Have had the float level dropped as it kept fouling the plugs as it was too rich and flooding the engine. This worked for about a week or two untill it started backfiring, blowing smoke and chugging again. Pulled the sparkplugs again, cleaned them as they were very sooty, and this solved the problem....for a week. Started doing it around yesturday morning when it was cold, but today it was doing it whenever. Pulled the plugs an hour ago, this is what they looked like.
P.S I read what sort of spark plugs they are....W8AC. Arent they supposed to be W5AC, WIll this affect anything?

the 3rd is a problem
The others look fine

The look normal after a week?
The number picture matches up to the cylinder they came out of.

idle jet too big
Joel ·
that was my first instinct
but like i siad to simon lastnight 1,2 and 4 are fine
to bigger idle jet theyd all be wet
im guessing its probably got a dodgy ring or valve guide on #3 which is fouling up the plug and causing ur misfire and smoking
i had exact same thing happening on my old 1835
was a broken lower oil ring on #1

get a set of Hotter / Colder plugs carnt remember which way they go but ring Vintage for a set will stop all that crap
i think there NKG thye work well 02-9789-1777

The higher the number the hotter the sparkplug.....if I read it right lol. What difference would a hotter sparkplug make?

yep go 1 plug hotter and change the jet it has nothing to do with float levels no 3 has always been a grump on vw's also make sure your air filter is in good nick a crook blocked filter will make the caarby suck harder and if it cant get air it will get fuel
good luck

Nah the spark plugs are alredy 3 ranges too hot..Thats why im thinking I should get some W5AC's
