Battery/ Starting issue

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/69153/battery-starting-issue

Mick058 ·

i seem to have issues starting, as in the battery gets overloaded. I checked the battery and its reading 14.5volts on the battery terminals when the engine is running so i assume its charging properly.

But sometimes when i start the car it really strugglesd to turn over. Is this a charging fault or battery size fault???

Bizarre ·

or high resistance connection fault

Mick058 ·

what could cause that? What resistance?

Joel ·

is the condition of the starter motor known? did it just come with the car or tranny? or is it a newy?
and what CR is ur engine??
ive seen some older starter motors struggle with high CR starter motors
the one in my old beetle was slow to turn over my old 1835 which was 9.4

greedy53 ·

it may be charging at 14.5 but what happens when its not running go and get a battery chek for break down under load i would say ya battery is kaput

Mick058 ·

Sorry, what do wou mean by what CR is my engine? Compression ratio

Joel ·

yup

Do You have the earth strap on the gearbox?

are You using the ignition switch for all the current to the solenoid??

best to use a relay then You will know if its the battery or not...

Bush in the bell housing may be worn
which can make the starter motors job very difficult..

i don't have this earth strap, so i just put it in. What does it do, besides the obvious....so, what problems does it cause.

Bizarre ·

You need a good link (reference point) between the -ve of the battery (body) and the generator (motor)

There are effectively isolated from each other through mounts

Additionally the starter needs to earth as you only take a large wire to it

You NEED an earth strap

Mick058 ·

So will this help my charging battery issue?

vw54 ·

your gearbox has rubber mounts so it dosnt really make a good connection to earth thats why you have the extra earth strap on thefront of the gearbox

also check all the terminals on the battery and body work and lubricate slightly to reduce the resistance its a simple thing but will stop yr car from starting, also scraping residue of a newly painted car will allow better surface contact and therefore give you better electrical continuniaty

That is why they put it there

Make sure you have those grippy washers that dig into the metal under it as well
