Do you really have to change the tinware when fitting 1600 Type 3 motor in baja?

It is necessarily to obtain all the tinwear to change the type 3 1600 motor into a standard beetle stylin type 1?

what harm would it do? or what inconvenience would it play?

Just curious. Thanx guys.

Actually, by using type 3 tinwear, will that actually get rid of the dredded type 1 hot spot on cylinder # 3??

Trying to get an exhaust system to clear the type 3 fan housing will be your biggest problem.....then ground clearance of that exhaust is next.

thanx man.

Rekon type 1 tin wear is pretty cheap to obtain?

Just some 2nd hand bitz and bobz... just found a twin carb 1600, complete bolt in and go setup...
cept type 3. For the price its worth, its good enough price as the long block alone (which is all that would be of any use to me cause of the tin wear)

Will a different generator and fan have to be used?

bajachris88 ·

wait.. i found some sources for the heat shrouds ova the heads, and i think i got a spare fan shroud...

just hope i can use the same generator, and fingers crossed about the fan...

thanx though 11cab

plenty of ppl did it back in the day with buggies cos the low engine doesnt interfere with body and a mate got given a rusty 62 baja that had one also
all of them just had twin buggy cannons either side to clear the tinware and engine cage

My thoughts are that it would look a bit odd as well.

I wouldn't recommend it, in fact recommend against it.
1; cooling fan sucks in air that has just cooled your engine, making your engine run hotter and around and around....
2; excessive overhang makes your cage longer which all effects handling and departure angle.
3; 4-1 exhaust system a problem to buy and accentuates the above problem.
4; type three cooling fan unreliable compared to type 1

But they do fit, and you wouldn't be the first,
and the generator's are different. The type three has no provision for the fan.

Type 3 engine will fit in a baja, I've seen a few. No comment on how well they work.
To convert type 3 engine to upright you'll need:
Tinware
Generator + Stand
Pulley
Fan
Oil Cooler mounting
Block off for dipstick and new dipstick hole drilled
If it's a twin carb type 3 I'm not sure if the linkages will clear the type 1 tin and genny stand so you might also need a type 1 inlet manifold and carb

No fan belt to break (well, there is, but it's not related to cooling 😉)

Anthiron ·

running a 4 into 1 setup would not be advisable as the heat from the exhaust is sucked into the fan as mat berry explained,

i seriously doubt it would affect handling. we are only talking a few kilos here and if you had a standard 4 into 1 accomodating engine cage then the engine would fit just fine with cannon exhausts.

Thanks boys, ur all champions. This is good info for me to think over.

Will stew over these pros n cons and think about how to tackle the cons... then consider if its worthy of my dosh.

generally most buggy style cannons will fit
but the other thing to consider is type3 blocks dont have an oil pressure switch hole in the case
cos in type3s they screw into the oil cooler instead
few ways around this
u can tap the boss where the stock beetle one goes or the gallery plug under the dizzy but that requires full engine disasembly or an easier way is to use a type 3 oil cooler
there the same as a bug one except for the pressure switch boss
u just need a right angle fitting so it doesnt hit the firewall and cut a notch out of the doghouse for it to clear

some ppl with showcars do this to unclutter their engine bay

Chris,
If this is a good 1600 and you want it to last then yes it would be highly advise able to change it to an upright configeration as , as mentioned above the cooling will be serverly comprimised if it were to be left in its current form.
When the type 3 motor is mounted in a type 3 car the fan is feed fresh air from the side ducts on the car and doe's not suck any hot air due to ducts and a seal between the bottom half of the engine and the top .
With your car being a Baja the hot air that will be escaping under the motor when travelling down the road will be sucked back in again through the fan which will be grabing any air it can whether its hot or not ,
Now if you think that this will become better at speed think again it usually gets worse as the air at the rear of the car is in a vacume or stalled area and as matt said will just keep going around and around and around culminating in a bloody hot motor with an even shorter life span.
The other thing to consider that has not been mentioned above is that with the low rear fan on type 3 cooling sysytem , when backing up on soft sand it will tend to act like a scoop and turn into a great sand blaster for every other part of your motor.
So in sumary , do yourself and your new motor a favour and fit Beetle tin ware , as youve come ths far why not finish it properly

yeah especially bad if ur planning on going offroad
and in a baja who wouldnt....
the 62 baja my mate got given with the blown type3 engine just had mesh across the fan intake
when we pulled the engine apart the head and jug fins were so caked up with dust and dirt its no wonder it died
the dust from the wheels when offroading gets sucked straight into the fan intake
