nath
BUGBOY 路
well both pop-outs are now in and I have found some front carpet.Still looking for a drivers side mat.
I`m now waiting on my disc brakes from the states and as they come with drop spindles I hope this will help with the problem of the centre caps and the stub axle.
Will try to get some more pictures up soon.
vw54 路
Like the Grill chrome set
BUGBOY 路
Well I wrote programs and cut this at work but now as the 56 oval is put away and I`m working on the 57 I`ll have to start again馃槈
I still have to make the stand that mounts it to the rear bumper , and paint in around the letters with black.
So I will end up with one on each car.:thumb
BUGBOY 路
Here`s the start of the front end.
Its all been cleaned and cut down the middle.
This front end I only took out enough for the adjusters and to make up for the disc brake kit.
This front end mod will narrow the front beam with out cutting the body work.
BUGBOY 路
Well as the towers will now hit the body work they have been cut down to half the size.
This will now clear the body work.
Next is to reinforce the tower and remake the shocker mount.
As this car is running smaller tyres up front it won`t have to be a super narrow beam.
But theres one in the pipe line.馃榾

Great shots and mad car good to see your busy working on your projects cant wait to see it in the flesh.
OvalGlen 路
Would you mind telling us how you are putting Locking Steering column on, Maaate.
BUGBOY 路
When I get the switch for the steering lock I`ll post you the details.
The lock I have also operates the ingnition.
Golde60 路
thanks for the pics of the beam nath.
how much did you cut out of it so far?
is this the one thats gonna have the brms?
does the offset of the brms create the need to narrow further?
BUGBOY 路
Kim, on the beam pictured I have only cut enough to make up for the wide 5 disc brakes as this will kick the wheels out 20mm each side, and the 50mm for the select a drops.
So in all the beam with wheels back on will look standard.
But the wheels will not stick out from fitting the disc brake kit.
On my other oval the 56 I am going all out on that beam and may even cut the body a bit.
But one project at a time I think. :thumb
[Edited on 19-6-2003 by BUGBOY]
BUGBOY 路
Well just scored a switch off a good German contact so its full steam ahead for the steering lock now.
Started on the rear speaker shelf and looking at making a fibre glass glove box thats a bit deeper for the head unit to fit into.
BUGBOY 路
Well as you can see its not the correct one as its from a 60`s model. The oval beetle one has screw terminals.
But the drive is correct so it will do.
BUGBOY 路
Well after trying to find some old vynil I went to spot light and brought some.
Only thing is it looks to new but that can be over come.馃榾
I cut two 10mm sheets of mdf.
One is to the correct size and the other 20mm smaller all round and glued together. This makes it fit nice and snug into the rear of the car.
Covered it in 12mm foam and then vynil.
The speakers are mounted next.
They will be fitted up from the bottom and the old grills will be mounted on the top for the 50`s look.
Still have to fit the head unit before we have some tunes.:thumb
[Edited on 27-6-2003 by BUGBOY]
Grey 57 路
Looking good BB. Real retro look with the red vynil. :thumb
Well my CB wide five disc brakes have turn up and thus I now also have drop spindles.
So I`ve been working on my narrow beam again.
Here is all the bits before welding.
BUGBOY 路
Started sticking it all together.
BUGBOY 路
Just have to weld on the back plate and the towers a finished.
This tower will now clear all the body work.:thumb
Adam_C 路
Could you turn out badges like that D badge for other models? replace the 5 with a 6 :P
how much would it cost that is just too sweet
could you do other badges? (just interested in knowing but id like one of the D badges)
cheers

Your oval looks hot.

