Just bought a 70 beetle with a 1835cc engine which I like to get the best performance (read horsepower) and reliability out of. Any suggestions from people with experience from this type of set up would be appreciated. Also what kind of HP can I expect from this engine with all the trimmings

This could be a tough question.
Keeping the reply as simple as possible....
Provided you keep it cool and keep oil pressure up to the bearings,
it should serve you well.
The best way to achieve this is to make sure that jetting and tune are correct,
and use the best standard cooling system that VW made.(all tin ware in place).
Extra sump volume may be worth while, or at least some oil surge protection if you drive hard or like RPM.
Performance gains will depend on what you have now,
but having one veturi per cylinder is good for performance AND economy if jetted correctly.
Carbs between 40mm and 45 will drive nice if the set-up and workmanship on their fitment is of high quality.
The cylinder head can offer much more performance with port and chamber work,
and matching your cam for the compression you have/want can be beneficial if you want to go that far.

get yr seld a decent set of extractors and a electronic ignition set up that will help

Add some ratio / roller rockers , bolt on performance

I was under the impression that 1835cc engine although more thin walled than the standard 1600cc or 1776cc that it was still stronger by comparison the a 1915cc?
Any specific suggestions as how to bullet proof the eninge using high performance and strength parts?
Consider if I had just a 1835cc case which would be the best performance brands, sizes or combinations to use to get a good balance between hp and reliability?
* cam
* heads
* port work
* compression ratio
* exhaust
* carbs
* rockers
* ignition
Thanks for your help

I have deleted my other post - lest just keep it in Tech
That will give you some direction cause what you are asking is WAY to broad to "just" type an answer to

if ur planning on keeping the car and driving regularly id ditch the 92s specially in a heavier type3
ur obviously planning a full strip down
which is a good idea anyway on an unknown engine
chuck in a new bearing set and buy a mahle 1776 jug kit
the 1835 kit can be sold on easily if its in good nick
decide on a cam and like dave said abit of headwork is easy and give good results
then all u need is a good zorst system and some nice carbs to let it breathe to the full potential

I myself have a 1835cc, and a friend of mine that used to know alot about bugs told me that i cant't go over about 4500rpm.... is this true? the guy at Dandy volks in melbourne told me his 2.2lt in his combie can do 10.000rpm.
As Moulie175 said the engine is thined walled, so i would also like to know what to do to get better HP...

the best way to get it really going would be to let me drop it in my rod
if ya mate can get 10000 revs out of a 2.2 tell him he's dreaming son if ya want to keep the 1835 for a few years 5000 would be a nice safe number
good luck