fullnoise 路
I've got some IDAs with scat manifolds that would rock on your rat. Like this one.
BUGBOY 路
Just finished the plates for the inside of the shocker towers.
Gone with the factory look with a nice fitting around the beam at the bottom of the tower.
Used the bottom of an old beam for this.
BUGBOY 路
This is the view from the end looking down.
As you can see the tower is a lot thinner than standard.
Just have to weld it on now. 馃槑
BUGBOY 路
Starting to set up my disc brakes now.
Type 3 drums are fitted to the rear.
Cb performance discs on the front with drop spindles.
Iv`e fitted dual circuit with 19mm master.
This will help things pull up in time.:o
BUGBOY 路
Still looking for a nice carpet for the front.
Any helpers.
Please send U2U
Grey 57 路
Lookin good Bug Boy. Nice glove box clock too.
BUGBOY 路
Well heres the beam all back together and a splash of paint.
As you can see its been narrowed and has adjusters fitted.
BUGBOY 路
As you can see the ends have been thinned out to clear the body work.
BUGBOY 路
As you can see on the inside edge it looks just like they would have done in the factory.馃榾
BUGBOY 路
this is with the adjusters in the middle.
So this will give me 4" drop.:o
BUGBOY 路
just finished fitting king pins to the drop spindles.
BUGBOY 路
So in total with the 2 1/2 " spindles and 4" with the beam adjuster 6 1/2" to play with.:o
Cam 路
Very smooth man. That beam looks beautiful! Top job!
BenettonVW 路
Man this should be awesome..
Nice work, as always..

thanx for the inspiration.
this is what mine looks like now.
I bought home some MWS BRM's when I was o.s. last year.
I'm piecing together an engine.
92mm Mahle's, 72mm Treuhaft welded, Engle W125, 40 IDF's. autocraft. 1.3:1's,
heavily sculpted 040's with 37 x 32 's
hopefully it goes together o.k.

After not doing much for a while (work around the house etc to be done) I`ve started some more work on the oval.
Fitted the front end today and well the bloody thing fits!
And so it should after all the work etc.
As you can see it has disc brakes now aswell as being low.馃槑
BUGBOY 路
Well only got the brakes to bleed etc and this ride has some stopen power.
BenettonVW 路
Awesome.... Not long now man.
Dasdubber 路

BUGBOY 路
Well here`s some pictures of the beam all in with the discs on and with drums as well.
As you can see a bit of differance.
SPRINTSTAR 路
That looks f*@king hot Nath! I like the stock rims better than the BRM's.
Keep-up the good work....forget the house, hell, I design houses all day, I'd rather tinker with a dumped Oval.
sgetty 路
whats that????? in the pitcure spinstar??/:o
BUGBOY 路
Thanks Aldo I quite like the stock look my self. Might put the BRM`s on my 56 and leave the stocks on this car. What about this look?
Cam 路
I vote for the BRM's, dude. They're such a good looking wheel. If they're 5.5's you should put some lo-pro 185's on with thin white bands. But thats just what gets me going馃榾. Still, I think you'll tire of the stock rims after awhile and the BRM's will prove too much of a temptation.
Awesome car, it's coming up beautifully :thumb
BUGBOY 路
Well Ive been driving the car for 1 week to and from work with the narrow beam and I have to say it drives shit hot!
I fitted all king and link pins tie rod ends and a steering box.
It tracks just like a stock front end.
Only thing is the railway lines near home seem a lot rougher.馃槈

Well its time to get off my chair and lower the rear end.
Now I`ve done it before but a long time ago but its like riding a bike.馃榾
But I had a chart here somewhere on how to set it but is lost.
It listed how many inners and outers etc and the amount it lowered the car.
Has anyone got a chart or info on this as I only want to do it once and get it right the first time.

Started making a narrow beam for my other oval and also a beam for a friend.
The beam for a friend is for show and will run no shockers but the one I`m building will.
Heres a picture of the ends of one done in the usa.
Not much to my liking.
BUGBOY 路
I thought the ends just don`t look right.
Don`t get me wrong! its works fine and does the job but I`m more for make it look how Volkswagen would have made it look.
This beam is a 41/2" narrowed beam but as you can see the ends I have made are trying to stick with the standard look.
BUGBOY 路
Here`s some updated pictures of my oval.
This car I drive everyday.
It has a 2" narrowed beam and lowered.
